Paris Opera: The gentle yet vigilant muse, the haunted rapture of Hoffmann and the Baudelairian voluptuousness of Giulietta, all make this the absolute masterpiece of its composer. Far more than just the spiritual testament of the composer, this work is a true self-portrait of the man and the artist. Offenbach recognized himself in his hero and, just as the latter never managed to capture any of his lovers, the king of operetta was never able to write the great opera of which he dreamt. ‘The Tales of Hoffmann’ exudes a unique perfume, at once bizarre and visionary, sensual and morbid. Recorded at the Paris Opera in 2012. Sung in French with English subtitles. Conductor - Tomas Netopil; Director Robert Carsen. Starring Stefano Secco and Kate Aldrich. 199m plus interval.

We welcome Lang Lang for these exclusive recitals of Mozart and Chopin, performed in-the-round at the Royal Albert Hall. This is a special opportunity to see one of the world’s leading concert pianists at the top of his game on the world’s most famous stage. With over 5,000 pairs of eyes fixed on him and his Steinway piano, Lang Lang’s natural flair shines through as he tackles the works of two of history’s greatest composers. A rapturous ovation at the end of the last of Chopin’s ‘Ballades’ draws the crowd-pleasing pianist back out for a number of encores, including Mozart’s popular ‘Rondo Alla Turca’ and a breathtaking performance of Scriabin’s ‘Etude in D-sharp minor’. His recital includes three piano sonatas by Mozart, Chopin’s 4 Ballades, and 8 amazing encores! 125m plus interval.

A look at the mysterious relationship between Victorian art critic John Ruskin and his teenage bride Effie Gray. After marrying at the tender age of 19, Effie (Dakota Fanning) quickly realises her marriage is a lie when Ruskin (David Suchet) refuses to consummate it. Yearning for affection, she soon falls for the charms of the artist John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge). Desperate to be freed from Ruskin, Effie embarks on a life-changing journey to become one of the first women in history to seek a divorce from her husband, making her an everlasting figure in feminist history. Written by Emma Thompson who also stars in the film, and featuring Julie Walters, who steals every scene as Ruskin’s overbearing mother. Set in London, Venice and the wilds of Scotland, Effie Gray is a very beautiful, elegant period drama. UK 2014 Richard Laxton 108m

This authentic uplifting tale of two friends whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of black American soul music is literally moving UK audiences. Set in Lancashire, 1974, we follow John Clark, (played with an exceptional conviction by newcomer Elliot James Langridge) as he becomes fervently embroiled in the increasing ‘northern soul’ movement, after befriending enthusiast Matt (Josh Whitehouse). John hadn’t ever belonged to anything before, but now, with his new friends, he feels part of something special, pursuing his dreams of becoming a DJ. The highlight is a brilliant recreation of an all-night dance-a-thon at that northern soul mecca, the legendary Wigan Casino. Look out for Steve Coogan, Ricky Tomlinson and John Thomson who have lent support for this film which boasts one of the soundtracks of the year. UK 2014 Elaine Constantine 102m

The Hundred-Foot Journey Rather like director Lasse Hallström’s ‘Chocolat’, this is a sensuously photographed film which is as much foodie-fantasy as engagingly off-beat romantic drama. Displaced from their native India by sectarian conflict, Papa Kadam (the legendary Om Puri) and his family take their epicurean passions to a picturesque French town, where they turn a derelict roadhouse into a traditional Indian eatery, Maison Mumbai. Trouble is, right across the road is a posh, Michelin-starred restaurant run by Madame Mallory (an imperious Helen Mirren), whose efforts to stymie their business eventually turn nasty. But meanwhile her sous-chef, Marguerite (Le Bon), is falling for the Kadam family’s star cook, Hassan. As the two factions traverse the strip of tarmac that separates them, their social, cultural and indeed romantic divisions gradually fade, to sometimes surprising ends. A tense thriller where young British soldier (Jack O’Donnell) is accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the streets of 1971 Belfast. Unable to tell friend from foe, and increasingly wary of his own comrades, the raw recruit must survive the night alone and find his way to safety through a disorientating, alien and deadly landscape. This is a taut thriller, with great control of action and pace, and an outstanding re-creation of the west Belfast war zone. There are moments of dry-as-dust comedy, as when a member of a bombmaking team asks another how he’s going to get up in the morning: after all, he’s not getting his alarm clock back. Demange has crafted a thoroughly convincing picture (actually filmed in Blackburn and Liverpool) that could almost be a newsreel from the era. UK 2014 Yann Demange 99m

