welcome to

Chichester Cinema We’re here to warm you up this winter - with some huge releases (Brooklyn; Spectre; Bridge of Spies; In the Heart of the Sea), those Chichester favourites (The Lady in the Van; Carol; The Dressmaker); the usual supply of hidden gems (SuperBob; Black Souls; Grandma) and an exhilarating collection of new French Cinema (see below). To celebrate the Festive Spirit, why not bring the kids to the ‘Frozen Sing-a-long’, enjoy ‘The Nutcracker’ (Bolshoi or ROH), or experience Dench & Branagh’s ‘The Winter’s Tale’. Don’t forget to get your Winter Raffle tickets in early this year, as for the first time, we will be holding an extra draw just before Christmas, in addition to the major draw in January. (See pg7) See you at the Cinema

(General Manager)

A Winter of French Cinema This season, we present no less than nine new French films to help keep us warm through the British winter. There is a film (or three) for everyone: from Gaspar Noé’s controversial Cannes release ‘Love’, to the delightfully hand-drawn animation ‘Zarafa’; from the oh-so-Parisian comedy ‘In the Courtyard’ starring Catherine Deneuve, to ‘The Anarchists’, a gorgeous fin-de-siècle feast starring Tahar Rahim. As the French proverb says: “La gaieté et la santé, changent l’hiver en été” * French Film Index: Fidelio: Alice’s Journey In the Courtyard Love

Four One-Act Ballets Enjoy four short ballets in one evening with this quadruple programme from The Royal Ballet. Encore transmission by satellite from Royal Opera House. Carlos Acosta focuses on the dramatic essentials of love, jealousy and revenge in his new production of ‘Carmen’. As well as choreographing the production, Acosta will dance the lead role. Liam Scarlett has used Lowell Liebermann’s thrilling Piano Concerto No.1 as the inspiration for his similarly audacious choreography in ‘Viscera’. Debussy’s evocative score is the inspiration for Jerome Robbins’s ‘Afternoon of a Faun’, which depicts two ballet dancers as absorbed by their own reflections as they are attracted to each other. George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky pas de deux uses a fragment of music composed for the 1877 production of ‘Swan Lake’ for an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique. Dancers include Marianella Nunez, Carlos Acosta, Federico Bonelli, Laura Morera, Ryoichi Hirano, Sarah Lamb, Natalia Osipova, Steven McRae. Running time 180m including intervals.

Of Mice and Men Recorded The hit Broadway production of Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’, filmed on stage in New York by National Theatre Live, comes to UK cinemas. Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominee James Franco (‘127 Hours’, ‘Milk’) and Tony Award nominee Chris O’Dowd (‘Bridesmaids’) star in the highly-anticipated screening of this riveting, powerful production. This landmark revival of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck’s play is a powerful portrait of the American spirit and a heart-breaking testament to the bonds of friendship. Written by Steinbeck and based on his novel of the same name, Of Mice and Men tells the story of unlikely friends George (Franco) and Lennie (O’Dowd), who drift from job to job across California, never letting go of their dreams of owning an acre of land of their very own. Directed by Tony Award, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circles award winner Anna D. Shapiro (Broadway’s ‘August: Osage County’). 165m inc interval. BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, ‘The Martian’ features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Donald Glover… oh, and an amazing 1970’s soundtrack! Taxi Tehran When you are a banned filmmaker, you have to retrain. So why not become a taxi driver? Or better, why not pretend you are a taxi driver and make a film? This is what Jafar Panahi has done. We ride through the streets of Tehran and discover its people through his various passengers. Panahi’s footage of the comings and goings – and goings on – of his passengers (a thief; a teacher; a peddler of pirated films; an injured man and his hysterical wife; a human rights lawyer) is juxtaposed with his niece’s exercise in making a short film within the Government-sanctioned code of practice, which covers everything from what characters should wear and do, but also what they should be named, and what outcomes their behaviour should lead to. This is an optimistic vision for the future of storytelling in Iran. Iran 2015 Jafar Panahi 82m

