BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
OUISTREHAM Juliette Binoche goes undercover in the gig economy to probe the injustices faced by low-paid workers. Originally screened at New Park as a preview with great success at the 2021 French Film Festival UK. Juliette Binoche stars as an author who, inspired by George Orwell’s ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’, goes undercover as a cleaning lady in the northern French port of Caen to research a book on job insecurity and social precariousness. Desperate applicants have to burnish their CVs with fatuous assurances about how passionate they are about cleaning, in return for dehumanising work with pitiful pay, grisly conditions and no job security. Although Binoche is the film’s star, her presence is smartly muted, allowing us time and space to discover the world as she does, and providing room for complexity in considering the ethics of his character’s work and of Carrère’s film itself. DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA
The much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa. Fans will be delighted to know that all the main cast will be back for the Downton Abbey sequel, including Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, and Elizabeth McGovern. There’s a birth, a death, a proposal, and a spot of disputed paternity, with all loose ends tied as neatly as if Mr Carson himself had attended to them. There are also some genuine chuckles, and a few shamelessly derivative storylines, with especially firm nods to ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’. Writer Fellowes gives us an affectionate group hug, which is effectively what these encore visits amount to. UK/USA 2022 SIMON CURTIS 126M 4 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

SWAN SONG
After learning of his former client’s dying wish for him to style her final hairdo, retired hairdresser Pat embarks on an odyssey to confront the ghosts of his past. ‘Swan Song’ is appointment viewing for fans of Udo Kier, who gives a career-best turn as a retired hairdresser making peace with the past. He’s Pat Pitsenbarger, a long-ago retired beautician now housed in a sad, green-walled nursing home in Ohio, withering away his days sneaking cigarettes when the nurses aren’t looking, and ruminating over his past life. The journey into his past presents Pat with former friends and places from his life that are in turns funny poignant and camp. Kier gets the role of his lifetime as a fabulously snarky, acerbic, long-retired hairdresser. US 2021 TODD STEPHENS 105M

HAUT ET FORT Lauded by Mark Kermode as one of the best films of the year, Nabil Ayouch’s grittily authentic tale focuses on a rapper turned teacher helping his students find their creative voices is a class act. Anas, a former rapper, is employed in a cultural centre. Encouraged by their new teacher, the students try to free themselves from the weight of traditions to live their passion and express themselves through hip hop culture. Working with non-professionals playing semi-fictionalised characters, there’s a raw authenticity here, which, combined with close, kinetic camerawork and overlapping dialogue, attaches thrilling momentum to the students’ workshops. The film never suggests rap music will be a way out of difficult situations, but that it helps those with struggles cope. That it offers no answers to big questions is to its credit, making ‘Casablanca Beats’ an ode to expression itself. (Subtitles) FRANCE/MOROCCO 2021 NABIL AYOUCH 101M BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 5

ALL MY FRIENDS HATE ME
Pete is cautiously excited about reuniting with his college crew for a birthday weekend. But, one by one, his friends slowly turn against him. Is he being punished, is he paranoid, or is he part of some sick joke? The story hinges on a simple notion about the unnatural forces that might compel a 31-year-old neurotic like Pete to keep even his most toxic college friendships on life support: he’s mortified about the man he used to be, but the only people who can let him off the hook are the ones who knew him back then. They’re the only ones who might be able to appreciate how much he’s changed. A funny, horrible, ordeal-by-comedy that may prove uncomfortably recognizable to anyone who has ever wondered why on earth every single other person in the room is behaving like such an idiot. LUZZU
A moving portrait of a world in flux, and one man attempting to survive the changes thrust upon him by a baffling outside world. A hardworking Maltese fisherman, Jesmark, is faced with an agonizing choice. He can repair his leaky luzzu – a traditional, multicoloured wooden fishing boat – in the hopes of eking out a meagre living at sea for his wife and newborn son, just as his father and grandfather did before him. Or he can decommission it in exchange for an EU pay out and cast his lot with a sinister black-market operation that is decimating the Mediterranean fish population and the livelihoods of the local families who depend on it. An authentic and affecting depiction of an ordinary man struggling to exist in a modern and corrupt world. (Subtitles) USA/MALTA 2021 ALEX CAMILLERI 94M 6 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

