Chichester Cinema RUBY TUESDAY

Ruby Tuesdays – Milestones of the Past 40 Years: 1979-2019

From February through to December on each first and third Tuesdays of the month, we will be screening milestones and highlights of specific years in our Cinema history. In most cases we will be charging an admission price of £2 reflecting the original ticket price in our first few years as a film society. This season we will be showcasing films representing: my start at the cinema in 2003; the cinema’s partnership with Europa Cinemas; the various auditorium upgrades; and our first open-air screening (look out for this year’s OpenAir Screenings in the centre pages). Look out also for a Special Event on 23 June, where we screen Abel Gance’s epic ‘Napoleon’ (pg19). See you at the Cinema  (General Manager)

Birds of Passage Pájaros de Verano From the team behind the genre-defying ‘Embrace of the Serpent’, comes an equally audacious saga centred on the Wayúu indigenous people during a crucial period in recent Colombian history. Torn between his desire to become a powerful man and his duty to uphold his culture’s values, Rapayet (José Acosta) enters the drug trafficking business in the 1970s and finds quick success despite his tribe’s matriarch Ursula’s (Carmiña Martínez) disapproval. A sprawling epic about the erosion of tradition in pursuit of material wealth, ‘Birds of Passage’ is a visually striking (the glorious cinematography by David Gallego is something to behold) exploration of loyalty, greed, and the voracious nature of change. This compelling variation on the ‘narco’ crime-drama was Columbia’s 2019 submission for Best Foreign Film Oscar. (Subtitles) Columbia 2019 Cristina Gallego & Ciro Guerra 125m

High Life

Booking Ref

A father and his daughter struggle to survive in deep space where they live in isolation. Monte (Robert Pattinson) and his baby daughter are the last survivors of a damned and dangerous mission to the outer reaches of the solar system. The crew, death-row inmates led by a doctor (Juliette Binoche) with sinister motives, has vanished. How Monte came to be a dad, and what happened to the other people aboard the ship, is information teased out through voice-over narration and flashbacks that are sexual, violent, disturbing – and riveting. A staggering and primal film about love and intimacy, suffused with anguished memories of a lost Earth, ‘High Life’ is a haunting, thrilling achievement from visionary French director Claire Denis – her first film in the English language. Glyndebourne makes a welcome return this Summer with three events, including live transmissions of ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Magic Flute’. Coupled with the two Met Opera encores, we are delighted to offer such a strong selection of Opera. From the National Theatre, ‘Small Island’ is a true highlight, based on Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning novel, alongside one of the best reviewed productions of recent times, the Sam Mendes directed ‘The Lehman Trilogy’. To round off the season we present ‘Romeo and Juliet’ from the Royal Ballet, and a repeat of Exhibition on Screen’s very impressive ‘Rembrandt’.

D-Day 75th Anniversary Commemoration To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings (6th June 1944), we present what many consider to be the definitive D-Day film. The film takes in the entire invasion, told on a grand scale from both the Allied and German points of view. The cast includes a who’s who of the time, many of these actually serving during World War II, including Henry Fonda, Leo Genn, Kenneth More and Rod Steiger. The most remarkable being Richard Todd who was among the first British officers to land in Normandy on D-Day and took part in the assault on Pegasus Bridge to relieve the Paratroopers. Three different directors were used to film each of the British, American and German scenes, with all German and French characters speaking in their own language (with English subtitles), very rare for a World War II movie of that time. A man suffering from Alzheimer’s embarks on a final road trip with his granddaughter. Nick Nolte stars in this poignant drama, Til Schweiger’s English language remake of his successful 2014 German film. 10-year-old Tilda (Sophia Lane Nolte) tries to help her grandfather, Amadeus (Nolte), who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, navigate his increasing forgetfulness – they end up going on a remarkable adventure from England to Italy together. The warning signs of his condition first appear when, speaking at his wife’s funeral, he goes on a bizarre tangent about pie, praises her breasts, forgets she’s dead and doesn’t seem to have any idea where he is. In conjunction with the Chichester Festival Theatre Festival season, we screen the 2011 version of ‘The Deep Blue Sea’, where the wife of a British judge is caught in a self-destructive love affair with a Royal Air Force pilot. Master chronicler of post-War England, Terence Davies directs Rachel Weisz who plays Hester Collyer, the wife of an upperclass judge (Simon Russell Beale) and a free spirit trapped in a passionless marriage. Her encounter with Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston), a troubled former Royal Air Force pilot, throws her life in turmoil, as their relationship leaves her emotionally stranded and physically isolated. The film is an adaptation of British playwright Terence Rattigan’s 1952 play, featuring one of the greatest roles for an actress in modern theatre. UK 2011 Terence Davies 98m N.B. We will also be presenting ‘Rattigan on Page and Screen’ on Fri 7 Jun 13:30, a Studio talk by Rosemary Coxon. See pg45 for full details.