Based on a Nick Hornby screenplay, this is the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within. There is a good chance that Saoirse Ronan will see her name amongst the Best Actress nominations at the various 2016 award ceremonies, but look out for Emory Cohen’s breakout performance as Eilis’ American flame. Fidelio, l’Odyssée d’Alice Lucie Borleteau makes her feature directing debut with this insightful study of a woman situated in an almost exclusively male milieu. Sailor Alice (Ariane Labed) joins the freighter Fidelio as a replacement engineer, soon discovering that the captain, Gaël (Melvil Poupaud), is a man with whom she was once romantically involved. Though she leaves behind a fiancé on land (Anders Danielsen Lie), she finds her feelings for Gaël have not abated. Buttressed by a remarkable international cast, ‘Fidelio: Alice’s Odyssey’ presents a rounded portrait of a passionate woman faced with difficult choices. An intimate portrait of Malala Yousafzai, who was wounded when Taliban gunmen opened fire on her school bus in Pakistan. As part of ‘The Time is Now’ season of films and talks, we present this look at the events leading up to the Talibans’ attack on Malala, for speaking out on girls’ education and the aftermath, including her speech to the United Nations. The then 15-year-old teenager, who had been targeted for speaking out on behalf of girls’ education in her region of Swat Valley in Pakistan, was shot in the head, sparking international media outrage. An educational activist in Pakistan, Yousafzai has since emerged as a leading campaigner for the rights of children worldwide and in December 2014, became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Listen to Me Marlon

Booking Ref

A documentary that utilizes audio and video that Marlon Brando recorded over the course of his life to tell the screen legend’s story. Brando - who remained deliberately mysterious to the press and the world at large for his entire professional life - created a vast archive of personal audio and visual materials over the course of his lifetime, often deeply confessional and completely without vanity or evasion. Charting his exceptional career as an actor and his extraordinary life away from the stage and screen, the film reveals the complexities and contradictions that were Marlon Brando by telling the story in his own words - and only his own words, revealing a man more humane and compelling than anyone ever could have imagined. This is a one-of-a-kind film about a one-of-a-kind screen legend, a man who transformed acting without ever really knowing what he thought of it. UK 2015 Stevan Riley 95m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Dans la Cour Catherine Deneuve and Gustave Kervern deliver two enchanting performances in this comedy about a not-so-funny subject. Middle-aged musician Antoine (Kervern) suddenly decides to end his career. After several days’ aimless wandering, he is hired as the caretaker of an old residential building in Paris. Mathilde (Deneuve) is a recently retired resident, generous-spirited and deeply involved with the management of the building. After she discovers a crack in her living room wall, her worry gradually turns to panic - what if the building were to collapse? Slowly, Antoine develops a fondness for this woman he is afraid will slip into madness. Through a confusion of misfires and anxiety, the two develop an awkward friendship, funny yet solid, which might just get them through this difficult patch. A very funny film that deals tenderly with victims of depression and mental illness. France 2014 Pierre Salvadori 97m

The true story of the relationship between Alan Bennett and the singular Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who ‘temporarily’ parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway. Nicholas Hytner has once again mined his time as the artistic director of the National Theatre to adapt a stage hit for the big screen. Here we see Maggie Smith reprise the role (brilliantly - of course) she first played in the 1999 stage production of the Alan Bennett play. She plays Margaret Shepherd, a homeless woman who parked her van in the drive of Bennett’s (Alex Jennings) Camden townhouse. His reluctant sense of compassion and his sneaking suspicion Miss Shepherd may turn out to be good copy, lead him to take pity and allow her to temporarily use his drive. She stays for 15 years. Doctor Zhivago Literate, soul-filling and thoroughly romantic, this epic celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2015. Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Boris Pasternak, ‘Doctor Zhivago’ covers the years prior to, during, and after the Russian Revolution, as seen through the eyes of poet/physician Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif). Zhivago is married to Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin), but has an affair with Lara (Julie Christie). Meanwhile, Zhivago’s halfbrother Yevgraf (Alec Guinness) and the mysterious, revenge-seeking Strelnikoff (Tom Courtenay) represent the “good” and “bad” elements of the Bolshevik revolution. Composer Maurice Jarre received one of Doctor Zhivago’s five Oscars, with the others being for Screenwriting, Cinematography, Art Direction and Costume Design. The best picture Oscar, however, went to ‘The Sound of Music’. (Includes interval) USA/Italy/UK 1965 David Lean 193m

