welcome to
Chichester Cinema
I can happilly report that our re-opening has been a wonderful success... Thanks to all of you! Maybe it was the wide selection of films that attracted you; maybe it was your desire to rekindle that much-missed cinema experience with like minded folk; or maybe you just needed to pop out of the house for a bit. What I can say is that we are so happy to see so many of you back at the cinema. We welcomed Chichester Mayor Richard Plowman (pictured cutting the ribbon with me) to officially re-open the cinema on October 16, and from that day forward, we have been lucky enough to have healthy attendances in a safe environment. I am happy to report that on the whole, the months of work that went into planning the re-opening were indeed worth it. This season we continue with the annual French Film Festival UK - look out for the films with the logo below - plus many new releases (look out for 2020 London Film Festival Best Film winner ‘Another Round’ along with Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci in ‘Supernova’) and some wonderful 4K restorations (including ‘Bicycle Thieves’). We also continue to bring you some spectacular Performance events, which include ‘National Theatre Live: War Horse’, ‘Aida’ from Sydney Harbour and ‘Uncle Vanya’ starring Toby Jones from the Harold Pinter Theatre. See you at the Cinema

Rebecca
Fri 13 Nov 14:15 Sat 14 Nov 20:45 How do you remake an OscarSun 15 Nov 20:45 winning Hitchcock mystery without Mon 16 Nov 13:45 sullying the memory of the classic Tue 17 Nov 17:45 original? The answer is give the job Wed 18 Nov 17:45 to Ben Wheatley, director of ‘Kill List’, Wed 18 Nov 20:45 ‘Sightseers’ and ‘High Rise’. Thu 19 Nov 20:45 Last night I dreamt I went to Sun 22 Nov 17:45 Manderley again. Wheatley is a Mon 23 Nov 20:45 risk taker, and his ‘Rebecca’ is sure Thu 26 Nov 20:45 to have a sprinkle of his signature psychedelic touches. A young newlywed arrives at her husband Maxim De Winter’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast and finds herself battling the shadow of his first wife, Rebecca, whose legacy lives on in the house long after her death. Armie Hammer and Lily James are the lovers. Kristin Scott Thomas is the deadeyed Mrs Danvers. Wheatley has stated that ‘Rebecca’ is fundamentally a love story – but it is also a love story inside a gothic ghost story. The massive estate is beautifully shot in saturated colors that are atypical for Anglo-centric stories. With his vision come to life by frequent cinematographer Laurie Rose, the story develops a swooping visual language that sets the scope of the terrain as a vast wasteland of secrets. Filming locations include Cranborne Manor in Dorset, Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, and some beautiful Cornish and French countrysides. Every dress, suit, hairstyle brings out the best in all of the on-screen talent. UK 2020 Ben Wheatley 121m

Notre Dame
Fri 13 Nov 17:45 Sat 14 Nov 14:15
‘Notre Dame’ is a crackling, offbeat comedy that follows Maud, a frazzled architect, as she attempts to fulfil her latest challenging project. Completed just before Notre Dame Cathedral’s devastating fire in April 2018, Valérie Donzelli directs and stars as Maud Crayon, a single mother and struggling architect who wins a competition to redesign the Notre Dame esplanade. However, what should be a career-defining opportunity only brings more drama when the project becomes a media scandal. Juggling her professional challenges with the complications presented by her ex-fiancé, Bacchus (Pierre Deladonchamps), Maud’s quest to find a sense of balance is easier said than done. Notre Dame succeeds as both a love letter to Paris and as a poignant cinematic reminiscence of one of its most famous landmarks. This is the first of six new and unreleased French films that we are offering you this Autumn, which together make up our 2020 French Film Festival UK season. Rocks
Fri 13 Nov 20:45 Thu 19 Nov 14:15
This brilliant coming-of-age film shows a young girl’s abrupt conversion from teenage innocence to adulthood and responsibility. Authentic and honest, Rocks received a 5-star review from Empire, The Guardian and The Telegraph. Set amongst the concrete council houses of a vibrant Hackney, a young teenage girl finds herself struggling to take care of herself and her younger brother after being abandoned by their single mother. Determined not to be taken into care, the titular ‘Rocks’ attempts to fend for herself. The film could easily have taken a turn for the miserable but instead director Sarah Gavron delivers a surprising portrait of resilience that avoids all the usual tropes of poverty porn. This is the must-see British film of 2020. ‘A wonderful, heart-breaking, life-affirming gem of a movie’ - Mark Kermode. UK 2019 Sarah Gavron 93m International Panorama: France