An aspiring poet in 1950s New York has his ordered world shaken when he embarks on a week-long retreat to save his hell raising hero, Dylan Thomas. Recounting celebrated Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ first trip to America in the 1950’s, this beautifully shot (in black & white) film has the ability to stir your deepest emotions. Harvard graduate and poetry teacher John Brinnin’s (Elijah Wood) precise opening steps accompany his equally meticulous repetition of tour dates prepared for literary hero, Dylan Thomas (Celyn Jones). Though Brinnin initially indulges the poet’s want for candy bars and the odd shot of Red Eye, the fan-boy soon realises his attempts at steering a chronic drinker back on track are miserably futile. Impulsive, unpredictable and often talking in riddles, Dylan’s lyrical and damaged sides are conveyed to perfection by Jones. UK 2014 Andy Goddard 90m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Laurent Pelly’s hilarious staging of Donizetti’s most popular comic opera returns to Covent Garden with a star-studded cast. Nemorino (Vittorio Grigolo) worships beautiful Adina (Lucy Crowe) from afar. But she’s the most sophisticated woman in the village and he’s just a poor peasant with nothing to offer but his love. To makes matters worse, he has a rival in the swaggering form of Sergeant Belcore (Levente Molnar). When larger-than-life travelling quack Dr Dulcamara (Bryn Terfel) comes to town, he sells the young man what he claims to be a love potion. Donizetti’s warm and sunny rustic comic opera was an immediate hit when it premiered in 1832. Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni conducts this revival of Laurent Pelly’s much-acclaimed staging. Mr. Turner
This eagerly awaited bio-pic is an exploration of the last quarter century of the great, if eccentric, British painter J.M.W. Turner’s life. Turner (Timothy Spall) lives in London with his doting father (Paul Jesson) and equally devoted housekeeper Hannah Danby (Dorothy Atkinson). When his father dies, he travels to Margate to paint, and meets Sophia, who succumbs to the artist’s charms long before she finally discovers who he is, and why everyone else thinks he’s so damned important. Meanwhile, Turner mingles among the aristocracy and rules the roost at the Royal Academy. The work is an astonishingly detailed and richly enjoyable recreation of the era, but one that’s also immediately familiar as another slice of director Mike Leigh himself - class-conscious, awkward and affectionate. Leigh’s long-term collaborator Spall is astounding as Turner, and delivers an Oscarcalibre tour de force reminiscent of Charles Laughton in his prime, and rewarded with the 2014 Cannes Film festival Best Actor award. Filming in the exact locations and utilising court reports as primary source material, Rosi mainly cast local Sicilians, some of whom knew Giuliano personally. The story of English mathematician and logician, Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), who helps crack the Enigma code during WW2. The film portrays the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team of code-breakers at Britain’s top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of WW2. He was a rather complex man. A genius, but he could be shrewd, cold and callous at times. However such personality traits made him the perfect candidate for a top secret job working for the government, left with the seemingly impossible task of cracking the code for the machine aptly entitled ‘Enigma’. Norwegian director Morten Tyldum, the man behind the exceptionally captivating thriller ‘Headhunters’, has brought such talents to this tale in quite remarkable fashion, enhancing the suspenseful aspects of the narrative, and the notion of this ‘race against time’. Cumberbatch does justice to this intricately crafted character, turning in the best performance of his career to date. He completely embodies Turing, both physically and mentally, coming to terms with the deep rooted emotions that lie within. UK 2014 Morten Tyldum 113m

