Ten fishermen from Cornwall are signed by Universal Records and achieve a top ten hit with their debut album of Sea Shanties. Nine years ago, a group of Cornish fishermen were singing sea shanties in their village pub when a holidaying music executive (played here by Danny Mays) came in for a pint. The result was a million-pound record deal, chart-topping success, a performance at the Glastonbury Festival, and this feel-good film about their lives. Starring James Purefoy (High-Rise), Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game) Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake) and Christian Brassington (Poldark), the film was filmed in small and picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac on Cornwall’s north coast, adding a rugged beauty to the background. Old school magic meets the modern world in this epic adventure, which has the charm of those 1980’s adventure flicks such as ‘The Goonies’ and ‘The Never Ending Story’. Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he’s just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Patrick Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson). With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be. Joe Cornish has pulled off a fantastic feat – a children’s fantasy adventure that balances the drama, action, and humour perfectly and will keep an audience of any age entertained through its entire runtime. UK 2019 Joe Cornish 120m.

In this school-set re-working of ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’, an awkward but imaginative pupil helps the handsome but spectacularly dim school-hero pursue the fiery daughter of a visiting French teacher. Set in an ultra-posh boys’ boarding school in the 1980’s, where masculinity is at once fragile and boorishly vocal, this charming film blends nostalgia with a strain of farce and class satire. As the film’s pipsqueak Cyrano, the ubiquitous Alex Lawther is a highlight, though Jonah Hauer-King, endearingly hilarious as his beefy marionette, is the film’s greatest revelation. Director Toby MacDonald shows an inventive visual imagination, particularly in the artistic items that Agnes (Pauline Etienne) and Amberson (Lawther) send each other – several of which wouldn’t be out of place in a Michel Gondry film. UK 2018 Toby MacDonald 96m.

This action thriller infused with irreverent humour, stars Liam Neeson as Nels Coxman, a family man whose quiet life with his wife (Laura Dern) is upended following the mysterious death of their son. Nels’ search for justice turns into a vengeful hunt for Viking (Tom Bateman), a drug lord he believes is connected to the death. As one by one of Viking’s associates “disappear,” Nels goes from upstanding citizen to ice-cold vigilante. Adapted from his own 2014 film, ‘In Order of Disappearance’ (which starred Stellan Skarsgaard in the Neeson role), Director Moland has a strong current of dark humour winding through the proceedings. With a nod or two to Quentin Tarantino, he has fashioned a bizarrely entertaining ode to violence, gangsters, and heavy snowfall in the Rockies. UK/Norway 2019 Hans Petter Moland 119m.

Rembrandt

Every Rembrandt exhibition is eagerly anticipated, but this major show hosted by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum is an event like no other. Given exclusive, privileged access to both galleries, the film documents this landmark exhibition whilst interweaving Rembrandt’s life story with the behind-the-scenes preparations at these world-famous institutions. The exhibition focuses on the highlights from the final years of Rembrandt’s life, commonly thought to be his finest years. The masterpieces he produced during this period could be called his defining works, with each piece so soulful and honest that they helped sculpt our idea of Rembrandt as a man and as an artist. For many, Rembrandt is the greatest artist that ever lived and this film seeks to explore the truth about the man behind the legend. UK 2014 Phil Grabsky 90m.

1992: First Chichester Film Festival As part of the July Chichester Festivities, I founded our first fully fledged film festival for Chichester, with over 50 screenings including 12 new European films as part of the ironically “into Europe” theme of the Festivities. We have selected the previewed 1991 French masterpiece ‘Van Gogh’ to mark this new initiative. From the following year we moved into August as a stand-alone Film Festival for the next 27 years. – Roger Gibson. One of the greatest films by one of the finest directors of the second half of the 20th century, Maurice Pialat’s ‘Van Gogh’ represents an ambitious and crowning achievement in its portrayal of the master painter’s final weeks of life. Van Gogh, depicted by the remarkable actor/songwriter-singer Jacques Dutronc (Godard’s ‘Sauve qui peut (la vie)’), has arrived at Auvers-sur-Oise to come under the care of Dr. Gachet (Gérard Séty) for his nervous agitation. Soon after the arrival of Vincent’s brother Théo (Bernard Le Coq) and his wife, plein air portraiture and conviviality give way to the more crepuscular moods of brothels and cabarets, and the painter’s anguished existence, tossing between money worries and an impassioned relationship with the doctor’s teenage daughter, finally meets its terminal scene. Although other films have also covered this subject well, Pialat’s masterpiece towers over them all, and received high praise from Jean-Luc Go. France 1991 Maurice Pialat 158m. Arrow Distributors have kindly let us screen the film without admission charges. There will be a collection for local charity Stonepillow at the end of the film.