In this psychological thriller from Oscar-winning director Neil Jordan (‘The Crying Game’), Isabelle Huppert stars as an elegant and enigmatic widow. A sweet, naïve young woman trying to make it on her own in New York City, Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz) doesn’t think twice about returning the handbag she finds on the subway to its rightful owner. That owner is Greta (Huppert), an eccentric French piano teacher with a love for classical music and an aching loneliness. Having recently lost her mother, Frances quickly grows closer to widowed Greta. The two quickly become friends, but Greta’s maternal charms begin to dissolve and grow increasingly disturbing as Frances discovers that nothing in Greta’s life is what it seems. The pace seldom lags, the cinematography is luscious, and look out for a dream sequence with a clever twist. Ireland/USA 2018 Neil Jordan 98m

Romeo and Juliet

ROH Ballet Live Kenneth MacMillan’s choreography for ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has become a modern ballet classic, and with Sergei Prokofiev’s overwhelming dramatic music, this is the most popular ballet score. Shakespeare’s enduring love story is known the world over. Since its 1965 premiere with The Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has become a modern ballet classic. The choreography captures the emotions of the young couple as they fall in love, despite the barriers that finally bring about the story’s tragic end. Each revival gives opportunities for new dancers to interpret the doomed lovers. The whole company brings the colour and action of Renaissance Verona, where a busy market all too quickly bursts into sword fighting, and a family feud leads to tragedy for both the Montagues and Capulets. Cast to be confirmed. 195m approx including 2 intervals Subtitled screening

The White Crow Due to the extraordinary reaction (and demand) to the first run of this film at New Park, we bring back this brilliant story of Rudolf Nureyev, directed by Ralph Fiennes. The drama charts the iconic dancer’s famed defection from the Soviet Union to the West in 1961, despite KGB efforts to stop him. Written by legendary playwright David Hare, the film is structured like a dance, stepping back and forth in time and moving in circles. Ukrainian ballet dancer Oleg Ivenko plays the lead in his very first film role, and a demanding one at that, delivering lines in a mix of Russian and thickly accented English. He does a great job at portraying the fiery ego that Nureyev was famed for, aided by his intense blue eyes and heavy brow. (Some subtitles) UK/ France 2018 Ralph Fiennes 127m

Fisherman’s Friends Ten fishermen from Cornwall are signed by Universal Records and achieve a top ten hit with their debut album of sea shanties. Nine years ago, a group of Cornish fishermen were singing sea shanties in their village pub when a holidaying music executive (played here by Danny Mays) came in for a pint. The result was a million-pound record deal, chart-topping success, a performance at the Glastonbury Festival, and this feel-good film about their lives. Starring James Purefoy (High-Rise), Tuppence Middleton (The Imitation Game) Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake) and Christian Brassington (Poldark), the film was filmed in small and picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac on Cornwall’s north coast, adding a rugged beauty to the background. This crowd-pleaser of a film, sees a late-night talk show host (Emma Thompson) fear that she may soon be losing her long-running show, as she loses her grip on cultural relevance. Legendary late-night talk show host Katherine Newbury’s (Thompson) world is turned upside down when she hires her only female staff writer (Mindy Kaling – who also wrote this film). Originally intended to smooth over diversity concerns, her decision has unexpectedly hilarious consequences as the two women separated by culture and generation are united by their love of a biting punchline. Smart, timely, and brought to life by a terrific cast, ‘Late Night’ is a workplace comedy with a lot of heart – and just as many laughs. USA 2019 Nisha Ganatra 102m

