welcome to

Chichester Cinema This year marks 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare, and to help commemorate his great contribution to our culture, we present a year of Films, Talks and Special Events. This season alone we give you a Live Special from Stratford‑Upon-Avon hosted by David Tennant (‘Shakespeare Live!’), a series of talks (‘Shakespeare 400’), ‘Richard III’ which includes a new Documentary plus Q&A with Ian McKellen and Richard Loncraine (Director), Zeffirelli’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and a Live Opera from Barcelona (‘I Capuletti e I Montecchi’). Also this season, we bring back some of the big Award Winners (‘Bridge of Spies’, ‘Spotlight’, ‘The Revenant’, ‘The Danish Girl’ ‘and ‘Room’) to sit alongside one of the most diverse range of European and World Cinema that we have ever offered. Look out for the Palme D’Or Winner ‘Dheepan’ (France), Foreign Language Oscar Winner ‘Son of Saul’ (Hungary), plus other gems such as ‘The Brand New Testament’ (Belgium), multi award nominated ‘Mustang’ (Turkey/France), ‘Our Little Sister (Japan), ‘Suburra’ (Italy) and ‘The Pearl Button’ (Chile). Preparations are well on the way for our 25th Film Festival this Summer, and it looks as though it will be the best one yet, with many Previews, Premieres and Special Events. If you would like to become a Festival Patron and sponsor a film, contact me on walter@chichestercinema.org to register your interest. See you at the Cinema

Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict A feature documentary about the life of art icon Peggy Guggenheim, based on her sole authorized biography. Peggy was an heiress to the Guggenheim family who would become a central figure in the modern art movement. As she moved through the cultural upheaval of the 20th century, she collected not only art, but artists. Her colourful personal history included trysts, affairs and marriages with such figures as Samuel Beckett and Jackson Pollock. The film is a compendium of the greatest 20th century art mixed with the wild and iconoclastic life of one of the most powerful women in the history of the art world. Best of Enemies A behind-the-scenes account of the explosive debates between the liberal Gore Vidal and the conservative William F. Buckley Jr, during the 1968 Democratic and Republican conventions. Live and unscripted, they kept viewers riveted with their rancorous disagreements about politics, God and sex. They bring the best and the worst of both sides in this documentary, as these two men discussed their views, threw cryptic insults at one another and almost came to blows, making a fascinating comparison with the recent Trump “debates”. The whole thing is brilliantly structured, wonderfully cut together, incredibly funny, and far-reaching in its ambition. USA 2015 Robert Gordon & Morgan Neville 88m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Palio

Tue 5 Apr 19:00 (Pic. Palace) Wed 6 Apr 17:15 (Studio)

Twice a year the Italian city of Siena goes crazy for the oldest horse race in the world: the Palio. Not your average race: strategy, bribery and corruption play as much a part as the skill of the riders. Horses are allocated by lot four days prior to the race. This is when the madness truly begins. The contenders’ passionate and dramatic battle is an epic and cinematic tale of Italian life in microcosm. UK/Italy 2015 Cosima Spender 90m

Summer 1915, French Riviera: Jean Renoir – son of the Impressionist painter, Pierre‑Auguste – returns home to convalesce after being wounded in WW1. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Michel Bouquet) is tormented by the loss of his wife, arthritis and the terrible news that his son Jean (Vincent Rottiers) has been wounded in action. But when a young girl (Christa Theretwill) miraculously enters his world, the old painter is filled with a new, wholly unexpected energy. A sensory delight! El Artista y Su Modelo Elderly sculptor Marc (Jean Rochefort) lives with his wife Lea in the south of France, safe from the War that rages in the distance. He may have reached the end of his life and of his art, but when he finds a new muse in the form of a young Spanish refugee (Aida Folch) he undertakes the last (and certainly the most important) work of his life. This is one of the best films made on the theme of artists at work. (Subtitles) France/Spain 2012 Fernando Trueba 105m

The Lobster

Booking Ref

A satire on the subject of our universal obsession with relationships, and our conviction that ‘couplehood’ is the supreme expression of human happiness. In a dystopian future, or strange alternative present, adults who are single (either through failure to find a partner or bereavement), must check into a hotel with other singles and find a genuinely compatible partner within 45 days, or they are transformed into an animal of their choice and released into the forest. But they can gain extra time for this “search” period with hunting trips into the forest to bring down rebellious singles who have escaped into the wild there, living as singleton outlaws. Lanthimos premiered this macabre adventure in black-comic absurdism at Cannes - his first English-language feature. Lanthimos (‘Dogtooth’) premiered this adventure in black-comic absurdism at Cannes 2015. Ireland/UK/Greece 2015 Yorgos Lanthimos 118m