All About Eve

A new stage adaptation of the classic 1950 film opens in the West End’s Noel Coward Theatre starring Gillian Armstrong and Lily James and transmitting live in Cinemas. The legendary 1950 Bette Davis film has been adapted by Ivo Van Hove, who also directs the production. ‘All About Eve’ tells the story of Margo Channing. Legend. True star of the theatre. The spotlight is hers, always has been. But now there’s Eve. Her biggest fan. Young, beautiful Eve. The golden girl, the girl next door. But you know all about Eve…don’t you…? Lifting the curtain on a world of jealousy and ambition, this new production, from one of the world’s most innovative theatre directors asks why our fascination with celebrity, youth and identity never seems to get old. It has been designed by Jan Versweyveld, with new music from PJ Harvey. 130m approx inc interval.

All About Eve (1950)

Booking Ref

To complement the NT Live performance of ‘All About Eve’ from the West End, we bring you a rare opportunity to see the 1950 Bette Davis classic on the big screen. This is an elegantly bitchy backstage story revolving around aspiring actress Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). Tattered and forlorn, Eve shows up in the dressing room of Broadway mega-star Margo Channing (Bette Davis), weaving a melancholy life story. Taking pity on the girl, Margo takes Eve as her personal assistant. Before long, it becomes apparent that naïve Eve is a Machiavellian conniver who cold-bloodedly uses everyone around her to rise to the top of the theatrical heap. This is not only a brilliant and clever portrait of an actress, it is a downright funny film, from its opening scene to the final fadeout. Look out for the Marilyn Monroe cameo. USA 1950 Joseph L. Mankiewicz 138m.

Willem Dafoe plays Vincent Van Gogh in this expressive biopic, concentrated on the Dutch painter’s later years in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, France, shortly before his death at age 37. Director Julian Schnabel, a painter himself, rightly focuses on Van Gogh’s most prolific period, in which the artist churned out more than 200 paintings in 15 months, with minimal dialogue and striking visual poetry. This was the period where the artist moved from the grey modernity of Paris to the rainbow rusticity of Arles in southern France, where he produced many of his most famous works, among them ‘Sunflowers’ and ‘Starry Night Over the Rhone’. Other influential characters - Van Gogh’s loving brother and benefactor, Theo (Rupert Friend) and his demonstrative peer, the French painter Paul Gauguin (Oscar Isaac) - drift into the film, reminding the painter to soak up the vivid, quotidian ephemera of his surroundings when he is, for the most part, living in solitude. Dafoe fully commits to his performance, as does Schnabel to the painter’s vision and humanity. This is a journey inside the world and mind of a person who, despite skepticism, ridicule and illness, created some of the world’s most beloved and stunning works of art. Switzerland 2018 Julian Schnabel 111m.

This irresistible and irrepressible sequel has that same quality as its predecessor: it seems to be aimed at children, but adults will be delighted at the pop culture references hidden just below the surface. But does she have what it takes to get her family off the ropes and emerge victorious? Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

This devastating opera, originally banned by Stalin during the Soviet era, is presented in a rare live performance in UK cinemas from Paris Opera. Of Shostakovich’s initial undertaking – a trilogy on the tragic destinies of Russian women through the ages – only one opera was ever written: the hard-hitting ‘Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk’. Although one of the mainsprings of the work, the Shakespearean parallel is here bitterly ironic: unlike Lady Macbeth, Katerina Ismaïlova who, in the remote reaches of rural 19th century Russia, falls in love with one of her husband’s employees and is finally forced to commit suicide, is less a manipulator than a victim of a violent and patriarchal society. Conductor: Ingo Metzmacher. Cast includes Dmitry Ulyanov, John Dasza, Aušrinė Stundytė. Girl

