welcome to

Chichester Cinema Bienvenue à New Park. We have put together such a delicious variety of films for you this season that even a football fan like me may have to sacrifice one or two matches of the World Cup. Two mini-seasons stand out this summer: Rendez-Vous with French Cinema brings together nine recent French films including Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s (‘Amelie’ & ‘Delicatessen’) ‘The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet’ (in English) and Roman Polanski’s ‘Venus in Fur’ with Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner. We hope to honour the memory of The Great War 100 years on, with our Commemorating WW1 season. Look out for the first ever Oscar Winner for Best Film, ‘Wings’, and perhaps Stanley Kubrick’s best work, ‘Paths of Glory’ with Kirk Douglas.

A Perfect Plan

Paths of Glory

Summer means Festivals and Fun, and we here at New Park never miss out on our opportunity to raise the ‘Film’ banner at this time of year. The 23rd Chichester International Film Festival follows this current season, and it will launch on the 8th and 9th August with two Open Air Screenings at Chichester’s iconic Priory Park (‘Oh! What a Lovely War’ and ‘Some Like it Hot’). A week before that (Friday 1st August) we will have a Festival Programme Launch at the New Park Bar. Come and join us from 11am-2pm for some nibbles and a drink, have a chat to Roger Gibson (Festival Artistic Director) about some hidden gems and pick up your Festival Programme before anyone else.

Every year we have around 25 generous supporters who help us bring the best films to the Film Festival by becoming a Festival Patron. See pg27 for details on how you too can become a Festival Patron. See you at the Cinema

The film follows this Irish communist leader who returns from a decade in New York before being deported for alleged Communist sympathies, to re-open the dance hall he built in 1921. Celebrates the spirit of the free thinkers who went to learn, argue, dream and have fun in the dance hall. Possibly Ken Loach’s last film. UK/Ireland 2014 Ken Loach.

Ghosts

Thu 26 Jun 18:30 Tickets £15 (Friends/Students £12.50)

By Henrik Ibsen, adapted and directed by Richard Eyre, featuring Lesley Manville. Eyre’s first-rate revival of Ibsen’s 1881 play races along reminding us how much Ibsen, the pioneer of naturalism, owed to Greek tragedy. Lesley Manville’s Helene Alving is a magnificent performance, and Oswald, whose gradual degeneration is precisely charted by Jack Lowden, is also as powerful. This sold out and critically acclaimed show has been captured live during its limited West End run. Approx 90m. (No interval)

Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, who was raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson). Belle’s (Gugu Mabatha-Raw) lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar’s son (Matthew Goode) bent on change, who with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England. The supporting cast (Sarah Gadon, Miranda Richardson, James Norton, Tom Felton) delivers expectedly great performances, particularly Penelope Wilton, the saucy bon-mot spewing Aunt, obviously recalling her ‘Downton Abbey’ character. The film was partly shot at Kenwood itself, and is a pleasure to look at. UK 2013 Amma Asante 104m

Fioravante (John Turturro) decides to become a professional Don Juan as a way of making money to help his cash-strapped friend, Murray (Woody Allen). It doesn’t take much arm-twisting from Murray, to convince Fioravante to participate in a threesome with his doctor and her rich friend. From here, both rapidly grow to like this kind of income, and embrace their new relationship as pimp and gigolo. The intentional nod to Woody Allen’s work is outspoken. The ideas behind the character of this fading gigolo are very simple, but true and appropriate for our time of loneliness and emotional distance. The intelligent storytelling is complemented by beautifully selected music pieces, with an incredibly fast moving and wry screenplay. Also starring Sharon Stone, Vanessa Paradis and Sofia Vergara. Royal Shakespeare Company In this play Shakespeare explores loyalty, betrayal and growing old as King Henry’s (Jasper Britton) health is failing as a second rebellion threatens to surface. Intent on securing his legacy, he is uncertain that Prince Hal (Alex Hassell) is a worthy heir, believing him more concerned with earthly pleasures than with the responsibility of rule. Meanwhile, Falstaff (Antony Sher) is sent to the countryside to recruit fresh troops. Among the unwitting locals, opportunities for embezzlement and profiteering prove impossible to resist as Falstaff gleefully indulges in the business of lining his own pockets. As the King’s health continues to worsen, Hal must choose between duty and loyalty to an old friend in Shakespeare’s heart-breaking conclusion to this pair of plays.

