Chichester Cinema Welcome to another lovely English Spring – full of sunshine (we hope), full of gardening (we assume), and full of vibrant cinematic opportunities here at New Park (we assure!).

Keep Sunday 15 April free, as our founder Roger Gibson will be hosting an afternoon entitled ‘My Life in Film’, where he will guide us through his (and our) passion – Cinema. Roger will present some short clips of his favourite films and enlighten us on how his love for cinema has evolved, from going to his local theatre at a young age to being the life-force behind Chichester Cinema at New Park.

With so many sold out screenings in this past Awards season, we are taking the opportunity to bring back some of the more popular films this Spring – for those who could not get a seat, or for those who just want to re-watch some of the best films of the year to date.

These favourites accompany another diverse swag of the best cinema from the UK and abroad. Wes Anderson has a new film (‘Isle of Dogs’) that will make up a series of his films that we will screen on four consecutive weeks… we call it ‘Tuesdays with Wes’. Other highlights include the WW2 set ‘Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’, the Palme D’Or winner ‘The Square’, the Indian epic ‘Padmaavat’, ‘On Chesil Beach’, ‘Jeune Femme’, and two classics that have been remastered: ‘Silence of the Lambs’ and ‘Look Back in Anger’.

Thanks to everyone who helped make our ‘Mind for Movies Film Quiz’ another huge success this past March 10th. It was thoroughly enjoyed by the 120 quizzers, many of whom have thanked us for putting on such a fun-filled evening, and promised to be back again next year.

We raised just over £2,300 which we will put straight back in to making our Cinema the best it can possibly be.

Set in the Holy Land in the first century, this film is faithful to the widely received story of Christ.

Rooney Mara is mesmeric as Mary Magdalene, her vulnerability is part of what makes her into one of the best actors to her generation. We follow her life, passing through events such as the raising of Lazarus, Palm Sunday, the last supper and of course the crucifixion itself. The film makers have included a beautifully nuanced female-centric narrative to a story many of us thought we already knew. Joaquin Phoenix puts in a robust performance as Jesus, however it is Tahar Rahim as who manages to put in a scenestealing turn as Judas Iscariot. Look out for the brilliantly versatile Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter.

My Golden Days Trois Souvenirs de ma Jeunesse A movie about looking back, in more ways than one. The film consists of the nostalgic reveries of a middle-age man who’s about to trade his globe-trotting existence for a quieter life back home in France.

Paul Dédalus (played by Mathieu Almaric as an Adult and Quentin Dolmaire as a teenager) is an anthropologist preparing to leave Tajikistan, who has a series of flashbacks that include his childhood in Roubaix, his mother’s attacks of madness and his father’s alienating depression. He remembers his trip to the USSR, where a clandestine mission led him to offer up his own identity for a young Russian, whom he considered a phantom twin for the remainder of his life as well as remembering Esther, the beautiful, rude love of his life. A beautifully balanced selection of ballet performances are on offer this season, made up of the Bolshoi, Royal Opera House and Matthew Bourne. We have two operas from Italy (Bologna and Milan), plus another live transmission from the Berlin Philharmonic, to go alongside the six Theatre offerings we present. These include two Oscar Wildes, two Shakespeares, an American classic, and another in the Comédie Française season. We are also proud to present a special event live from the Royal Albert Hall, commemorating 75 years to the day since the Dam Busters made their mark on world history.

In this darkly comic drama, a mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter’s murder.

After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand swept all the Awards with this performance) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at Chief of Police William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson).

Set in a dugout in Aisne in 1918, it is the story of a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, variously awaiting their fate.

Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin) is the much-admired commanding officer waiting nervously for an expected German onslaught. They are under-manned and underequipped but ordered to “hold them up as long as you can”. Stanhope holds himself together with whisky but sticks it out because “it’s the only thing a decent man can do”.

With the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. Comédie Française The Comédie Française is offering UK audiences the chance to enjoy emblematic repertoire plays in the original French with English subtitles. Following the successful transmission of ‘Le Misanthrope’ we present the classic romantic comedy ‘Cyrano De Bergerac’, captured live from the Salle Richelieu of La Comédie Française Paris.

Handsome cadet Christian de Neuvillette falls madly in love with the beautiful Roxane, who is poised to be married off to the Viscount Valvert. In order to woo her for himself, Christian approaches fellow cadet and poet Cyrano de Bergerac. Denis Podalydes acts and directs Edmond Rostand’s timeless romantic drama, which combines slapstick comedy, tragedy and symbolist poetry. In French with English subtitles.

Lawrence nails the emotional conflict and physicality of the ballet dancer turned spy in this Cold War thriller, which also stars Charlotte Rampling, Ciarán Hinds, Joely Richardson and Joel Edgerton.

A few years before Torvill and Dean became the face of British figure skating, John Curry became the 1976 Olympic and World champion. He makes for a fascinating subject due to his impact on the world of professional skating. The film highlights early on Curry’s struggle with his mental health, as well as the pressure placed upon him as a gay sportsman in the 1970s. Raised as a middle-class boy in an unglamorous corner of Birmingham, Curry was not allowed to attend ballet classes, his father let him skate because that was protected by the umbrella of ‘sport’. Curry went on to become the best in the world. In this excellent documentary we are treated to impressive (some previously unseen) footage of the skater in all of his magnificence.

He slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community.

Deftly balancing humour and grief, the film is fueled by wonderfully human performances and fully realized characters. It is a small but big-hearted movie that deserves more attention than it is likely to get.