The Damnation of Faust Live Opera from Paris This Hector Berlioz work is for four solo voices, full seven-part chorus, children’s chorus and orchestra. Set in 1950s New York, a clerk falls for an older, married woman. Adapted from the Patricia Highsmith novel ‘The Price of Salt.’ ‘Carol’ tells the story of Therese (Rooney Mara), a department store clerk who dreams of a better life outside work and her persistent beau Richard (Jake Lacy). She falls for an older, married woman named Carol (Cate Blanchett), and the two embark on a journey of forbidden love. Like its effortlessly chic central character, Haynes’ adaptation of Highsmith’s novella is impeccably put together. Sexy, sultry, and vibrantly crafted, he pours his heart and soul into each frame he directs with generous and respectful admiration. The seduction and hypnosis of any Haynes film is hard to deny (‘Far from Heaven’, ‘I’m Not There’, and one cannot overlook the vision he engulfs upon as he directs each one of them. The story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny - to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan. Peter (Levi Miller) discovers that he’s The One after being kidnapped by Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) to work in the pixie-dust mines of Neverland. Jackman plays it absolutely straight and in that there’s a delightful, surprising weight to his relationship with Peter, augmented just right by an animated flashback to a fight with Peter’s lost mother (Amanda Seyfried). It’s in the mines that Peter meets Hook (Garrett Hedlund), who, at this moment in his career, is sort of a swashbuckler in the Indiana Jones mould. He even loses his hat in one telling moment near the end. ‘Pan’ is the movie ‘Hook’ should have been: frightening, weird and packed with subtext. An American lawyer (Tom Hanks) is recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to help rescue a pilot detained in the Soviet Union. Spielberg and Hanks combine once more (‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘The Terminal’) to bring us this Coen Brothers written film, which received a rousing standing ovation at the recent New York Film Festival. Hanks stars as James Donovan, the Brooklyn lawyer who bravely risks his life to covertly negotiate the release of an American spy captured after his plane pilot was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960. Several years earlier, Donovan was demonized for his aggressive defence of an American-captured Soviet spy whose many names included Rudolf Abel - brilliantly played by British theatre legend Mark Rylance, who may lead the field for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The film does a fantastic job of capturing 1950s New York in its first half, and surpasses that when Donovan travels to East Berlin. This is a sure-fire Oscar contender, so don’t be surprised to hear the film’s title repeated many times come February 28th at the Academy Awards Ceremony. Set backstage at three iconic Apple launches, we are shown an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at the epicentre of the digital revolution. The history of the personal computer is as much about personalities as it is about technology. Written by Aaron Sorkin (Social Network), directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and starring Michael Fassbender as Jobs, this film keeps the focus very much on those personalities. Following Jobs around with moral lecturettes is Kate Winslet. Cast as a Girl Friday who doubles as Sunday School conscience, Winslet gives a doughty performance, and the PolishAmerican accent is Streep-worthy. As you’d expect from a Sorkin screenplay, the dialogue comes fast and furious. All of the action and emotion is in the spoken word. The daughter of a Scottish farmer comes of age in the early 1900’s in this film based on Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s classic 1932 novel. In the early twentieth century, the Guthrie family is struggling. Led by a violent patriarch (Peter Mullan), who causes son Will (Jack Greenlees) to run away, leaving oldest daughter Chris (Agyness Deyn) to run the farm. Soon, she’s falling in love herself with the charming Ewan Tavendale (Kevin Guthrie), but their new life together will be destroyed by the Great War. As in all of his films, Davies brings a lyrical grace to the project that doesn’t shy away from the story’s epic melodrama. It’s an old-fashioned story of hardship, family, love and war, elevated by the passionate, robust, heartfelt filmmaking skill of a master. The Scottish countryside becomes art with horizons reflected in lakes and fields of wheat that Malick would envy. UK 2015 Terence Davies 135m