Royal Opera House This early Puccini masterpiece makes a welcome return to Covent Garden after an absence of over 20 years, in a new production by Jonathan Kent under the baton of Music Director Antonio Pappano. The exciting Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais sings the title role, who gives the bold but impressionable heroine, a very different perspective. She is matched in star power by Jonas Kaufmann as her lover, Des Grieux, and Christopher Maltman as her cynical brother Lescaut. Puccini’s sumptuous, richlycoloured score is characterized by youthful vitality and filled with glorious melodies. The opera culminates in Manon’s heart-breaking Act IV aria ‘Sola, Perduta, Abbandonata’, as she contemplates her impending death. Running time tbc. Opera in 4 acts sung in Italian with English subtitles, recorded live at the Royal Opera House on 24 June. (New production).

Beyond the Edge 61 years after Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, we present a documentary about that extraordinary achievement.

Sat 28 Jun 16:00 Mon 30 Jun 17:00 Tue 1 Jul 13:30

It details the British expedition led by Colonel John Hunt in a way that gives great insight into this enormous achievement. Among the climbers were two New Zealanders, Edmund Hillary and George Lowe, two colonial blow-ins with great climbing experience from their home country. With monsoons looming and others in the race to the summit, the tension is high. The re-enactments have been seamlessly incorporated into archival material, and the narration as well as the recollections of the sons of all key members of the team, really brings home all that is at stake. Pooley has created a tense, detailed account of a history-making expedition that is riveting and informative. Absolutely fascinating! New Zealand 2013 Leanne Pooley 90m

A woman in love tries to break her family curse of every first marriage ending in divorce, by dashing to the altar with a random stranger. In the Lefebvre family, all first marriages end in failure. To Isabelle (Diane Kruger), it doesn’t matter if it’s a real curse or a stupid belief, she is in a long-term relationship with Pierre (Robert Plagnol), and she wants to be on the safe side. The only solution is to find a first husband - anyone will do. The characters are all likable and the infectious French arrogance enriches the humour. Vastly enjoyable this is the feel good comedy of the year which makes viewers wonder whether wealth and organised lifestyles actually secure happiness and longevity in relationships. King Lear National Theatre Live - Encore Oscar-winning ‘American Beauty’ and ‘Skyfall’ director Sam Mendes returns to the National Theatre for this new production of Shakespeare’s masterpiece. Aging, weary King Lear (Simon Russell Beale) plans to divide his realm between his three daughters. He tells them that the one who declares the greatest love for him will win the lion’s share. Goneril (Kate Fleetwood) and Regan (Anna Maxwell Martin) attempt to outdo one another with extravagant praise. Disgusted by their behaviour, the youngest daughter, Cordelia (Olivia Vinall), refuses to say anything. Enraged, Lear banishes her forever, even though she is his favourite. So begins a series of events that lead to tragedy. It reunites him with frequent collaborator and two-time Olivier Award winner Simon Russell Beale. Book early to avoid disappointment. Fri

Don Giovanni

Tickets £17.50 (Friends/Students £15) to include interval wine.

Glyndebourne - Recorded Jun 2014 The legend of Don Juan tells how, at the height of his licentious career, he seduced a girl of noble family and killed her father, who had tried to avenge her. In the original Spanish tragedy, Don Juan’s attractive qualities - his vitality, arrogant courage, and sense of humour - heighten the dramatic value of the catastrophe. The power of the drama derives from its rapid pace, the impression it gives of cumulative tension as Don Juan’s enemies gradually hound him to destruction, and the awareness that the Don is goaded to defy even the ghostly forces of the unknown. In the end he refuses to repent and is eternally damned. Canadian baritone Elliot Madore is in the title role, and Andrés Orozco-Estrada makes his Glyndebourne debut conducting the L.P.O. Jack McCracken - a man of principle in a corrupt world… but not for long. Moments after taking over his father-in-law’s business he’s approached by a private detective armed with some compromising information. In Paris, the unknown actress Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner) arrives late for the audition of a play that is an adaptation by the director Thomas (Mathieu Amalric) of the 1870 novel ‘Venus in Furs’. He is ready to leave the theatre when Vanda convinces him to read part of the play with her. She knows the lines by heart and questions aspects of the characters entwining performance with reality. The film is similar both to ‘Knife in the Water’ (1961) and ‘Carnage’ (2011), in that it involves characters struggling for domination in a confined space. This time it’s mainly sex, not class or status, that serves as the battlefield. It’s so elegant and effortlessly accomplished. (subtitles) France/Poland 2013 Roman Polanski 95m