Dogtooth Yorgos Lanthimos’ (‘The Lobster’) arrived on our radars in 2009 with this unique Cannes Winner and Oscar nominated film. Three teenagers live isolated, without leaving their house, because their over-protective parents say they can only leave when their dogtooth falls out. The brilliance here is that, without any clues to the family’s past, you easily understand what has been happening. Lanthimos skilfully doles out tantalizing pieces of information, keeping the viewer in a constant state of suspense and wonder (in 2009 he won the Prix Un Certain Regard recognizing emerging talent and daring work). We are presented with a uniquely unsettling scenario open to interpretation, and the film will stick around long after you are released from its grip. A playful and captivating hybrid of Bergman’s ‘Persona’ and Mankiewicz’s ‘All About Eve’ with three wondrous female lead performances. An actress (Juliette Binoche) is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years earlier, but this time, as the older character Helena. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloë Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror. Also stars Kristen Stewart. Thu 7 Apr 17:30 (Pic. Palace) Fri 8 Apr 19:15 (Studio)

Ex-Parisian hipster Martin is passionate about Gustave Flaubert and has re-settled into a village as a baker. This clever contemporary reinvention of ‘Madame Bovary’, Flaubert’s literary masterpiece sees erudite baker Martin (the wonderful Fabrice Luchini) observing the arrival of a London couple in his Normandy town. He immediately becomes infatuated with the vivacious young Gemma (Gemma Arteton). Finely balanced between comedy and drama this is a real French charmer. (Subtitles) France 2014 Anne Fontaine 99m

From the bejewel led Easter eggs of the Romanov Tsarinas to the 1970s allure of ‘Brut by Fabergé’ aftershave, and from the Russian revolution to today’s high-fashion glitz in New York and London, the film explores a multi-faceted world that began with one man: the prodigiously talented Peter Carl Fabergé, Court Jeweller of St Petersburg. Marguerite Based on a true story of the American singer Florence Foster Jenkins, this French film adapts her story to 1920s France, and illustrates the absurdity of delusion. Marguerite Dumont (Catherine Frot) has a whole entourage of people allowing her to believe she is a great singer. Her husband Georges (Andre Marcon) is just being nice, but her butler Madelbos (Denis Mpunga) has an agenda. He takes photographs of Marguerite and thinks they will be valuable once she is famous, or infamous. They send a roomful of flowers from “admirers,” shelter her from any negative reviews, and hire “experts” to keep the ruse going, including a bearded lady reading her tarot predicting success… the deception gets bigger and bigger. Like any good underdog story, ‘Marguerite’ has a training montage. It is a bittersweet comedy that borders on tragic, because ultimately the enablers are doing more harm than good, and any short term “good” is at her expense. We will also screen the American version of this film (‘Florence Foster Jenkins’) starring Meryl Streep later in the season (see pg39). Tom Hooper (‘King’s Speech’, Les Miserables’) brings us the remarkable love story inspired by the lives of artists Einar/Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Einar (Eddie Redmayne) is a successful painter in 1920’s Copenhagen who is happily married to fellow artist, Gerda (2016 Oscar Winner Alicia Vikander). At this time, Einar is beginning to explore gender identity and with Gerda’s help, he creates a new character, Lili. At first, he simply wears dresses but gradually Lili takes over Einar’s personality. She is the one Einar wants to be. Einar is played with extraordinary sensitivity and dignity by Eddie Redmayne, who may well be in the running for another Oscar. He is a quiet and seemingly passive character, but one who notices and feels everything. Vikander is excellent as this devoted and fiery wife whose husband is disappearing in front of her, metamorphosing into a new personality. UK/Ger/USA 2015 Tom Hooper 120m

Tim Roth gives possibly the performance of his career in this transgressive and candid film, playing a home care nurse who confronts our mortality head on. Caregiver, David (Roth) works with the terminally ill. Meticulous, effective and passionate about his job, he builds relationships that go beyond the medical setting and creates true intimacy with his patients. In his private life, David is inefficient, awkward and reserved. He needs his patients as much as they need him. Franco’s script and Roth’s ineffably restrained performance show great skill in blurring David’s boundaries between morbid fixation and selfless immersion in his work, providing comfort that immediate family often cannot. This sad, deeply intelligent film, was the winner of the Best Screenplay at 2015’s Cannes Film Festival. Mexico/France 2016 Michel Franco 93m