A young Englishwoman spends twenty years making whatever kind of life for herself, at the expense of others around her, in post-World War II England. In this provocative drama, the discontent of bored British housewife Susan Traherne (Meryl Streep) only increases when she begins reminiscing about how she played a key role in the French Resistance during WWII. Now that the war has ended, she feels useless and that her life has no meaning. Her emotional turmoil causes her to become increasingly isolated from her friends and family. The highly symbolic story is based on a play by David Hare. Thirteen-year-old Kayla (Elsie Fisher) endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school – the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year before she begins high school. The film beautifully hovers between those high school films about cliques and fitting in, such as ‘Clueless’, and those that are a bit darker such as Gus van Sant’s ‘Elephant’. Elsie Fisher is absolutely outstanding in the role of Kayla Day, like an undiscovered Fanning sister: her smart, observant performance gives the audience instant access to her vulnerabilities, hurt feelings and quiet determination. Bo Burnham (director) is a name to be remembered! USA 2019 Bo Burnham 93m

The World is Yours Le Monde Est à Toi In this French heist comedy, a small-time dealer dreams of another life but can’t afford it. To escape, he must accept one last job. Whereas ‘Scarface’s Tony Montana came to the crime game as a refugee looking to make a name for himself, François (Karim Leklou) was born into a dog-eat-dog underworld full of killers and cheats. François’ mom, Dany, (Isabelle Adjani), is a pathological con artist and expert safecracker totally consumed by self-interest. François’s dad isn’t in the picture anymore, but a conspiracy theorist named Henri (a hilarious Vincent Cassel) is happy to play the part, if only because he has a huge crush on Dany. François wants out of the game – he is just not cut out in the same vein as those around him – and so is forced into one last heist. This is such an intoxicating delight because after the thrills and spills, it still manages to make us care. (Subtitles) France 2018 Romain Gavras 102m

Shakespeare’s Globe Live Double-meanings, disguises and dirty laundry abound as Sir John Falstaff sets about improving his financial situation by wooing Mistress Page and Mistress Ford. But the ‘Merry Wives’ quickly cotton on to his tricks and decide to have a bit of fun of their own at Falstaff’s expense… The story goes that Elizabeth I was so taken with the character of Falstaff in Henry IV that she asked Shakespeare to write a comedy about the disreputable knight falling in love. The resultant play is the only comedy that Shakespeare set in his native land, and with its dexterous mingling of verbal and physical humour, ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ started a tradition that reaches right down to the contemporary English sitcom. 180m inc Interval

Manipulated by his wicked twin sisters (Anabela Moreira and Margarida Moreira), who seek to profit from their talented but not so bright brother, Diamantino’s narrow world view is blown wide open, forcing him to encounter – among other things – refugees, cloning, nationalism and body modification. Thunder Road

