welcome to
Chichester Cinema With the sunny weather here (or is it?), a visit to the cinema is not usually top of people’s lists to do… but we are here to tempt you! Starting with ‘Nothing Like a Dame’ in the first week; ‘The Happy Prince’ in June; ‘Mary Shelley’ in July; and ending with ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’ in August – I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty of all of you over the next few weeks. We team up with Chichester Cathedral to give you a quartet of Spiritually themed films over four consecutive Mondays, as part of the Festival of Chichester. Look out for ‘Paths of Glory’ on the big screen, and ‘Hotel Rwanda’ screened from a 35mm print. Finally, look out for our partnership with Tangmere Museum for a special screening of ‘Carve Her Name With Pride’ introduced by Dudley Hooley (Museum Director), coupled with a guided tour of Tangmere Military Aviation Museum led by David Coxon (curator). See you at the Cinema

In this modern, critically acclaimed thriller (96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), a family must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. Lee (John Krasinski), Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and their two children, have enclosed themselves in their isolated forest homestead. They speak almost entirely in sign language (subtitled) to preserve the silence. They walk in bare feet to dampen any noise, and even play Monopoly with felt tiles and roll the dice on the rug. One of the most inventive, beautifully crafted and acted horror films of recent times. USA 2018 John Krasinski 90m.

Zama Based on the 1956 novel by Antonio di Benedetto about Don Diego de Zama, a Spanish officer of the seventeenth century settled in Asunción, who awaits his transfer to Buenos Aires. Zama (Daniel Giménez Cacho) waits for a letter from the King granting him a transfer from the Paraguayan town in which he is stagnating, to a better place. He must ensure that nothing overshadows his transfer, so is forced to accept submissively every task entrusted to him by successive Governors who come and go as he stays behind. The years go by and the letter from the King never arrives. When Zama notices everything is lost, he joins a party of soldiers that go after a dangerous bandit. This is a strange, sensual wonder of a film, with a top-note of menace and a malarial air. (Subtitles) Argentina/Brazil 2017 Lucrecia Martel 115m.

Dames Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith engage in a round-table war of theatrical anecdotes in this outrageously funny documentary. The four dames, and true acting greats, discuss their careers and reminisce about their humble beginnings in the theatre. The chat takes place at the country home Plowright shared with her late husband, Laurence Olivier, with the obviously comfortable setting allowing the cameras to zoom in on a friendship that goes back more than half a century. Some great anecdotes (Dench’s tale about getting stung by a bee on the… ‘tail’ is hilarious) are intertwined with sensational stills and archive footage. These screenings include a special filmed introduction by Dame Joan Plowright and an exclusive interview with director Roger Michell. UK 2018 Roger Michell 100m.

Glyndebourne makes its welcome return this Summer with the Live transmission of Puccini’s tragic romance ‘Madama Butterfly’ in June, followed by Handel’s ‘Saul’ in July (look out for ‘Vanessa’ in August). Everybody is talking about the most exciting musical on the West End at the moment – ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’- winner of three WhatsOnStage Awards, it invokes the emotion and fun of ‘Billy Elliot’. Whilst on Musicals, don’t miss another opportunity to see ‘An American in Paris’ after its two Sold Out May screenings. Four dance events (from the Bolshoi, ROH, La Scala and ENO) are presented this season, with a highlight being Akram Khan’s ‘Giselle’ from the ENO, which received all-round 5-Star reviews.

Live Bolshoi Ballet Swanhilda notices her fiancée Franz is infatuated with the beautiful Coppélia who sits reading on her balcony each day. Nearly breaking up the two sweethearts, Coppélia is not what she seems and Swanhilda decides to teach Franz a lesson. The Bolshoi’s unique version of ‘Coppélia’ exhibits a fascinating reconstruction of the original 19th century choreography of this ebullient comedy involving a feisty heroine, a boyish fiancée with a wandering eye, and an old doll-maker. The company’s stunning corps de ballet shines in the divertissements and famous “dance of the hours,” and its principals abound in youthful energy and irresistible humour in this effervescent production. Music: Leo Delibes, Choreography: Sergei Vikharev, Libretto: Charles Nuitter and Arthur Saint-Leon. 165m approx including intervals.