Juliette Binoche and writer-director Bruno Dumont join forces for this searching portrait of the troubled sculptor and her poet brother. A portrait rather than a biopic – and miles from the romantic fervour of the 1988 Isabelle Adjani-starrer of (nearly) the same name – this ‘Camille Claudel’ depicts the troubled sculptor (Juliette Binoche) as an inmate of an asylum near Avignon. Camille lives a seemingly uneventful life among the other inhabitants – played by real-life patients – with whom she enjoys a tender intimacy. She receives a visit from her brother, visionary poet Paul Claudel. Their relationship and Camille’s internment form the basis of a challenging inquiry into madness, the clinical system and the nature of religious and artistic inspiration. The film nevertheless carries an intense emotional charge and Binoche’s mesmerising, nerves-bared performance is one of her finest ever. (subtitles) France 2013 Bruno Dumont 97m

Clint Eastwood’s latest films is the story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group ‘The Four Seasons’. This is a musical biography of the rise, tough times and personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation. Far from a mere tribute concert, ‘Jersey Boys’ gets to the heart of the relationships at the centre of the group - with special focus on frontman Frankie Valli, the small kid with the big falsetto. This is a glimpse at the people behind a sound that has managed to endure for over four decades in the hearts of the public. USA 2014 Clint Eastwood 134m

Colin Firth stars in this docudrama exploring the savage murders of three young children as part of a satanic ritual. To tell this true story as a docudrama, Egoyan alternates between the perspectives of the mother (Reese Witherspoon) of one of the three victims, and an investigator (Firth) staunchly against the death penalty who aided the defence of the three accused teens. For the most part, we follow Firth as he poses obvious questions the local authorities had no interest in asking, content to have someone to blame. Egoyan however, is the master of his canvas, an expert at knowing how to paint a portrait of a grieving town, creating the mourning atmosphere that led to the hysteria about Satanic cult rituals on which the three teens were accused. Echoes of ‘The Crucible’ and based on the 2002 best-seller by investigative journalist Mara Leveritt. USA 2013 Atom Egoyan 114m Box Office 01243 786 650

With its stunning visual and musical set pieces, Berlioz’s first opera is based on the celebrated 16th-century goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini. Les Beaux Jours Retired dentist Caroline (Fanny Ardant) is married, yet falls in love with her significantly younger lecturer in this delightful French romantic comedy. Caroline discovers new life paths when her daughters send her to “Les Beaux Jours”, an institution where retirees spend their hours sewing, playing table tennis or taking computer lessons. At these lessons, she meets Julien, a teacher more than 20 years her junior, with whom she soon enters a passionate relationship that turns her dull retirement upside down. Ardant, well into her 60s, delivers a convincing performance of a character who simply isn’t over the top. The age issue gives this film a touching distinction, being more accustomed to seeing the young driven by sex, but here the elegant, sensitive and dignified elderly dentist, shows that need can survive. On her 11th birthday, Angeliki jumps off the balcony to her death. Was it suicide or an accident? Angeliki calmly leaves her eleventh birthday party, steps over the balcony of her family’s Athens apartment and drops to her death. The reason for her suicide drives the rest of the film. At first perhaps one’s guess is that she is being abused by her grandfather, the only man in the family. But not so fast. The grandfather, brilliantly played by Themis Panou, overcomes his embarrassment over his granddaughter’s death and leads the way in helping social services uncover the dark secrets of his family. Under Avranas’ skilful direction, who also co-wrote the script, as the secrets are revealed, so the tension increases. But suspend your suspicions until the end - they may surprise you. It is not necessary to have seen the previous instalments (‘The Spanish Apartment’ & ‘Russian Dolls’), because scenes that establish why Xavier (Romain Duris) is in New York provide both short and long-term background. His wife Wendy (Kelly Reilly) has left him, taking their children to her new partner in Manhattan, and leading Xavier to relocate. His travails, articulated through musing voice-overs that recall Woody Allen, come from a place of responsibility to his children, while acknowledging that sleeping on a mattress in a cruddy apartment is fine at 20 but worrying at 40. Of Horses and Men A country romance about the human streak in the horse and the horse in the human. Here, the horses are the stars. We focus on a remote Icelandic community of small-holders and horse-breeders, who nurse within their hearts the passions and physical needs that horses are not shy of showing. An uptight fellow trots over on his dainty little mare to call on an attractive widow, perhaps with romance on his mind: unfortunately, this woman is the owner of a lively stallion which also has romance on its mind. The results are spectacular. The sex lives of horses and, if you will, the death lives of horses are plain for all to see. Some of the scenes are staggeringly explicit and entirely extraordinary: it is not every film that really does show you things that you have never seen before. And yet the film manages also to be tender, delicate and funny. (subtitles) Iceland 2013 Benedikt Erlingsson 85m