STRAIGHT LINE CRAZY
NT LIVE After sell-out screenings at New Park, this is a final chance to see Ralph Fiennes star in David Hare’s blazing account of the life of a man whose iron will exposed the weakness of democracy in the face of charismatic conviction. For forty uninterrupted years, Robert Moses (Fiennes) was the most powerful man in New York. Though never elected to office, he manipulated those who were through a mix of guile, charm and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s workers, he created new parks, new bridges and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors. But in the 1950s, groups of citizens at grass roots began to organize against his schemes and against the motor car, campaigning for a very different idea of what a city was and for what it should be. Directed by Nicholas Hytner at The Bridge. ‘Straight Line Crazy’ reunites Fiennes, Hare and Hytner who previously collaborated on ‘Beat the Devil at The Bridge’ in Autumn 2020. 180M APPROX INC INTERVAL

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN
To accompany the British Golf Open’s 150th edition at St Andrews, we bring back the story of a dreamer and unrelenting optimist, who manages to gain entry to The Open Golf Championship and subsequently shoots the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process. Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance of ‘Bridge of Spies’ and ‘The Outfit’) is 46 years old and living with his wife Jean (Sally Hawkins) and their sons. He is also facing redundancy, after years of working as a shipyard crane-operator. By chance, he catches the end of the British Open, witnessing the triumph of Tom Watson. He decides to join his local golf club, and his innocence/ignorance allows him to exploit a loophole in the admissions process for the British Open. And shockingly – there he is, doing his humble strut on the world stage, smiling anxiously as his official (lack of) credentials are announced. A gorgeously acted film with slapstick humour that will make you cry with laughter. The film we have all been craving for after the past two years. DOCTOR WHO CLASSIC MOVIE DOUBLE BILL Peter Cushing leads the fight against the frightful Daleks in two classic movies shown here as a double bill. These films are timely reminders that the ever-impressive Daleks are truly one of science fiction’s greatest alien creations. Dr. Who and the Daleks: Not only does this film have a sound moral, but also a quaint Flash Gordon charm because of its fanciful sets, Cushing, Hammer’s reliable Baron Frankenstein, is properly whimsical, and Gordon Flemyng’s amiable direction wisely avoids camp. ERIC RAVILIOUS: DRAWN TO WAR
FOCUS ON FILM
This is the first full-length feature documentary about Eric Ravilious, told in his own words through previously unseen private correspondence, made with the blessing of the Ravilious estate. One of Britain’s greatest landscape artists, Eric Ravilious, is killed in a plane crash while on commission as Official War Artist in Iceland in 1942. His life was as compelling and enigmatic as his art, set against the dramatic wartime locations that inspired him. This film brings to life this unique and still grossly undervalued British artist caught in the crossfire of war 80 years ago, whose legacy largely sank without trace, until now. The film asks what it is to be a war artist, featuring Ai Weiwei, Alan Bennett, Grayson Perry and many more, to be released in his 80th anniversary year. UK 2022 MARGY KINMONTH 88M

GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE
Retired widow Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson) hires a goodlooking young sex worker, Leo Grande, in the hope of enjoying a night of pleasure and self-discovery after an unfulfilling married life. Emma Thompson plays Nancy, a middle-aged widow and former RE teacher who, after a lifetime of unsatisfying conjugal relations with just the one man (her late husband), has decided to pay for discreet afternoon sex in an upmarket Norwich hotel room. Leo looks every bit as good as his picture, but what Nancy wasn’t expecting was conversation as well as fornication. Leo has a view on everything, and though he may not always tell the truth, Nancy finds she likes him. And he likes her. While it would be incredibly easy for a film like this to sink into the void of just being an average comedy, the final result here is something remarkable. USA 2022 SOPHIE HYDE 97M

