Amy – Pg49
Those of you have visited the Cinema recently will have noticed that there have been many changes. Upgrades include a fresh coat of paint; information screens in the foyer and bar to replace the endless flyers; box office counter; removal of the impersonal glass barrier on the Box Office counter; poster boxes; Box Office furniture... and still to come, there will be some comfy foyer seating; plants; and a new foyer floor put in on the 13-15 June. All of this is due to you!!! We have gathered the money brought in by the last 2 Winter Raffles and March’s Film Quiz, and together with the New Park Centre, we are giving Chichester Cinema at New Park the space it deserves. PLEASE NOTE: The Box Office and Cinema will be closed on the 13, 14 & 15 June – only internet bookings will be processed. Summer means Festivals and Fun, and we here at New Park never miss out on our opportunity to raise the ‘Film’ banner at this time of year. The 24th Chichester International Film Festival launches on the 7th and 8th August with two Open Air Screenings at Chichester’s Priory Park. A week before that (Monday 3rd August) we will have a Festival Programme Launch at the New Park Bar. Come and join us from 11:30-12:30 for some nibbles and a drink, have a chat to Roger Gibson (Festival Artistic Director) about some hidden gems and pick up your Festival Programme before anyone else. Every year we have the most generous of supporters who help us bring the best films to the Film Festival by becoming a Festival Patron. See page 6 for details on how you too can become a Festival Patron. See you at the Cinema

‘A Pair so Famous’: The Afterlife of Antony and Cleopatra To complement our screening of ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ (see below) we present this informative talk on Shakespeare’s play. This talk will discuss the reception of Shakespeare’s ‘Antony and Cleopatra’, drawing in particular on twentieth-century film and TV adaptations of the play from the 1970s and 1980s. It will explore the cultural clash between Egyptian sensuality and Roman self-restraint; the central characters’ journey from transgression to tragedy; the difficulty of representing the figure of Cleopatra, and constructions of heroism and myth. Páraic Finnerty is Reader in English and American Literature at the University of Portsmouth. He is the author of Emily Dickinson’s Shakespeare (2006) and the co-author of Victorian Celebrity Culture and Tennyson’s Circle (2013).

Antony and Cleopatra The third of the Roman Tragedies, ‘Antony & Cleopatra’ picks up Antony’s story many years after Julius Caesar. Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence. The Globe’s 2014 envisioning of this iconic play encapsulates these themes whilst deftly threading a sense of comedy throughout, and Olivier Award-winner Eve Best’s Cleopatra ‘kisses the audience’ (Guardian) with her magnetically humorous performance. The cast also includes Clive Wood (Antony) and Phil Daniels. 180m approx inc. interval. BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Disgraced and forced to resign, no-one is surprised when Harry disappears one night off a bridge into the Thames. With MI5 on its knees in the wake of the Qasim debacle and facing controversial reform, former agent Will Holloway (Kit Harrington) is brought back to uncover the truth they feared - Harry’s still alive. He’s gone rogue, and needs Will’s help. Reese Witherspoon stars in this affecting and often funny film about Sudanese refugee children trying to adjust to an alien America culture. After their village is destroyed and their parents killed by Northern Sudanese militia, Theo, his siblings and other survivors make a difficult journey to a refugee camp in Kenya. Thirteen years later, the group gets the chance to settle in the U.S. They are met in Kansas by Carrie Davis (Witherspoon), who has been charged with finding them jobs. However, seeing how adrift they are in 20th-century America, Carrie endeavours to help them in rebuilding their shattered lives. The main characters are played by actual refugees - two of whom were child soldiers - and their uninflected, authoritative performances steal the film. USA 2014 Shawn Linden & Philippe Falardeau 110m

Winterbottom has managed to mould Brand’s scatterbrain thinking and polysyllabic rhetoric into a thought-provoking film that combines interviews with Brand himself, along with politicians and bankers. This is a funny and boisterous attack on the dishonesty and mediocrity of Britain’s new plutocrat classes, and those politicians who created them. Hailed by the Financial Times as ‘pure magic’, Laurent Pelly’s unique interpretation of Ravel’s two short operas is a true spectacle. ‘L’heure Espagnole’ is a sassy and funny sex farce; while ‘L’Enfant et les Sortilèges’ is a touching mortality tale in which fantastical fairy tale characters, animals, furniture and crockery all come to life to teach a small boy about kindness. Captured live at Glyndebourne’s 2012 Festival, this award-winning recording stars French mezzo-soprano Stéphanie d’Oustrac and Canadian baritone Elliot Madore. 135m including an interval between operas. Altman A look at the life and work of American filmmaker Robert Altman, which will make you want to revisit the Director’s back catalogue. Robert Altman (1925 - 2006) approached film-making in the same improvisatory way as the jazz musicians he so admired from his Kansas childhood. His work was impossible to classify - subversive, funny and generous, he was always revered by his repertory of actors – and sometimes by audiences and critics too. Altman was the seasoned TV director with a habit of trying out his chancier ideas when the frowning studio boss was out of town; he made authentic American auteur cinema such as ‘M*A*S*H’, ‘Nashville’ and ‘The Long Goodbye’, and in his later years triumphed with ‘The Player’ and ‘Gosford Park’ (screening here next week). His naturalistic technique revolutionised ensemble drama and the recording and direction of dialogue. Canada 2014 Ron Mann 96m