April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Out-numbered, out-gunned, and with a rookie soldier (Shia LaBeouf) thrust into their platoon, Sergeant Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. David Ayer’s film succeeds in creating a claustrophobic mood, prising us into the Sherman tank in 1945 Germany with its melting pot of tension and mix of personalities within the 4-man crew. ‘Fury’ is a gritty, realistic war drama that emphases the horrors, futility and devastation of war only too well. ROH Ballet (Delayed Live)
Wed 17 Dec 19:30 Sun 28 Dec 15:00
A genuine family ballet by Christopher Wheeldon in the spirit of Lewis Carroll’s muchloved children’s classic. On its premiere last year, this new ballet enjoyed a rapturous reception from the critics. A terrifically light and funny work, packed with inventive designs, imaginative effects and striking choreography. The whole Company contributes to the fun, dancing such quirky characters as a twitchy White Rabbit, a tap dancing Mad Hatter and a sinuous caterpillar. Underpinning it all is Joby Talbot’s superlative, playful music - the first full-length score written for the Royal Ballet in 20 years. An ideal pre and post-Christmas family treat. 175m approx including 2 intervals.

Pride
It’s 1984 and the Miners’ Strike is causing great hardship, especially in one remote Welsh pit village. With Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton. Despite some misgivings, a group of young gay activists led by bolshy Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) decide to raise money for the community, but when they travel down to deliver the funds they’re unprepared for the homophobia that greets them. However, it transpires that a taciturn village elder (Nighy) has long been in the closet, and the strikers’ wives, headed by Staunton’s no-nonsense Helfina, are both grateful and curious. In only his second film, noted theatre director Matthew Warchus expertly finesses knowing humour, indignation and sexual politics, while the performances are uniformly pitch-perfect. Gone Girl
Directed by David Fincher and based upon the global bestseller by Gillian Flynn, ‘Gone Girl’ unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) reports that his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), has gone missing. Under pressure from the police, and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behaviour have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife? Nick, however, swears he’s innocent. As the story gets bigger and bigger, more clues reveal that all is not what it seems. Author Gillian Flynn also wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens the New York Film Festival this year. Shot over five years, this is an emotional journey of one woman’s fight for her hometown. Once a thriving multicultural city, where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together in harmony for centuries, Bethlehem has been economically isolated for decades and is now being completely choked by the construction of the eight-metre high Separation Wall - twice the height of the Berlin Wall. Using archive footage as well as contemporary interviews, the film shows the ‘little town’ struggling to survive, through the eyes of one of its oldest Christian families. Channel Four News presenter Jon Snow, described the film as: “One of the most remarkable and moving documentaries I have seen about this unreported story. The tragedy of the Palestinians encapsulated in the life of one family and one town. See the film, then go to Bethlehem and see for yourself.” (subtitles). 90m Palestine 2014 Leila Sansour

Giuseppe Verdi’s famous Opera in 3 acts sung in Italian with English subtitles, from the Vienna State Opera House, Austria. Rigoletto is a tragedy of social injustice and inequality, evident through both the main character Rigoletto (the hunchbacked court jester, a typical Verdian character who oscillates between affection for his daughter and contempt for the Duke and his courtiers) and also in the explicit recreation of the nobility’s lascivious lifestyle. An intense drama of passion, deceit, filial love, revenge and murder, Rigoletto perfectly combines melodic richness with dramatic power, both being features which characterise Verdi’s opera masterpieces and ensure them a permanent place in the world’s operatic repertoire. With Piotr Beczala | Simon Keenlyside | Valentina Naforniţţ. New production by Pierre Audi. Conductor: Franz Welser-Möst. 165m approx including 2 intervals.

From the beloved novels by Michael Bond, this is the story of the comic misadventures of a young bear (voiced by Ben Wishaw) that travels to the city in search of a home. A young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family (Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins), who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Me, Myself and Mum Les Garçons et Guillaume, à Table!
A cheerful and inventive comic confessional about the director’s upbringing, and based on his stage show. Mrs. Gallienne, a rather temperamental upper middle-class lady, has three children, two of whom she considers as her sons and another she calls Guillaume. Logically indeed, the latter teenage creature does not picture himself as a boy, rather as a girl or at best as a homosexual. But how can a mother act in such an objectionable way? And why? Through a series of painful chain of experiences, Guillaume will discover little by little who he is actually and will manage to break free from her pernicious influence. Diane Kruger adds to the fun, as a Bavarian spa worker administering an enema to our hapless hero. France 2014 Guillaume Gallienne 85m