The pair have struggled to communicate with each other for much of Artemis’s life and now, as her father deteriorates, she must face their fragile relationship head-on. Her seclusion at her father’s home leads to the discovery of his well-hidden secrets. As she delves into this newfound information, she begins to see him in a new light and love him as the father she never knew. A captivating and painful film about repressed trauma that explores miscommunication as a basis for understanding family relationships. MANDARIINID The Oscar-nominated film about Georgian farmers caught up in a bloody civil war won the audience award for best film at the 2015 Chichester International Film Festival. Set in 1992, in the post-Soviet Caucasus, where Georgians are fighting a war with secessionist Abkhazians, backed by Russia. Ivo (Lembit Ulfsak) is an elderly ethnic Estonian who, with his friend Margus (Elmo Nüganen), is a tangerine farmer; they fear the fighting will destroy their entire crop. Disaster strikes, and Ivo finds himself having to offer tense hospitality to one wounded fighter from each side. It is tremendous storytelling: engaging, intelligent, and with some lovely touches. The wonderful, sensitive ‘Tangerines’ is a plea for tolerance – an appeal which should always be heard. It is a must-see. LOVE ME TENDER
During the last days of the American Civil War, a gang of Confederate soldiers hijack a Union payroll. The pursuit that follows is destined to set brother against brother and tear a loving family apart. When 20th Century-Fox made a cheap CinemaScope western called ‘The Reno Brothers’, they couldn’t have foreseen how one lucky stroke of casting would recoup their production costs within three days of the film’s release. For, as younger brother Clint Reno, rock ‘n’ roll sensation Elvis Presley made his screen debut, and the title of the movie was changed to that of his ballad. Although third-billed, Elvis is a natural and effortlessly steals the film. There’s a marvellous mid-section where the whole plot stops to give audiences a taste of the singin’ sensation in his prime, as Elvis performs ‘Let Me’ and ‘Poor Boy’. USA 1956 ROBERT D. WEBB 89M

PSYCHO
Few films have the distinction of changing cinema but Hitchcock’s sublime thriller is one of them. Presented in a new 4K restoration on the big screen – this is too good an opportunity to miss. “We all go a little mad sometimes” says Anthony Perkins’s Norman Bates, one of cinema’s greatest screen villains. Janet Leigh is the office worker on the run with the company’s takings and finding refuge at the Bates Motel. The iconic shower scene occurring just 47 minutes into the film could have led to a succession of anticlimaxes, instead the tension ratches up in a series of classic sequences. ‘Psycho’ birthed a number of subgenres including the slasher movie. It also introduced fixed start times for movies as Hitchcock did not allow anyone to be admitted after the start of the film. USA 1960 ALFRED HITCHCOCK 109M BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 15

Princess Diana’s story is told exclusively through contemporaneous archive creating a bold and immersive narrative of her life and death. Turning the camera back on ourselves, it illuminates the profound impact Diana had and how the public’s attitude to the monarchy was, and still is, shaped by these events. Beginning in early 1981 at her engagement, it is an eery experience to watch what develops knowing what we know now. This is an untelling of the Diana story that is spellbinding in its deconstruction of the myth. The use of nothing but archival footage to recount Diana’s rise, her perpetual “trial by television” and her fall isn’t a gimmick – it’s a stroke of genius, a jujitsu finishing move on her tormentors. He was a pianist, leaving school at 15 to work as a ‘song plugger’, and his music ranged from his biggest success ‘Swanee’ (1919) to his commercial failure ‘Porgy and Bess’ (1935). His influences were Ravel, Debussy, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and other classical musicians. We will visit his Hollywood original scores, ‘Delicious’, ‘Shall We Dance’ and ‘A Damsel in Distress’, as well as his orchestral music including ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and ‘An American in Paris’. Gershwin’s composing career spanned Spanish Flu, Prohibition and the Great American Depression, and he believed that “true music must reflect the thought and aspirations of the people and time. My people are Americans. My time is today.” 90M