Des Hommes
Gerard Depardieu stars in this damning portrait of ordinary racism and its deep roots in French history. In 1960 Bernard, Rabut, Février and many others were called up to fight in the Algerian War. Two years later , they returned to France. They said nothing and got on with their lives. But forty years on, it takes only very little – a birthday party, a gift found in someone’s pocket - for the past to overwhelm those who have denied it for so long. Adapted from the eponymous novel by Laurent Mauvignier . Part of the official selection, Cannes Film Festival 2020 and selected as one of the ten Cannes 2020 films screened at the 2020 Deauville American Film Festival. Summerland Gemma Arterton gives a knockout performance as a crotchety loner who takes in a child evacuee.
Sun 15 Nov 17:45 Mon 16 Nov 20:45 Tue 17 Nov 14:15 Thu 19 Nov 17:45
Arterton is Alice, a reclusive writer living on the south coast who is regarded with suspicion by the village. One morning she finds herself burdened with a young London evacuee, Frank. Her initial hostility turns to grudging affection for the boy against the background of the war and the antipathy of the village. Filmed in Kent and Sussex, ‘Summerland’ delivers nostalgia, humour and melancholy while never straying into the sentimental. Arterton and young Lucas Bond are a triumph as the odd couple while Tom Courtney, Penelope Wilton and the coastal landscape co-star. UK 2020 Jessica Swale 99m 4

NEW 4K RESTORATION: Salvatore returns to his hometown to attend the funeral of Alfredo, the town’s projectionist. This piece of cinematic escapism explores the very reasons we escape to the cinema, and is back for one final screening. The film looks gorgeous and has a wistful soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. But it’s the wonderful chemistry between Alfredo (Philippe Noiret) and the young Salvatore that tends to leave such an impression on all who see it. Bring tissues. It is advisable to book early for this screening as our single screening on October 11 sold out extremely quickly. This will be your last opportunity for a while before this classic returns. Tickets £17.50 (Friends/Students £15.00) Puccini’s first triumph returned to Covent Garden for the first time in 30 years in a new staging by Jonathan Kent. ROH Encore
A consummate Puccini soprano, Latvian Kristine Opolais excels as the bold but impressionable heroine and is matched in star power by Jonas Kaufmann as her lover, Des Grieux, and Christopher Maltman as her cynical brother Lescaut. Eternal Beauty
Fri 20 Nov 14:15 Sat 21 Nov 17:45 Substantial, nuanced and rewarding, Tue 24 Nov 20:45 this take on mental illness is Wed 25 Nov 17:45 spearheaded by Sally Hawkins with Billie Piper, David Thewlis and Penelope Wilton in the wings. Jane (Hawkins) is a woman beset by depression and schizophrenia after having been stood up at the altar. Her life appears to turn around when she meets another patient, Mike (Thewlis), but this whirlwind affair alarms her family and brings problems of its own. A clever colour palate reflects Jane’s medicative state, and this is definitely the Sally Hawkins show in which she gives a transformative performance. Not an easy trick to pull off on screen – until you remember her turn in ‘Happy-go-Lucky’. UK 2020 Rose Glass 84m PERFORMANCE

