The Mountain Between Us

Booking Ref

Stranded after a tragic plane crash, two strangers (Idris Elba and Kate Winslet) must forge a connection to survive the extreme elements of a remote snow-covered mountain. When they realize help is not coming, they embark on a perilous journey across hundreds of miles of wilderness, pushing one another to endure and discovering strength they never knew possible. As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous. How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever? The film zips along at a tightly controlled pace and the dialogue is refreshingly brisk and often quite witty. It’s an adventure but it’s also a starry romance and there’s a smooth handling of the two genres that makes it an easy, glossy ride, despite the situation. Beau Bridges co-stars. Manifesto

Booking Ref

From acclaimed visual artist Julian Rosefeldt, ‘Manifesto’ features two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett in 13 distinct vignettes that incorporate timeless manifestos from 20th century art movements. From anchor-woman to homeless man, from Pop Art to Dogma 95, a chameleonic Blanchett gives a tour-de-force performance as she transforms herself just as vividly as she did when embodying Bob Dylan in ‘I’m Not There’ in 2007. Rosefeldt weaves together history’s most impassioned artistic statements in this stunning and contemporary call to action. You may not know much about 20th-century art manifestos, but you’ll know what you like with Cate Blanchett’s stunning turn as the 13 wildly diverse characters who explore them. The film will be combined with a private view of select pieces in the Tate Modern’s collection related to the film plus introduction by Cate Blanchett and on-stage conversation with Director, Julian Rosenfeldt and a leading cultural critic. This Winter we start off with one of the best reviewed NT Live presentations of recent times (‘Follies’ starring Imelda Staunton), which had five-star reviews across the board. We add to that some Oscar Wilde (‘Woman of No Importance’), some French comedy (‘Le Misanthrope’) and a Nicholas Hytner play (‘Young Marx’) to complete our theatre offerings. Three productions from the Royal Opera House (including ‘Rigoletto’) are complemented by three Bolshoi Ballets. We present ‘The Nutcracker’ from both the ROH and the Bolshoi, allowing a side-by-side assessment of the two ballets. Look out also for the three Exhibition screenings (including the new ‘Cezanne’), plus live Berlin Philharmonic on New Year’s Eve, Andrea Chénier from Milan, and a Q&A from the London Film Festival accompanying the unique ‘Manifesto’.

The Glass Castle

Booking Ref

Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts star in this cinematic working of on one of the longest-running New York Times bestsellers. ‘The Glass Castle’ tells the story of Jeannette Walls’ (Larson) unconventional upbringing at the hands of her deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant parents, and her journey towards acceptance and fulfilment. This young girl comes of age in a family of nonconformist nomads with a mother (Watts) who’s an eccentric artist and an alcoholic father (Harrelson) who would stir the children’s imagination with hope as a distraction to their poverty. The film is shot beautifully, combining handheld camerawork with some strikingly staged moments (look out for Larson bursting on to the streets of New York), and paired with the wonderful set design, this is a treat for the eyes. For his directorial debut, Andy Serkis brings to life the inspiring true love story between Robin and Diana Cavendish (Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy), an adventurous couple who refuse to give up in the face of a devastating disease. When Robin is struck down by polio at the age of 28, he is confined to a hospital bed and given only a few months to live. With the help of Diana’s twin brothers (Tom Hollander) and the ground-breaking ideas of inventor Teddy Hall (Hugh Bonneville), Robin and Diana dare to escape the hospital ward to seek out a full and passionate life together – raising their young son, travelling and devoting their lives to helping other polio patients. Written by two-time Academy Award nominated writer William Nicholson, this is a heart-warming celebration of love and human possibility. UK 2017 Andy Serkis 115m