First brought together by their shared love of music, ten years later Liam and Natalie have reached a breaking point. Opposites attract, but aren’t necessarily working long-term. Liam (Josh Whitehouse), a struggling musician, cannot let go of his vinyl collection and refuses to adapt to a world of smartphones and instant downloads. Natalie (Freya Mavor) has abandoned her dream of designing album covers and has become a rising star at her advertising firm. As they make the difficult decision to separate, they start by splitting their prized music library, but the soundtrack that defined their relationship keeps pulling them back together. Director Daniel Gill and writer Philip Gawthorne fashion the film as a tribute to Britpop – the excellent soundtrack includes Radiohead, Stereophonics, Spiritualized, The 1975 and more… but, oddly, as the film is named after their second album, no Blur. Swan Lake

Live ROH Ballet The Royal Ballet creates a new production with additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. A ballet in 3 Acts by Tchaikovsky. Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting, and when one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night. Given its status today as arguably the best loved and most admired of all classical ballets, it is surprising that at its 1877 premiere ‘Swan Lake’ was poorly received. It is thanks to the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that ‘Swan Lake’ has become part of not only ballet consciousness but also wider popular culture. 155m including 2 intervals.

A documentary that explores the cultural revolution that occurred in 1960s England, divided into three parts, roughly corresponding to the awakening, the flourishing and the decline of 1960s pop culture. Loaded with great footage from the era and accompanied by superbly cleaned-up music tracks from the Kinks, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and many others, this love letteras-documentary offers 85 minutes of good old fun. This is Michael Caine’s narrative about the unapologetic working class taking over popular culture. UK 2017 David Batty 85m. Back by Popular Demand

The world’s most beautiful woman was also the inventor of communication systems, but her arresting looks stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved. If this story was pitched for a fictional film, it would be laughed out of the room as being too far-fetched… but Lamarr was no ordinary screen siren. Recognition (and compensation) proved elusive in Lamarr’s lifetime, but in this marvellous documentary, a brilliant woman finally gets her due. USA 2017 Alexandra Dean 90m. Back by Popular Demand

Western Vestern A naturalistic, almost documentary-like feature that slowly builds into a film that is both startlingly direct and full of resonance and ambiguity. A group of German construction workers start a tough job at a remote site in the Bulgarian countryside. The foreign land awakens the men’s sense of adventure, but they are also confronted with their own prejudice and mistrust due to the language barrier and cultural differences. The stage is quickly set for a showdown when men begin to compete for recognition and favour from the local villagers. The story is a faultlessly observed, broodingly intelligent piece of realism, a dispatch from a sun-baked frontier that could hardly feel more mundane or specific, but which director Grisebach somehow suffuses with the beauty and power of myth. A totally absorbing film. Germany/Bulgaria 2017 Valeska Grisebach 121m. Subtitled screening

Semperoper Dresden Met with standing ovations from audiences, and an equally warm acclaim from critics, this opera in three acts by Richard Wagner, is presented as part of the Festival of Chichester. Starring in their premiere Wagnerian roles, Anna Netrebko and Piotr Beczała are led by the baton of Christian Thielemann. Netrebko’s finely calibrated interpretation captures the full range of Elsa’s emotional development. Georg Zeppenfeld as a convincing Heinrich der Vogler and Evelyn Herlitzius and Tomasz Konieczny as the opponents Ortrud and Friedrich von Telramund complete the cast. In the pit is Wagner’s “Wunderharfe”, the Staatskapelle Dresden, conducted by Thielemann, doubtlessly today’s foremost conductor of this repertoire. Captured Live February 2015. The Young Karl Marx Le Jeune Karl Marx The early years of Philosopher and Revolutionary Socialist Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Jenny Marx, between Paris, Brussels and London (all beautifully recreated in this engaging film). 26-year-old Karl Marx (August Diehl) embarks with his wife, Jenny (Vicky Krieps), on the road to exile. In 1844 Paris, he meets Friedrich Engels (Stefan Konarske), an industrialist’s son, who investigated the sordid birth of the British working-class. Engels, the dandy, provides the last piece of the puzzle to the young Karl Marx’s new vision of the world. Together, between censorship and the police’s repression, riots and political upheavals, they will lead the labour movement during its development into a modern era. Raoul Peck, who recently won a BAFTA for ‘I Am Not Your Negro’, delivers a film that is both intellectually serious and engagingly free-spirited. France/Belgium /Germany 2017 Raoul Peck 118m.

