Ten fishermen from Cornwall are signed by Universal Records and achieve a top ten hit with their debut album of Sea Shanties. Nine years ago, a group of Cornish fishermen were singing sea shanties in their village pub when a holidaying music executive (played here by Danny Mays) came in for a pint. The result was a million-pound record deal, chart-topping success, a performance at the Glastonbury Festival, and this feel-good film about their lives. In this school-set re-working of ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’, an awkward but imaginative pupil helps the handsome but spectacularly dim school-hero pursue the fiery daughter of a visiting French teacher. Set in an ultra-posh boys’ boarding school in the 1980’s, where masculinity is at once fragile and boorishly vocal, this charming film blends nostalgia with a strain of farce and class satire. As the film’s pipsqueak Cyrano, the ubiquitous Alex Lawther is a highlight, though Jonah Hauer-King, endearingly hilarious as his beefy marionette, is the film’s greatest revelation. Director Toby MacDonald shows an inventive visual imagination, particularly in the artistic items that Agnes (Pauline Etienne) and Amberson (Lawther) send each other – several of which wouldn’t be out of place in a Michel Gondry film. This action thriller infused with irreverent humour, stars Liam Neeson as Nels Coxman, a family man whose quiet life with his wife (Laura Dern) is upended following the mysterious death of their son. Nels’ search for justice turns into a vengeful hunt for Viking (Tom Bateman), a drug lord he believes is connected to the death. As one by one of Viking’s associates “disappear,” Nels goes from upstanding citizen to ice-cold vigilante. Every Rembrandt exhibition is eagerly anticipated, but this major show hosted by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum is an event like no other. Given exclusive, privileged access to both galleries, the film documents this landmark exhibition whilst interweaving Rembrandt’s life story with the behind-the-scenes preparations at these world-famous institutions. The exhibition focuses on the highlights from the final years of Rembrandt’s life, commonly thought to be his finest years. The masterpieces he produced during this period could be called his defining works, with each piece so soulful and honest that they helped sculpt our idea of Rembrandt as a man and as an artist. 1992: First Chichester Film Festival As part of the July Chichester Festivities, I founded our first fully fledged film festival for Chichester, with over 50 screenings including 12 new European films as part of the ironically “into Europe” theme of the Festivities. We have selected the previewed 1991 French masterpiece ‘Van Gogh’ to mark this new initiative. From the following year we moved into August as a stand-alone Film Festival for the next 27 years. – Roger Gibson. One of the greatest films by one of the finest directors of the second half of the 20th century, Maurice Pialat’s ‘Van Gogh’ represents an ambitious and crowning achievement in its portrayal of the master painter’s final weeks of life. Van Gogh, depicted by the remarkable actor/songwriter-singer Jacques Dutronc (Godard’s ‘Sauve qui peut (la vie)’), has arrived at Auvers-sur-Oise to come under the care of Dr. Gachet (Gérard Séty) for his nervous agitation. Soon after the arrival of Vincent’s brother Théo (Bernard Le Coq) and his wife, plein air portraiture and conviviality give way to the more crepuscular moods of brothels and cabarets, and the painter’s anguished existence, tossing between money worries and an impassioned relationship with the doctor’s teenage daughter, finally meets its terminal scene. Although other films have also covered this subject well, Pialat’s masterpiece towers over them all, and received high praise from Jean-Luc Go. France 1991 Maurice Pialat 158m. To complement the NT Live performance of ‘All About Eve’ from the West End, we bring you a rare opportunity to see the 1950 Bette Davis classic on the big screen. This is an elegantly bitchy backstage story revolving around aspiring actress Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). Tattered and forlorn, Eve shows up in the dressing room of Broadway mega-star Margo Channing (Bette Davis), weaving a melancholy life story. Taking pity on the girl, Margo takes Eve as her personal assistant. Before long, it becomes apparent that naïve Eve is a Machiavellian conniver who cold-bloodedly uses everyone around her to rise to the top of the theatrical heap. Director Julian Schnabel, a painter himself, rightly focuses on Van Gogh’s most prolific period, in which the artist churned out more than 200 paintings in 15 months, with minimal dialogue and striking visual poetry. This was the period where the artist moved from the grey modernity of Paris to the rainbow rusticity of Arles in southern France, where he produced many of his most famous works, among them ‘Sunflowers’ and ‘Starry Night Over the Rhone’. Other influential characters - Van Gogh’s loving brother and benefactor, Theo (Rupert Friend) and his demonstrative peer, the French painter Paul Gauguin (Oscar Isaac) - drift into the film, reminding the painter to soak up the vivid, quotidian ephemera of his surroundings when he is, for the most part, living in solitude. These experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Stanley Kubrick’s brilliant Cold War satire remains as funny and razor-sharp today as it was in 1964. In 1964, with the Cuban Missile Crisis fresh in viewers’ minds, the Cold War at its frostiest, and the hydrogen bomb relatively new and frightening, Kubrick dared to make a film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button - and played the situation for laughs. A man stranded in the Arctic after an airplane crash must decide whether to remain in the relative safety of his makeshift camp or to embark on a deadly trek through the unknown. Overgård (Mads Mikkelsen), a cargo pilot whose small plane has crashed somewhere in the Arctic before the film’s story begins, has figured out how to survive - fishing through the ice, sheltering in the remains of his plane, waiting patiently for a passing plane to spot him. But when one does, his problems aren’t solved, if anything, they are increased. When a failed rescue attempt strands a member of the rescue party (Maria Thelma Smaradottir), Overgård finds a purpose beyond himself, as he struggles to keep the injured woman alive. ‘Arctic’ proves that a good survival thriller doesn’t need much in the way of dialogue to get by - especially when Mads Mikkelsen is the one doing the surviving. Named after Elton John’s 1972 song, the film follows the early years of the chart-topping singer’s career, and his rise to fame, with his music as the backdrop. Its cast also includes ‘Bodyguard’ star Richard Madden as the singer’s manager John Reid and Bryce Dallas Howard as his mother Sheila Eileen. Elton John himself is a huge driving force behind the production of this film and was blown away when he first heard Egerton’s singing voice. Exhibition on Screen “I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based – Van Gogh & Japan at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – one can see why. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan, it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. After leaving Paris for the south of France, the productive and yet troubled years that followed must all be seen in the context of Van Gogh bending Japanese influences to his will. The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today. 2002: The Friends of the Cinema Founded One of our most dedicated patrons Mercia Last, created ‘The Friends’ in 2002, a membership scheme with discounts and ‘The Circle’ which encouraged patrons to meet and discuss some of the films screening at our Cinema. In recognition of these initiatives, I invited Mercia to select one of her favourite films, and we are showing on her birthday, the enchanting ‘The Bookshop’. – Roger Gibson. Set in 1959, this adaptation of Penelope Fitzgerald’s ‘The Bookshop’ focuses on Florence Green, a plucky middle-aged widow living in the coastal town of Harborough in East Anglia, who decides to open a bookshop. Despite a lack of encouragement from her bank manager and from some of the locals, Florence buys the freehold of a damp and dilapidated 15th century property called the Old House and is keen to get started. A free-spirited widow (Emily Mortimer), puts grief behind her and risks everything to open up a bookshop – the first such shop in the sleepy seaside town of Hardborough, England. Fighting damp, cold and considerable local apathy she struggles to establish herself but soon her fortunes change for the better. Penelope Fitzgerald’s book is filled with wonderfully evocative descriptions of East Suffolk and this film version adapted and directed by Spanish director Isabel Coixet co-staring Bill Nighy and Patricia Clarkson more than captures the beauty of Fitzgerald’s story. Fortune-hunting Hortensia, rich old Gremia and newly-arrivedin-town Lucentia all wish to court the handsome Bianco, but his mother Baptista decrees he cannot marry before his older brother, the sharp-tongued and quick-tempered Katherine. The bachelorette Petruchia steps up to the challenge and vows to woo Katherine, both for Katherine’s dowry and for the challenge of overcoming his fearsome reputation. Cue an explosive battle of the sexes in this electrically charged love story. Justin Audibert (‘Snow in Midsummer’, ‘The Jew of Malta’) turns Shakespeare’s fierce, energetic comedy of gender and materialism on its head to offer a fresh perspective on its portrayal of hierarchy and power. Studio Talk by Nick Smedley Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) was one of the most brilliant film directors in the history of Hollywood cinema. A master of the comedy of manners, Lubitsch was a shrewd and warmly-indulgent observer of the American way of life, love and the battle of the sexes. Born in Berlin, he rapidly progressed to be one of the most soughtafter directors of comedies and big-budget historical dramas in 1920s Germany. Snapped up by Hollywood, he established a reputation as a sophisticated European purveyor of moral comedies in the silent era, and then effortlessly made the transition to the sound period. This talk will focus on the sound films Lubitsch made, featuring wonderful clips from such masterpieces as ‘Ninotchka’, ‘To Be or Not to Be’ and ‘Heaven Can Wait’.