Maggie Smith, Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas and the beautiful city of Paris team up in this charming comedic drama. It’s the Francophile’s ultimate fantasy: A relative wills you an apartment in Paris! A sunlit succession of rooms on two floors, with a garden, on an ancient street in the heart of the Marais district. Of course, there’s a catch. Broke and divorced Mathias (Kline) arrives in Paris to lay claim to the apartment long owned by his estranged, now deceased father. But as he is informed by Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), the expat Brit who happens to be living there, the apartment is a ‘viager’ - a tricky French real estate concept that puts all sorts of restrictions on the property. The main one: The occupant of the apartment can live there till death, and the owner has to make monthly payments to the tenant. Maggie Smith is wickedly wry and quick, Scott Thomas (Mathilde’s daughter), herself an expat Brit long living in Paris, plays Chloé with a wincing disapproval at first, and then with something warier, and warmer, as the third act approaches. 2001: A Space Odyssey Stanley Kubrick’s landmark is a mind-bending sci-fi symphony, an epic commonly considered one of the best films ever made. Based on Arthur C. Clarke’s ‘The Sentinel’, Kubrick and Clarke’s screenplay begins with the “Dawn of Man” to the sound of Strauss’ ‘1896 Also Sprach Zarathustra’. As a bone is tossed into the air, Kubrick cuts to a 21st Century spacecraft orbiting above, and in that one edit, a film legend is created. Moving forward, we see five scientists (three of them in a hibernating state) on their way to Jupiter, their only company being the all too human computer HAL 9000. This is an extraordinary film that creates intellectual arguments mainly through image and music, with the story shoring up the form, rather than the other way around as is typical in filmmaking. Drama based on Jimi Hendrix’s life as he left New York City for London, where his career took off. Covering a year in Hendrix’s life from 1966 as an unknown backup guitarist to his Monterey Pop triumph, the film presents an intimate portrait of the sensitive musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend. The story is sparked by two young British women - Linda Keith (Imogen Poots), a socialite he meets in NY and coaxes him to London, and Kathy Etchingham (Hayley Atwell), a DJ and hairdresser with whom he shares fun times in London. André Benjamin brings a wry and pensive presence to the role of Hendrix, conjuring a musician distracted by his inspirations as the world spins around him. Winter Sleep Kis Uykusu
From the director of the beautifully brilliant ‘Once Upon a Time in Anatolia’ comes the 2014 Cannes Palme D’Or winner. Aydin runs a rustic hotel in central Anatolia with his wife Nihal with whom he has a stormy relationship, and his recently divorced sister Necla. As the winter snow begins to fall, the hotel turns into a shelter but also an inescapable place that fuels their animosities. Each protagonist lives in a separate part of the house, separated not just by walls, but by misunderstandings, jealousies and disappointment. There is a distinctly Chekovian atmosphere, the three principal characters locked away, dreaming of going to Istanbul as they fritter their lives away inconsequentially. Aydin is unaware of the pain he inflicts, and it is only gradually that Ceylan unfolds the true nature of his character. (subtitles) Turkey 2014 Nuri Bilge Ceylan 196m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Single mother Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) moves into a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year old son, Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher). Delectably enchanting and uplifting in between moments of absolute heartbreak, features the phenomenal Bill Murray in what is perhaps his most emotionally satisfying performance to date. Gett: The trial of Viviane Anseleme An expertly written, brilliantly acted film where a wife struggles against her passive-aggressive husband and the rabbinical judges to legally end her marriage. In Israel there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce - only rabbis can legitimate a marriage or its dissolution. But this dissolution is only possible with full consent from the husband, who in the end has more power than the judges. Viviane Anseleme has been applying for divorce for three years, but her husband Elisha will not agree. His cold intransigence, Viviane’s determination to fight for her freedom, and the ambiguous role of the judges, shape a procedure in which tragedy vies with absurdity, and everything is brought out for judgment, apart from the initial request. Tommy Lee Jones directs (and stars in) this new Western, alongside Hilary Swank, Miranda Otto and Meryl Streep. When three women living on the edge of the American frontier are driven mad by harsh pioneer life, the task of saving them falls to the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank). Transporting the women by covered wagon to Iowa, she soon realizes just how daunting the journey will be, and employs a low-life drifter, George Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones), to join her. The unlikely pair and the three women (Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, Sonja Richter) head east, where a waiting minister and his wife (Meryl Streep) have offered to take the women in. But the group first must traverse the harsh Nebraska Territories marked by stark beauty, psychological peril and constant threat. A fine homage to those who tried to tame the wild and brutal west. What We Do in the Shadows A fly on the wall ‘documentary’ about four vampires sharing a flat in present-day New Zealand, which is, quite simply, hilarious. Hundreds of years old, our heroes are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection - modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, getting into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts. Key to the film’s appeal is the way it presents the problems and activities of vampires as entirely commonplace. Jermaine Clements’ (‘Flight of the Conchords’) mockumentary is packed with laughs, and is an instant classic ready for enduring cult success. New Zealand 2014 Taika Waititi & Jermaine Clements 87m