The emotional story of a 15-year-old girl who is transitioning from being a boy and wants to become a ballerina. 15-year-old Lara (Victor Polster) has just enrolled in a prestigious ballet school, an environment where everything that’s challenging about being a teenager is magnified: your body; the in-crowd; selfdoubt; family members who don’t understand you. What magnifies these insecurities further is that Lara is a transitioning transgender girl, counting the days until she can have gender reassignment surgery, so she is even more self-conscious about her physique than her classmates are. This tender debut drama from Belgian director and co-writer Lukas Dhont is one of the most agonisingly wellobserved films about being an adolescent. Most of the film’s scenes are so naturalistic they could have been lifted from a fly-on-the-wall documentary. (Subtitles) Belgium/Netherlands 2018 Lukas Dhont 109m.

The mesmerising Charlotte Rampling brings an intelligent intensity to the role of a woman whose ageing husband has been jailed. This is the intimate portrait of a woman’s loss of identity as she teeters between denial and reality. Left alone grappling with the consequences of her husband’s (André Wilms) imprisonment, Hannah (Rampling) begins to unravel. Ostracised by family members, neighbours hurl abuse through her door, even her gym membership, bizarrely, is suddenly revoked. Through the exploration of her fractured sense of identity and loss of selfcontrol, the film investigates modern day alienation, the struggle to connect, and the dividing lines between individual identity, personal relationships, and societal pressures. Happy as Lazzaro

Lazzaro Felice This enchanting, surprising Italian fable from the gifted Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher, was the winner of Best Screenplay at Cannes 2018. Lazzaro (Adriano Tardiolo) is a naive and optimistic twenty-year-old farmer. On the other hand, Tancredi (Tommaso Ragno) is a young man with a fervid imagination. Between the two an unexpected friendship is born, one that for Lazzaro, turns out to be an important moment of growth. The first half of the film takes place on the ironically named Inviolata, a large, isolated tobacco farm owned by the wealthy Marquise de Luna (Nicoletta Braschi), before moving to a city of paved streets and modern buildings. Them Paolo Sorrentino’s much-anticipated treatment of Silvio Berlusconi is a sharply written look at the politician and the people attracted to his power. Naturally Berlusconi is inhabited by Sorrentino’s muse Toni Servillo, the shapeshifting star who once again transforms himself not simply with the help of prostheses and hair dye, but through his exceptional physicality. This film aims to peer not just into Berlusconi’s monomaniacal soul, but to expose, as with Sorrentino’s ‘The Great Beauty’, the apotheosis of vulgarity and craving for attention that’s been the canny politician and media magnate’s lasting imprint on Italian society. This kaleidoscopic consideration of the four-time Prime Minister and the Italy he fostered, is a subtly written, stylistically classical look at one of the most divisive European leaders in recent memory. Poulenc’s genius with the setting of text is apparent throughout the opera, much of which consists of recitative that closely follows speech patterns. The most arresting combination of the internal, spiritual, and dramatic musical worlds occurs in the celebrated finale: the fervent prayer of the Salve Regina is sung over a repeating figure in the orchestra, as each of the nuns meets her execution and their voices are silenced one by one. Opera in 2 acts sung in French with English Subtitles. 209m inc Interval. Subtitled screening

The formative years of the orphaned author, J.R.R. Tolkien (Nicholas Hoult) as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of WW1, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. His schoolmates who became close friends with the author in college and even fought alongside him during the first world war. These experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels. During his time in combat (including Battle of the Somme which is impressively staged), Tolkien encounters dark and mythical visions that he experiences upon falling sick - visions that ultimately help inspire the writer to create Sauron, Mordor, and other aspects of Middle-earth. The film explores deeper aspects, including his interest in language inspired by his meeting with a professor, nicely played by Derek Jacobi. The Finnish director Dome Karukoski sensitively brings all the elements together, and Nicholas Hoult is an outstanding rising star. USA 2019 Dome Karukoski 113m.