Ry Cooder brought together a group of legendary Cuban musicians to record a CD. A joyous tribute to a group of humble but true artists. This documentary by lauded German filmmaker Wim Wenders follows renowned guitarist Ry Cooder and his son, Joachim, as they travel to Cuba and assemble a group of the country’s finest musicians to record an album. Among the artists included in the project are singer Ibrahim Ferrer and pianist Rubén González, who are both interviewed and featured in studio footage. Eventually the ensemble travels to the United States to perform in front of rapt audiences. The music is incredible enough on its own – but the lives and the culture behind it, that’s what makes this documentary a must-see. GERMANY/USA 1999 WIM WENDERS 105M 20 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

EVERYTHING WENT FINE
TOUT S’EST BIEN PASSÉ André Dussollier and Sophie Marceau are outstanding as a father and daughter whose tricky relationship is upended when he asks for her help to die. After André has a severe stroke and with the grudging support of her younger sister Pascal, Emmanuèle begins sorting through the complicated processes and bureaucratic hurdles necessary to fulfill her father’s request. What ensues is a more tricky period of negotiation, heavy on the banal practicalities of ending a life, revealing much gallows humour amid the rougher emotional labor. Complicated family baggage also emerges in the process. Director François Ozon avoids melodrama, focusing on people going through their lives day to day. Thanks to the accomplished cast and sophisticated approach, the emotions are there, but they don’t overwhelm the story. (Subtitles FRANCE/BELGIUM 2021 FRANÇOIS OZON 112M

THE RAILWAY CHILDREN
ORIGINAL 1970 VERSION After the enforced absence of their father, three children move with their mother to Yorkshire, where, during their adventures, they attempt to discover the reason for his disappearance. After Charles Waterbury is imprisoned on false charges of selling state secrets, his wife must move to a small house near a railway station. The Waterbury children – Bobbie, Phyllis and Peter – occupy themselves watching the trains, even befriending a gentleman who frequents the station. When the children discover what has happened to their father, their new friend provides key assistance. Directed by Lionel Jeffries, this adaptation of E Nesbit’s much-loved novel is simply the finest children’s film ever made in this country and bound to whet your appetite for ‘The Railway Children Return’. THE RAILWAY CHILDREN RETURN
Jenny Agutter and Sheridan Smith star in the sequel to the classic film. The sequel, which comes more than 50 years after the original film, was announced in May, with Jenny Agutter set to reprise her role as Roberta ‘Bobbie’ Waterbury, alongside turns from Sheridan Smith, Tom Courtenay, and a new generation of Railway Children. The film will take audiences on an exciting and heart-warming journey, in which a group of children are evacuated to a Yorkshire village during World War 2, where they encounter a young soldier, who like them, is far away from home… ‘The Railway Children Return’ is helmed by BAFTA-winning director Morgan Matthews and was shot at several of the iconic locations used in the first film, including Haworth, The Bronte Parsonage, Oakworth station and several railways on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. To complement the release of this new film, we have also programmed two rare bigscreen performances of the original 1970 Lionel Jeffries film. UK 2022 MORGAN MATTHEWS BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 23

NITRAM
The highly unsettling story of events leading up to Tasmania’s Port Arthur massacre perpetrated by Martin Bryant. Nitram is Martin spelled backwards. Seeking to explain the inexplicable, director Justin Kurzel asks viewers to face a gut-wrenchingly grim moment in Australian history – but rewards that effort with a gripping, well-acted character study. Kurzel’s bold, daring choice – to avoid painting Bryant as either a pathetic punchbag or a monster – is the film’s greatest gamble and merit. With all its complicated efforts to both humanize and problematize its protagonist, Nitram doesn’t parcel out an apology, but something far more sinister and provocative. It blurs the distance between shooter and audience, triggering that most frightening of questions: what if it could happen to one of us, too? AUSTRALIA 2021 JUSTIN KURZEL 112M

