Ruby Tuesdays – Milestones of the Past 40 Years: 1979-2019

From February through to December on each first and third Tuesdays of the month, we will be screening milestones and highlights of specific years in our Cinema history. In most cases we will be charging an admission price of £2 reflecting the original ticket price in our first few years as a film society. This season we will be showcasing films representing: my start at the cinema in 2003; the cinema’s partnership with Europa Cinemas; the various auditorium upgrades; and our first open-air screening (look out for this year’s OpenAir Screenings in the centre pages). Look out also for a Special Event on 23 June, where we screen Abel Gance’s epic ‘Napoleon’ (pg19).

Glyndebourne makes a welcome return this Summer with three events, including live transmissions of ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Magic Flute’. Coupled with the two Met Opera encores, we are delighted to offer such a strong selection of Opera.

From the National Theatre, ‘Small Island’ is a true highlight, based on Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning novel, alongside one of the best reviewed productions of recent times, the Sam Mendes directed ‘The Lehman Trilogy’. D-Day 75th Anniversary Commemoration To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings (6th June 1944), we present what many consider to be the definitive D-Day film.

The film takes in the entire invasion, told on a grand scale from both the Allied and German points of view. The cast includes a who’s who of the time, many of these actually serving during World War II, including Henry Fonda, Leo Genn, Kenneth More and Rod Steiger. The most remarkable being Richard Todd who was among the first British officers to land in Normandy on D-Day and took part in the assault on Pegasus Bridge to relieve the Paratroopers.

Three different directors were used to film each of the British, American and German scenes, with all German and French characters speaking in their own language (with English subtitles), very rare for a World War II movie of that time. (Some Subtitles) USA 1962 Annakin / Oswald / Wicki 178m

A man suffering from Alzheimer’s embarks on a final road trip with his granddaughter.

Nick Nolte stars in this poignant drama, Til Schweiger’s English language remake of his successful 2014 German film. 10-year-old Tilda (Sophia Lane Nolte) tries to help her grandfather, Amadeus (Nolte), who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, navigate his increasing forgetfulness – they end up going on a remarkable adventure from England to Italy together. The warning signs of his condition first appear when, speaking at his wife’s funeral, he goes on a bizarre tangent about pie, praises her breasts, forgets she’s dead and doesn’t seem to have any idea where he is. In conjunction with the Chichester Festival Theatre Festival season, we screen the 2011 version of ‘The Deep Blue Sea’, where the wife of a British judge is caught in a self-destructive love affair with a Royal Air Force pilot.

Master chronicler of post-War England, Terence Davies directs Rachel Weisz who plays Hester Collyer, the wife of an upperclass judge (Simon Russell Beale) and a free spirit trapped in a passionless marriage. Her encounter with Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), a troubled former Royal Air Force pilot, throws her life in turmoil, as their relationship leaves her emotionally stranded and physically isolated. The film is an adaptation of British playwright Terence Rattigan’s 1952 play, featuring one of the greatest roles for an actress in modern theatre.

A sweet, naïve young woman trying to make it on her own in New York City, Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz) doesn’t think twice about returning the handbag she finds on the subway to its rightful owner. That owner is Greta (Huppert), an eccentric French piano teacher with a love for classical music and an aching loneliness.

Having recently lost her mother, Frances quickly grows closer to widowed Greta. The two quickly become friends, but Greta’s maternal charms begin to dissolve and grow increasingly disturbing as Frances discovers that nothing in Greta’s life is what it seems.

The pace seldom lags, the cinematography is luscious, and look out for a dream sequence with a clever twist.

ROH Ballet Live Kenneth MacMillan’s choreography for ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has become a modern ballet classic, and with Sergei Prokofiev’s overwhelming dramatic music, this is the most popular ballet score.

Shakespeare’s enduring love story is known the world over. Since its 1965 premiere with The Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has become a modern ballet classic. The choreography captures the emotions of the young couple as they fall in love, despite the barriers that finally bring about the story’s tragic end.

Each revival gives opportunities for new dancers to interpret the doomed lovers. The whole company brings the colour and action of Renaissance Verona, where a busy market all too quickly bursts into sword fighting, and a family feud leads to tragedy for both the Montagues and Capulets. The White Crow Due to the extraordinary reaction (and demand) to the first run of this film at New Park, we bring back this brilliant story of Rudolf Nureyev, directed by Ralph Fiennes.

The drama charts the iconic dancer’s famed defection from the Soviet Union to the West in 1961, despite KGB efforts to stop him.

Written by legendary playwright David Hare, the film is structured like a dance, stepping back and forth in time and moving in circles.

Ukrainian ballet dancer Oleg Ivenko plays the lead in his very first film role, and a demanding one at that, delivering lines in a mix of Russian and thickly accented English. Fisherman’s Friends Ten fishermen from Cornwall are signed by Universal Records and achieve a top ten hit with their debut album of sea shanties.

Nine years ago, a group of Cornish fishermen were singing sea shanties in their village pub when a holidaying music executive (played here by Danny Mays) came in for a pint. The result was a million-pound record deal, chart-topping success, a performance at the Glastonbury Festival, and this feel-good film about their lives. Starring James Purefoy (High-Rise), Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game) Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake) and Christian Brassington (Poldark), the film was filmed in small and picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac on Cornwall’s north coast, adding a rugged beauty to the background.

The resultant play is the only comedy that Shakespeare set in his native land, and with its dexterous mingling of verbal and physical humour, ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ started a tradition that reaches right down to the contemporary English sitcom.