Donbass

Director Sergey Loznitsa gives us a series of 13 loosely connected snapshots set in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine. In eastern Ukraine, a hybrid war blends open armed conflict, crimes and looting perpetrated by separatist gangs. In Donbass, war is called peace, propaganda is erected in truth and hate claims to be love. A journey through the Donbass is a series of crazy adventures in which the grotesque and the tragic mingle like life and death. This is not a tale about a region, a country or a political system but about a world lost in the after-truth and false identities. In this film’s own absurdist way, it sheds some light on just what the war did to the lives – and sensibilities – of civilians caught up in the nightmare. Based on Ann Patchett’s best-selling novel, this is a dramatic love story that follows a famous soprano (Julianne Moore) who travels to a military dictatorship in South America to give a private concert at a party for a wealthy Japanese industrialist (Ken Watanabe). Threats are made, lives are lost, a tense negotiation begins, and a month-long standoff ensues. While they are confined to the house, the hostages and their captors, who speak different languages, are forced to find ways to communicate. 1998: 1st Festival Audience Award We introduced the idea to our patrons to vote for the best new films for the first time in the 8th Chichester Film Festival (1999) and created various Audience Awards categories. The best new fiction film was, not surprisingly, selected by our audience for our preview of a multiaward-winning German film ‘Run Lola Run’, which had scooped the board in all the International Film Festivals. Here is another chance to re-view this gem! – Roger Gibson. Set against the gritty urban scenescape of Berlin and a pounding techno soundtrack, ‘Run Lola Run’ is a frenetic, inventive existential thriller that explores the life-altering impact of seemingly inconsequential actions. Beautiful, hip and young, poor Lola has but 20 minutes to locate a missing bag containing 100,000 Deutsche Marks or come up with the money some other way - if she can’t, gangsters are going to kill her boyfriend. A pulse-raising race against time, the film employs a startling array of innovative techniques to present three separate scenarios, all departing from a single split-second decision Lola makes. Franka Patente, who also sings on the soundtrack, is mesmerizing as Lola. (Subtitles) Germany 1998 Tom Twyker 81m.

An unusual set of circumstances brings unexpected success to a pop star. The story begins in 1999 when teenage Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) survives a violent tragedy. After singing at a memorial service, Celeste transforms into a burgeoning pop star with the help of her songwriter sister (Stacy Martin) and talent manager (Jude Law). Celeste’s meteoric rise to fame dovetails with a personal and national loss of innocence, consequently elevating the young powerhouse to a new kind of celebrity: American icon, secular deity, global superstar. By 2017, adult Celeste (Natalie Portman) is mounting a comeback after a scandalous incident almost derailed her career. There is much to love here - wonderful naturalistic acting, especially the virtuoso performance by an almost unrecognisable Portman; the glorious soundtrack; the script, with its often savagely witty dialogue; the moments of heart-stopping drama; and the striking visual images. Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Melissa McCarthy stars as Lee Israel, the best-selling celebrity biographer (and cat lover) who made her living in the 1970’s and 80’s profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estée Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee found herself unable to get published because she had fallen out of step with the marketplace, she turned her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack (Richard E. Grant). His performance and character remind one of his seminal 1987 black comedy ‘Withnail and I’ (but in a more tragi-comedic way), while she is a revelation, almost unrecognisable, in more than one sense of the word, from her previous big-screen outings. Just like Bart Leyton’s brilliant ‘American Animals’, this is a thriller that revels in the incompetence and flaws of its protagonists. A gem of a film. USA 2018 Marielle Heller 106m. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant Cold War satire remains as funny and razor-sharp today as it was in 1964. In 1964, with the Cuban Missile Crisis fresh in viewers’ minds, the Cold War at its frostiest, and the hydrogen bomb relatively new and frightening, Kubrick dared to make a film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button - and played the situation for laughs. Dr. Strangelove’s jet-black satire and a host of superb comic performances (including three from Peter Sellers) have kept the film fresh and entertaining. There is so much to like about this pre-eminent satire of Cold War paranoia, but Peter Sellers is undoubtedly the star of the show. And perhaps the highlight… whilst playing US President Merkin, he says – “Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the War Room!” A treat to be able to see this on the big screen. Woman at War

