The Mountain Between Us

Stranded after a tragic plane crash, two strangers (Idris Elba and Kate Winslet) must forge a connection to survive the extreme elements of a remote snow-covered mountain. When they realize help is not coming, they embark on a perilous journey across hundreds of miles of wilderness, pushing one another to endure and discovering strength they never knew possible. As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous. How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever? The film zips along at a tightly controlled pace and the dialogue is refreshingly brisk and often quite witty. From acclaimed visual artist Julian Rosefeldt, ‘Manifesto’ features two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett in 13 distinct vignettes that incorporate timeless manifestos from 20th century art movements. From anchor-woman to homeless man, from Pop Art to Dogma 95, a chameleonic Blanchett gives a tour-de-force performance as she transforms herself just as vividly as she did when embodying Bob Dylan in ‘I’m Not There’ in 2007. Rosefeldt weaves together history’s most impassioned artistic statements in this stunning and contemporary call to action. You may not know much about 20th-century art manifestos, but you’ll know what you like with Cate Blanchett’s stunning turn as the 13 wildly diverse characters who explore them. The film will be combined with a private view of select pieces in the Tate Modern’s collection related to the film plus introduction by Cate Blanchett and on-stage conversation with Director, Julian Rosenfeldt and a leading cultural critic. This Winter we start off with one of the best reviewed NT Live presentations of recent times (‘Follies’ starring Imelda Staunton), which had five-star reviews across the board. We add to that some Oscar Wilde (‘Woman of No Importance’), some French comedy (‘Le Misanthrope’) and a Nicholas Hytner play (‘Young Marx’) to complete our theatre offerings. Three productions from the Royal Opera House (including ‘Rigoletto’) are complemented by three Bolshoi Ballets. We present ‘The Nutcracker’ from both the ROH and the Bolshoi, allowing a side-by-side assessment of the two ballets. Look out also for the three Exhibition screenings (including the new ‘Cezanne’), plus live Berlin Philharmonic on New Year’s Eve, Andrea Chénier from Milan, and a Q&A from the London Film Festival accompanying the unique ‘Manifesto’.

Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts star in this cinematic working of on one of the longest-running New York Times bestsellers. ‘The Glass Castle’ tells the story of Jeannette Walls’ (Larson) unconventional upbringing at the hands of her deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant parents, and her journey towards acceptance and fulfilment. This young girl comes of age in a family of nonconformist nomads with a mother (Watts) who’s an eccentric artist and an alcoholic father (Harrelson) who would stir the children’s imagination with hope as a distraction to their poverty. The film is shot beautifully, combining handheld camerawork with some strikingly staged moments (look out for Larson bursting on to the streets of New York), and paired with the wonderful set design, this is a treat for the eyes. Dustin Hoffman helped pave the way for a new generation of Hollywood leading men in the late 1960s. With his breakthrough role in ‘The Graduate’, he became an instant success, proving leading men do not have to fit the mould. At an unbelievable 80 years old, he is still directing and starring in films. Rosemary Coxon, the Cinema’s Education Officer, celebrates his stellar career with “six of the best” of his films over a two week course which recognises the talent of an actor whose films are classics in their own right. As he himself said, “I love acting and I am not going to determine what I do based on what I fear people might think. I am not a Rock Hudson or Tab Hunter: I am me”. Magician: The Many Lives, Mysteries and Films of Orson Welles Orson Welles stands out as one of the great cinema auteurs and tricksters of the 20th century. In this radical re-examination of his life and work, we’ll explore Welles the master magician, a performance artist willing to play with illusion and reality, misdirect, take us behind the curtain, confront us as well as entertain us, conjure up enigmas and frustrate anyone looking for simple answers. In the first part of this informal and interactive workshop, we’ll look at some of Welles’ fundamental themes and tropes as mirrored in films like ‘Citizen Kane’, ‘Touch of Evil’ and ‘Lady from Shanghai’. We’ll also explore many of the innovative techniques Welles employed to dramatise his films. In the second part we’ll investigate two of Welles’ more unfamiliar signature films – the ambitious ‘Falstaff: Chimes at Midnight’ and the serpentine ‘F for Fake’. These films, each one brilliant in its own way, will serve as bookends to help us frame Welles’ lifelong quest, as an outsider, for the epic film. This workshop promises to be a fascinating journey of discovery – everyone welcome.

As part of Chichester Cinemaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education Programme, we will be presenting a two hour journey through the development of the systems and equipment that bring the art form to the silver screen. The presentation by Michael Cox, covers the period 1895 to the present. From the pioneers of motion pictures and on through the development of cameras, studios, projectors and cinemas. It will feature along the way the enhancements to sound, colour , depth and screen shapes. The mysteries of VistaVision, Cinerama, CinemaScope, 3D, 70mm, Imax, Dolby Sound and the switch to Digital Pictures will all be revealed!
