welcome to
Chichester Cinema Welcome to another lovely English Spring – full of sunshine (we hope), full of gardening (we assume), and full of vibrant cinematic opportunities here at New Park (we assure!). Keep Sunday 15 April free, as our founder Roger Gibson will be hosting an afternoon entitled ‘My Life in Film’, where he will guide us through his (and our) passion – Cinema. Roger will present some short clips of his favourite films and enlighten us on how his love for cinema has evolved, from going to his local theatre at a young age to being the life-force behind Chichester Cinema at New Park. With so many sold out screenings in this past Awards season, we are taking the opportunity to bring back some of the more popular films this Spring – for those who could not get a seat, or for those who just want to re-watch some of the best films of the year to date. These favourites accompany another diverse swag of the best cinema from the UK and abroad. Wes Anderson has a new film (‘Isle of Dogs’) that will make up a series of his films that we will screen on four consecutive weeks… we call it ‘Tuesdays with Wes’. Other highlights include the WW2 set ‘Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’, the Palme D’Or winner ‘The Square’, the Indian epic ‘Padmaavat’, ‘On Chesil Beach’, ‘Jeune Femme’, and two classics that have been remastered: ‘Silence of the Lambs’ and ‘Look Back in Anger’. Thanks to everyone who helped make our ‘Mind for Movies Film Quiz’ another huge success this past March 10th. It was thoroughly enjoyed by the 120 quizzers, many of whom have thanked us for putting on such a fun-filled evening, and promised to be back again next year. We raised just over £2,300 which we will put straight back in to making our Cinema the best it can possibly be. See you at the Cinema

Set in the Holy Land in the first century, this film is faithful to the widely received story of Christ. Rooney Mara is mesmeric as Mary Magdalene, her vulnerability is part of what makes her into one of the best actors to her generation. We follow her life, passing through events such as the raising of Lazarus, Palm Sunday, the last supper and of course the crucifixion itself. The film makers have included a beautifully nuanced female-centric narrative to a story many of us thought we already knew. Joaquin Phoenix puts in a robust performance as Jesus, however it is Tahar Rahim as who manages to put in a scenestealing turn as Judas Iscariot. Look out for the brilliantly versatile Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter. UK/Australia 2018 Garth Davis 120m.

My Golden Days Trois Souvenirs de ma Jeunesse A movie about looking back, in more ways than one. The film consists of the nostalgic reveries of a middle-age man who’s about to trade his globe-trotting existence for a quieter life back home in France. Paul Dédalus (played by Mathieu Almaric as an Adult and Quentin Dolmaire as a teenager) is an anthropologist preparing to leave Tajikistan, who has a series of flashbacks that include his childhood in Roubaix, his mother’s attacks of madness and his father’s alienating depression. He remembers his trip to the USSR, where a clandestine mission led him to offer up his own identity for a young Russian, whom he considered a phantom twin for the remainder of his life as well as remembering Esther, the beautiful, rude love of his life. A beautifully sensitive film, full of surprising changes of rhythm and tone. (Subtitles) France 2015 Arnaud Desplechin 123m.

Bolshoi Ballet A ballet with music by Adolphe Adam and choreography by Yuri Grigorovich. When Giselle learns that her beloved Albrecht is promised to another woman, she dies of a broken heart in his arms. Prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova personifies this ultimate ballerina role in the classical repertoire, alongside the sensational Sergei Polunin as Albrecht, in this chilling, yet luminous ballet that continues to captivate audiences for over 150 years at the Bolshoi. Captured live on Oct 11, 2015, Music – Adolphe Adam; Choreography – Yuri Grigorovich; Libretto – Theophile Gautier and Jean-Henry Saint-Georges. I Got Life! Aurore Cesar award-winner Agnès Jaoui gives an intelligent and affecting performance as Aurore; fifty, flirty and not so-thriving, her world is turned upside down when a past flame returns, reigniting her lust for life and love. Separated from her husband, Aurore also loses her job and to top it off, she learns that she will soon be a grandmother. She suddenly realizes that society is pushing her gently on a sideline, but when she unexpectedly encounters her youthful love, Aurore decides to rebel by refusing the fate that seems to her all predestined. What if a new life was about to be offered to her? This film about female solidarity, hope and love, is a witty and wonderful ode to embracing age whilst staying young. Bolshoi ballerina Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) is recruited to a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. When an injury ends her career, she has nowhere else to turn for support but her uncle (Matthias Schoenaerts), a dark-suited government executive who sends her to ‘sparrow school.’ Sparrows are trained courtesans and government operatives whose job is to use sex to elicit secrets. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations. Schoenaerts actually starts to look like Putin on a good day, and Jeremy Irons brings an old-style Stalinist flare to his military man in sunglasses. Lawrence nails the emotional conflict and physicality of the ballet dancer turned spy in this Cold War thriller, which also stars Charlotte Rampling, Ciarán Hinds, Joely Richardson and Joel Edgerton. USA 2018 Francis Lawrence 139m.

Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House This is a taut, timely thriller which takes us behind the scenes for a riveting peek at the life of the Watergate whistle-blower. The film centres on “Deep Throat”, the pseudonym given to the notorious whistle-blower who helped journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncover the Watergate scandal in 1974. The true identity of the secret informant remained a mystery and source of much public curiosity and speculation for more than 30 years. That is until, in 2005, special agent Mark Felt (Liam Neeson) shockingly revealed himself as the tipster. This unbelievable true story chronicles the personal and professional life of the brilliant and uncompromising Felt, who risked and ultimately sacrificed everything – his family, his career, his freedom – in the name of justice. USA 2017 Peter Landesman 103m.

A group of 1980s wrestlers are forced to don the lycra one last time when their beloved local pub is threatened with closure. The film centres on The Panthers, once a staple of British wrestling’s heyday, drawing in millions of viewers both at live events and on shows like ITV’s World of Sport. Think low-budget, Bingo Hall chic – and stars like Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks. But that was 30 years ago. And where once they were likely to find themselves locked in a painful submission hold on a Saturday night, now it’s more probable it’s a lock-in their local pub, The Half Nelson. Stephen Graham (‘This is England’), Dave Johns (‘I, Daniel Blake’) and Jill Halfpenny (‘Humans’) are joined by Julian Sands and Jason Flemyng in a film which recalls ‘Billy Elliott’ and ‘The Full Monty’. A real crowd-pleaser! UK 2018 Dan Cadan 108m.

Returns after the three Sold Out January Screenings! A Zen Buddhist community have given up all their possessions and signed up to a life of chastity to practise the art of mindfulness with the world-famous teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. Filmed over three years, in their monastery in rural France and on the road in the USA, this visceral film is a meditation on a community grappling with existential questions and the everyday routine of monastic life. As the seasons come and go, the monastics’ pursuit for a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them is amplified by insights from Thich Nhat Hanh’s early journals. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose voice is another ingredient to the stillness of the project, delivering the endless poetry with his baritone voice, extremely mindful of delicacy and warmth. A unique documentary spectacle that explores the power of silence and clarity. (Some subtitles) UK 2017 Marc J. Francis, Max Pugh 94m.

This is the searing documentary of a lost cultural icon, a story of art, sport, sexuality, and rebellion. A few years before Torvill and Dean became the face of British figure skating, John Curry became the 1976 Olympic and World champion. He makes for a fascinating subject due to his impact on the world of professional skating. The film highlights early on Curry’s struggle with his mental health, as well as the pressure placed upon him as a gay sportsman in the 1970s. Raised as a middle-class boy in an unglamorous corner of Birmingham, Curry was not allowed to attend ballet classes, his father let him skate because that was protected by the umbrella of ‘sport’. Curry went on to become the best in the world. In this excellent documentary we are treated to impressive (some previously unseen) footage of the skater in all of his magnificence. Unlike most directors, Wes Anderson’s films can truly be considered originals – they are ‘wonder-full’ in the true sense of the word. Wes Anderson’s brand new dark comedy is a stop-motion adventure story of a boy searching for his beloved dog, set in Japan in a near future where canines are no longer considered “man’s best friend”. The boy (Koyu Rankin) journeys to the ‘Isle of Dogs’ to rescue ‘Spots’ (Liev Schreiber), and gets help from a pack of misfit canines (Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, F. Murray Abraham and Tilda Swinton) who have also been exiled. His quest inspires a group of dog lovers to expose a government conspiracy. ‘Isle of Dogs’ emerges as a profoundly Andersonian tribute to his love of Japanese cinema, particularly to Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli), as well as the late, legendary Akira Kurosawa. This stunning achievement is one of Anderson’s most handsomely realized visions yet. (Some subtitles) USA 2018 Wes Anderson 99m.

Steven Soderbergh’s new film sees a young woman involuntarily committed to a mental institution, where she is confronted by her greatest fear – but is it real or a product of her delusion? Despite moving away from home and rebooting her life, Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy) still suffers the trauma of being stalked by an obsessive man. Then, after a therapy session, she is involuntarily committed to a mental institution where her worst fears are realised and her grip on reality loosens. The entire film is shot on iPhones, nourishing the mood of nasty, queasy unease. The image quality is cold and grainy, feeling surreptitiously snatched rather than framed, and lending a sense of grubby voyeurism to the experience. This raw, lean and abrasively effective thriller presents Foy (‘Wolf Hall’ and ‘The Crown’) as we’ve never seen her before. USA 2018 Steven Soderbergh 97m.