Paris Pieds Nus A fun and hectic tale of peculiar people finding love, while lost in the City of Light. In an avalanche of spectacular disasters, she encounters Dom (Dominique Abel), the affable, but annoying tramp who just won’t leave her alone. ‘Lost in Paris’ with its trademark antics and intricately choreographed slapstick, will have you leaving the cinema with a gleeful skip in your step and a renewed zest for life. “A charming Ode to Tati and Chaplin … Blends storybook visuals with a stream of clever gags to deliver an infectious romance” – Indiewire. An epic historical romance directed by Régis Wargnier and set in Indochina (later Vietnam) with Catherine Deneuve as a plantation owner who begins a passionate affair with a young naval officer (Vincent Perez). In the hothouse atmosphere of the setting, the officer, JeanBaptiste, falls in love with Eliane’s (Deneuve) adopted daughter (Linh Dan Pham), with the lovers hoping to hide themselves amid the islands of a secret lake. All the components are in place for a lush and sensual old-fashioned (in a good way) melodrama which is as seductive as the stunning Vietnamese landscape. Deneuve has the role of a lifetime and seizes the chances with an ageless elegance. “Regis Wargnier’s Indochine is one of the successes of ‘heritage’ cinema, a hit at the French box office and winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film” – History Today. Un Ballo in Maschera Envy, love, jealousy, revenge and ultimately, forgiveness come together in this Verdi’s intensely passionate masterpiece. The political intrigue at the heart of the opera initially aroused the anger of contemporary censors; indeed, Verdi and his librettist were compelled to make alter the setting, moving the action away from the original Sweden to the distant US: Boston. The great Polish tenor Piotr Beczała returns to the Liceu in one of his most acclaimed roles, singing alongside soprano Ekaterina Metlova. Vincent Lemaire’s staging and Vincent Boussard’s sets reinforce the dark and mysterious atmosphere surrounding the piece, which features lavish costumes by Christian Lacroix. The cast, directed by the true Verdi specialist Renato Palumbo, also features two Verdi leaders: Dolora Zajick and Marco Caria. Le Redoutable The artist director Michel Hazanavicius takes on the French New Wave and runs with it in style in ‘Redoubtable’. Charting the brief relationship of the iconic Jean-Luc Godard and Anne Wiazemsky (following the filming of ‘La Chinoise’, their marriage, and the May 1968 Paris riots) Hazanavicius gives his subject a thorough going over, liberally sprinkled with irony, humour and affection. As Godard becomes more interested in politics he alienates his wife and his friends, not to mention the public who preferred his zestful early films such as ‘Breathless’. With an almost unrecognisable Garrel displaying a deft talent for comedy as Godard and Stacy Martin (from Von Trier’s ‘Nymphomaniac’) looking the part of his Sixties muse, Hazanavicius focuses on the inner turmoil of creative spirits. “A marvellous comedy very reminiscent of Woody Allen’s classics” – Vanity Fair. But Anglo-Pakistani director, Sarmad Masud, takes it in a far more humane and moving direction, using flashbacks to flesh out the sisters’ relationship with their father and brother. A man who plays God for a living meets a boy who chooses to play Devil in Yorgos Lanthimos’ chilling and breath-taking new film. Dr. Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a renowned cardiovascular surgeon presiding over a spotless household with his ophthalmologist wife Anna (Nicole Kidman) and their two exemplary children, 12-year-old Bob (Sunny Suljic) and 14-year-old Kim (Raffey Cassidy). Lurking at the margins of his idyllic suburban existence is Martin (Barry Keoghan), a fatherless teen who Steven has covertly taken under his wing. Once again, as he did with ‘The Lobster’, Lanthimos is working in a deeply metaphorical register, using an impossible situation to illuminate relatable human fears. With uniformly great performances throughout the cast and Lanthimos’ stunning eye for detail and composition, this is one of the most unforgettable films of the year. Louis Malle’s classic WW2 drama (most agree his best film) introduced by Mike Jennings, New Park’s Lead Trustee for Education, and followed by a Q&A. During the Nazi occupation of France, a young student witnesses the courage of his teachers as they defy the anti-Semitic policies of the German forces, and enrol Jewish children in their school using assumed names. Malle creates an authentic mood of unspoken suspicions and everyday secrecy to paint a wintry portrait of childhood on the brink of horrific discovery. France 1987 Louis Malle 104m