Booking Ref

‘Thunder Road’ deftly balances emotionally affecting drama against bruising comedy – and serves as an outstanding calling card for writer-director-star Jim Cummings. The film follows a Texas police officer (Cummings) on the verge of a meltdown, partially over resentment toward the wife (Jocelyn DeBoer) who left him, and also because of the death of his mother. The first scene finds Jim struggling mightily (and hilariously) through the eulogy at her funeral, and it really establishes his unusual mixture of cheesy politeness and raw-nerve emotion. This is a 12-minute opening scene that you will not forget! Bookended with a monologue towards the end of the film that will leave you breathless, Cummings proves that he is a filmmaker and director to watch with this humanistic story that will make you laugh and cry until it hurts. A documentary presenting Aretha Franklin with choir at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles in January 1972. In January 1972, the Rev. James Cleveland welcomed Aretha Franklin to the stage of his modest LA church. “I’d wish to remind you,” he stated to a packed house that included his regular parishioners, a camera crew and lots of excited musiclovers (including Mick Jagger) “that this can be a church. And we are right here for a spiritual service.” There is so much heart and enthusiasm in this movie that it almost eclipses the music – fantastic though that music is. As part of our Ruby Anniversary celebrations, we are proud to announce a one-off screening of Abel Gance’s epic. Following our three Sold-Out screenings over the 2016/17 Winter, where every viewer echoed Kevin Brownlow’s thoughts below, we bring you this single opportunity to see film at its highest level on the big screen. ‘Napoleon’ is pure cinema, and cinema was designed for sharing. There’s something about the way it was shot that makes it like no other. I can’t tell you how many people, having seen our restoration, have said: “That was the greatest experience I have ever had in a motion picture theatre.” – Kevin Brownlow. Powered along by Carl Davis’s invigorating orchestral score, this is a biopic that pairs the grandeur of its subject’s work and vision with its own cinematic innovations. You will have read about the triptychs that close the movie but perhaps you’ve also heard about the flash cuts, superimpositions, multiple exposures and the cameras mounted on horseback. We present this true epic of cinema (five-hours-forty-minutes which appears to go by in a flash) in two parts, allowing for a lunch break at one of our many local restaurants. Incredibly, all of the raw colour footage Wyler shot was recently discovered deep in the vaults of the National Archives, and a new film has been constructed out of the material. ‘The Cold Blue’ is a meditation on youth, war and trauma, and stands as a tribute to one of the world’s great filmmakers, and the men of the 8th Air Force who flew mission after suicidal mission in the Second World War. Nine of the very few surviving veterans were interviewed in the summer of 2017, and their voices take us through the harrowing world that Wyler and his cameramen captured in the summer of 1943. As Aida and Radamès face impossible choices between patriotism, passion, and paternal bonds, the stage is set for tragedy. With heart-stopping music and spectacular set pieces, including the famous Triumphal March, Verdi’s towering masterpiece opens our Met Summer Encores with a bang. Too Late to Die Young Tarde Para Morir Joven One family’s experiences are the foundation for this dreamily absorbing drama with a poignant, lingering warmth. The summer of 1990 was a time of change for Chile, as the fall of one government led to the rise of a more democratic era. In an isolated community, Sofía (16) (Demian Hernández), Lucas (16) (Antar Machado) and Clara (10) (Magdalena Tótoro), face their first loves and fears, while preparing for New Year’s Eve. They may live far from the dangers of the city, but not from those of nature. The young characters and the country they are in, present a collective portrait of a society coming to terms, often messily, with the new opportunities around them. This is another great entry in the ‘coming-of-age’ genre, told with acute precision from its award-winning director. Chile 2018 Dominga Sotomayor Castillo 110m

Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed... and he finds himself with a very complicated problem, indeed. How do you face the world with all those magnificent songs in your head? How will those around you react when you play them ‘Let it Be’, or ‘All You Need is Love’? Aka ‘Stockholm’ Based on the absurd but true 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm that was documented in the New Yorker as the origin of the ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. Lars Nystrom (Ethan Hawke) dons a disguise to raid a central Stockholm bank, then takes hostages in order to spring his pal Gunnar (Mark Strong) from prison. Negotiations hit a wall, and as hours turn into days, Lars alternates between threatening the hostages and making them feel comfortable and secure. The hostages develop an uneasy relationship with their captor, which is particularly complex for one of the hostages Bianca (Noomi Rapace), who develops a strong bond with Lars as she witnesses his caring nature. This connection gave rise to the psychological phenomenon known as “Stockholm syndrome”. A light touch and well-chosen cast keep this film consistently entertaining. Canada 2018 Robert Budreau 92m

From conception to completion, this is the story of an oil painting and its subsequent sale. An unflinching examination of the intention and techniques of the artist Peter Howson, as he creates his monumental, apocalyptic painting; ‘Prophecy’. The studio is chaotic. Piles of brushes lie around, some still clogged with paint. Tools and materials are stacked up on shelves, yet the artist knows exactly where to find each item as he needs it. He works with a diligent, determined air, never seeming to struggle to find focus. Director Charlie Paul and producer Lucy Paul previously made the charming Ralph Steadman profile ‘For No Good Reason’, and they understand the value of just staying out of their subject’s way as he works. The three-dimensionality, the lucidity of the oils – as much as the graceful movement of the camera – draw us deep into the artist’s world. UK 2019 Charlie Paul 82m