The Golden Dream La Jaula de Oro Absorbing and suspenseful road movie, following three Guatemalan kids trying illegally to cross the Mexican border into the US. Spanish director Quemada-Diez was a camera assistant to Ken Loach, and has avowedly stuck to Loach’s gritty realistic directing style here. The title comes from a Mexican ballad about the despair of Mexicans who have made it into the US, but find it a “golden cage” because the US accepts their cheap labour without allowing them the proper residency papers they need to rise beyond the servant class. Three excellent non-professional actors play the lead roles, two kids who are desperate to get out of Guatemala, along with a young Indian boy they meet. With a poignant romantic tension and a tender sort of ‘Jules et Jim’ frisson between the three of them, this is a very substantial movie, with great compassion and urgency. Stanley Kubrick’s blistering indictment of military politics is an unforgettable movie experience and perhaps his best film. Adapted from a 1935 Herbert Cobb novel, in turn based on real events, this is a brilliant tale of horror in the trenches. Safe in their picturesque chateau behind the front lines, the French General staff passes down a direct order to Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas): take the Ant Hill at any cost. A blatant suicide mission, the attack is doomed to failure. Covering up their fatal blunder, the Generals order the arrest of three innocent soldiers, charging them with cowardice and mutiny. Dax, a lawyer in civilian life, rises to the men’s defence but soon realizes that nothing less than a miracle will save his clients from the firing squad. Alan Readman presents this illustrated talk drawing on the regimental archives, local newspapers and other sources held at the County Record Office. It describes the role of the Regular, Territorial and Service battalions at the Somme and at Ypres, at Aubers Ridge and the Boar’s Head, and looks at how the men from Sussex coped with the ordeal of the trenches. A remarkable story of service and self-sacrifice, it pays homage to a regiment and to a generation on the centenary of the outbreak of the war.

War Horse Follows a young man and his horse Joey, and how their bond is broken when Joey is sold to the cavalry and sent to the trenches of WW1. Spielberg directs this epic adventure set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe. Joey and Albert (Jeremy Irvine) are forcefully parted, the film then follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets British, German, French, before the story reaches its emotional climax in No Man’s Land. New archival compilation from the BFI appropriate for our WW1 commemoration season. Cinema a century ago was a new, exciting and highly democratic form of entertainment. Picture houses nationwide offered a sociable, lively environment in which to relax and escape from the daily grind, and with feature films still rare, the programme was an entertaining, ever-changing roster of short items with live musical accompaniment. Includes scenes of Allied troops celebrating Christmas at the Front, and an early sighting of one of cinema’s greatest icons. UK/US 1914 Music by Stephen Horne 85m