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool

A romance sparks between Hollywood leading lady Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening) and struggling young actor Pete Turner (Jamie Bell). In the late 70s, Turner met and fell in love with Oscar-winner Gloria Grahame who, incredibly, was living in the same north London boarding house, whilst optimistically looking for stage work in Britain. Then, some time after their affair ended, Grahame collapsed in her dressing room while on tour in the UK, and had asked to come and stay with Peter and his family in Liverpool, poignantly convinced that she could recover there. Adapted from Turner’s memoir, the film also stars Vanessa Redgrave, Stephen Graham, Julie Walters and a cameo from the real Peter Turner as Jack. To complement this film we present two Gloria Grahame films (‘In a Lonely Place’ & ‘The Big Heat’) on the big screen. UK 2017 Paul McGuigan 105m

Ladies

De Plus Belle A female-centric post-cancer drama set in and around Lyon, and directed by Anne-Gaëlle Daval – another of the many French female writer/directors. Lucie (Florence Foresti) is in remission and her illness is almost a distant memory. Her family pushes her to live life to the fullest, and in doing so Lucie meets the charming and arrogant Clovis (Mathieu Kassovitz), who is immediately beguiled by her wit and humour. It is Dalila (Nicole Garcia), however, an eccentric and delightful dance teacher, who inspires Lucie to rebuild her life and to grow into the woman she always wanted to be. While Stan and Paul have been estranged since childhood, their 16-year-old sons are friends, and the two of them have committed a horrible crime. While their sons’ identities have not yet been discovered and may never be, their parents must now decide what action to take. A film raised by a quartet of truly stunning performances. 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene

Mon 8 Jan 18:15 Wed 10 Jan 17:00 Booking Ref

An unprecedented look at the iconic shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ (1960), that profoundly changed the course of world cinema. Screeching strings, plunging knife, slow zoom out from a lifeless eyeball, 78 camera setups and 52 edits over the course of 3 minutes: Hitchcock changed film history forever with his taboo-shattering shower scene. Filmmakers, critics, and fans contribute, resulting in an enthralling piece of cinematic detective work that’s nirvana for film buffs. USA 2017 A.O. Philippe 91m

Hitchcock (here at his peak) breezes through a nightmarish plot with a lightness of touch that’s equalled by a charming performance from Cary Grant. Shady strangers in a hotel lobby mistake Thornhill (Grant) for a ‘George Caplin’, and from there we sprint from country house to the UN, from Grand Central Station to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. Grant, alongside Eva Marie Saint and James Mason, beautifully handle the claustrophobia and intrigue on one hand and romance and comedy on the other. USA 1959 Alfred Hitchcock 136m

To complement the new documentary ‘78/52’, we present on the big screen, one of the most significant films ever made. Marion (Janet Leigh) takes off with $40,000 of her boss’ money, before paranoia and exhaustion have her at the Bates Motel, where nervous but personable innkeeper Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) greets her. There’s hardly a film fan alive who doesn’t know what happens next, but while the shower scene is justifiably the film’s most famous sequence, there are dozens of memorable scenes. In every generation, a torch passes from father to son. And that timeless dynamic is this film’s beating heart – an intimate, powerfully moving tale of the real-life founders of the modern game of golf. Set against the early days of the sport and stunning landscape of Scotland, we follow the challenging relationship between “Old” Tom Morris (Peter Mullan) and “Young” Tommy Morris (Jack Lowden), the dynamic father-son team who ushered in the modern game of golf. At first matching his father’s success, Tommy’s talent and fame grew to outshine his father’s accomplishments as founder of the Open Championship in 1860. In contrast to his public persona, Tommy’s inner turmoil ultimately led him to rebel against the aristocracy who gave him opportunity, led by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews chief Alexander Boothby (Sam Neill). Director and artist Ai Weiwei’s sprawling dispatch from the frontlines of the worldwide refugee catastrophe is an ambitious call to action. With this movie, multidisciplinary artist and occasional political enfant terrible Ai Weiwei has made a crucially important visual and philosophical document of the modern refugee crisis. We might be watching it 20 years from now to understand either how bad things used to be or where it all started to go horribly wrong. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact. Captured over the course of an eventful year in 23 countries, the film follows a chain of urgent human stories that stretches across the globe, and it is possibly the most visually resplendent piece of non-fiction cinema you will see this year. After a heist goes awry, a bank robber tries to free his brother from Rikers Island, all in one night. After a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, ‘Connie’ Nikas (a new, gritty Robert Pattinson) embarks on a twisted odyssey through New York City’s underworld in an increasingly desperate and dangerous attempt to get his brother out of jail. Despite the slick thriller polish of Connie’s quest, ‘Good Time’ always leaves just enough room between the dramatics for the characters to reveal their humanity. They can’t help who they are; we can’t help watching as that drives them to their doom. This tense, immersive film is directed by brothers Benny and Josh Safdie. USA 2017 Benny & Josh Safdie 101m