In 1943, director William Wyler crafted ‘Memphis Belle,’ a tribute to the titular WWII bomber. Using footage from the National Archives shot by Wyler and his team, director Erik Nelson has created a new film, featuring narration from some of the last surviving B-17 pilots.

Incredibly, all of the raw colour footage Wyler shot was recently discovered deep in the vaults of the National Archives, and a new film has been constructed out of the material. ‘The Cold Blue’ is a meditation on youth, war and trauma, and stands as a tribute to one of the world’s great filmmakers, and the men of the 8th Air Force who flew mission after suicidal mission in the Second World War. Nine of the very few surviving veterans were interviewed in the summer of 2017, and their voices take us through the harrowing world that Wyler and his cameramen captured in the summer of 1943.

The studio is chaotic. Piles of brushes lie around, some still clogged with paint. Tools and materials are stacked up on shelves, yet the artist knows exactly where to find each item as he needs it. He works with a diligent, determined air, never seeming to struggle to find focus. Director Charlie Paul and producer Lucy Paul previously made the charming Ralph Steadman profile ‘For No Good Reason’, and they understand the value of just staying out of their subject’s way as he works. The three-dimensionality, the lucidity of the oils – as much as the graceful movement of the camera – draw us deep into the artist’s world.

Meanwhile, Gidget (Jenny Slate) tries to rescue Max’s favourite toy from a cat-packed apartment, and Snowball (Kevin Hart) sets on a mission to free a white tiger named Hu (Nick Kroll) from a circus.

Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) is on the verge of creating a marketable and sustainable electricity system for the first time in history, when Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) notices a grand weakness in Edison’s design and ignites a war of currents between these two rivals.Nicholas Hoult (‘The Favourite’) co-stars as the genius maverick Nikola Tesla, whilst Tom Holland, Katherine Waterston, Matthew McFadyen and Tuppence Middleton play the fringe characters of this historical story with skill. Eye-catching cinematography (Chung-hoon Chung), production design (Jan Roelfs) and art direction (Stephen Bream) make this film a joy to watch.

Acclaimed director Ron Howard gives us an in depth look at the life and work of opera legend Luciano Pavarotti.

A riveting film that lifts the curtain on the icon who brought opera to the people. Pavarotti gave his life to music and a voice to the world. As Plácido Domingo, one of the world’s greatest living tenors and a close of friend of Pavarotti’s, says: “He would just open his mouth, and everything was easy.” Born in 1935 in Modena, Italy, his career took off when cast as Rodolfo in Puccini’s ‘La Bohème’, in a small regional Italian opera house in Reggio Emilia. He gave his final performance at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, and was diagnosed that year with pancreatic cancer. He died the following year. This cinematic event features history-making performances and intimate interviews, including never-before-seen footage.

2008: First Open Air Screening The first Open Air Screening of ‘High Society’ launched the 17th Film Festival in 2008, which was held outside Chichester Cathedral as a free event. The idea was to provide a family community event and promote our International Film Festival which commenced a week later. We continued with the free open-air Cathedral shows until we moved to Priory Park in 2011, and opened on 2 evenings with ‘Carmen’ and ‘West Side Story’. – Roger Gibson.

This joyful witty musical remake of ‘The Philadelphia Story’ stars Grace Kelly as socialite Tracy Lord who, even as she prepares for her second marriage, still has obvious feelings for her ex-husband (Bing Crosby). She also strikes up a friendship with a reporter (Frank Sinatra), who has been sent to cover her society wedding.

The Cole Porter score includes ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ and the famous Crosby/Sinatra duet ‘Well, Did You Evah’. As a bonus we have the jazz master himself, Louis Armstrong, playing the hottest trumpet in the land.

Studio Talk by Rosemary Coxon (Education Officer) A different take on ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ at Chichester Festival Theatre and other Rattigan plays, this talk examines Rattigan’s works which became successful films.

As well as ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ we will look at ‘The Winslow Boy’ and several other of his plays. A deeply troubled man in many ways, we will examine how the inner turmoil of his life is evidenced in his writing and films. ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ (Rachel Weitz, Tom Hiddlestone) will be screened at New Park on 8 Jun 15:15 with an introduction by Rosemary Coxon, plus three more screenings.

A four-part course looking at the spy film genre from the silent era to the present day.

This exciting event looks at the genre of spy films, either as fictional espionage – think Le Carré; a basis for fantasy – Bond, of course or as true stories, like ‘Carve her Name with Pride’ and ‘Odette’.

We showcase firstly the silent era and the early 1900’s – a time of paranoia and invasion fears: followed by the exploits of real life and fictional Allied agents in the WW2 years. At its peak of popularity in The Cold War, the spy film chose on one hand the real-life gritty agents in ‘The Ipcress File’ and ‘The Spy who came in from the Cold’ and the unrealistic but oh so popular Bond films. Lastly, we will take you from 2000 right up to the present day with the like of ‘Spooks’ and ‘The Night Manager’. Do join us and enjoy being shaken and perhaps stirred. See you at the cinema! Nick Smedley Talk Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) was one of the most brilliant film directors in the history of Hollywood cinema. A master of the comedy of manners, Lubitsch was a shrewd and warmly indulgent observer of the American way of life, love and the battle of the sexes. His skill at dissecting matrimonial discord and concord with exquisite good taste and subtle inflections led to the coining of a new phrase in Hollywood in the 1920s – ‘the Lubitsch Touch’.

This two-hour evening seminar, led by our regular Hollywood film historian Nick Smedley, is a repeat of the April event, and will focus on the sound films Lubitsch made from 1932 until his premature death of a heart attack in 1947. Whether you’re already an aficionado, or you’d like to find out more about him, please join Nick and come and experience the Lubitsch Touch!