Look Back in Anger This film that spawned a new genre of British social-protest films, has been given new life by a BFI re-master. Sunday’s screening will be introduced by Rosemary Coxon (Cinema Education Officer). Archetypal British “angry young man” Jimmy Porter (Richard Burton) is a university-educated bloke who can’t seem to get any better job than working in a candy store. Jimmy’s relationship with his wife Alison (Mary Ure) alternates between hugs and kisses when he’s feeling good and verbal abuse when he’s down on himself. Alison’s best friend Helena (Claire Bloom) advises Alison to escape her injurious marriage. Left with no one for a punching bag, Jimmy romances Helena. Playwright John Osborne (at that time married to Mary Ure) uses Jimmy Porter as a spokesman for Osborne’s own spleen-venting harangues against the British government and class system. Based on Brian Selznick’s critically acclaimed novel, Ben and Rose are children from two different eras who secretly wish their lives were different. In 1927, the born-deaf Rose (Millicent Simmonds) runs away from home to pursue silent-movie star Lillian Mayhew in New York. In 1977, the newly deaf orphan Ben (Oakes Fegley) runs away from home to find his birth father in that same metropolis. Their stories converge, in a sense, at the American Museum of Natural History, where Todd Haynes (‘I’m Not There’, ‘Carol’) weaves a tale of innocence lost that is bold if only for its lack of cynicism. There’s hardly a moment here that isn’t gorgeously framed, and Haynes seems to take particular pleasure in meticulously recreating the Manhattan street scenes of two such distinctive decades. Shaken by what he reads, Goodman embarks on a mission to find rational explanations for these ghostly stories. Maxine Peake gives a formidable performance as an aspiring female comedian standing up to a violent husband and the sexist Northern England club circuit. If you think that modern comedy is still lacking in gender equality, then this tough, streetwise British film shows that it’s also made giant strides since the in-your-face chauvinism of working men’s clubs in decades past. And yet, ill-treatment by men is something our eponymous heroine is grimly used to, from childhood beatings to an abusive husband. More a film about the power of laughter and how to transform pain into humour than a straight-up comedy, ‘Funny Cow’ is a fitting showcase for Peake. So often dazzling on stage and television, she’s hilarious and heart-breaking here. There’s fine support too from cast-against-type Paddy Considine as her middle-class paramour and a swooning, melancholic soundtrack by Richard Hawley. UK 2018 Adrian Shergold 102m.

A celebration of the quiet strength of the human spirit, dealing with issues of loss, masculinity, and love through the lives of an eighteenyear-old oil field worker, and his mother, who has for years been living with Parkinson’s. Judy (Shirley Henderson) is a woman struggling to live with Parkinson’s Disease while trying to launch her son Jamie into the world. “You’ve got to live your life,” she tells Jamie in one particularly poignant scene following a death that will leave her alone to fend for herself in her isolated northern home. Jamie (Théodore Pellerin) has plenty of troubles of his own, among them a hard, lonely life working as a roughneck in the oil patch and trying to come to terms with his sexual identity. Henderson (‘Trainspotting’, ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’) delivers a truly impressive performance as Judy, allowing us to see the strong, sensitive woman behind the disability. Let the Sunshine In Un Beau Soleil Intérieur Claire Denis’ latest film sees Isabelle (Juliette Binoche), Parisian artist, divorced mother, looking for love – true love at last. Isabelle is a middle-aged divorcée hopping from relationship to relationship with men – there’s the businessman who likes to boss her around, which she admits turns her on; there’s the handsome actor who seems to overthink and doubt everything; there’s her ex-husband, for whom she still has affection but who already appears to be moving on. This is an exquisite romantic comedy whose laughs are sad and whose sadness is funny. The ending is a genuine knockout. If the romantic comedy is practically defined by its journey toward resolution, then this film completely upends the formula, closing out instead on a delirious, hilarious vision of utter dissolution. This is no ordinary adventure movie – this is an important step in this ever-changing world of film making. This is a film produced, written, and performed by a predominantly black cast and crew. T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), King of the mythical country Wakanda, rises to the throne in the isolated, technologically advanced African nation, but his claim is challenged by a vengeful outsider (Michael B Jordan) who was a childhood victim of T’Challa’s father’s mistake. After the 2017 Oscars, many people were outraged that the individual acting nominations were given exclusively to white performers. Since then, the subject of diversity and representation has been especially present, so ‘Black Panther’ may just make positive waves in the world of Hollywood. Also stars Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett and Forrest Whitaker. USA 2018 Ryan Coogler 134m.