Giselle This is the quintessential Romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and continues beyond the grave. The ballet’s title role also offers one of the great challenges of the ballet repertory, as Giselle transforms from an innocent peasant girl, duped into love, to a forgiving spirit who saves her lover from death. For the ballerina this is a role of two contrasting halves: in Act I she must appear naïve and artless, her dancing alive with an earthy enthusiasm; in Act II she transforms into light and air, her dancing so ethereal as to seem weightless. Richard Gere stars as an elderly man forced out on the streets of New York City. Oren Moverman’s drama stars Gere as George, a homeless man who has been unable to hold a job for years, and has just been kicked out of his apartment. He drifts through the city looking for food, alcohol, and shelter, before seeking refuge at a Manhattan intake centre for homeless men, where his friendship with a fellow client helps him try to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter. The movie was a passion project for Gere, who has had a rough time in Hollywood since aging out of the silver-haired-romance parts; here, he delivers a subdued, resolutely unglamorous performance. Growing up poor in India, Ramanujan earns admittance to Cambridge University during WWI, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G.H. Hardy. Written and directed by Matthew Brown, this is the true story of friendship that forever changed mathematics. In 1913, Ramanujan (Dev Patel), a self-taught Indian mathematics genius travelled to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he forged a bond with his mentor, the eccentric professor Hardy (Jeremy Irons), and fought against prejudice to reveal his mathematic genius to the world. In his meatiest role since he burst on the scene in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, Patel expresses Ramanujan’s nobility of soul; it would make him stand out from the other students even without his great gift. Irons also rises to the role. Not quite an absent-minded professor, he portrays Hardy as a loyal and upright eccentric, whose defences break down before the plight of the unfortunate genius he has come to love. Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures An examination of the life and work of the revered and controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Twenty-seven years ago, when Senator Jesse Helms took to the floor of the US Congress to denounce an exhibition of photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, the dividing line in the culture war was clear. Those on the right found Mapplethorpe’s transgressive, S&M-flavoured imagery to be obscene. Those on the left viewed it to be the cutting edge of free expression: a valid form of art. The documentary, while it makes the case for Mapplethorpe as a fearless and important artist, never denies that a number of his photographs were scandalous, shocking, and illicit, with elements of pornography. In fact, one of Mapplethorpe’s central inspirations was to turn obscenity into art. Please note, this documentary contains graphic sexual images. USA 2016 Fenton Bailey/Randy Barbato 108m

The Pearl Button El Botón de Nácar From the maker of ‘Nostalgia for the Light’ comes this wondrous exploration of the Chilean people and their connection to the water. With a backdrop of the vast, stunning expanse of the Chilean Patagonia – a supernatural landscape of volcanoes, mountains and glaciers; its 2,670 mile coastline is the largest archipelago in the world – ‘The Pearl Button’ goes back over 3,000 years to delve into the history of the Kawéskars, the indigenous people who once paddled its waters. The film recovers and reclaims Chile’s forgotten people, and retells their remarkable, individual stories and folklore. Beautiful, haunting and tinged with melancholy, Patricio Guzmán’s captivating documentary follows his highly acclaimed award-winning ‘Nostalgia for the Light’. Ben Wheatley’s (‘Sightseers’, ‘A Field in England’) new film about a young doctor, who joins a community in a luxury building who exile themselves and gradually divide into violent tribes. Tom Hiddleston is in top form as Dr. Robert Laing, the golden-boy who skirts the social scene of both the working class and the upper crust in their shared tower block in Thatcher’s England. Laing tries to keep his head down when the groups begin taking out their frustrations on each other with increasing violence, but he can only maintain his sanity for so long. This is a class warfare allegory with a 70’s chic aesthetic, simultaneously a period piece and heightened variation of our present - or more accurately - future. This smart adaptation of J.G. Ballard‘s 1975 novel, is dense, wild, hilarious and a feast for eyes and ears. UK 2016 Ben Wheatley 119m

Couple in a Hole

Booking Ref

A middle-aged couple forgoes the comforts of civilization to live isolated inside a cave in the woods, but become involved with a mysterious local farmer. Scottish couple John (Paul Higgins) and Karen (Kate Dickie) live in a hole in the middle of the beautiful French Pyrenees. Their lifestyle is devoid of modernity and they need no one else to survive, but when Karen suffers a spider bite, John is forced to find help from a farmer at the nearby village. This small gesture opens up a dialogue and starts to reveal the reason why John and Karen are living in this bizarre manner. The lead couple’s convincing interplay and heart-breaking steeliness work together to deliver a deeply felt portrait of a couple dealing with sadness. Director Geens is carefully restrained, refusing to stuff flashy surrealism or nightmarish flourishes in his film, realising that the sounds of nature can be terrifying enough. This is a left-field, occasionally hilarious thriller. UK 2015 Tom Geens 105m

