Dear Comrades Follow us
welcome to
Chichester Cinema at New Park What a wonderful restart we have had. The whole team here at New Park Cinema thanks everyone who has made our reopening a huge success - the Staff, the Volunteers, the Trustees, the New Park Centre Team and most importantly of all - You! The New Park audience has surely outdone itself this time by contributing to three weeks of regular sell-out screenings throughout our recent Awards Season. Your kind words and support have added joy to our little cinematic corner of the world. For this Spring Season programme, we are delighted to present an unmissable film - ‘The Father’, starring Olivia Colman and Oscar/Bafta Best Actor winner, Anthony Hopkins (pictured left), and focussed around the struggles of dementia. Much like ‘Nomadland’ in our last season, please do get in early for your tickets, as they will surely disappear quickly. This programme of films spans across both sides of June 21, that magical date when social distancing is due to be relaxed. Our intention is to go back to a normal auditorium layout once this happens. We do however hope to trial some selected socially distanced screenings for those not ready to return to a full auditorium. At the time of going to print, the decision had not yet been made by the Government, so please do visit our website regularly, or better, join our Mailing List by clicking the link in the footer of our website. You will be the first to know of any changes. Please note that we have new face-to-face Box Office opening hours. From June 11, these will be 15:00 to 16:00, seven days a week. Keep in mind that you can book online at any time, or call from 12:00 to 20:00 any day. As soon as we get the go-ahead from the New Park Centre, we hope to return to normal box office hours. On pg10&11, you will find some details of this year’s 29th Chichester International Film Festival, including how to become a vital part of the event by signing up as a Festival Patron. Contact me (walter@chichestercinema.org) for details on how to support the best fim festival on the south coast. See you at the Cinema Walter Francisco

Isabelle Huppert plays a terminally ill French actress who gathers her family together in the picturesque Portuguese village of Sintra in this summery Rohmer-esque film that unravels over a single day. Huppert is joined by Marisa Tomei, Greg Kinnear and Brendan Gleeson as her character Frankie tries to ameliorate family relations before her cancer overwhelms her. This is not a film burdened by much plot. Instead, we are invited to observe the complex familial relationships and ponder upon love and mortality. There is a resonance here of Richard Linklater’s delightful ‘Before’ films with its characters revealing through conversation and occasionally action, who they are and how they might change. Each character’s relationship is explored without clumsy exposition and Huppert’s performance is brilliantly aloof and often witty. Small, intimate and exquisitely shot Eric Rohmer would have approved. (Some subtitles) 2020 France Ira Sachs 100m

Tue 15 Jun 13:30 Frances McDormand stars as Fern, Wed 16 Jun 19:45 a widow and former teacher in Thu 17 Jun 16:45 a town wiped off the map by a factory closure, who is forced into piling some possessions into a tatty van and heading off. She roams an almost post-apocalyptic landscape finding temporary work here and there while learning how to survive from her fellow ‘nomads’. This is perhaps Mcdormand’s finest performance - keep in mind she has previously won Best Actress Oscars for her roles in ‘Fargo’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’ - bringing extraordinary empathy to her character’s human need to find connections against a background of desolation. Director Chloé Zhao provides a humanistic and understanding gaze, and after becoming only the second woman to win the Best Director Oscar, she surely has a big career ahead of her. Striking workers from a small industrial town face terrible consequences. Andrei Konchalovsky’s account of the day Red Army soldiers and KGB snipers opened fire on strikers is a rage-filled triumph A sinister chapter in Soviet history, the hushed-up 1962 massacre is captured in stark monochrome from veteran director Andrei Konchalovsky. Yuliya Vysotskaya – a longtime Konchalovsky player – plays Lyuda, a Communist party official and single mother who lives in a tiny flat in Novocherkassk with her 18-year-old daughter Svetka (Yuliya Burova) and grizzled old dad (Sergei Erlish). Wage cuts and food price rises trigger the strike during which Svetka goes missing. Lyuda a party hardliner mounts a desperate search for her in the aftermath as her utopian Soviet dream is gradually unravelling. Vysotskaya captures both the dreams and disillusionment of her character’s travails – a remarkable performance at the heart of a devastating film. (Subtitles) 2020 Russia Andrey Konchalovskiy 121m

Experience Carmen like never before – recorded live on the floating stage during the Bregenz Festival. As with their previous spectacular productions, you can expect the staging of this classic tale to have an extravagantly original and innovative design, with the waters of the lake being used as an extension of the stage This production of Carmen is directed by Kasper Holten, former Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House in London, with the set designed by the British artist Es Devlin. Her past work includes sets for such stars as Adele, Take That, U2, Pet Shop Boys and Kanye West. 140m inc 15m interval.