Glyndebourne Live East meets West with devastating consequences in Puccini’s tragic romance. ‘Madama Butterfly’ makes its Glyndebourne Festival debut in Annilese Miskimmon’s thought-provoking production. Bursting with exotic colour and memorable melodies, Puccini’s seductive score conceals a dramatic blade that cuts to the heart. Compressing ‘great grief into small souls’, as the composer himself described it, ‘Madama Butterfly’ is a classic love story that never fails to move, a tragic romance that sweeps you along in the intensity of its action. Blending authentic Japanese music with luscious European harmonies and orchestration, the opera is an irresistible fusion of East and West. This production updates the original turnof-the-century setting to the 1950s, confronting the darker political and emotional currents of a work that acknowledges that there are some barriers too great for even love to conquer. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. 210m approx inc interval.

The untold story of the last days in the tragic times of Oscar Wilde, a person who observes his own failure with ironic distance and regards the difficulties that beset his life with detachment and humour. The film is a deeply felt, tremendously acted tribute to courage. ‘The Happy Prince’ is evidently a passion project for Rupert Everett, who writes, directs and stars. But this is not the Oscar Wilde of other biopics, basking in the fame of the London stage, a vision in velvet dispensing witticisms like papal benedictions. This is a Wilde broken by Reading Gaol, constantly begging for money but unable to hold onto it. “Like dear St Francis of Assisi,” he complains, “I am wedded to poverty. But in my case the marriage is not a happy one.” Raddled, rouged and raging against the world (but often tender, too), Everett’s Wilde is an extraordinary achievement – it is surely the best thing he has done as an actor. Germany/Belgium/UK 2018 Rupert Everett 105m.

Stanley Kubrick’s blistering indictment of military politics is an unforgettable movie experience and perhaps his best film. Adapted from a 1935 Herbert Cobb novel, this is a brilliant tale of horror in the trenches. General Mireau (George Macready) orders a suicidal charge on a German stronghold, and later orders three random soldiers to be shot for cowardice. Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) is repulsed by the General’s arrogant incompetence, and decides to defend the innocent men in their court-martial. To watch this film is to experience the birth of one of the greatest directors of the 20th Century. USA 1957 Stanley Kubrick 88m.

A powerful film set during the Rwandan genocide, based on the true story of Paul Rusesabagina (outstandingly portrayed by Don Cheadle), a hotel manager seeking to provide sanctuary to those fleeing the violence. 1994. In Rwanda, the classification of the native population into Hutus and Tutsis, arbitrarily done by the colonial Belgians, is now ingrained within Rwandan mentality despite the Rwandan independence. Despite the Belgians having placed the Tutsis in a higher position during the Belgian rule, they have placed the majority Hutus in power after independence. Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu married to a Tutsi, Tatiana Rusesabagina, is the House Manager of the Hotel Des Milles Collines in Kigali. Kang Rinpoche Winner of the Audience Award at the 2016 Chichester Film Festival. This docu-drama follows the journey of a group of Tibetans on a bowing pilgrimage across the world’s highest plateau to Lasa, the holy capital of Tibet. Road movies are a staple of cinema, but they are rarely as breathtaking, immersive and intense as this. The director ‘cast’ a group of Tibetan villagers who were planning the traditional Buddhist pilgrimage to Lhasa – a sort of once-in-a-lifetime act of devotion akin to the Islamic Hajj – and structured a loose narrative around their incredible 1,200-mile journey. This is a moving testament to a mutual devotion of spirituality, a fantastic and refreshingly benevolent look at a different culture. Blurring the confines between documentary and fiction, it takes the empathetic viewer on an incredible journey. (Subtitles) China 2015 Zhang Yang 115m.

