welcome to

Chichester Cinema Summer has arrived… bringing with it a feast of local Festivals and Events, as well as a little football tournament from across the channel. But we are here to tempt you away from all that! We partner with the Three Twinned Cities of Chichester Organizations (Chartres, Ravenna and Valletta) to bring you three films that best represent their respective countries. On offer throughout this season is a sunny and refreshing variety of cinema (don’t miss ‘Elvis & Nixon’, Maggie’s Plan’, ‘Embrace of the Serpent’, ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, ‘The Secret Life of Pets’) that will leave you primed for the 25th Chichester international Film Festival. Our Silver Jubilee Festival will kick off on the 5th and 6th August with two Open Air Screenings at Priory Park (‘Calamity Jane’ and ‘Finding Dory’), followed by our first ever Drive-In on the 7th at Oaklands Car Park (‘Casablanca’). See you at the Cinema

Knight of Cups

Booking Ref

Terrence Malick’s latest mystical marvel stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman and many more. The film opens with a recording of John Gielgud reciting ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’, before a narrator (Brian Dennehy) recounts the tale of a knight who drinks from a cup that puts him to asleep. ‘Knight of Cups’ is part confessional, part Hollywood insider, part midlife crisis, part family melodrama ‑ it finds Christian Bale’s screenwriter drifting back through his memories to revisit former romances and family issues. In the 18 years since ‘The Thin Red Line’, Malick’s films become increasingly abstract meditations on themes ranging from creation (‘Tree of Life’) to the nature of love (‘To the Wonder’). His elusive wanderings are not to everybody’s taste, but find the film’s pulse and you will be seduced by its gorgeous, meandering beauty. USA 2016 Terence Malick 118m

Sing Street Director John Carney (‘Once’) takes us back to 1980s Dublin, seen through the eyes of 14‑year‑old Conor (Ferdia Walsh‑Peelo). Conor is looking for a break from a home strained by his parents’ troubles, while trying to adjust to his inner‑city school where the kids are rough, and teachers rougher. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, über‑cool Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and to win her heart, he invites her to star in his band’s music videos. There is only one problem: he is not part of a band... yet. ‘Sing Street’ shows us a world where music has the power to take us away from the turmoil of everyday life and transform us into something greater. It reminds us of being young and lost in a song, realizing with a jolt that someone else had the same feelings we did. Ireland 2016 John Carney 106m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Based on Jane Austen’s posthumously published novel ‘Lady Susan’, this is both fresh and deliciously evil in equal measures. Set in the opulent drawing rooms of eighteenth‑century English society, and focussing on the machinations of a beautiful widow, Lady Susan Vernon, who, while waiting for social chatter about a personal indiscretion to pass, takes up temporary residence at her in‑laws’ estate. A very refreshing take on Austen’s work. UK 2016 Whit Stillman 93m

Four outsiders in the world of high‑finance who predicted the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid‑2000s decide to take on the big banks. This Oscar & BAFTA winning film follows three groups of people (including Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt) who foresaw the crisis to come, and bet huge amounts of money against the banks, thus somewhat guiltily making fortunes for themselves as much of America found itself broke. Based on a Nick Hornby screenplay, this is the moving story of a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. Look out for Emory Cohen’s breakout performance as Eilis’ American flame. Fate, the pensions crisis and a steadfast refusal to accept the injustice of old age have contrived to force law abiding, retired couple, Arthur (Bernard Hill) and Martha Goode (Virginia McKenna) into a life of crime. Refusing to take the loss of their pensions lying down and to fade away into their declining years, our characters decide to fight back. They decide to take back what was theirs in the first place. They decide to start robbing banks. Arthur inadvertently robs a security guard, then continues his spree after he realises he’s due it all really and he can bail out similarly disenfranchised pals – including Simon Callow as a Welsh am‑dram aficionado and Una Stubbs as his sex‑starved missus. ‘Breaking Bad’ meets ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, this fun film features a great cast and picturesque English countryside photography. Great performances, brilliant writing and a thumping soundtrack, make Linklater’s latest film a delight from start-to-finish. On the heels of his success with the ground-breaking drama ‘Boyhood’, Linklater shifts gears for this comedy about a successful college baseball team that plays hard both on and off the diamond. It is another star-free, period drama that perfectly recreates the spirit of the times. The soundtrack and the production design are spot-on. The year 1980, like student life, is all about transition. The clothes and the cars are still stuck in the 70s but electronica, hip-hop and glam metal are beginning to make their first inroads into radio playlists. The sun may be setting on the last days of disco, but these fun-loving sportsmen are determined not to miss a beat. USA 2016 Richard Linklater 117m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Jonas Kaufmann: An Evening with Puccini The world’s greatest tenor brings the beauty and power of Puccini to New Park Cinema. Shot on location in Italy, the film features his critically acclaimed Puccini concert from La Scala, and includes all of Puccini’s most loved tenor arias including ‘Nessun dorma’. The cameras also go behind the scenes and follow Jonas around Milan as he talks about what it takes to be the world’s greatest tenor and why Puccini’s music is so special to him. “No aria is as loved today as ‘Nessun dorma’. The legendary Three Tenors took place only a few days before my twenty-first birthday, and for a long time I didn’t dare sing it myself, since I was so in awe of the aria’s magic and its incredible appeal.” 130m