This special concert was filmed live at the renowned Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna and features popular Viennese songs by Johann Strauss, Franz Lehár and Robert Stolz and stars internationally acclaimed soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen. Pinocchio
Sat 21 Nov 14:15 Thu 26 Nov 17:45
Director Matteo Garrone returns to the source material for this defiantly un-Disney adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s classic tale. It’s easy to forget what a bizarre story ‘Pinocchio’ is. Carved from an enchanted log, he is a sentient wooden puppet who dreams of becoming a real boy. A frequent liar, this tendency causes his nose to grow. ‘Gomorra’ director Matteo Garrone has previously shown his diversity with the charming ‘Mid-August Lunch’ and here he reimagines the classic children’s tale while still retaining the dark bits. There are two more versions on the way courtesy of Robert Zemeckis and Guillermo del Toro. However, neither will boast the presence of Roberto Benigni as the downtrodden Geppetto. With an Academy Award and two BAFTA best director awards, Mendes deserves a closer look in this talk, with a spotlight on some of his best and lesser known films, illustrated of course with lots of clips. Saint Maud
Fri 20 Nov 20:45 Wed 25 Nov 20:45
Landmark horror films don’t come around too often. Last year’s ‘Midsommar’ raised pulses but ‘Saint Maud’ is bound to eclipse it. The brilliant Morfydd Clark plays Maud, a sexless loner and misanthrope who nurses a terminally ill ex-ballerina called Amanda. Maud doesn’t just want to save lives – she wants to save souls – at any cost. As Maud’s mental state deteriorates, the film becomes more surreal and more poetic. Equal parts horror film, character and religious study, Glass ramps up the tension along an unsettling trajectory. Devilishly compelling, ‘Saint Maud’ deserves to be hailed as a new horror classic. Clemency
Sun 22 Nov 20:45 Mon 23 Nov 14:15
Winner of Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize, ‘Clemency’ is a deeply moving anatomy of the death penalty and its effect on everyone involved.
Years of carrying out death row executions are taking a toll on warden Bernadine Williams. As she prepares for the execution of ‘cop killer’ Anthony Woods, Williams must confront the psychological and emotional demons that her job creates. Alfre Woodard is Williams and you will not see a more nuanced performance all year than this career masterpiece portrayal of a woman whose crumbling convictions threaten to tear apart her life. The score by Kathryn Bostic is compelling, and while harrowing, the film is somehow elating. 2019 US Chinonye Chukwu 112m PERFORMANCE

This filmed version will reunite nearly all of the original cast from the West End run with Toby Jones starring alongside Richard Armitage and Rosalind Eleazar. This ‘sumptuous reimagining’ of Chekhov’s classic has an even greater resonance following the country’s lockdown, where a conflicted family are forced to confront their despair, and each other, while living on an isolated estate. The filmed version of the play will include the special moment when the cast reunite at the theatre for the filming, the first time since lockdown in mid-March. 155m including interval 8

Mank Hollywood auteur David Fincher’s take on screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of Orson Welles’s iconic masterpiece ‘Citizen Kane.’
Fri 27 Nov 17:45 Sat 28 Nov 14:15 Sun 29 Nov 20:45 Mon 30 Nov 14:15 Mon 30 Nov 20:45 Tue 1 Dec 17:45 Wed 2 Nov 20:45
There is serious Oscar buzz surrounding ‘Mank’ in which 1930s Hollywood is re-evaluated through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of ‘Citizen Kane’ for Orson Welles. Gary Oldman plays Mank, while Tom Burke is totally convincing as Welles. ‘Citizen Kane’ was directed by then 26-year-old Welles, who created a new template for Hollywood directors by retaining complete control over the edit of the movie. Charles Dance is William Randolph Hearst, the barely concealed subject of ‘Kane’ and Amanda Seyfried is Hearst’s girlfriend memorably lampooned in Welles’s film. Aaron Sorkin has called the film ‘freaky good,’ which is worth something from the writer of ‘The Social Network’. This is Fincher’s (‘Seven’, Fight Club’, ‘Curious Case of Benjamin Button’) first film since ‘Gone Girl’ (2014), and he is definitely back with a film that will be knocking on the door of all the major film awards. Summer of 85 Été 85
Fri 27 Nov 21:00 Wed 2 Dec 14:15
From Francois Ozon, the director of ‘Potiche’ and ‘Frantz’. A coming-of-age story of two teenage boys who fall in love at the coast during the hot cruel summer of 1985. Not since Ozon unveiled the noirish erotic sizzler ‘Swimming Pool’ at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival has the French director seduced audiences quite as brazenly as he does here. In the opening scene Alex is being arrested for the murder of his friend David - at least that’s what Ozon wants us to think. Via voiceover Alex transports us back to 1985 and the burgeoning love affair between the pair that crackles and spits with passionate energy. It’s an effervescent account of two souls who found one another for a single season, and how that shaped a young man’s sexual identity going forward. The Sleeping Car Murders