The Wild Boys Les Garçons Sauvages French director Bertrand Mandico delivers his debut feature, an experimental journey to the limits of imposed gender roles, set in an undisclosed realm of wonders, shot in beautiful black and white tones. At the beginning of the 20th century on Réunion Island, five teenage boys (Pauline Lorillard, Vimala Pons, Diane Rouxel, Anael Snoek and Mathilde Warnier), the offspring of wealthy families, commit a crime. They will be sentenced to serve the Dutchman (Sam Louwyck), a captain whose ship will become their penitentiary. After many adventures, they will reach a wild, supernatural island, where Dr Séverine (Elina Löwensohn) lives. There, everything will change forever. Initially blending elements from ‘Lord of the Flies’ and ‘A Clockwork Orange’, ‘The Wild Boys’ evolves into a subtle example of edgy political cinema in today’s mellow dullness. By using an all-female cast in the roles of teenage boys, Mandico, who also wrote the script, immediately raises the question of the enforced limitations on genders. This is a sumptuous cinematic adaptation of Penelope Fitzgerald’s celebrated 1978 novel, which tells the story of Florence Green’s ultimately doomed attempt to re-energise an out-of-touch rural townsfolk through the dissemination of some of the most stirring literature of the day. Florence (Emily Mortimer) decides, against polite but ruthless local opposition, to open a bookshop, a decision which becomes a political minefield. Leaving grief and a dead husband in the past, she takes life into her own hands by opening a bookshop in Hardborough, a quiet Anglian town, and one sheltered from the social and sexual revolutions taking place in the far away urban centres. Through works of fiction such as Nabokov’s ‘Lolita’ and Ray Bradbury’s ‘Fahrenheit 451’, she stirs long-buried feelings in the townsfolk and in particular in the reclusive Mr Brundish (Bill Nighy) with whom she subsequently strikes up a deep bond. Premiered at Sundance 2018, this is a thoroughly enjoyable ride that captures both the excitement of the party and the shameful details of its aftermath. Studio 54 was the epicenter of 70s hedonism – a place that not only redefined the nightclub, but also came to symbolize an entire era. Its co-owners, Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, two friends from Brooklyn, seemed to come out of nowhere to suddenly preside over a new kind of New York society. Now, 39 years after the velvet rope was first slung across the club’s hallowed threshold, a feature documentary tells the real story behind the greatest club of all time. For those of us who never went (and probably couldn’t have gotten in if we tried) to the infamous club, this documentary lets us taste a bit of the ecstasy. USA 2018 Matt Tyrnauer 98m.

The pair are two outsiders constrained by polite society but bound together by a natural chemistry and progressive ideas that are beyond the boundaries of their age and time. Mary (Elle Fanning) and Percy (Douglas Booth) declare their love for each other and much to her family’s horror they run away together, joined by Mary’s half-sister Claire (Bel Powley.) In the midst of growing tension within their relationship during their stay at Lord Byron’s (Tom Sturridge) house at Lake Geneva, the idea of Frankenstein is conceived when a challenge is put to all houseguests to write a ghost story. An incredible character is created, which will loom large in popular culture for centuries to come, but society at the time puts little value in female authors. At the tender age of 18, Mary is forced to challenge these preconceptions, to protect her work and to forge her own identity. This is a luscious-looking spectacle, drenched in the colours and visceral sensations of nature, the sensuality of young lovers, and the passionate disappointment of loss and betrayal. In the Fade Aus dem Nichts Diane Kruger is once again outstanding (she won Best Actress at Cannes 2017 for this role), in this unsettling film which earned director Fatih Akin a Palme D’Or nomination. Out of nowhere, Katja’s (Kruger) life falls apart when her husband Nuri (Numan Acar) and little son Rocco are killed in a bomb attack. The mind-numbing search for the perpetrators and reasons behind the senseless killing complicate Katja’s painful mourning, opening wounds and doubts. Danilo (Denis Moschitto), a lawyer and Nuri’s best friend, represents Katja in the eventual trial against the two suspects, but the ordeal pushes Katja to the edge – she wants justice. ‘Queens of the Stone Age’ frontman Josh Homme composed the film’s score, whose discordant sounds add an appropriate edginess. Glyndebourne / Handel Barrie Kosky’s sensational staging of Handel’s oratorio marries spectacle and psychology. Handel’s vision of a Lear-like king is astonishing in its psychological complexity, offering a musical portrait of mental collapse few have since matched. Combined with thrilling choruses that exploit the virtuosic potential of their singers, exquisite arias and bold orchestration filled with unusual instruments, it creates a Biblical drama of truly Shakespearean scope. Fresh from its triumph at the 2015 Glyndebourne Festival, Kosky’s blazingly original and visually spectacular staging of Handel’s oratorio returns for a first revival, pairing baroque music with contemporary choreography and lavish designs to create an enthralling theatrical fusion of old and new. Handel expert Laurence Cummings conducts an all-star cast, including Festival favourites Iestyn Davies and Allan Clayton. Sung in English with English subtitles. 210m approx inc interval.