Leonardo Da Vinci: The Genius in Milan

Booking Ref

A unique journey through the life and work of the Renaissance master. In spring 2015 Milan paid tribute to Leonardo da Vinci by holding an extraordinary exhibition event at the Palazzo Reale. ‘Leonardo Da Vinci: The Genius in Milan’ explores his work as never seen before, telling the story of the artist’s world and the treasures he left us. Pietro Marani, the curator of the 2015 exhibition, and some of the world’s leading experts on Leonardo tell a story that could open new perspectives and reveal extraordinary things about Leonardo Da Vinci the painter, sculptor, scientist, anatomist, botanist and architect. New light is also shed on the mystery of Leonardo’s life in Milan, where he spent eighteen years at the end of the fifteenth century. 90m

Breaking the Bank

Booking Ref

Sir Charles Bunberry (Kelsey Grammer) has a heart of gold, and is the accidental president of a family‑run London bank. With ruthless investment banks circling Tuftons, a struggling two‑hundred‑year‑old, family‑run British bank, its bumbling, incompetent chairman must fend off the onslaught and save the bank? In the oak‑lined board room, we find a gaggle of bumbling London curmudgeons who haven’t the faintest clue how to run Tuftons, especially the man in the big swivel chair. A sports‑minded blue blood who conveniently married money in the form of Penelope Tufton (a superbly acidic Tamsin Greig), he keeps out of harm’s way on the golf course or behind the ping pong table. America’s celebrated ‘Frasier’, sports a very credible British accent, and delivers some terrific one‑liners, mainly heard in his barbed exchanges with co‑star Greig. UK 2016 Vadim Jean 98m

A man returns home to discover a long-buried family secret and attempts to make things right in this re-imagining of Henrik Ibsen’s ‘The Wild Duck’. The story sits between two families: businessman Henry (Geoffrey Rush) and his new, much younger wife Anna (Anna Torv); and the working class Walter (Sam Neill), whose son (Ewen Leslie) works in Henry’s logging factory, and his teacher wife (Miranda Otto). Into this scenery arrives Henry’s son Christian whose volatile emotional state acts as a catalyst: old injuries are inflamed, and secrets are uncovered. Ibsen’s themes and concerns dominate the action – gender, class, inheritance, deception – but are set off by a familiarly Australian environment. The film works beautifully due to its artful interweaving and overlapping of sound and image, its masterful construction of tension, and its naturalistic performances from the stellar cast. An affecting and unexpectedly funny tale of two lovers who had the misfortune to come of age during the burgeoning HIV crisis of the 1980’s. Adapted from Timothy Conigrave’s 1995 memoir, two Melbourne schoolboys (Ryan Corr and Craig Stott) defy their parents and Catholic schooling to fall in love. Armfield’s compassionate, even‑handed film might be a paean to young love, but it is also a time capsule of an era that felt frighteningly apocalyptic. Australia 2015 Neil Armfield 127m

Taking the lead in one of his own films for the first time, the actor‑director Podalydes here plays a postal plane‑obsessed 50‑something who finds himself drawn to kayaking simply because the wooden skeleton of a kayak looks like an old‑fashioned plane’s wing. But his voyage on his “wingless plane” ‑ the more evocative French title refers to a 1981 hit song from Charlelie Couture that translates as “Like a Plane Without Wings” ‑ isn’t about taking off so much as floating downstream on a picturesque brook in the countryside, not necessarily in control of the current. Critically acclaimed, this ‘Escape’ stands a good chance of being hailed as one of this year’s most noteworthy French movies. France 2015 Bruno Podalydes 105m

The story of a Jewish prisoner working for the Nazis called Saul (Géza Röhrig), at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in October 1944. We rarely leave Saul’s point of view, creating the feel of one long tracking shot. Early on, Saul spots a dying boy surrounded by Nazi doctors who he believes to be his son. Finding a Rabbi to arrange a proper burial becomes Saul’s obsession, and perhaps a way to keep his mind from the monstrous daily tasks he is forced to commit by the Nazi soldiers. This striking portrait of female empowerment was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the BAFTAs, Oscars and Golden Globes. Five free-spirited teenaged sisters innocently splash about on the beach with their male classmates, when a neighbour passes by and reports what she considers to be illicit behaviour to the girls’ family. The family overreacts, removing all “instruments of corruption,” like cell phones and computers, and essentially imprisoning the girls, subjecting them to preparation for them to become brides. Each sister has a distinct personality and relationship with the other four, varying levels of determination and her own reasons for wanting to escape, which allows Ergüven to explore the scenario’s several possible outcomes, be it happy ending or tragedy or the bittersweet fates in between. Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach

A funny, provocative and revealing account of the life and career of one of Britain’s foremost filmmakers, Ken Loach, as he turns eighty and looks back at over fifty years of filmmaking. Loach is a director known for his naturalistic, social realist directing style, always evident in his treatment of issues such as homelessness and labour rights. Unlike virtually all his contemporaries, he has never succumbed to the siren call of Hollywood, and it’s virtually impossible to imagine his particular brand of British socialist realism translating well to that context. From ‘Poor Cow’ (1967) and ‘Kes’ (1969) in his early years, to the more recent ‘The Wind that Shakes the Barley’ (2006) and ‘Looking for Eric’ (2007) he has proved to be one of the most consistent directors of our age. When Tom is jailed for theft, Joy is left on her own, until Tom’s best friend Dave (Terence Stamp) invites her to stay with him. Dave is warm and caring in a way that Tom is not, and love begins to blossom between them. The controversial story of how Le Corbusier effaced and defaced Eileen Gray’s moral right to be recognized as the author of her work and as one of the most forceful and influential inspirations of a century of modern architecture and design. Irish architect and furniture designer Eileen Gray (1878–1976) was a leading light in the modern design movement. This graceful portrayal of her later life and work in France focusses on the triangle of tension between Gray (Orla Brady), her lover Badovici (Francesco Scianna) and Le Corbusier (Vincent Perez). Gray designed a house for Badovici on the French Riviera in 1920’s, but it was later “vandalized” by the legendary Swiss-born architect Le Corbusier, who overpainted her pristine white minimalism with garish sub-Picasso murals. To learn what the USA can learn from other nations, Michael Moore playfully “invades” them to see what they have to offer. This is a rib‑tickling, and subversive comedy in which Moore, playing the role of “invader,” visits a host of nations to learn how the U.S. could improve its own prospects. Turns out the solutions to America’s most entrenched problems already existed in the world ‑ they are just waiting to be co‑opted. This is a blisteringly funny movie, with positive social reforms on display but take it with a huge grain of salt because it is a liberal fantasy from an idealist desperate for answers. For anyone who has never seen a Michael Moore (‘Fahrenheit 9/11’ and ‘Bowling for Columbine’) film and wants the entire experience at once ‑ it is all here. The untold true story behind the meeting between the King of Rock ‘n Roll and President Nixon. On a December morning in 1970, the King of Rock ‘n Roll (Michael Shannon) showed up on the lawn of the White House to request a meeting with the most powerful man in the world, President Nixon (Kevin Spacey). This revealing, yet humorous moment in the Oval Office was forever immortalized in the most requested photograph in the National Archives. The dialogue sparkles with gems of historical allusion and perceptive asides, and the actors virtually sing it; the film plays like a whirling socio‑political operetta, and at a zippy 86 minutes, it provides a rare experience. Embrace of the Serpent El Abrazo de la Serpiente The encounter, betrayal and life-affirming friendship between an Amazonian shaman (last survivor of his people) and two foreign scientists. Karamakate (Nilbio Torres and Antonio Bolivar) is a Shaman who lives by himself in an ultra-remote corner of the Amazon, since his tribe has been wiped out by white rubber barons. One day a canoe approaches carrying German anthropologist Theo (Jan Bijvoet), and his loyal travelling companion, ex-Amazonian slave Manduca (Yauenku Migue). Shot in stunningly effective black-and-white, it captures the grandeur of the rain forest and the earthiness of Karamakate’s world. Spirituality is central to that world, and he has all sorts of mind-bending herbs (and philosophies) at his disposal. Gripping and engrossing from beginning to end. A seriously good film! Notes on Blindness It is often said that the loss of sight can lead to a heightened acuity in the other senses. In the case of the academic and theologian John Hull, who lost his sight the summer of 1983, just days before the birth of his first son, it wasn’t just his other senses which sharpened, but his already brilliant mind. In order to make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began keeping a diary on audiocassette. Upon their publication in 1990, Oliver Sacks described the work as ‘the most extraordinary, deep and beautiful account of blindness I have ever read. It is to my mind a masterpiece.’ Hull’s wisdom, and the agility of his insights as he struggles to make sense of his condition, form the basis of this elegant and deeply affecting documentary. Jimmy’s Hall At 79 years of age, Ken Loach has just been awarded the Palme D’Or for his most recent film ‘I, Daniel Blake’. Here is his 2015 warm, human and deeply engaging film about Irish activist Jimmy Gralton. In 1921, Gralton’s (Barry Ward) sin was to build a dance hall in an Ireland on the brink of Civil War. It was a place where young people could come to learn, to argue, to dream... but above all, to dance and have fun. As the hall grew in popularity, its socialist and free-spirited reputation brought it to the attention of the church and politicians who forced Jimmy to flee to America, and the hall to close. When he returns 10 years later, not everybody is glad to see him. UK 2015 Ken Loach 109m See pg29 for the Ken Loach documentary ‘Versus’ and his 1967 film ‘Poor Cow’.