Directed by Armando Iannucci (‘The Thick of It’, so expect some very clever comedy), chronicling the events that transpired after the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953. Comedy of the Year! This film has everything: comedy, tragedy, truth, lies, life, death, bravery and cowardice. All under the shadow of Stalin’s Terror… and with an amazingly multifaceted cast who can give us all these things and more. Iannucci masterfully blends dark humour about an authoritarian regime and farcical comedy performed with perfect timing. Cast includes Jason Isaacs as Stalin, Steve Buscemi as Nikita Khrushchev, Michael Palin as Soviet Foreign Secretary Vyacheslav Molotov, Simon Russell Beale as chief torturer Lavrentiy Beria, and Paddy Considine as the Head of Radio Moscow. A unique US indie that recalls both Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Dogtooth’ (2009) and Lenny Abrahamson ‘Room’ (2015), but with a lot more humour thrown in. James (Kyle Mooney) has been kept in an underground shelter completely isolated from the rest of the world. He has never known anything else, so is reasonably happy – particularly because he received weekly instalments of TV show ‘Brigsby Bear’. When police rescue him, he discovers that his ‘parents’ (Mark Hamill and Jane Adams) had actually been his captors, and that ‘Brigsby Bear’ was a fake TV show created by his faux father. With James’ life changed forever, he sets out to finish the story himself and must learn to cope with the realities of a new world that he knows nothing about. A charming tribute to nostalgia, individuality and the power of imagination. USA 2017 Dave McCary 97m

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women In a superhero origin tale unlike any other, the film is the incredible true story of what inspired Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) to create the iconic Wonder Woman character in the 1940’s. While Marston’s feminist superhero was criticized by censors for her ‘sexual perversity’, he was keeping a secret that could have destroyed him. Marston’s (Luke Evans) muses for the Wonder Woman character were his wife Elizabeth Marston (Rebecca Hall) and their lover Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), two empowered women who defied convention: working with Marston on human behaviour research – while building a hidden life with him that rivalled the greatest of superhero disguises. Happy End

Michael Haneke returns with a drama about a well-off French family living in a bourgeois bubble in northern France, oblivious to the human misery unfolding in migrant camps around the port town of Calais, a few miles from their home. As the tough-minded head of the family business, Isabelle Huppert reprises the brisk bourgeoise she does so well; JeanLouis Trintignant is the octogenarian patriarch; Mathieu Kassovitz excels as a quietly nasty brother and the compelling young Fantine Harduin plays his opaque 12-year-old daughter, who is a disarming mystery at the core of the piece. Haneke (Palme D’Or winner with ‘White Ribbon’ and ‘Amour’) delivers an exceedingly clever, thought-provoking and darkly witty reflection on life, death and family relations. The Greatest Showman

Booking Ref

Inspired by the imagination of P.T. Barnum, this is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. Although Phineas Taylor Barnum ventured into politics, newspapers, and the lottery business, among many other more or less salubrious professions, during the course of his highly coloured career, he unabashedly declared himself “a showman by profession”, adding that “all the gilding shall make nothing else of me.” For director Michael Gracey, the force behind the giant-hearted vision of The Greatest Showman, “Barnum was the Steve Jobs or the Jay Z of his time, the original impresario, the original showman.” So, who better to portray this force of nature than the absurdly charismatic Hugh Jackman? Also stars Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Zac Effron. USA 2017 Michael Gracey 120m approx