When he is confused, so is the audience such as when he suddenly doesn’t recognise his daughter who is played by another actress. There are constant tweaks to the layout and decor of his apartment. Undine
Fri 18 Jun 13:30 Thu 24 Jun 19:45
Christian Petzold updates the Undine myth with vigour and humour. This tale of romance, watery magic and mystery evokes a delightful Hitchcockian sensibility. Undine (Paula Beer), in her mid-20s, works as a freelance guide for the Senate Administration for Urban Development in central Berlin. But before giving her urban history talk, her lover Johannes breaks up with her on the terrace of a café across the street from her work. According to the German myth of Undine she must kill her lover if he is unfaithful. Diver Christoph offers the hope of a new beginning. Petzold teasingly invites us to accept the drama as being situated between realism and fairytale, in a zone of narrative logic akin to dream. Ptzold claims this dreamlike feel stems from ‘Vertigo’ as an inspiration. ‘Simultaneously baffling and completely lucid.’ Little White Lies. Amidst a worldwide pandemic that causes sudden amnesia, middle-aged Aris finds himself enrolled in a recovery programme designed to help unclaimed patients build new identities. The latest patient to be admitted to the “Disturbed Memory Department” is Aris (Aris Servetalis), aka Number 14842. Aris embarks on the ‘New Identity’ programme designed to establish new memories and a new life. Paired up with Anna (Sofia Georgovassili), a fellow amnesiac, Aris duly follows a stumbling route through an accelerated second childhood. This in turn is followed by a whistle-stop adolescence. A natural descendant of the ‘Greek Weird Wave’, ‘This is a movie full of lovely and lilting moments that invite you to reflect on the value of your own painful memories, and yet precious little of it is specific enough in a way that makes it hard to forget.’ (Indiewire). Dream Horse Jan, a cleaner and bartender, decides to breed a racehorse in her Welsh village. As the horse rises through the ranks, Jan and the townspeople are pitted against the racing elite in a race for the national championship.

The film tells the inspiring true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely racehorse bred by small town Welsh bartender, Jan Vokes (Toni Collette) perhaps as a way to add meaning to what she feels is a pretty humdrum life. With very little money and no experience, Jan convinces her neighbours (including Damien Lewis), a group of down-on-their-luck Welsh villagers, to chip in their meagre earnings to help raise Dream in the hopes he can compete with the racing elites. The group’s investment pays off as Dream rises through the ranks with grit and determination and goes on to race in the Welsh Grand National showing the heart of a true champion. Horse lovers will be charmed by the title character’s soulful eyes and knack for coming up big during the story’s most critical moments. You may remember that this real-life tale was previously the subject of the 2015 documentary also screened at New Park - ‘Dark Horse’. UK 2020 Euros Lyn 113m

First Cow Kelly Reichardt returns to the past for a quietly profound tale of two enterprising men, a cow, a crime, and a nation on the verge of change.