If you think that modern comedy is still lacking in gender equality, then this tough, streetwise British film shows that it’s also made giant strides since the in-your-face chauvinism of working men’s clubs in decades past. And yet, ill-treatment by men is something our eponymous heroine is grimly used to, from childhood beatings to an abusive husband. More a film about the power of laughter and how to transform pain into humour than a straight-up comedy, ‘Funny Cow’ is a fitting showcase for Peake. So often dazzling on stage and television, she’s hilarious and heart-breaking here.

There’s fine support too from cast-against-type Paddy Considine as her middle-class paramour and a swooning, melancholic soundtrack by Richard Hawley.

To try and overcome a lifetime of bitterness and resentment, eighty four year old Edie (Sheila Hancock) decides to climb a mountain in Scotland.

Having lived under the domineering restraints of her husband in the early years of their marriage, Edie then devotes thirty years of care because of a blood clot that left him immobile and totally dependent. His final passing gives Edie a freedom she has long desired, even though her daughter (Wendy Morgan) would rather have peace of mind by exiling her into a local care home. But Edie, once a “wild child”, and in good health for her age, has other ideas – to fulfil a promise she and her now departed father had once planned … to climb mount Suilven together. Hancock anchors the film effortlessly in a stunning performance that seems almost tailor made for her, and it would be an understatement to say Scotland has never looked so incredibly awe-inspiring on film before.

Jeune Femme Montparnasse Bienvenue This 2017 Cannes hit by debutante Léonor Serraille, stars the brilliantly vibrant Laetitia Dosch as an aimless young woman trying to get by in Montparnasse.

With a mane of Pre-Raphaelite hair, and an impossibly furry white cat clasped to her chest, 31-year-old Paula (Dosch) moves across Paris in the wake of a breakup. The feline, whom Paula has catnapped from ex-boyfriend Joachim (Grégoire Monsaingeon), has a stern face peering out from a formless mound of fluff and steals every scene. Whether replying to job interview questions with a sense of humour, or answering the door of her motel room naked, Paula acts according to impulse, not reflecting on whether it is serving her well. But as the film progresses, and as Paula drags herself up and out of one difficult situation after another, we see her not so much as unhinged as unique. The Life and Career of a Hollywood Legend We are delighted to welcome back Hollywood cinema expert Nick Smedley to introduce us to the astounding career of a key figure during Hollywood’s golden years.

Sturges was the first writer/director of the sound period in Hollywood, and produced, in the 1940s, some of the most hilarious and insightful satires ever made in America. His decline was as stratospheric as his ascendancy, and his glittering career was essentially over by 1949. These three Friday afternoon sessions will show extracts from all his masterpieces, together with unique readings of extracts from his private correspondence, all delivered with Nick’s customary humour and stimulating style. This is the first in a series looking at key films and figures in cinema history.

We delighted to welcome Nick Scudamore to introduce our thriller season. Nick is a well-known lecturer, cinema manager and academic both in the UK and abroad. He recently gave the introductory talk at the BFI for their Thriller event.

Nick defines thrillers thus; “In cinema the term ‘thriller’ is very loosely used. This one day film history course will consider the preoccupations of the conspiracy thriller as it continues to evolve from grim silent beginnings in pre-Nazi Germany towards current visions of our dystopian societies. Starting from ‘Dr Mabuse’ (1922), we will arrive at ‘The Fifth Estate’ (2013) via films by Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Costa-Gavras, Pakula and many others.” This talk marks the first in a series of talks and films in our ‘Thriller’ season.

Under the Microscope In conjunction with our one-off screening of this beautifully remastered modern classic, Gareth Evans presents an illustrated talk in the Studio.

Gareth will give us a detailed exposition, with many film clips, of one of the most famous thrillers of all time – The Silence of the Lambs – with exceptional performances by Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. Foster is used as a bait to draw out information from Dr Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) – a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath. Be afraid! Gareth Evans is a film journalist and Head of Media Studies at Bishop Luffa School. He has written for Little White Lies, Sorted magazine and writes regularly for various film education organisations.

We also present the remastered ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ on our big screen on Mon 30 Apr at 20:30.

Spiriting Away: An interactive workshop with Richard Cupidi What is this phenomenon called Studio Ghibli? Their animated films have been described as action adventures, political allegories, love stories, eco-fables, transformative tales, poetic realism, childhood magic or cultural treasures; others simply describe them as enchanting, painterly and exquisitely formed.

Founded in 1985 by the dedicated animators Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has only 22-ish feature films to its credit, but these include masterpieces of animation such as the Oscar-winning ‘Spirited Away’ (which we will be screening on Sat 2 Jun), ‘Princess Mononoke’, ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ and ‘Grave of the Fireflies’. Despite its modest output, the Studio’s impact has been immense. In this friendly and informal workshop we’ll explore many of the supernatural territories and recurrent themes which animate Studio Ghibli’s output. We’ll also look behind the scenes at the Studio in action, watch Hayao Miyazaki prepare noodles, and discover the dedication it takes to produce their lovingly crafted animations. Most importantly, we’ll look in depth at how the films work cinematically, how they invite us in to their complex fantastical realms, and then take us along for the journey. Everyone welcome.

In a series of three, two-hour lectures that you can’t refuse, Charles Rollings covers almost a century of gangster movies, illustrated with movie clips, stills, lobby-cards, posters and studio shots.

Starting with the silent era and the masterpiece ‘Underworld’ (1927), he’ll take you for an action-packed ride through the landmark biopics, heist movies, film noirs and film stars right up to today’s epics, re-makes and the ‘geezer-gangster’.

Charles Rollings is a BA (Hons) in Film & Drama Studies and United States Studies. He writes and lectures widely on history, literature, film, television and journalism, both in Britain and abroad. The author of three books, he has also been involved in documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4. All welcome.