Tom Hooper (‘King’s Speech’, Les Miserables’) brings us the remarkable love story inspired by the lives of artists Einar/Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Einar (Eddie Redmayne) is a successful painter in 1920’s Copenhagen who is happily married to fellow artist, Gerda (Alicia Vikander). At this time, Einar is beginning to explore gender identity and with Gerda’s help, he creates a new character, Lili. At first, he simply wears dresses but gradually Lili takes over Einar’s personality. She is the one Einar wants to be. Einar is played with extraordinary sensitivity and dignity by Eddie Redmayne, who may well be in the running for another Oscar. He is a quiet and seemingly passive character, but one who notices and feels everything. French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot lands a coup with his adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy tailored specifically to the Bolshoi dancers, and achieves a magnetic two hours of breath-taking, nonstop dance unlike any other, portraying the Bolshoi’s audacity and energy in a completely new way with music by Shostakovitch. Music - Dmitri Shostakovich; Choreography - Jean-Christophe Maillot. Running time 125m approx including interval.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses Live from the Donmar Warehouse National Theatre Live brings the Donmar Warehouse’s highly anticipated new production of ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ broadcast live from the Donmar’s London home. In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world. 200 years later, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation won the Olivier Award for Best Play. Former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others, they may prove more fragile than they supposed. Includes Michelle Dockery, Janet McTeer and Dominic West. 210m approx including interval.

Bio-Pics: A Life in Pictures

Booking Ref

An illustrated talk by Ellen Cheshire Definition: Bio-pic aka Biographical Picture – a film that depicts the life of a real person, past or present. Every week seems to see the release of another film about some famous figure from the past. In recent months we’ve seen ‘Love and Mercy’, ‘Legend’, ‘Pasolini’ and ‘Bridge of Spies’. Awards are sure to follow. In this talk we will explore this most popular but often maligned film genre. Looking at a range of films released since 1990, we’ll be looking at issues surrounding their narrative structure, production, performance, subject representation or misrepresentation, and critical response. Ellen Cheshire’s book ‘Bio-Pics: a life in pictures’ was published by Columbia University Press in January 2015. Cheshire has also written books on Ang Lee, Jane Campion, The Coen Brothers and Audrey Hepburn. She has contributed to books on James Bond, Charlie Chaplin, Counterculture, Silent Cinema, War Movies and Fantasy Films.

The Suffragette Movement and the Arts On Saturday 21st November, our Education Department is offering a full study day, highlighting and adding further historic detail to the recent powerful films ‘Suffragette’, ‘Make More Noise’ and ‘He Named Me Malala’. The Talented Patricia Highsmith

Booking Ref

An exploration of her life and work Patricia Highsmith’s taut and psychologically thrilling fiction has always aroused the interest of the best film directors. Think of Hitchcock’s ‘Strangers on a Train’, Rene Clement’s ‘Plein Soleil’ and Anthony Mingella’s ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’. This season we screen the latest adaptation of her novel ‘The Price of Salt’ re-named ‘Carol’ and starring Cate Blanchett. Two disciples of Highsmith, S.J Watson and Gillian Flynn directed the hottest hits of recent years ‘Before I go to Sleep’ and ‘Gone Girl’. In this talk, illustrated with film clips, Rosemary Coxon, the cinema’s Education Officer, will give a brief overview of Highsmith’s works and how they translated into film as well as insights into her life as a writer.
