Chichester Cinema We are oh so very excited about this coming Summer here at New Park. Without going into too much detail about the wealth of quality films that we have on offer (don’t miss ‘Frantz’, ‘The Levelling’, ‘My Cousin Rachel’, ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’, ‘McLaren’, ‘Churchill’), or the wide array of Performance cinema (‘Hokusai’, ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’, ‘Berlin Philharmonic Live’, ‘Michelangelo’…), or even the Australian Season in partnership with Pallant House Gallery, we will be renovating our dear auditorium with new seating, as well as a brand new heating and ventilation system. All this will be completed in time for the Opening Gala of the 26th Chichester International Film Festival on Thursday August 10th. From that day on, we will have an auditorium up to the very high standards that we have always set ourselves, with the films we programme for our dedicated patrons. See you at the Cinema

The Zookeeper’s Wife The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. World War II was the source of dozens of instances of benevolence and bravery. But few top the actions taken by the Polish couple who risked retaliation from the Nazis for hiding 300 Jews at the Warsaw Zoo. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh) have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under their care. Set in Somerset, this is a superbly crafted drama with a powerful sense of place, which may be the best debut film of the year. Trainee veterinarian Clover Catto returns to the farm where she grew up after hearing news that her brother Harry has died in what appears to be a suicide. Finding the family home in a state of horrendous disrepair following the 2014 floods that devastated the area, Clover is forced to confront her father Aubrey about the farm, the livestock and, crucially, the details surrounding Harry’s death. Clover’s discoveries send her on an emotional journey of reckoning with her family, her childhood and herself. The legendary outlaw Ned Kelly (Mick Jagger) was an inspiration for Sidney Nolan. Here screening in a rare 35mm print! Mick Jagger stars as Ned Kelly, a legendary outlaw of the Australian outback sought by authorities for stealing horses. At age 20, Ned has already served a three-year prison term. When his mother (Clarissa Kaye) is arrested and jailed on a bogus murder charge, Ned offers to surrender in exchange for his mother’s freedom. When the authorities refuse, the Kelly brothers go on a robbing rampage. Tony Richardson’s film has divided opinion in the 40+ years since its release, but it has received cult status. It is a film which contains both sublime, rain-soaked landscapes accompanied by the lilting songs of Kris Kristofferson. The film’s fun spirit, excellent soundtrack and superb cinematography and heartfelt (if rather biased) portrayal of the film’s hero, makes ‘Ned Kelly’ an entertaining and worthwhile watch, aided by Jagger’s strong, often scenestealing performance. Nicholas Roeg’s wonderfully uplifting portrait of Aboriginal culture and respect to the rugged and often barren Australian outback. Very few films achieve subliminal greatness with cross-cultural impact, but ‘Walkabout’ is one of those films – a visual tone poem that functions more as an allegory than a conventionally plotted adventure. Considered a cult favourite for years, Roeg’s 1971 film centres upon two British children who are rescued in the Australian outback by a young aborigine. Through exquisite cinematography and a story of subtle human complexity, the film continues to resonate on many thematic and artistic levels. Just as Roeg intended, it is a cautionary morality tale in which the limitations and restrictions of civilisation become painfully clear when the two children (played by Jenny Agutter and Roeg’s young son, Lucien John) cannot survive without the aborigine’s assistance. A young woman goes on a 1,700 mile trek across the deserts of West Australia with her four camels and faithful dog. Based on the true story of Robyn Davidson who in 1977 undertook an extraordinary solo trek by foot across the harsh Australian outback, John Curran’s (‘The Painted Veil’) mesmerising film is a paean to both one woman’s courage and to the magnificent land she traverses. When Robyn (Mia Wasikowska) arrives in Alice Springs she has nothing but her pet dog and a wild ambition that the locals pay no heed to, but after months of camping out and working on a camel farm, they begin to take her seriously. Sidney Nolan is the subject of a current exhibition at Pallant House Gallery marking the artist’s centenary, complimented by this documentary. If all art has a biographical element, this was dramatically true in the case of Nolan. Through interviews with friends, contemporaries and observers, producer Catherine Hunter reconstructs the intimate relationships that shaped Nolan’s life: the women he loved, and who loved him. Figures in the Landscape Myth and Legend in Australian Art and Cinema Australian film historian Stephen Morgan will lead us on a journey through some of the intersections of Australian art and cinema, and their depictions of unique lives and landscapes. Through film clips and reproductions of key artworks, we will encounter the myths and legends surrounding Rebels like Ned Kelly (Tony Richardson, 1970), Explorers like Robyn from Tracks (John Curran, 2013), and Strangers such as the Victorian schoolgirls in Picnic at Hanging Rock (Peter Weir, 1975). Strangers