BRIAN AND CHARLES
After a particularly harsh winter, Brian goes into a deep depression; completely alone and with no one to talk to, he does what any sane person would do when faced with such a melancholic situation and builds a robot. ‘Charles’ is not only Brian’s most successful invention, but he appears to have a personality all of his own and quickly becomes Brian’s best friend, curing his loneliness and opening Brian’s eyes to a new way of living. However, Charles creates more problems than Brian bargained for. This humorous and inventive story of Brian and Charles sticks because it is so original yet familiar. It doesn’t need high-profile actors, names, and places to strike a chord because it is a high-five to the unsung, unappreciated underdog. UK 2022 JIM ARCHER 90M 24 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

ELVIS – A TRIBUTE TO THE KING
KING CREOLE
Directed by Michael Curtiz (‘Casablanca’) this is a superior Elvis vehicle that showcases the singer’s easy charm, great songs and screen presence. Elvis plays a teenager named Danny Fisher, who is forced to drop out of school to help support his ineffective father (Dean Jagger). Drawn to trouble like a magnet, Danny is saved from a jail term by New Orleans saloonkeeper Charlie Le Grand (Paul Stewart), who gives the boy a job as a singer. It isn’t long, however, before local gang boss Maxie Fields (Walter Matthau), a shadowy figure from Danny’s criminal past, puts the muscle on the boy, insisting that Danny sing at his establishment. This was the King’s favourite role and arguably the pinnacle of his film career at the age of 23. USA 1958 MICHAEL CURTIZ 116M

GET CARTER
When his brother dies under mysterious circumstances in a car accident, London gangster Jack Carter travels to Newcastle to investigate. A splendid 4K restoration approved by director Mike Hodges makes for a timely revisit of this gangster movie classic. Convinced that his brother was murdered, Carter questions local thug Eric (Ian Hendry), who eventually leads him to kingpin Kinnear. From there, Carter carves a bloody trail of revenge through the seedy underbelly of Newcastle in search of his brother’s killer. Caine’s performance as Jack Carter has gone on to become the epitome of cool, with his measured and ruthless portrayal of a man consumed with revenge. An unforgettably sleazy, slimy and nasty blend of Loachian working class realism and brutal gangster aesthetic. UK 1971 MIKE HODGES 111M 26 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

AUDIENCE AWARD – FESTIVAL 2021
THE COLLINI CASE
A young lawyer stumbles upon a vast conspiracy while investigating a brutal murder case in this gripping time-twisty adaptation of Ferdinand von Schirach’s bestselling novel. In Berlin, just three months after passing the bar, lawyer Caspar Leinen (Elyas M’Barek) agrees to defend ageing Italian murderer Fabrizio Collini (Franco Nero). In an unfortunate coincidence, Collini’s victim is German entrepreneur Hans Meyer (Manfred Zapatka), who was like a dad to Caspar growing up. To make matters worse, his legal opponent is his former professor, Dr Mattinger (Heiner Lauterbach). There’s a lot of dense plot and legal jargon to compress, but punchy editing ensures the film remains fast-paced and light on its feet. Unyielding suspense, a noteworthy theme about justice and unjust laws, very professional production elements and a history lesson make ‘The Collini Case’ thoughtfully absorbing cinema. Blanco, the charismatic owner of a family-run factory, is under pressure as he covets a local award for business excellence. Everything needs to be perfect! But the veneer of the perfect company cracks as Blanco has to deal with a vengeful fired worker, a depressed supervisor, and an infatuated ambitious intern. To win the competition, the manipulative “good boss” shamelessly meddles in his employees’ private lives and crosses every line imaginable, unknowingly starting an explosive chain reaction with wild consequences.