Shot by the world’s best adventure cinematographers and written by best-selling author Robert Macfarlane, this feature documentary will explore the troubled and triumphant history of our timeless fascination with mountains. Only three centuries ago, setting out to climb a mountain would have been considered close to lunacy. Mountains were places of peril, not beauty, an upper world to be shunned, not sought out. Why do mountains now hold us spellbound, drawing us into their dominion, often at the cost of our lives? ‘Mountain’ is a cinematic and musical collaboration between acclaimed director Jennifer Peedom (‘Sherpa’) and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, one of the greatest chamber orchestras in the world. Ferrari: Race to Immortality

The late 1950’s were known as golden years in the world of motor racing, champions were made and lost on a Sunday, and no losses were greater than those of Enzo Ferrari’s Scuderia. A towering figure in motor racing, Ferrari’s reputation went before him, yet when he spoke of himself he simply said “I am an agitator of men”. British racing heroes, Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins were fearless young drivers who eagerly joined the other glamorous playboy drivers who pushed themselves to the limit to satisfy Ferrari’s appetite for glory. Peter and Mike were highly competitive on the track but their bond was so unshakable they often felt compelled to let the other win. This is the story of the loves and losses, triumphs and tragedy of a turbulent era that shook the motor racing world. UK 2017 Daryl Goodrich 91m

Rigoletto

Live from the Royal Opera House The corruption of innocence is at the heart of Verdi’s potent tragedy in David McVicar’s production for The Royal Opera. Rigoletto, court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect. The opera’s many musical highlights include the ebullient ‘La donna è mobile’; Gilda’s exquisite duets with Rigoletto and the Duke; and the gorgeous Act III quartet that beautifully weaves the voices together. Verdi wrote in 1855 that Rigoletto was his ‘best opera’. He had to overcome state censorship – the censors objected to its depiction of an immoral ruler – but he was vindicated by the premiere’s huge success in 1851. A Zen Buddhist community have given up all their possessions and signed up to a life of chastity to practise the art of mindfulness with the world-famous teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. Filmed over three years, in their monastery in rural France and on the road in the USA, this visceral film is a meditation on a community grappling with existential questions and the everyday routine of monastic life. As the seasons come and go, the monastics’ pursuit for a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them is amplified by insights from Thich Nhat Hanh’s early journals. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose voice is another ingredient to the stillness of the project, delivering the endless poetry with his baritone voice, extremely mindful of delicacy and warmth. Dustin Hoffman helped pave the way for a new generation of Hollywood leading men in the late 1960s. With his breakthrough role in ‘The Graduate’, he became an instant success, proving leading men do not have to fit the mould. At an unbelievable 80 years old, he is still directing and starring in films. Rosemary Coxon, the Cinema’s Education Officer, celebrates his stellar career with “six of the best” of his films over a two week course which recognises the talent of an actor whose films are classics in their own right. As he himself said, “I love acting and I am not going to determine what I do based on what I fear people might think. I am not a Rock Hudson or Tab Hunter: I am me”. Magician: The Many Lives, Mysteries and Films of Orson Welles Orson Welles stands out as one of the great cinema auteurs and tricksters of the 20th century. In this radical re-examination of his life and work, we’ll explore Welles the master magician, a performance artist willing to play with illusion and reality, misdirect, take us behind the curtain, confront us as well as entertain us, conjure up enigmas and frustrate anyone looking for simple answers. In the first part of this informal and interactive workshop, we’ll look at some of Welles’ fundamental themes and tropes as mirrored in films like ‘Citizen Kane’, ‘Touch of Evil’ and ‘Lady from Shanghai’. We’ll also explore many of the innovative techniques Welles employed to dramatise his films. In the second part we’ll investigate two of Welles’ more unfamiliar signature films – the ambitious ‘Falstaff: Chimes at Midnight’ and the serpentine ‘F for Fake’. These films, each one brilliant in its own way, will serve as bookends to help us frame Welles’ lifelong quest, as an outsider, for the epic film. This workshop promises to be a fascinating journey of discovery – everyone welcome.