With its use of colour and imagery, this is one of the most eyecatching and beautiful Australian films of recent years. Evelyn (Melissa George), a burlesque queen, bewitches single dad Al (Ewen Leslie) and his teenage son, Fin (Ed Oxenbould) with her zest for life. When father and son discover they are competing for the affections of the same woman, old wounds are reopened over the death of Fin’s mother. Through the vivacious Evelyn, Fin learns the power of forgiveness and relinquishes his goddess in return for a family. It is a bold and promising work, rich in imagery and led by uniformly strong performances. The visuals are the most arresting aspect of the film, grabbing the eye with a bold use of colour and occasional sequences of magical realism. Australia 2018 Priscilla Cameron 97m.

RSC What if your first true love was someone you’d been told to hate? Ripped apart by the bitter divisions of their parents, two young people will risk everything to be together. The most famous story of love at first sight explodes with intense passion and an irresistible desire for change. Will this spark a revolution, or will division continue to tear through generations? The youthful energy that powers ‘Romeo and Juliet’ all too often proves elusive, the teenage heat and the rapid escalation from passion to tragedy are not easy things to pin down. Erica Whyman’s fresh, engaging production is more successful than most in this respect. It benefits from two hugely appealing performances from Karen Fishwick and Bally Gill as the star-crossed lovers. 163m inc interval.

From New Dawn to Cold War: Hollywood and Politics 1932-1948 This talk exposes the often-overlooked political programme expounded in Hollywood’s supposedly escapist cinema. With extracts from classics by Capra, Welles, Huston, Lang and others, Hollywood expert Nick Smedley will chart the close alliance between the American film industry and the four terms of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Be prepared to be enlightened, surprised and entertained! While Hollywood seldom made overtly political films in the 1930s and 1940s, the American cinema industry embraced the liberal politics of Roosevelt’s ‘New Deal’ with unabashed enthusiasm. Highlighting social injustices and criticising unbridled capitalism, Hollywood films developed a whole new lexicon of liberalism in the 1930s. The arrival of the ‘little man’ who stands up to the oppressive forces of big business and corruption; the rejection of success and money for the softer values of community and reputation. But the arrival of the 1940s, the decline of FDR’s social programme and the onset of the Cold War saw a marked change in Hollywood. As the liberal film-makers dived for cover, the forces of reaction and anti-Communism came looking for scapegoats - and found them in Hollywood. The films were now dark, pessimistic and lonely, Film Noir was born. Nick Smedley is a distinguished freelance historian of American cinema since 1930, an entertaining speaker and film author.

A Tribute to Lewis Gilbert
Booking Ref
Film Director Extraordinaire Lewis Gilbert, who died recently, was a master craftsman who could direct War films, Bond epics and working-class films with consistent quality and outstanding technical skills. He started his career in wartime film units making such movies as ‘Carve Her Name with Pride’, ‘Sink the Bismarck’ and ‘Reach for the Sky’. He then took the helm in three successful Bond Movies and created what is known as the “working class trilogy” of ‘Educating Rita’, ‘Alfie’ and ‘Shirley Valentine’, with Alfie and Shirley perfecting the acting technique of speaking directly to the camera. ‘Shirley Valentine’ is the forerunner of the Golden Years films like ‘Marigold Hotel’ but with a definite edge, and one of his last films ‘Stepping Out’ with Lisa Minnelli has the same gutsy ‘never–say–die’ ethos. The Guardian film critic, Peter Bradshaw describes Lewis Gilbert as “a powerhouse of invention and movie showmanship”. We invite you to join us in celebrating his life and achievements. This talk will be led by Rosemary Coxon, the Cinema’s Education Officer.