Two travellers, on the run from a band of vengeful hunters in the 1820s Northwest America, dream of striking it rich - but their tenuous plan to make their fortune on the frontier comes to rely on the secret use of a landowner’s prized dairy cow. The buttermilk scones they make prove a lucrative success but keeping their secret and knowing when to cut and run prove tricky. This is a finely observed account of male friendship. Tense and immediate, Reichardt’s filmmaking is always immaculate and shot with beautiful simplicity. Her tale of two dreamers risking it all at the frontier is pure cinematic perfection, featuring great performances from its leading actors, with a strong supporting cast and gorgeous cinematography. A Western that is not to be missed. 2019 USA Kelly Reichardt 122m
We are extremely proud to announce that Chichester Cinema at New Park has partnered with The Sussex Snowdrop Trust, to give local children a special surprise on their birthdays with a ‘Cinema in a Box’. We launched the ‘Cinema in a Box’ initiative late last year, when we gifted the joy of film to care home residents in Chichester. The charity is now helping support younger audiences, including those directly linked to The Sussex Snowdrop Trust, with a gift of Netflix and JustEat vouchers, Montezuma’s chocolates, popcorn, and a family cinema ticket to New Park, all presented in a beautiful gift box. Di Levantine, Co-Founder and Chairman of The Sussex Snowdrop Trust, commented: “Going to the cinema is a real treat for any family. We are thrilled with this collaboration that will allow our Snowdrop families to enjoy a ‘Cinema in a Box’ at home together to celebrate their child’s birthday. Uncle Vanya
Following its critically acclaimed opening in London in 2020, Sonia Friedman Productions’ stunning 5-star production, a new adaptation of the Anton Chekhov masterpiece by Conor McPherson, directed by Ian Rickson, was abruptly halted as the world went into lockdown. Vanya’s exquisite ensemble overcame the considerable challenges of working in a global pandemic, returning to the Harold Pinter Theatre to film the ‘perfect’ production. Marrying the intimacy of the screen with the electricity of live performance in an exciting new hybrid of film and theatre, this production is far more than simply a capture of the play. Full of tumultuous frustration and hidden passions, but brimming with hope and optimism for the future, ‘Uncle Vanya’ is a must-see event for our times. Sonya (Aimee Lou Wood) and her Uncle Vanya (Toby Jones) while away their time on an isolated estate, visited occasionally only by the local doctor Astrov (Richard Armitage). However, when Sonya’s father Professor Serebryakov (Roger Allam) suddenly returns with his restless, alluring, new wife Yelena (Rosalind Eleazar), polite facades crumble and long repressed feelings start to emerge. As the conflicted family are forced to confront their despair, loneliness and each other, can the beauty of life help them find new hope? 155m - inc short interval
Rare Beasts
Sat 26 Jun 19:45 Tue 29 Jun 13:30
In her unexpectedly ambitious directorial debut Rare Beasts, Billie Piper stars as the career-driven and fatigued but fiery Mandy, a single mother to a demanding son who falls in love with the charming, traditionalist Pete. Piper has come a long way since escorting Dr Who around the universe. She is on fire as Mandy who is flawed but sympathetic and brilliantly funny. On a date with colleague Pete (Leo Bill), he asserts that they will be married in a year and Mandy ends the night vomiting in the street - patriarchy and visual humour are constant themes. The pair begin a relationship that toggles frantically between frustration and short bursts of joy. The taut screenplay (with echoes of Fleabag) is carried by lightning-quick, knotty exchanges, and there’s a heightened, jarring quality to the cinematography. 2019 UK Billie Piper 87m

In 1917, in the Portuguese town of Fátima, three small children were visited by an apparition of the Virgin Mary. Beset by mass pilgrimage, tensions in the town rise as their families try to come to terms with what their children witnessed. The bulk of this beautiful, moving and nuanced faith-based film from director Marco Pontecorvo is set in and around Fatima, Portugal, with Stephanie Gil turning in fine work as 10-year-old Lucia, who, with her younger cousins, is visited by the Virgin Mary. Mary tells Lucia she must pray to help bring about the end of the war. Lucia’s claims are met with doubt. The well-meaning parish priest, is convinced the children are lying and calls on the church hierarchy disavow these dangerous lies. Pontecorvo has a gift for visual spectacle. A woman discovers a shocking secret after the unexpected death of her husband in this moving drama from a first-time director to watch.
The White Cliffs of Dover, an enduring symbol of British nationalism, take on a different meaning here. For Mary Hussein (Joanna Scanlan), their crumbling chalk façade represents her identity and sense of self, eroding away and growing ever distant. Mary is a British Muslim convert who is happily married to Ahmed (Nasser Memarzia), and fully integrated into his culture. When Ahmed dies suddenly Mary is devastated. She soon discovers that he had a secret family just across the Channel. Unable to go on without fully knowing the truth about the man she adored, she travels to Calais leaving the collapsing cliffs in her wake. Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Scanlan, this is an accomplished debut from writer and d irector Aleem Khan which employs elegant, mirrored scenes and repetition to explore the threads that link the two women. Sam (Firth) and Tusker (Tucci) have been together for decades and now they’re taking a jolly trip to the lakes in a campervan. But both men are keeping secrets from one another. Tusker’s memory loss and confusion are worsening but will he let Sam protect him or will Tusker even allow him to try? The fierce colours of the countryside are nurtured by Dick Pope’s cinematography while Firth and Tucci’s chemistry is straight out of the laboratory. Their performances are pitch perfect, while the warmth and humour that spill from this wonderful film is as heartfelt as the streak of sorrow that runs through its centre. In the end, the film isn’t about raging against the dying of the light - like a supernova, what little light is left arrives long after a terminal diagnosis – but about turning resignation into acceptance. This is an intimate movie from actor-turned-film-maker Harry Macqueen, whose 2014 debut, ‘Hinterland’, was also a two-hander about love. UK 2020 Harry Macqueen 93m

