Chichester Cinema How do you follow such a marvellous season of films such as the one that we have just had? Well, you step up, and produce an even stronger, more varied array. We are offering an especially strong season of British Cinema, with films such as ‘Their Finest’, ‘Trespass Against Us’, ‘A Quiet Passion’, ‘Sense of an Ending’ and ‘Free Fire’ on show. Alongside the local talent, we have vibrant European Cinema (‘The Olive Tree’, ‘Elle’), mesmerizing Asian Cinema (‘Age of Shadows’, ‘The Handmaiden’), award-winning World Cinema (‘The Salesman’, ‘Neruda’) plus hand-picked quality USA Cinema (‘Personal Shopper’, ‘The Lost City of Z’). If you missed any of the great films last season, we give you a final opportunity to catch these award winners. Or, you may want to share them with your loved ones and reward yourself a second viewing. These include Oscar Best Film ‘La La Land’ – oops – I mean ‘Moonlight’, ‘Manchester by the Sea’, ‘Lion’, ‘Sully’, ‘Jackie’ and of course BAFTA Best Film ‘La La Land’. We are proud to welcome Director Robert Mullen in April to present his film ‘Mad to be Normal’. Robert, who has brought three of his previous films to New Park (including ‘We Will Sing’), will introduce the film, and stay for a Q&A session afterwards. In the Cinema Foyer, you will find a sample seat that is similar to the ones we are ordering for the Summer refit Moonlight (the armrests and upholstery are different), so next time you are in, try it out and tell me what you think. We have raised funds through our Winter Raffle, Film Quiz, and your loyal viewing of the wonderful films that we programme for you. These upgrades will be installed in July, and will be ready for the Opening Gala of the 26th Chichester International Film Festival on Thursday 10th August. I have some great news regarding our founder and Chichester Film Festival Artistic Director Roger Gibson. He has been invited to be on the Jury at the forthcoming ‘Directors’ Fortnight’ of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. We are proud to have Roger representing us at this most prestigious of film festivals, and know that he will come back with a bagful of quality films for our own Film Festival. See you at the Cinema

Ken Loach’s 2016 Cannes Palme D’Or and Best British Film BAFTA Winner is not to be missed. A middle aged carpenter (Dave Johns), who requires state welfare after injuring himself, is joined by a single mother (Hayley Squires) in a similarly challenging scenario. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain. A funny, provocative and revealing account of the life and career of one of Britain’s foremost filmmakers, Ken Loach, as he turns eighty and looks back at over fifty years of filmmaking. Loach is a director known for his naturalistic, social realist directing style and for his socialism, which are evident in his film treatment of social issues such as homelessness and labour rights. Unlike virtually all his contemporaries, he has never succumbed to the siren call of Hollywood, and it’s virtually impossible to imagine his particular brand of British social realism translating well to that context. Makhmalbaf made the film in Iran in 1990, but it was banned by Iranian censors. In 2016, some parts of the original negative were stolen from the archives of the Iranian censor and smuggled to the West allowing Makhmalbaf to restore the film. The restored version opened the Venice Classics section of the 2016 Venice Film Festival. The film tells the story of an anthropologist and his daughter, and it unfolds during three different periods: before, during and after the Islamic Revolution. The daughter works in ER at a local hospital, where she treats suicidal patients. The reason behind each suicide attempt is different, especially before and after the Revolution. Looking for a reason to be alive, one of the suicidal patients falls in love with the anthropologist’s daughter. However it is a forbidden love with some unexpected consequences. An audacious critique of the disastrous legacy of the Spanish Civil War, it is set in a rural 1940s Spanish village haunted by betrayal and regret. Existing in a highly evocative dreamlike state, it’s a powerfully symbolic, richly allegorical tale that is as unique as it is beautiful. This is a single-take German thriller sensation. Set in Berlin we go on a wild ride with a Spanish girl Victoria, picked up by Berliners in a night club. It was indeed filmed in one take, but while you admire the technical panache, the film holds up very well as a thriller. There hasn’t ever been a film quite like this multi-awards winner. With the recent death of Leonard Cohen, we are reprising Tony Palmer’s 1972 documentary remastered in 2015, where the gravel-voiced songsmith moodily strolls through the byways of various European venues and is seen in concert performing. Palmer directs this film documenting Leonard Cohen’s 1972 ‘Bird on a Wire’ tour. He juxtaposes Vietnam War footage and home movies from Cohen’s childhood into the performance footage, creating a powerful testament to the singer’s unique fusion of poetry and politics. Later the film changes mood, as Dickinson is confronted with illness, death and disappointment. This very faithful recreation of Dickinson’s world never feels stolid. Tony is a mildly grumpy septuagenarian who lives comfortably enough while maintaining a hole-in-the-wall camera store that exclusively stocks second-hand Leicas. He rather uselessly accompanies his heavily pregnant lesbian daughter Susie (Michelle Dockery) to birthing class and seems devoid of any consuming interests or close friends. Sending his serene life into choppy waters is the arrival of a legal letter revealing an unexpected cash bequest from a late school chum, as well as a promised copy of the man’s diary. We are treated to flashbacks of Tony’s earlier years (played by Billy Howle), covering his intense admiration for the handsome and brilliant Adrian (Joe Alwyn) and his equivocal courtship of the alluring but elusive Veronica (Freya Mavor). This adaptation of the widely praised Julian Barnes novel is very well served by Broadbent, who is smooth and self-effacing as the old-timer whose view of himself and the past acquires significant clarity. From the opening scenes, which show Neruda (Luis Gnecco) holding court over a bacchanal in his luxurious home with his wife, the painter Delia del Carril (Mercedes Morán), Larraín places Neruda in the framework of a detective story, the poet’s favourite prose genre, pursued by the fatuous detective Óscar Peluchonneau (Gael García Bernal). Occupation, Resistance and the Cinema Day Course In these challenging times of political change and contest, and passionate belief and debate - Brexit and Remain, war, poverty and refugees, pro- and anti-Trump supporters, news and fake news reporting, myths, censorship and memories - a fascinating opportunity to explore the interrelationships between historical and contemporary struggles for power, and notions of invasion, occupation and resistance, both in WW2 in Europe, and beyond. Films to be referenced will include examples like ‘Kanal’ (Poland 1956); ‘Flame and Citron’ (Denmark 2008); ‘Army of Shadows’ (France 1969), ‘Lacombe Lucien’ (France 1974), ‘Au Revoir Les Enfants’ (France 1987); ‘The Battle of Algiers’ (Italy/Algeria 1966); ‘It Happened Here’ (UK 1965) and ‘Went the Day Well’ (UK 1942).