In this sequel to ‘Hope and Glory’, Bill Rohan has grown up and is drafted into the army, where he and best friend Percy battle their snooty superiors on the base and look for love in town. The hilarious highlight of John Boorman’s 1987 film ‘Hope and Glory’ was 9-year-old Bill rejoicing in the destruction of his school by an errant Luftwaffe bomb. ‘Queen and Country’ picks up the story nearly a decade later as Bill (Boorman’s alter-ego played by Callum Turner) begins basic training in the early Fifties, during the Korean War. He is joined by a trouble-making army mate, Percy (Caleb Landry Jones). They never get near Korea, but engage in a constant battle of wits with the Catch-22-worthy, Sgt. Major Bradley. Richard E. We are delighted to present Julie Taymor’s much heralded and sold-out production, filmed at the ‘Theatre for a New Audience’ in Brooklyn, New York in 2014. Of all Shakespeare’s plays, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is the most phantasmagorical, featuring fairies, spells, and hallucinatory lovers. Julie Taymor turns out a production that’s visually breath-taking, funny, sexy and darkly poetic. With cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto (Argo, Frida) and music by Academy Award-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal, this is an immersive, inventive cinematic experience that was filmed during the show’s highly acclaimed inaugural run. The feats of visual imagination are ingenious and plentiful, but beating at the centre of the film is an emotionally moving take on the deeper human aspects of this beloved tale. 148m (no interval)

She changes her name, her style, drops out of school and starts stealing to be accepted into the gang. When her home situation becomes unbearable, Marieme seeks solace in an older man who promises her money and protection. Realizing this sort of lifestyle will never result in the freedom and independence she truly desires, she finally decides to take matters into her own hands. A long-retired Holmes (Ian McKellen) is living in a Sussex village, when he finds himself haunted by an unsolved 50-year old case. 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love - before it’s too late. A clever multi-layered script together with a superb McKellen performance make for a sleek and fresh Sherlock Holmes film which feels warm and more humane, moving away from the more modern takes on the Conan Doyle material. Inspired by the William Tell legend, Rossini’s outstanding final opera boasts one of the most instantly recognisable operatic overtures, whose dynamic finale later served as the Lone Ranger theme tune. Renowned for laying the foundations for the genre of French grand opera of the mid-19th century, ‘Guillaume Tell’ delivers a feast of glorious arias, choruses and ensembles. Exciting young Italian director Damiano Michieletto’s production reunites conductor Antonio Pappano with three of the stars of his much-admired recording: Gerald Finley, Malin Bystrom and John Osborn. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Approx 240m inc. 2 intervals.

In the Iranian ghost-town Bad City, the townspeople are unaware they are being stalked by a lonesome vampire. In a fictional Iranian ghost town, a reclusive creature of the night cloaked in a chador, the Girl (Shelia Vand), exsanguinates men. But when she meets Arash (Arash Marandi), a James Dean like figure with a pet cat, her killer instincts soften. Shot in black and white, the visuals are as striking as the original concept, and Vand illuminates the screen with a performance that seamlessly switches between stoicism and vulnerability. The first Iranian Vampire Western ever made, Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave. A complex, intimate, and highly idiosyncratic comedy, ‘Listen Up Philip’ is a literary look at the triumph of reality over the human spirit. Anger rages in Philip (Jason Schwartzman) as he awaits the publication of his sure-to-succeed second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley (Elisabeth Moss), and his indifference to promoting his own work. When Philip’s idol Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce) offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favourite subject - himself. There have been many films which heap a lot of praise on artists like this, but very few films like this one (‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ perhaps) that show the darker side of the creative mind. An aging rock star decides to change his life when he discovers a 40-year-old letter written to him by John Lennon. Al Pacino stars as aging 1970s rocker Danny Collins, who can’t give up his hard-living ways. ‘I would be friends with you’: Bonds of Love and Hate in The Merchant of Venice Talk by Páraic Finnerty This talk will consider the representation of love and hate in Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’, drawing on scenes and imagery from TV and cinematic adaptations of this controversial play, including Michael Radford’s 2004 version. It focuses on the play’s depiction of cross-dressing, same-sex friendship, and romantic love, and its problematic depiction and treatment of Shylock, which complicates a twenty-first-century audience’s response to this Shakespearean comedy. Páraic Finnerty is Reader in English and American Literature at the University of Portsmouth. The Wonders Le Meraviglie Rohrwacher’s (‘Corpo Celeste’) richly textured second feature centres on a family of beekeepers living in stark isolation in central Italy. A portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of ‘surfer band’ The Beach Boys. Set against the era defining catalogue of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost. In the 1960s, Brian Wilson (Paul Dano from ‘There Will Be Blood’ & ‘Little Miss Sunshine’) struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. We feel like we’re right there in the studio with him as he creates Pet Sounds. The moment we see Dano in the film’s daringly off-kilter opening shot, which is just Brian noodling around at the piano and talking to himself, the actor seems to transform into Wilson’s very being - this isn’t just acting, it’s channelling of a very high order. In the 1980s (now played by John Cusack), he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatty). This is a beautiful bio-pic about the creative process, that intangible thing artists try to express and aficionados try to understand. USA 2015 Bill Pohlad 120m