Memoir of War La Douleur A powerful film, for its tense wartime emotions and exploration of inner life, with a devastating lead performance by Mélanie Thierry. It’s 1944, and Duras (Thierry) is an active Resistance member along with her husband, writer Robert Antelme (Emmanuel Bourdieu), and a band of fellow subversives in Nazi-occupied Paris. When Antelme is deported to Dachau by the Gestapo, she becomes friendly with French collaborator Rabier (Benoît Magimel) to gain information at considerable risk to her underground cell. But as the months wear on without news of her husband, she must begin the process of confronting the unimaginable. Through subtly expressionistic images and voiceover passages of Duras’ writing, director Finkiel evokes the inner world of one of the 20th century’s most revolutionary writers. Balloon Ballon A German thriller that deals with the crossing from the GDR to West Germany of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families with a homemade hot-air balloon. 1979: Over 800 men, women and children lost their lives at the East/West German border, and branded traitors. Anyone trying to cross was met with barbed wire, landmines and spring-guns rigged to shoot if stumbled on. Anyone, that is, trying to do it on foot. “A cloth sack, put some hot air in it, and up we go. While I’m happy now that we took that decision, if I had the knowledge I have now I wouldn’t do it, because it was so dangerous, but I didn’t recognise that then,” said Günter Wetzel to mark this film’s release. Director Herbig has created an impressively realistic film, about an audacious escape attempt by two families living under the thumb of a repressive regime. Written by Dame Eileen Atkins, this is the fascinating true story about the love affair between socialite and popular author Vita Sackville-West and literary icon Virginia Woolf. Socialite Vita (Gemma Arterton) and literary icon Virginia (Elizabeth Debicki) run in different circles in 1920s London. When the two cross paths, the magnetic Vita decides the beguiling, stubborn and gifted Virginia will be her next conquest, no matter the cost. Vita and Virginia forge an unconventional affair, set against the backdrop of their own strikingly contemporary marriages; an affair that inspires one of Virginia’s most iconic novels, ‘Orlando’. Australian actress Debicki is excellent (unsurprisingly given her talent) as Virginia Woolf, making her somehow both enthralling and off-putting at the same time. Arterton has the more extroverted role as Sackville-West, the vivacious society girl and popular author – bigger sales than Woolf – who balances life as an acceptably unconventional ambassador’s wife with her desire to bed almost everyone she meets. This is a classic case of opposites attract, one built on a mutual love of the written word they share in markedly different ways. Their approaches are opposing but the chemistry is undeniable. Never Look Away Werk Ohne Autor German artist Kurt Barnert has escaped East Germany and now lives in West Germany, but is tormented by his childhood under the Nazis and the GDR-regime. A sweeping romantic historical drama, we follow thirty years in the life of a great artist – loosely based on Gerhard Richter, one of the 20th century’s most admired visual artists – played by Tom Schilling. The film goes from a childhood witnessing Nazi Germany, to post-war East Berlin, where he falls in love with a young woman (Paula Beer) whose father (Sebastian Koch) is an ex-Nazi in hiding, to escaping to the West at the time of the Berlin Wall, and ultimately being part of the exciting new movement in contemporary art. A four-part course looking at the spy film genre from the silent era to the present day. This exciting event looks at the genre of spy films, either as fictional espionage – think Le Carré; a basis for fantasy – Bond, of course or as true stories, like ‘Carve her Name with Pride’ and ‘Odette’. We showcase firstly the silent era and the early 1900’s – a time of paranoia and invasion fears: followed by the exploits of real life and fictional Allied agents in the WW2 years. At its peak of popularity in The Cold War, the spy film chose on one hand the real-life gritty agents in ‘The Ipcress File’ and ‘The Spy who came in from the Cold’ and the unrealistic but oh so popular Bond films. Lastly, we will take you from 2000 right up to the present day with the like of ‘Spooks’ and ‘The Night Manager’. Do join us and enjoy being shaken and perhaps stirred. See you at the cinema! The Cinema of Ernst Lubitsch

Nick Smedley Talk Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) was one of the most brilliant film directors in the history of Hollywood cinema. A master of the comedy of manners, Lubitsch was a shrewd and warmly indulgent observer of the American way of life, love and the battle of the sexes. His skill at dissecting matrimonial discord and concord with exquisite good taste and subtle inflections led to the coining of a new phrase in Hollywood in the 1920s – ‘the Lubitsch Touch’. This two-hour evening seminar, led by our regular Hollywood film historian Nick Smedley, is a repeat of the April event, and will focus on the sound films Lubitsch made from 1932 until his premature death of a heart attack in 1947.