Compartiment Tueurs
Costa Gavras’s twisty whodunnit is pure Agatha Christie with bundles of camera trickery and an ingenious final act. A humorous, visually punchy take on the murder mystery. Six people share a sleeping compartment on a Paris-bound train. After they arrive, one of them is found strangled, and before long, the killer starts bumping off the remaining passengers. Yves Montand is superb as a harried police inspector coming down with the flu, who doggedly follows up every lead. Red herrings abound and the twists and thrills are masterfully executed with a dream cast including the late, great Michel Piccoli who died earlier this year. Om Det Oändliga
Lost souls and lonely hearts populate Roy Andersson’s deliciously odd follow-up to ‘A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence’. This is a sweet film spliced with devilish wit. The director revels in the humdrum in this series of vignettes that focus on ordinary people in ordinary situations. A priest suffers a loss of faith, an old waiter distractedly pours wine on a table, a man lashes out at his wife in the market. Love, life and death and the banalities of each are exposed. If you haven’t seen a Roy Andersson film then prepare yourself for a unique cinematic experience. (Subtitles) Sweden 2019 Roy Andersson 78m 10

Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar’s new short film starring Tilda Swinton, accompanied by a pre-recorded Q&A with Almodóvar and Swinton hosted by film critic Mark Kermode. Madness and melancholy intersect to thrilling effect as Almodóvar reimagines a Jean Cocteau short play for an era in which isolation has become a way of life. It is a free adaptation, and no-one could accuse Almodóvar of restraint. Swinton sweeps around the magazine-ready set-within-a-set first in huge, bell-shaped garments that toll noiselessly, and then in simple, bright clothes that emphasise her spare frame. She talks to her ex-lover on the phone and her clothing becomes softer, looser and more elaborately patterned; all the while, she gradually learns to lean in to her pain. Laws of desire become the rules of the game as she paces and panics in a glorious technicolor apartment where décor offers a window into her state of mind. Shot over nine days in Madrid in July and recently premiered to critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival. It is Writer/Director Almodóvar’s first work in the English language. He is one of Spain’s most celebrated filmmakers with numerous accolades to his name including an Academy Award (Best Screenplay for ‘Talk to Her’, four BAFTAs and numerous Goyas. Fri 27 Nov 14:15 Sat 28 Nov 17:45 Wed 2 Dec 17:45
Agonizingly beautiful adaptation of Jack London’s novel in which the eponymous Martin struggles to rise above his destitute circumstances to claim a place among the literary elite.
The setting is transposed to Italy where Martin (Luca Marinelli), an ill-educated labourer, saves a young man from being beaten up, and is invited to the boy’s family’s estate, where Martin meets his lovely sister, Elena (Jessica Cressy). Overwhelmed by the art and books in the house, as well as his love for Elena, he embarks on a journey of selfeducation to escape his roots. ‘A romance, of sorts, yet it also wields an anti-romantic ferocity, suggesting that the fissure between rich and poor is, whatever we yearn to think, unbridgeable.’ The New Yorker. Sam (Firth) and Tusker (Tucci) have been together for decades and now they’re taking a jolly trip to the lakes in a campervan. But both men are keeping secrets from one another. Tusker’s memory loss and confusion are worsening but will he let Sam protect him or will Tusker even allow him to try? The fierce colours of the countryside are nurtured by Dick Pope’s cinematography while Firth and Tucci’s chemistry is straight out of the laboratory. Their performances are pitch perfect, while the warmth and humour that spill from this wonderful film is as heartfelt as the streak of sorrow that runs through its centre. In the end, the film isn’t about raging against the dying of the light - like a supernova, what little light is left arrives long after a terminal diagnosis – but about turning resignation into acceptance. Carmilla
Fri 11 Dec 20:45 Mon 14 Dec 20:45 Thu 17 Dec 17:45
A richly atmospheric, coming-ofage love story set in the late 1800s and steeped in eerie mystery. Filmed in Sussex.
Lara lives with her father and her strict governess, Miss Fontaine, in total isolation, and is struggling to find an outlet for her curiosity and burgeoning sexuality. When a carriage crash nearby brings a young woman into the family home to recuperate, Lara and Carmilla strike up a passionate relationship. Director Emily Harris made a judicious choice not to follow Le Fanu’s source novel too closely or we would be left with another teenage vampire story. Instead we have a mesmerising tale of gothic romance that dodges single-minded polemics about female empowerment. There are scares but the emphasis favours foreboding over shocks. The Daedalus trilogy is coming to its conclusion. A global publishing sensation (think ‘Dragon Tattoo’ territory here), its publisher Eric has hired a crack team of translators in order to get the book out simultaneously in territories around the world. The first ten pages are leaked on the internet with more to come if a hefty ransom is not paid. Cue accusations, violence and gunfire as the eggheads turn on each other. ‘The Translators’ is pure guilty pleasure - tense hair-raising stuff that offers visceral thrills and the good sense to keep its best revelation to the end. Shirley
Mon 7 Dec 20:45 Thu 10 Dec 17:45
Elizabeth Moss is fast becoming one of the finest actresses of her generation and here she nails another portrayal – this time of horror writer Shirley Jackson. Unpredictable and captivating,‘Shirley’ is an unconventional biopic focusing on an imagined period when Jackson and her husband take in a younger couple, Rose and Fred. Initially Shirley is displeased by their presence but soon becomes fascinated with Rose, recognising a shared affinity for the macabre. There are echoes of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ as the older couple tear into each other. Shirley and her husband Stanley are like George and Martha on steroids gleefully wreaking havoc with the young couple’s lives. This is a bold film brimming with volatility. As an insight into the artistic inner life it is unflinching and riveting. US 2020 Josephine Decker 107m 16