Kona Fer í Stríð Halla, a woman in her forties, declares war on the local aluminium industry to prevent it from disfiguring her country. In a literal power struggle between capitalism vs environmentalism, director Benedikt Erlingsson’s lyrical drama combines the beauty of Iceland with the strength of a woman. The backdrop is modern-day Iceland where our unlikely protagonist and self-appointed soldier is set to take on the country’s aluminium industry. Halla (Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir) is an unsuspecting middle-aged woman who, when not moonlighting as a covert environmental activist, is a single, well-respected choir teacher. A strong lead performance grounds the film’s fairy-tale quality in reality, as our heroine sets out to right the world’s wrongs with nothing more than a bow & arrow. This film’s impact will linger long after the closing credits roll. (Subtitles) Iceland/France 2018 Benedikt Erlingsson 101m.

But when one does, his problems aren’t solved, if anything, they are increased. When a failed rescue attempt strands a member of the rescue party (Maria Thelma Smaradottir), Overgård finds a purpose beyond himself, as he struggles to keep the injured woman alive. ‘Arctic’ proves that a good survival thriller doesn’t need much in the way of dialogue to get by - especially when Mads Mikkelsen is the one doing the surviving. A musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Elton John’s (Taron Egerton) breakthrough years. In recognition of these initiatives, I invited Mercia to select one of her favourite films, and we are showing on her birthday, the enchanting ‘The Bookshop’. – Roger Gibson. Set in 1959, this adaptation of Penelope Fitzgerald’s ‘The Bookshop’ focuses on Florence Green, a plucky middle-aged widow living in the coastal town of Harborough in East Anglia, who decides to open a bookshop. Despite a lack of encouragement from her bank manager and from some of the locals, Florence buys the freehold of a damp and dilapidated 15th century property called the Old House and is keen to get started. A master of the comedy of manners, Lubitsch was a shrewd and warmly-indulgent observer of the American way of life, love and the battle of the sexes. Born in Berlin, he rapidly progressed to be one of the most soughtafter directors of comedies and big-budget historical dramas in 1920s Germany. Snapped up by Hollywood, he established a reputation as a sophisticated European purveyor of moral comedies in the silent era, and then effortlessly made the transition to the sound period. A four-part course looking at the spy film genre from the silent era to the present day. This exciting event looks at the genre of spy films, either as fictional espionage - think Le Carré; a basis for fantasy - Bond, or as true stories - ‘Carve her Name with Pride’ and ‘Odette’. We showcase firstly the silent era and the early 1900’s - a time of paranoia and invasion fears, followed by the exploits of real life and fictional Allied agents in the WW2 years. At its peak of popularity in The Cold War, the spy film chose on one hand the real-life gritty agents in ‘The Ipcress File’ and the unrealistic but oh so popular Bond films. Lastly, we will take you from 2000 right up to the present day. Do join us and enjoy being shaken and perhaps stirred. Presenters: Mike Jennings, Nick Smedley, Patrick Hargood and Rosemary Coxon.

Stanley Kubrick: A Cinema Odyssey

Booking Ref

Richard Cupidi Day Course After his initial breakthrough film ‘The Killers’, Kubrick went on to produce a litany of 20th century cinematic icons: ‘Paths of Glory’, ‘Dr. Strangelove’ (screening at New Park on 26 and 28 May), ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, ‘The Shining’. An uncompromising master in scope and scale of visual storytelling, Kubrick ignored convention by embracing black comedy, political satire, war, historical drama and sexual melodrama. Rather than concentrate only on themes and narratives, our interactive workshop will explore Kubrick’s artistic development. We’ll also survey Kubrick’s exceptional technical accomplishments which helped him render his epic visions onscreen. Everyone welcome.