Song and dance numbers and all-star cameos thinly veil the starkness of this anti-war satire. Richard Attenborough’s adaptation based on the stage show of the same name. The Smith family attend the latest attraction at Brighton Pier, a vaudeville performance that reimagines the tragedy of the war in music-hall terms, complete with inspiring songs, prizes and a scoreboard toting up the dead. However, when the family’s sons are recruited during a particularly rousing number, they pass from the performance into the “real world” of conflict. All-star cast includes Ian Holm, Dirk Bogarde, John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Michael Redgrave, Vanessa Redgrave, Corin Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Maggie Smith, Susannah York and John Mills. Maybe “nobody’s perfect”, as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and this is one of them. When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the two newest and homeliest members of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect… until a lovelorn singer (Marilyn Monroe) falls for “Josephine”, an ancient playboy (Joe E. Brown) falls for “Daphne”, and a mob boss (George Raft) refuses to fall for their hoax. The script by director Billy Wilder and IAL Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1957, ‘Some Like It Hot’ is the quintessential madcap farce and almost everybody’s favourite movie comedy. USA 1957 Billy Wider 125m Box Office 01243 786 650

Downhill

Four old school friends reunite to attempt the epic coast to coast walk, across the United Kingdom. Gordon’s idea to reunite his four school friends for the first time in 20 years is arguably a terrible idea. They were a profoundly mismatched group to start with and age certainly hasn’t lessened their differences. On top of this, Gordon has chosen a holiday that turns out to be a gruelling physical endurance test, rather than anything remotely pleasurable. Walking coast to coast across the United Kingdom was never going to be easy, and the results are as funny as they are tragic, as this comically incompatible foursome walk full-tilt into their mid-life crises. As their journey unfolds, this comically incompatible foursome walk full tilt into their mid-life crises. UK 2014 James Rouse 98m

The misadventures of Allan Karlsson who like Forrest Gump, succeeds in life despite evident drawbacks. Karlsson (Robert Gustafsson) isn’t the sharpest tool in the box, nor is he particularly sane, but he has an innate common sense and a good heart, that over his long life has earned him some surprising friends (Franco, Stalin, Truman, Reagan, Gorbachev…) and landed him amongst some historic moments (Spanish Civil War, invention of the atomic bomb and the fall of the Berlin Wall). With echoes of Woody Allen’s ‘Zelig’, the humour is delivered with such deadpan panache that it’s irresistible. At its Berlinale screening, the laughter often went through the roof. Returning to the territory of ‘Once’, John Carney explores the poignant ways in which music brings people together. Swapping Dublin for New York, and trading a single couple for a group of people trying to mend bonds or forge new ones, the touching film trades in heart-on-sleeve sentiment, and deploys a series of gentle ballads, a number of them performed by Keira Knightley as Greta. Carney demonstrates that the disarming emotional candour and intimacy of his earlier film (‘Once’) was no fluke, he has a profound respect for the way music is created. Lovely chemistry between Knightley and Mark Ruffalo enriches their many scenes together, and mostly off the radar since her wonderful performance in ‘True Grit’, Hailee Steinfeld balances teen attitude with insecurity. James Corden playing Greta’s busker friend registers some of the funniest moments. Also stars Catherine Keener. USA 2014 John Carney 104m

Au Bout du Conte Using the modern fairy tale canon, and filling the storyline with references to classic fairy tales elements, this is an enchantingly funny romantic comedy. Laura (Agathe Bonitzer) is still waiting for Prince Charming at the age of 24. So when Sandro (Arthur Dupont) appears at a party, she thinks he’s the one. But then again, when she meets Maxime (Benjamin Biolay), Laura starts to wonder if some Princes could be more charming than others? The fantastic duo Agnes Jaoui / Jean-Pierre Bacri prove once again to be some of the best comedy dialogue writers in the world. The movie travels through the illusions, fears, hopes we can’t live without, from waiting for a Prince charming to big and little forms of superstitions. This is an enchanting, funny, intelligent gem. (subtitles) France 2013 Agnes Jaoui/Jean-Pierre Bacri 112m

The son of a farmer becomes one of the most charismatic and successful golfers of all times. This new documentary is hoping to make a similar splash as ‘Senna’ (2000), by looking at the incredible story of how a highly driven and uniquely charismatic young man turned golf on its head, inspiring millions across the world. In contrast to Ayrton Senna who was born to a rich family, learnt to drive by the age of 9, and whose father built him his own go-kart track, Seve’s family lived on the bread line, and his first golf club was the head of a broken 3-iron tied to a stick, with which he used to hit pebbles on the beach. The film cleverly intertwines real footage with dramatization, and features young actor José Luis Gutiérrez as the young Seve and 2012 Gaudí Award winner María Molins as Carmen, Seve’s mother. Filmed on location in the northern coastal region of Cantabria. UK 2014 John-Paul Davidson