Another Round Druk
An intriguing concept in which four friends decide to test a theory that maintaining a constant blood alcohol level will improve their lives.
Fri 11 Dec 17:45 Sat 12 Dec 17:45 Sun 13 Dec 20:45 Mon 14 Dec 14:15 Tue 15 Dec 14:15 Wed 16 Dec 17:45 Thu 17 Dec 14:15
Take one part deftly directed tragicomedy, add a dash of Mads Mikkelsen in vintage form, and you’ve got this intoxicating look at midlife crises. Mikkelsen is reunited with ‘The Hunt’ director Thomas Vinterberg in this riotously entertaining tragicomedy. Mads and three other disaffected teachers decide to follow a theory that promotes methodically prescribed all-day drinking to battle depression. To get their mojo back they furtively imbibe clear spirits decanted into mineral water bottles. Merely keeping a steady and low alcohol level inevitably proves too much as Mikkelsen’s Martin slides into alcoholism. ‘Another Round’ spirals into an ironic portrait of debauchery loaded with vicious twists, leading to hectic decisions both wrenching and hilarious. It’s a joy to see Vinterberg and Mikkelsen find their groove again. At the end of October, the 2020 BFI London Film Festival unveiled its virtual audience award winner for Best Film as none other than ‘Another Round’. (Subtitles) Denmark 2020 Thomas Vinterberg 115m