Victoria A movie shot in a single take about Victoria, a runaway party girl, who’s asked by three friendly men to join them as they hit the town. Victoria (Laia Costa) is a young woman from Madrid who meets a fun-loving quartet of men at an underground German nightclub in the wee hours. They are “real Berliners,” they tell her. What they are not are daylight bank robbers, but that is what they are pressured into being, with the collegial Victoria deciding to help her newfound friends at dawn. With no cutaways, the film’s story and the momentum of the unlikely robbers seems as unstoppable as the camera. The characters are confused, adrenalized and breathless, as are you. The Brand New Testament Le Tout Nouveau Testament When Ea gets fed up with her overbearing father (who happens to be God), she decides to leave the house, gather her own apostles, and write her own testament. So, God exists. He (Benoit Poelvoorde) lives in Brussels in a cramped, tatty apartment, and behaves like a petty tyrant toward his wife… who we later learn – is a Goddess. With apple-cheeked but deadpan precociousness, Ea (delightful newcomer Pili Groyne) leaves home and begins by recounting the Genesis story, but from this uniquely skewed, Belgian-centric perspective. She also decides to find six extra disciples (including Catherine Deneuve) which in her mind will shift the balance of power to her mother – which can only be better for all creation. Not as heretic as it sounds, this is a whimsical, mischievous treat. (Subtitles) Belgium/France 2015 Jaco Van Dormael 113m

A New England Folktale Mesmerizing camera work and a powerful musical score, combine in this chilling and ground-breaking new take on the genre. New England, 1630. Upon threat of banishment by the church, an English farmer leaves his colonial plantation, relocating his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest. Strange and unsettling things begin to happen almost immediately, and with suspicion and paranoia mounting, family members accuse teenage daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) of witchcraft, charges she adamantly denies. As circumstances grow more treacherous, each family member’s faith, loyalty and love become tested. Sparing in its use of special effects, ‘The Witch’ generates suspense and foreboding through what is suggested rather than what is seen. Son of Saul Saul Fia The 2016 Best Film in a Foreign Language Oscar and Golden Globe winner, this is an experience not to be missed. Hungarian filmmaker László Nemes has created what feels like a new cinematic language to tell this hyper-focused story of a Jewish prisoner working for the Nazis (aka a Sonderkommando) called Saul (Géza Röhrig), at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in October 1944. We rarely leave Saul’s point of view, creating the feel of one long tracking shot. Early on, Saul spots a dying boy surrounded by Nazi doctors who he believes to be his son. Finding a Rabbi to arrange a proper burial becomes Saul’s obsession, and perhaps a way to keep his mind from the monstrous daily tasks he is forced to commit by the Nazi soldiers. Very confronting, but anyone with even a passing interest in Holocaust cinema needs to see this extraordinary film. (Subtitles) Hungary 2015 László Nemes 107m

A solid Western has ridden into town, with focus on a woman who lives in a harsh setting – a woman who has enjoyed few, if any, breaks. Forced to defend the family homestead when the vengeful Bishop Boys arrive to settle a score with her badly injured husband (Noah Emmerich), Natalie Portman’s Jane Hammond prepares to confront the enemy, enlisting the paid assistance of her gunslinger ex-beau (the perfectly cast Joel Edgerton). Set in late nineteenth century New Mexico, Portman brings a credible, mournful resolve to her character. The supporting players, including a near unrecognizable Ewan McGregor, moustachioed with darkened hair as the gang’s coldly ruthless leader, are equally effective. Suburra Stefano Sollima (‘Gomorra’) excites viewers again with the story of a gangster who wants to turn Rome’s waterfront into a new Las Vegas. The Suburra, a rough neighbourhood of Rome, is the scene of an ambitious real estate project, but with the state, the Vatican and the mafia involved, things are not what they seem. In 2011, torrential rainfall saw the waters of the Tiber rise to dangerous levels; it was just at this moment that Pope Benedict XV took the unprecedented step of abdicating. ‘Suburra’ takes these two end-of-days omens as the backdrop for the apocalyptic story. There is a new energy in Italian cinema. In the vein of 2008’s ‘Gomorra’, this raw and tasty production feeds from modern Italian television, and in combination with festivalfriendly auteurs like Moretti or Sorrentino, promises a new triumphant era of Italian Cinema. Don Cheadle directs and stars as Miles Davis in an exploration of the legendary jazz musician’s life and music. High on drugs and pining for his lost love, Davis is holed up in his apartment, obsessing over a reel of new music. The suits at the record studio want that tape: they smell money. Meanwhile, a scrappy Rolling Stone journalist (Ewan McGregor, as the fictional Dave Brill) wants the story of the Miles Davis comeback. Cheadle nails the swagger (and the humour in that swagger) and his admiration for the man and his music is evident. ‘Miles Ahead’ is not just about the music. It is about what we all face in our lives; questions about who we really are and how we are ultimately defined. Its intentionally meandering structure and clever use of editing make this one of the few movies in which you eagerly anticipate the next transition. USA 2015 Don Cheadle 100m