Tale of Tales Il Racconto dei Racconti Toby Jones, Salma Hayek and Vincent Cassel star in this most faithful and creatively rendered fairy tale to date. Once upon a time, there were three neighbouring kingdoms each with a magnificent castle, from which ruled kings and queens, princes and princesses. One king was a fornicating libertine, another captivated by a strange animal, while one of the queens was obsessed by her wish for a child. Sorcerers and fairies, ogres and acrobats are the protagonists of this loose interpretation of the celebrated tales of Giambattista Basile. Garrone’s previous films (including mafia film ‘Gomorrah’) have not hinted at the sort of playful, mischievous whimsy found here. Bizarrely satisfying and totally worth a focused viewing. Chevalier A deadpan comedy of manners, morals and “men behaving weirdly”. In the middle of the Aegean Sea, on a luxury yacht, six men on a fishing trip decide to play a game. During this game, things will be compared, measured and blood will be tested. Friends will become rivals, but at the end of the voyage, when the game is over, the winner will wear the victorious signet ring: the “Chevalier”. The individual challenges range from the farcically mundane (an IKEA flat‑pack assembly race on the prow of the yacht) to the more invasively intimate, as the men verbally arouse each other to compare “sizes”. Gorgeously shot almost exclusively within the confines of the boat, ‘Chevalier’ joins Roman Polanski’s ‘Knife in the Water’ in the small pantheon of movies that wield that setting to their advantage. The Stanford Prison Experiment

Booking Ref

Based on the real-life research of Dr. Zimbardo (who was a consultant on the film), this is a dramatic period piece that remains relevant over 40 years later. In 1971, a professor at California’s Stanford University held an experiment, involving white, male students assuming the roles of guards and prisoners, for a study on the effects of incarceration on human behaviour. We see the selected students role-playing, with undergrads assigned as guards revealing a latent knack for sadism and intimidating their bewildered, unnerved charges. Billy Crudup is darkly enigmatic as the experiment-setter Philip Zimbardo, looking on with unseemly enthrallment as the drama gets real. An at times upsetting film about our true nature, ‘The Stanford Prison Experiment’ is full of great performances, particularly from Michael Angarano and Ezra Miller. Not only a brilliant observer of everyday life and Spain’s troubled past, Goya took the genre of portraiture to new heights. Influenced by Rembrandt and Velázquez, Goya explored a new realism where he did not flatter and was not afraid to reveal what he saw physically and psychologically. Yet this did not stop him securing major commissions from powerful individuals, who were subjected to his highly modern approach that captured rapid changes of expression, gesture and emotion. Renoir – The Unknown Artist

From the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia Renoir is one of the most fiercely debated artists, and yet one of the most influential. Pierre-Auguste Renoir is known and loved for his impressionist paintings of Paris. These paintings count among the world’s favourites. Renoir, however, grew tired of this style and changed course. This stunning film – based on the remarkable collection of 181 Renoirs at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia – examines the direction he then took and why it provokes such extreme reactions right up to today. Some claim they are repulsed by Renoir’s later works and some claim they are seduced. What may surprise many is that among the many artists who sought Renoir’s new works out and were clearly highly influenced by them were the two giants of the 20th century – Picasso and Matisse. What Makes a Great Film Great?

Booking Ref

Day Course by Richard Cupidi Why do some films become classics and others simply fade away…? What determines whether today’s box‑office success will end up in tomorrow’s charity bin or embedded in our collective memory…? We are delighted to welcome back film tutor Richard Cupidi, who ran the very successful day course ‘Openings and Closings: how films invite us in ‑ and out’ back in February, and who will lead this stimulating and interactive day course examining how we can better appreciate why some films are regarded as ‘classic’ films in the history of cinema. We will begin by compiling a template for film greatness. Then, as a way of exploring the extraordinarily diverse forms that greatness comes in, we will look closely at two acknowledged classics ‑ Citizen Kane & Casablanca. These movies will also help us reflect on the cinematic elements that go into the creation of any great film: script, direction, editing, acting, cinematography and, that most unpredictable of ingredients, film magic. Everyone welcome.