are also central to Walkabout (Nicolas Roeg, 1971), which will introduce the fourth and final section, Country, which surveys closer relationships with landscape via the figure of the Indigenous Australian. The Secret Scripture A psychiatrist (Eric Bana) examines Roseanne McNulty (Vanessa Redgrave), an elderly Irishwoman living in a mental institution, and learns more about her past in the process. Rose has been a resident for more than 40 years for killing her baby, but she remains adamant that her son lives. Rooney Mara plays Roseanne as a young woman in flashbacks that detail her love triangle with a fighter pilot (Jack Reynor) and a priest (Theo James). François Ozon’s new film is set in the aftermath of WWI, where a young German who grieves the death of her fiancé in France, meets a mysterious Frenchman who visits the fiancé’s grave to lay flowers. Anna (Paula Beer) is a bereft young German woman whose fiancé, Frantz, was killed during trench warfare in WWI, and Adrien (Pierre Niney) is a French veteran of the war who shows up mysteriously in her town, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat, yet Anna gradually gets closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz, conjured up in evocative flashbacks. Ozon drew his inspiration from Ernst Lubitsch’s 1932 drama ‘Broken Lullaby’, with stunning visual references to painter Caspar David Friedrich. This harrowing, high-pitched drama is set entirely in a police truck during riots between Egypt’s pro-military supporters and the Muslim Brotherhood. In July 2013 President Morsi was overthrown by the army and many people took off to the streets either to celebrate or protest. We start in an empty police van which soon fills with an American/ Egyptian reporter, revolutionaries, Muslim Brotherhood supporters, and young men who had nothing to do with it. Aside from the keen sense of claustrophobia, the lensing captures in horrifying, quick-eyed observation the chaos outside. As typhoons buffet Tokyo, the film perceptively, in Ozu like style, examines a broken family and the father’s dogged attempts to glue it back together. This perceptive tale is of divorced father Ryota (Abe Hiroshi), a one-time novelist who may have gambled away his adulthood. Save for an addiction to betting, he’s inherited little of worth from his late father. And his still-spry mother (the wonderful Kirin Kiki,) has a habit of blithely tossing out the most valuable heirlooms. One thunderous night, Ryota lures his son and ex-wife to grandma’s flat, in the conspiratorial hope of patching things up. Ossessione Rare screenings of Visconti’s early 1942 masterpiece based upon James Cain’s novel ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice’. A restless wife, Giovanna (superbly played by Clara Calamai), meets Gino (equally brilliantly played by Massimo Girotti), a rough and handsome vagabond. Their passionate affair leads to the murder of Giovanna’s boorish husband. Can a strong and sensual affair survive the guilt? ‘Ossessione’ is a dark and provocative drama of sexual tension. It heralded a new era of Italian cinema, establishing Luchino Visconti as a leading and controversial exponent of neo-realism. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Mike Nichols’s scorching film version of Edward Albee’s sensational play. Elegantly photographed in crisp black and white by the great Haskell Wexler, the play has been “opened up” for the screen by director Nichols without diluting its concentrated, claustrophobic power. Elizabeth Taylor has never been better or brasher as Martha, letting loose with all the fury of a drunken, frustrated academic’s wife on one crazy Walpurgisnacht bender. Richard Burton plays her husband, George, the ineffectual history professor married to the college president’s daughter. And George Segal and Sandy Dennis are young, callow Nick and Honey, who have no idea what sort of mind-warping psychological games they’re being drawn. The classic 1949 Ealing comedy directed by Alexander Mackendrick starring Basil Radford and Joan Greenwood. Filmed at Barra in the Outer Hebrides, ‘Whisky Galore!’ was based upon a true incident, the foundering of a cargo ship off the Isle Of Eriskay with 50,000 cases of Scotch aboard. The Scottish islanders of Todday by-pass war time rationing and delight in smuggling cases of their favourite tipple from the wrecked ship. Basil Radford stars as the teetotal English official, who is totally unable to comprehend the significance of whisky to the islanders. Marvellously detailed and well played, it firmly established the richest Ealing vein with the common theme of a small group triumphing over a more powerful opponent. The Blue Lamp

Another 1950 Ealing classic starring a very young Dirk Bogarde as a cold gangster in a beautifully newly restored print. An immensely popular British crime film, Basil Dearden’s ‘The Blue Lamp’ was scripted by ex-policeman T.E.B Clark, the writer who arguably did most to define Ealing Studio’s post-war identity. The film marked the first appearance of the character of Jack Warner – later to be immortalized in ‘Dixon of Dock Green’. The story follows two London policemen whose daily routine is interrupted by a botched robbery and subsequent murder hunt. Starring Dirk Bogarde it was originally released in 1950. Sixtyseven years on, it’s hard to appreciate just how shocking one key scene in ‘The Blue Lamp’ was considered by British audiences at the time. No – no spoilers for those who haven’t seen it! The Man Between