Have you seen ‘1917’? Did it remind you of the versatility of the director and did it make you think back to other famous films he directed? Of course we are talking of Sam Mendes and we are offering you a chance to attend a talk giving you a close up and personal look at the fascinating director. Sam Mendes exerts his influence on stage – think ‘Cabaret’, ‘Gypsy’ – but for Sir Samuel Mendes CBE, named in the Telegraph as one of the most powerful people in British culture, probably his greatest achievements are in film. He made his auspicious feature film debut with ‘American Beauty’, a dark satirical and ultimately revelatory vision of suburban discontent – a theme to be echoed later in his film ‘Revolutionary Road’ with Leonardo de Caprio and Kate Winslet, Sam’s then wife. But he was not one to stick to the tried and tested as evidenced by ‘Road to Perdition’, ‘Jarhead’, and the Bond films – ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Spectre.’ With an Academy Award and two BAFTA best director awards, Sam definitely deserves a closer look. In this talk, we will look at of some of his best and lesser known films, with, of course, lots of clips. Please join Rosemary Coxon, the Cinema’s Education Officer, for a fascinating ride through Mendes’ Movies. 135m Look out for Sam Mendes’ film ‘1917’ which screens at New Park on Sun 13 Jun 16:45 & Wed 16 Jun 13:30. Have you thought about volunteering at the cinema? We have a thriving group of volunteers who perform ushering duties for each performance. Our ushers give half an hour of their time before the film to assist ticketholders entering the auditorium. In exchange they get to watch the film for free! Volunteers choose which films they would like to usher, and they can do as many or as few as they like. Ushering is sociable and enjoyable and also a vital part of the cinema’s operation. How We Have Prepared for Your Return CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK UNDER COVID-19 GUIDELINES We are so happy to have our treasured audience back at New Park. Together with the New Park Centre, we have combined the guidelines from both the National Cinema and Community Centre Associations who have both worked with the Government to arrive at the safest conditions that allow us to go on screen.
Film bookings must be made in advance online or over the phone. No cash sales. Face coverings to be used at all times in the Centre, including the Auditorium. Please keep 2 metres apart and follow the one-way signage around the Centre. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the New Park Centre.
The Auditorium has been laid out to observe the national ‘1-metre plus mitigation’ rule. We have reduced the screening numbers to allow more time in between films. Extra Covid-19 specific cleaning will take place in between every screening. Screens have been installed to protect our patrons, volunteers and staff. Staff and volunteers have been given extra Covid-19 specific training.
Please take note of these extra guidelines: - Entrance into the building will be only via the Box Office foyer door. - The Box Office will only be open for face-to-face transactions from 15:00 to 16:00 seven days a week. Please note that the Box Office will not be open at the start of each film. Tickets must be purchased in advance. - Doors to the New Park Centre will open 15 minutes before each screening. - Patrons will be guided directly into the auditorium. - Refreshments will be available, but there will be no chairs or tables in the foyer or bar. - All screenings will have approximately 10 minutes of trailers (there will be no ads). - Once films start, there will be no latecomers allowed into the building. - We ask all patrons to practice social distancing when leaving the auditorium. - Exit will be only through the southern (Picture Palace) side of the building. - Toilets will be accessible on a ‘one in, one out’ arrangement. - Please note that visors on their own are not considered acceptable face coverings. - Please call Box Office before booking if you cannot wear a mask for medical reasons. We thank you for your understanding and patience. 01243 786650