De Gaulle
Wed 16 Dec 14:15 Thu 17 Dec 20:45
Our closing film in this year’s French Film Festival UK. De Gaulle has rarely been fictionalised, popping up briefly in ‘Day of the Jackal’ and ‘Army of Shadows’. About time for a look at the pivotal point of his career. May 1940. France is facing a disastrous military situation against the German army. Charles de Gaulle (Lambert Wilson), newly appointed General, joins the Government in Paris while Yvonne, his wife, and their three children remain in the east. Faced with the defeatist attitude of Pétain who wants to negotiate with Hitler, de Gaulle has one intention only: to continue fighting. Alongside thousands of French families, Yvonne and the children are soon forced to flee the advancing German troops. Without contact with each another, the doubt arises: will the de Gaulle family be sacrificed for the sake of France? (Subtitles) France 2020 Gabriel Le Bomin 108m
Relic
Tue 15 Dec 20:45 Wed 16 Dec 20:45
A grandmother, mother and daughter are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family’s home.
When workaholic Kay (Emily Mortimer) receives a call from police telling her that her elderly mother Edna (Robyn Nevin) has been missing for a couple of days, she and her daughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) take a road trip to investigate. Edna is indeed absent but there are signs in the creepy house that things are amiss. No one listens to her on her return, something is not right in the house but putting Edna in a home is the main subject of conversation. This is eerie, slow burn stuff with things said and unsaid seething through the interactions between these three generations of women. ‘Relic’ is intelligent, articulate storytelling. The mounting sense of dread gets under your skin and stays there. A Christmas Gift From Bob
Fri 18 Dec 20:45 Mon 21 Dec 17:30 Tue 22 Dec 20:45 Wed 23 Dec 13:45 Thu 24 Dec 16:00
‘A Street Cat Named Bob’ surprised many with its touching story of a homeless musician and his feline companion. The sequel promises to be the perfect Yuletide film. James looks back at the last Christmas he and Bob spent scraping a living on the streets and how Bob helped him through one of his toughest times – providing strength, friendship and inspiration. Ultimately they end up teaching each other about the true meaning of Christmas spirit along the way. This is unashamedly feelgood fun. London looks like a winter wonderland, while Bob the cat steals every scene he stars in. This sort of film can put our horrible year in perspective and light up your Christmas Eve. Bicycle Thieves

Ladri di biciclette
NEW 4K RESTORATION: One of cinema’s simplest stories told with tenderness – a man’s bicycle is stolen and his job and life depend on reclaiming it. One of the all-time greats! Non-professional actors, amazing location shooting in post-war Rome and populated with working-class characters. If this is your introduction to Italian Neorealism, you couldn’t begin in a better place. Antonio is offered a job that requires a bicycle. His wife pawns some possessions and Antonio has his bike which is promptly stolen. He embarks on a quest to reclaim it accompanied by Bruno his young son. De Sica carefully balances a generally tragic sensibility with a quiet undercurrent of hope, all the while sucking us into the story with the sheer urgency of the search for the stolen bicycle. Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, ‘Fleabag’ is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. 5-Stars! ‘Witty, filthy and supreme.’ The Guardian 105m - No interval.

A Christmas Carol
Sun 20 Dec 17:45 Tue 22 Dec 14:15 This radical new take on the classic Thu 24 Dec 13:00 Christmas tale seeks both to exhume the original story’s gritty commentary on social inequality and greed, and to breathe new life into the lyricism of the original text. A Victorian family prepares a paper theatre for a performance of ‘A Christmas Carol’. The audience enters the imagination of one of the children and the cardboard stage transforms to reveal a magical world containing real dancers and stylised sets. The classic tale unfolds in a rich tapestry of highly absorbing, theatrical drama featuring sumptuous visual effects inspired by the techniques of early cinema. In a daring twist characters are portrayed by dancers and voiced by an eclectic cast of the world’s most recognisable actors. The mix of danced action and spoken narration brings fresh dimension to Dickens’ characters and poetic language, whilst remaining true to the beauty of the author’s original narrative. Choreography by Russell Maliphant. Cast includes Simon Russell Beale, Martin Freeman and Carey Mulligan. UK 2020 Jacqui Morris 96m

Billie
Sun 20 Dec 20:45 Wed 23 Dec 20:45
In 1971, journalist Linda Kuehl set out to write the definitive biography of Billie Holiday. The book was never finished and the 200 hours of extraordinary interviews remained unheard until now. Billie Holiday’s remarkable career was cut short in 1959 aged 44 with 77 cents in her bank account. Interviews with friends and family, insight from Tony Bennett and even an arresting officer from one of her notorious drug busts provide unprecedented appraisal of the legendary jazz singer. Testimony from a chuckling pimp who pressed her into prostitution at the age of 16 is particularly troubling. Holiday died of cirrhosis having been arrested in her hospital bed just a month earlier.