Leviathan
Full of extraordinary images, this is a mix of Elia Kazan, Chekhov and the Bible. The film’s hero is Kolia (Alexei Serebriakov), a car mechanic with a beautiful wife Lilya (Elena Lyadova), and a teenage son Roma (Sergey Pokhodaev). When crooked mayor Vadim wants Kolia’s land to build his own gruesome luxury dacha, and slaps a compulsory purchase order on him: he gets this precious land for a derisory sum. But Kolia calls on the help of his old army buddy Dimitri (Vladimir Vdovichenkov), who is now a slick lawyer in Moscow, and he has arrived in this remote region with a file full of incriminating evidence on Vadim that he promises his old comrade will induce Vadim to back off. A sober and compelling tragic drama of corruption and intimidation in contemporary Russia which was awarded Best Screenplay at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Three interlocking love stories involving three couples in three cities: Rome, Paris, and New York. Like Haggis’ earlier ‘Crash’, this involves multiple characters (Liam Neeson’s Pulitzer winning author; his wife Kim Basinger; Adrien Brody the shady businessman; soap actress Mila Kunis…), but its scope is wider. It takes place in several countries and doesn’t depend on a single issue to make it whole. Instead, its characters are united through a shared emotional state, a sense of dislocation, of longing, of feeling lost and needing connection. He finds elliptical links between scenes. He accelerates the cutting, so there’s a gradual sense of build. He follows the river of emotion and, unlike so many who’ve run aground, he actually gets to where he’s going - and takes us with him. A journey that seeks to answer many of the questions surrounding this enigmatic painting and its mysterious creator, Vermeer. ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ is one of the most enduring paintings in the history of art, yet the painting itself is surrounded in mystery. This beautifully filmed documentary seeks to investigate the many unanswered questions associated with this extraordinary piece. Who was this girl? Why and how was it painted? Why is it so revered? Using the recently completed and highly complex makeover of the Mauritshuis Museum (The Hague) as its starting point, the film goes on a behind the scenes detective journey to seek out the answers that lie within the other masterpieces housed in the collection. 85m We hope to welcome Phil Grabsky to introduce one of these screenings.

Une Étrange Aventure de Lemmy Caution Godard’s classic science fiction offering set in a futuristic Paris is one of his most entertaining, and not to be missed on the big screen. Private investigator Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine) searches for a missing professor in the city of Alphaville, a futuristic vision of Paris controlled by a repressive government and its robot enforcers. The secret agent makes the acquaintance of the enigmatic Natasha Von Braun (Godard regular Anna Karina), the professor’s beautiful daughter. Natasha seems all but emotionless, and it turns out that emotion has been banned in Alphaville and she’s never even heard of being in love. American science fiction and detective film clichés are re-envisioned through French New Wave techniques in this acclaimed film by director Jean-Luc Godard. Despite its age it’s that rare science fiction film that doesn’t seem to have dated at all. (subtitles) France 1965 Jean-Luc Godard 99m