The Club El Club Winner of the Silver Bear (Grand Jury Prize) at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival, this intricate, raw film, is beautifully eloquent from the very first shot. In a secluded house in a small seaside town live four unrelated men and the woman who tends to the house and their needs. All former priests, they have been sent to this quiet exile to purge the sins of their pasts, the separation from their communities the worst form of punishment by the Church. What is most laudable about the film is how Larraín manages to allude to the wider structures, behaviour and corruption of the church without ever making this claustrophobic, moody and very local story feel anything but crucial, thrilling and disturbing. Critics have heaped praise on this feature since it’s Berlin premiere. (Subtitles) Chile 2015 Pablo Larraín 138m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

An historical epic in black and white which deals with Romany gypsy poet Bronislawa Wajs (1908 -1987). Known as Papusza, she has become something of a legend in Poland. The narrative moves through several time planes and, while recounting various aspects of her life story, also recreates the patterns of Roma life in the pre-war period. World War II saw the killing of some 35,000 Polish Roma, while the post-war Communist regime forced the remainder to abandon their traditional lifestyle. The film focuses principally on the discovery of Papusza by the ethnographer, Jerzy Fikowski, the first Polish writer to chart Roma history and customs. The black and white photography is sharp and poetic – and occasionally romantic. Five years in the making, this is an inspired and innovative evocation of a reality now past. Romeo and Juliet Franco Zeffirelli’s acclaimed adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless love story is generally acclaimed to be best version committed to film. Zeffirelli places his “star crossed lovers” (Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey) within a world of everyday life, and with the first shots of the film, we are caught up in the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues. We understand the nature of the quarrel between Tybalt (Michael York) and Mercutio (John McEnery) instinctively because Zeffirelli has picked them for their types: cocky insolence vs. sly mockery. Zeffirelli interviewed hundreds of young actors and actresses before choosing the two leads. They are magnificent. The love between them, and the physical passion that comes with it, are of that naive and hopeless intensity only those in love for the very first time can comprehend. The Audience

To help celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday, we present an encore of ‘The Audience’ from the Gielgud Theatre, with Helen Mirren as Her Majesty. Peter Morgan’s play shows a series of the Queen’s weekly meetings with various prime ministers to have held office during her reign, including Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron. For sixty years she has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace - a meeting like no other in British public life - it is private. ‘The Audience’ breaks this contract of silence - and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional - sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. Directed by Stephen Daldry (‘Billy Elliot’, ‘The Hours’). 180m including interval.

Imagining Paradise

Hollywood has always understood the fascination of conjuring up fantasy worlds. With Star Wars back on the agenda, this short oneday course asks, why is Hollywood preoccupied with imagining the world as a different place? In the 1940s, a period which would culminate in the UnAmerican Activities investigations, Hollywood explored alternative worlds where American values could be recaptured. More recently, Hollywood has returned to the fantasy genre, with films which explore life beyond the everyday. But, just like the 1940s, the use of fantasy explores the emptiness of contemporary life, and offers us a meditation on the destiny of America in a changing world. Nick Smedley is a film historian specialising in Hollywood cinema’s underlying cultural values since 1930. There will be lots of scope for discussion and Q&A. BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Kipling and Film

Booking Ref

In his lifetime Rudyard Kipling, who died eighty years ago, was one of the most celebrated, respected, and widely-read writers of both prose and poetry. But not everyone registered how much respect he had for the new popular medium of film. Still in his thirties when film shows first became available to the public, he immediately recognized their power. Film-makers returned the compliment, starting with Pathe, who commissioned him to write screenplays for silent movies. In the years since his death film versions of his stories have multiplied. The latest, a new Disney version of ‘The Jungle Book’, screens in June. Mary Hamer, international lecturer, researcher, and broadcaster, author of prizewinning ‘Kipling & Trix’, takes a close look at Kipling’s enthusiasm for film and at the way cinema has used his work. Fresh back from Shimla, she has tales to tell.