This enthralling film is a wonderful tribute to the late John Hurt. He plays Ralph, a once famous writer who is terminally ill and wants to be reconciled with his long-abandoned son Michael. When Michael comes to his Portuguese villa, Ralph’s long-suffering wife looks to create the perfect environment, but he manages to ruin things by picking a fight with his son’s girlfriend. The clock is ticking, as Ralph has invited a mysterious ‘visitor’ (Charles Dance) to provide him with a painless end to his life. But the visitor plays a devastating trick. Ralph ‘wakes up’ to face the damaged potential that life still holds for him and with his second chance he has a short window of opportunity to right some wrongs. This gentlepaced adaptation of N.J. Crisp’s 1996 play builds steadily toward an irresistibly moving finale. UK/Portugal 2017 Eric Styles 92m.

Shirley Collins was at the epicentre of the folk music revival during the 1960’s and ‘70s, before a vocal disorder robbed her of her uniquely ancestral singing voice. In 1978, Collins was performing the folk standard Lark Rise at the National Theatre in London, when she suddenly lost her voice. It took her several years of appointments and examinations to receive the diagnosis of dysphonia. Visits to various English festivals and intimate access to recording sessions for her 2016 album Lodestar, Collins speaks movingly about the music she has worked so hard to catalogue and enliven for years. Making adventurous use of a motherlode of seminal archive audio, ‘The Ballad of Shirley Collins’ chronicles one woman’s gallant battle to rise phoenix-like from long silent ashes. In 1962 England, a young couple find their idyllic romance colliding with issues of sexual freedom and societal pressure, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night. Adapted by Ian McEwan from his bestselling novel, the drama centres on a young couple of drastically different backgrounds in the summer of 1962. Edward (Billy Howle) and Florence (Saoirse Ronan), newly-married and very much in love, arrive at a grand old inn on the Dorset coast for their honeymoon; they’ll leave with a very different understanding of who they are and what they actually want out of life. While downstairs the hotel is full of guests, they are achingly alone with each other and the momentous thing that is supposed to happen. As pressure mounts in the hotel room, Cooke smoothly tells their backstories in a series of flashbacks, each stimulated by something the couple says or feels. UK 2018 Dominic Cooke 100m.

Having lived under the domineering restraints of her husband in the early years of their marriage, Edie then devotes thirty years of care because of a blood clot that left him immobile and totally dependent. His final passing gives Edie a freedom she has long desired, even though her daughter (Wendy Morgan) would rather have peace of mind by exiling her into a local care home. His decline was as stratospheric as his ascendancy, and his glittering career was essentially over by 1949. These three Friday afternoon sessions will show extracts from all his masterpieces, together with unique readings of extracts from his private correspondence, all delivered with Nick’s customary humour and stimulating style. This one day film history course will consider the preoccupations of the conspiracy thriller as it continues to evolve from grim silent beginnings in pre-Nazi Germany towards current visions of our dystopian societies. Starting from ‘Dr Mabuse’ (1922), we will arrive at ‘The Fifth Estate’ (2013) via films by Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Costa-Gavras, Pakula and many others.” This talk marks the first in a series of talks and films in our ‘Thriller’ season.

Spiriting Away: An interactive workshop with Richard Cupidi What is this phenomenon called Studio Ghibli? Their animated films have been described as action adventures, political allegories, love stories, eco-fables, transformative tales, poetic realism, childhood magic or cultural treasures; others simply describe them as enchanting, painterly and exquisitely formed. Founded in 1985 by the dedicated animators Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has only 22-ish feature films to its credit, but these include masterpieces of animation such as the Oscar-winning ‘Spirited Away’ (which we will be screening on Sat 2 Jun), ‘Princess Mononoke’, ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ and ‘Grave of the Fireflies’. Despite its modest output, the Studio’s impact has been immense. In this friendly and informal workshop we’ll explore many of the supernatural territories and recurrent themes which animate Studio Ghibli’s output. We’ll also look behind the scenes at the Studio in action, watch Hayao Miyazaki prepare noodles, and discover the dedication it takes to produce their lovingly crafted animations. Most importantly, we’ll look in depth at how the films work cinematically, how they invite us in to their complex fantastical realms, and then take us along for the journey. Everyone welcome.

Charles Rollings is a BA (Hons) in Film & Drama Studies and United States Studies. He writes and lectures widely on history, literature, film, television and journalism, both in Britain and abroad. The author of three books, he has also been involved in documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4. All welcome.