An alien (David Bowie) crash lands on Earth, seeking help for his drought-stricken planet. Under the name of Thomas Jerome Newton, he becomes a fabulously wealthy industrialist by securing patents to advanced technology, and meets Mary-Lou (Candy Clark), a girl who falls in love with him. Soon, money and its associated decadence exert a stronger gravitational pull on Earth’s new resident. The casting of David Bowie is a coup. He rivets us with his otherworldly and androgynous appearance, and we sympathize with him as he becomes a guinea pig for scientists. The film further cemented director Roeg’s (‘Performance’ and ‘Walkabout’) status as one of the most unique filmmakers of the 1970’s. UK 1976 Nicholas Roeg 139m

Big Eyes The true story of painter Margaret Keane’s life in obscurity while her husband gleaned the notoriety for being the face of her work. Tim Burton brings us this biographical drama about American artist Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) whose work was fraudulently claimed in the 1950s and 1960s by her then-husband, Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz). Walter became a national celebrity and talk show fixture after he pioneered the mass production of prints of big-eyed kids, and used his marketing savvy to sell them cheaply in hardware stores and gas stations across the USA. The ruse broke up their marriage, and when Margaret tried to make it known that she authored the paintings, they ended up in a court battle after Walter called her crazy. USA 2014 Tim Burton 112m

National Gallery A vivid documentary focussing on one of our country’s greatest treasures. The National Gallery in London is one of the great museums of the world with 2400 paintings from the 13th to the end of the 19th century. The sequences of this documentary show the public in various galleries; the education programs, and the scholars, scientists and curators, studying, restoring and planning the exhibitions. We are taken behind the scenes of a London institution, on a journey to the heart of a museum inhabited by masterpieces of Western art from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. ‘National Gallery’ is the portrait of a place, its way of working and relations with the world, its staff and public, and its paintings.

Withnail & I One of the best British comedies ever made, and well deserved of its cult status. London 1969 - two ‘resting’ (unemployed and unemployable) actors, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and Marwood (Paul McGann), fed up with damp, cold, piles of washing-up, mad drug dealers and psychotic Irishmen, decide to leave their squalid Camden flat for an idyllic holiday in the countryside, courtesy of Withnail’s uncle Monty’s country cottage. But when they get there, it rains non-stop, there’s no food, and their basic survival skills turn out to be somewhat limited. Matters are not helped by the arrival of Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths), who shows an uncomfortably keen interest in Marwood. A British classic restored for the big screen, and not to be missed. Ida Another chance to see one of the best European films of 2014. Filmed in incandescent black-and-white, this is an intimate, poetic exploration of the limits of faith. Orphaned during WWII, Anna was brought up in a rural convent and in early 60’s Poland is a young novice preparing to take her vows. When the Mother Superior insists she make contact with her last remaining relative, she meets her aunt Wanda, a free-living intellectual. Their encounter lifts the shroud off the dark secret of their family’s past. Both actresses are superb and reveal much with what they do not show, but this pure and haunting concept is also true of the film’s cogent and profoundly moving narrative. The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance A black comedy that tells the story of an actor - famous for portraying an iconic superhero - as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is a Hollywood icon known for playing a superhero called Birdman but now washed-up, half-crazed and trying to make a comeback on Broadway. Actor Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) is so gifted - and so fearless, at least on stage - that he all but takes over the play, he is Riggan’s worst nightmare. Keaton is scarily persuasive as a man who’s been through hell and back again, and is ably supported by a great cast which also includes Naomi Watts, and look out for the wonderful cinematography. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s (‘Amores Perros’, ‘Babel’) film blurs the lines between truth and fiction in a fascinating exploration of modern madness. USA 2014 Alejandro González Iñárritu 119m

Amour Fou A delightful comedy of errors and acidic analysis of love’s remarkable talent for idiocy. Berlin, the Romantic Era. Young poet Heinrich (Christian Friedel) wishes to conquer the inevitability of death through love, yet is unable to convince his sceptical cousin Marie (Sandra Huller) to join him in a suicide pact. It is whilst coming to terms with this refusal, that Heinrich meets Henriette (Birte Schnoeink). Heinrich’s subsequent offer to the beguiling young woman at first holds scant appeal, until Henriette discovers she is terminally ill.