Another Fine Mess! The Films of Laurel and Hardy

Studio Talk by Mike Jennings After previous sessions in the Education programme’s season of Classic Comedy (Buster Keaton, The Marx Bros, Jacques Tati), the final session in the series looks at the greatest comedy double act in film history, one which has influenced countless other comedians in Britain and America, both in cinema and television. Not only did they become world famous, but they were regarded with enormous affection in every country in which their films were distributed, including many countries whose first language was not English. This two-hour session will look at their individual careers, lives and contributions, with lots of illustrative clips, and will be led by Mike Jennings, Lead Trustee for Education. The Comedy Classics series will be starting again next year, as laughter, and the appreciation of those who so brilliantly provide it, is a must in all our lives!

Studio Talk by Rosemary Coxon A different take on ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ at Chichester Festival Theatre and other Rattigan’s plays, this talk examines Rattigan’s works which became successful films. As well as ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ we will look at ‘The Winslow Boy’ and several other of his plays. A four-part course looking at the spy film genre from the silent era to the present day. This exciting event looks at the genre of spy films, either as fictional espionage - think Le Carré; a basis for fantasy - Bond, or as true stories - ‘Carve her Name with Pride’ and ‘Odette’. We showcase firstly the silent era and the early 1900’s - a time of paranoia and invasion fears, followed by the exploits of real life and fictional Allied agents in the WW2 years. At its peak of popularity in The Cold War, the spy film chose on one hand the real-life gritty agents in ‘The Ipcress File’ and the unrealistic but oh so popular Bond films. Richard Cupidi Day Course After his initial breakthrough film ‘The Killers’, Kubrick went on to produce a litany of 20th century cinematic icons: ‘Paths of Glory’, ‘Dr. Strangelove’ (screening at New Park on 26 and 28 May), ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, ‘The Shining’. An uncompromising master in scope and scale of visual storytelling, Kubrick ignored convention by embracing black comedy, political satire, war, historical drama and sexual melodrama. Rather than concentrate only on themes and narratives, our interactive workshop will explore Kubrick’s artistic development. We’ll also survey Kubrick’s exceptional technical accomplishments which helped him render his epic visions onscreen. Everyone welcome.