Glyndebourne Director Tom Cairns returns to create a world that melds the archetypal and the modern, and the great Verdian Sir Mark Elder conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra. During the 1850s, Verdi found himself increasingly drawn to stories of complex, ambiguous outsiders who challenge the limits of society. ‘La Traviata’ continues a series of intimate, personal ‘domestic’ operas by Verdi, including ‘Luisa Miller’, ‘Stiffelio’ and ‘Rigoletto’. In ‘La Traviata’, we hear Verdi’s music naturally evolving to accommodate the growing realism of his characters and settings. While remaining true to his bel canto roots, Verdi creates music which bends, stretches and grows with Violetta, a heroine of unprecedented depth and dimension who runs the gamut from glittering coloratura to melting lyricism to dramatic declamation. In their Glyndebourne debut, Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva portrays this iconic role, opposite American tenor Michael Fabiano as Alfredo.

A man who fakes his own death and assumes a new identity in order to escape his life, moves in with a woman who is also trying to leave her past behind. Colin Firth plays Wallace Avery, a failure as a husband, father, professional golfer and FedEx employee. He decides his life is so awful, he fakes his death and starts over as Arthur Newman. This transformation might have worked had he not met a person equally as damaged in Charlotte (Emily Blunt). As if drawn together by the failings in their lives, the pair take to the road on a journey of discovery. Outstanding performances by Firth and Blunt, joined by Anne Heche, make this a very enjoyable film. USA 2012 Dante Ariola 101m

Blue Ruin Dwight is a mysterious outsider whose quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, Dwight Evans (Macon Blair) winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. For better or worse, we are complicit with him from the beginning, which means that we experience with comic horror his various blunders and catastrophes, including an encounter with a crossbow arrow that he cannot remove from his thigh. (Stallone would have handled it easily.) This is a classic (and gory) American revenge story that won the FIPRESCI Prize in the Directors’ Fortnight program at Cannes 2013. Jealousy

Booking Ref

La Jalousie A regularly out of work theatre actor is torn between the woman he lives with, and the woman he loves. 30-year-old Louis (Louis Garrel) lives with actress Claudia (Anna Mouglalis) in a small, rented apartment. He has a daughter by another woman - a woman he abandoned. A theatre actor and very poor, he is madly in love with this other woman who was once a rising star, but all offers of work have now dried up. Director Philippe Garrel has explained that ‘Jealousy’ is a modern representation of Parisian relationships inspired by his own father’s early-20th-century love life. Having cast his 30-year-old son Louis, as well as his daughter, Esther (Esther Garrel) as Louis’s sister, it’s obvious that this is a cross-generational family affair, as well as a self-effacing reflection. Like an astutely aching ballad, the film - aptly scored with sweet, strumming beats by Jean-Louis Aubert - is pleased to ambiguously infer the interior logic of its irresolute characters without pigeonholing their motivations. Shot in beautifully crisp black and white. France 2013 Philippe Garrel 77m

The Lady from Shanghai This complex puzzle-within-apuzzle mystery, is a showcase for Orson Welles, showing his singular talents and sensibilities as few other films have. The story is superficially simple: a seaman Michael O’Hara (Welles) is hired on the yacht of the wealthy Banister (Everett Sloane). His beautiful but mysterious wife Elsa (Rita Hayworth) has met O’Hara earlier, when he saved her from a mugging. What ensues is a complicated pattern of deception, fraud and murder, with O’Hara finding himself implicated in a murder, despite his innocence. The film is best remembered for its final hall of mirrors sequence, with Elsa and Banister shooting it out amidst shards of shattering glass. Welles produced, directed, wrote and starred in the film, whilst Hayworth gives one of her best performances as the deceptive, seductive temptress, hard-edged and cynical. The film confounds, unsettles and disorients the viewer, very much as Welles intended to do.