Carol Reed’s underrated 1953 cold war thriller, starring James Mason, Claire Bloom, and Hildegarde Knieff in another stunningly restored print. A later collaboration between James Mason and Carol Reed, ‘The Man Between’ is often considered a companion piece to ‘The Third Man’ thanks to its atmospheric portrayal of a city struggling to survive in a grim post-war reality of poverty and mistrust. The action is here transposed to a divided Berlin, and to the beginning of the Cold War. Unlike the devilish Harry Lime, Mason’s world-weary dealer Ivo Kerr is ultimately still a decent man, compelled by his love for a naïve schoolteacher to make one last misguided trip through the Brandenberg Gate, with potentially tragic consequences. The Claire Bloom/Mason performances in the last 10-15 minutes is sublime and makes this comparable with ‘The Third Man’. UK 1953 Carol Reed 100m.

As Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ hits screens across the UK, revisit the film that first conjured the story’s magical spell. No, not any of the Disney versions, but Jean Cocteau’s classic fantasy re-casting the well-known fairy tale for adults. When Beauty’s father picks a rose at a deserted castle, a beast in Prince’s clothing (Jean Marius) appears and tells him he must die. He sends the man home to say good-bye to his family, whereupon Beauty (Josette Day) offers to take her father’s place. She goes off to the castle but instead of killing her, the beast falls in love with her. Stunning cinematography replicates the lighting of the Dutch masters and the whole film is the epitome of cinematic art wherein the magic is created ‘in camera’. Based on the 1951 Daphne Du Maurier novel, this is a dark romance about a young Englishman who plots revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin, believing that she murdered his guardian. Young orphan Phillip (Sam Claflin) has his tranquil existence interrupted when he receives a note from his older cousin, who writes to say that he is being poisoned. Cousin Ambrose soon turns up dead of an apparent brain tumour, but Phillip is suspicious of Ambrose’s strange wife Rachel (Rachel Weisz). When she appears at Philip’s home, he determines to solve the mystery, but finds himself captivated by the presence of the enigmatic widow. As he loses his resolve the more his infatuation grows, he may even be endangering his own life in the process. Co-stars include Iain Glen, Holliday Grainger and Simon Russell Beale. From director Roger Michell, who has experience in both costume drama (‘Persuasion’, ‘Hyde Park on Hudson’) and thriller (‘Enduring Love’) as well as rom-com classics like ‘Notting Hill’, this is the first feature film adaptation of the novel since 1952. Watching the Detectives Enjoy a new course taking a fresh look at Crime Thrillers, Film Noir, Heist movies, Courtroom dramas, Mob films and even Crime comedy as seen in some of our best loved films and some that may be new to you – to thrill and excite you! For instance, the Gangster genre showed how criminal networks operate inside their own fiercely moral code, while Film Noir found that criminality resides in cynicism, obsession and desperation. In the first session, crime writer Simon Brett talks about the relationship between crime and the movies. His own standalone thriller, ‘A Shock to the System’, was made into a feature film starring Michael Caine, and he went through the common novelist’s experience of having absolutely nothing to do with the making of the movie. Simon’s session will be illustrated with clips from that film and others which tread the tricky path between crime and comedy. So if you have a taste for capers and heists, you’re in for a treat. In the next two sessions, led by Rosemary Coxon, the cinema’s Education Officer, we will look at a range of movies from the early twentieth century onwards which perfectly illustrate how crime and transgression are the stuff of drama and real life. The big screen loves these guys and you will too! See you at the cinema! Simon Brett’s hundredth book will be published in September 2017. Many of them have been crime novels including the Charles Paris, Mrs Pargeter, Fethering, Blotto & Twinks series as well as the above mentioned A Shock to the System. For radio and television he wrote After Henry and No Commitments. A former President of the Detection Club, in 2014 he was awarded the Crime Writers’ Association’s highest award, the Diamond Dagger. And in the 2016 New Year’s Honours he was appointed an OBE ‘for services to literature’.

A Day with Alfred Hitchcock Day Course The Education Department of Chichester Cinema at New Park invites you to a day with the master film maker. Our guest speaker, Ian Haydn Smith, will introduce you to one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. To watch a Hitchcock film is to be thrilled by its suspense and stunned by its artistry. This day course which will feature many excerpts from Hitchcock films, informative discussion and lively debate. No prior knowledge of Alfred Hitchcock or his films is necessary, and we hope you will leave with a real understanding of why Hitchcock is key to an understanding of the history of cinema. Ian Haydn Smith is a London-based writer. He is Editor of Curzon Magazine and co-author of ‘New British Cinema: From Submarine to 12 Years a Slave’.