Les Enfants du Paradis Children of Paradise A classic produced under overwhelmingly difficult circumstances during the Nazi occupation of France, the movie’s existence itself is somewhat miraculous. No less than four men - a criminal, a Count, a mime, and an actor - fall for the enigmatic Garance (Arletty) amidst the turbulent backdrop of a seedy Paris theatre district in the early 1800s. When mime Baptiste enters the film, saving the beautiful Garance from being arrested by performing his silent eyewitness account to a police officer, you will be hooked… or better, you will be entranced. ‘Les Enfants du Paradis’ has gone on to become one of the great romantic classics of international cinema. The movie’s final parting sequence, where Arletty rides away in a coach and Barrault is inexorably swept in the opposite direction by a swirling crowd, is among the peaks of romantic cinema. Benjamin Britten’s extraordinarily tense and chilling treatment of this historic tale is explored in a brilliant production by Fiona Shaw, best known as an actress in films such as ‘Harry Potter’ and TV series including ‘True Blood’. Lucretia is a model of fidelity among Roman wives until the Etruscan prince Tarquinius, provoked by his Roman army comrades, gallops back to Rome to ruin her virtue. Described as ‘opera at its most nakedly powerful’ by the Daily Telegraph, this production live from the 2015 Glyndebourne Festival will be conducted by Leo Hussain and performed by some of the most exciting British singers on stage today, including Christine Rice, Kate Royal, Allan Clayton and Duncan Rock. The opera is in 2 acts with 1 interval, and sung in English, with subtitles. 155m approx inc. interval.

13 Minutes Elser Director of ‘Downfall’ Oliver Hirschbiegel returns with a film of similar subject matter - a breath-taking story of a man who nearly would have changed the world. The title refers to the amount of time which elapsed between the Führer (Udo Schenk) leaving the Munich hall where he was delivering a speech in November 1939 and the detonation of the bomb which had been planted there. The failed assassin, Georg Elser (Christian Friedel), is apprehended and hauled before the head of the criminal police, Arthur Nebe (Burghart Klaussner), and Gestapo chief Heinrich Mueller (Johann von Buelow. The film then flashes back and forth between his mounting unease at Hitler’s rise in the 1930s and his interrogation at the hands of the Gestapo. (subtitles) Germany 2015 Oliver Hirschbiegel 114m

A documentary on the late singer/songwriter, who died in 2011 after a short yet unforgettable career. Despite just two albums to her name Amy Winehouse is one of the biggest music icons in British history. With a voice oft described as a combination of Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, Amy Winehouse was a pop star with soul; a once in two generational musical talent whose appeal crossed cultural and demographic boundaries. But while her music made her a star, her chaotic personal life stole headlines. Stunningly moving and powerful: intimate, passionate, often shocking, and mesmerically absorbing. Kapadia’s (‘Senna’) ‘Amy’ premiered at Cannes in May this year, and has been hailed as one of the best documentaries of recent years. UK 2015 Asif Kapadia 90m

Sebastião Salgado’s life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last travels, and by Wim Wenders, himself a photographer. British New Wave Films - 1960's A three day film course (over 3 weeks) on the British New Wave Films of the 1960's. Many of the films of this genre have two main themes in common: class and its restrictions, and unwanted (or at least inconvenient) pregnancies. These films were considered gritty and many were set anywhere in Britain but London - Locations included Bradford, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Halifax and Bolton. Think of 'Billy Liar', 'A Kind of Loving', 'This Sporting Life', 'Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' and we have the genre explained. The course will be run by John Fitzpatrick (26 Jun) and Rosemary Coxon (3 & 10 Jul), both of which have had extensive careers in Education, and have a close association with Chichester Cinema at New Park.
