Chichester Cinema What an incredibly diverse range of films we have for you this Winter. Come February, we may all be craving to see ‘Avengers 27’ (or whichever that franchise is up to at the moment), as we will all have had the pleasure of seeing films from France (an incredible 28 to choose from!), Japan (Palme D’Or Winner), Germany, Denmark, Italy, Norway, Turkey, and of course the US and UK – many of which will be fighting for Awards come February. 22 of our French Films make up the French Film Festival on Tour, which we are proud to be part of once again. Some real quality here, including many films that will not be screened again in the UK. To accompany these new films, we are presenting five films from the BFI Comedy Genius Tour. These films, to include Buster Keaton, Marx Bros, Howard Hawks, Jacques Tati and Pedro Almodóvar (next season), have all been remastered into pristine versions primed for the big screen. Ruby Anniversary: 1979 – 2019: 2019 will be a huge year for Chichester Cinema at New Park, for it marks 40 years since Roger Gibson gave light to our beloved cinema. The Ruby Anniversary Year will be unveiled from January’s Awards season and will evolve throughout the year with Special Events, Themes, Mini-Seasons and much more. ‘Juliet, Naked’ is the story of Annie (the long-suffering girlfriend of Duncan) and her unlikely transatlantic romance with once revered, now faded, singer-songwriter, Tucker Crowe, who also happens to be the subject of Duncan’s musical obsession. Annie (Rose Byrne) keeps her feelings about Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke) to herself until a package arrives with a never-beforeheard version of what Duncan (Chris O’Dowd) considers Crowe’s heartbreaking masterpiece, ‘Juliet’. Called ‘Juliet, Naked’, it features the same songs, only slower and without orchestrations. Duncan is in heaven. Annie thinks it’s terrible and says so on Duncan’s website. The French Film Festival 2018, now in its 26th edition, is the preeminent celebration of Francophone cinema in the UK involving more than 30 leading independent cinemas, and comes to Chichester again for 28 days of embarrassing riches with over 20 films. 12 of these films will be imported from France as special premieres, with only single shows allowed. With selections covering everything from contemporary, documentaries, a family film to three classic films starring Gerard Depardieu, Brigitte Bardot and Alain Delon, don’t miss this wonderful assortment, many of which will not be screened again. Von Trier’s new drama follows the highly intelligent Jack (Matt Dillon) over a span of 12 years and introduces the murders that define Jack’s development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack’s point of view, while he postulates each murder is an artwork in itself. As the inevitable police intervention is drawing nearer, he is taking greater and greater risks in his attempt to create the ultimate artwork. A caper film about the unlikely gang of retirees that pulled off the daring Hatton Garden jewellery heist of 2015. The film tells the story of the epic multi-million-pound robbery initially believed to be undertaken by a gang of super-thieves. The actual perpetrators were a group of tough-guy retired criminals in their late 60s and 70s – with all kinds of physical maladies – who were mostly unoccupied and bored, until they consulted a bunch of how-to books and figured out a way to pull off one last hurrah. Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot This is the fourth BFI remastered comedy this season, which sees Monsieur Hulot arrive at a beachside hotel for a vacation, where he accidentally (but good-naturedly) causes havoc. This was the first film to introduce Jacques Tati’s much-loved alter ego Monsieur Hulot, it set the pattern for future appearances, throwing the bumbling hero unwittingly into the middle of the action and letting the ensuing mishaps provoke humour ranging from gentle observations to fairly biting satire. Nearly dialogue-free and driven more by episode than plot, standout set pieces include a disrupted funeral, an interrupted game of cards, and a game of tennis played with rules that can politely be called unconventional. Tati was the heir to the great comics of the silent era – Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd. If you have not seen this classic – make sure you see it this time around. Powell and Pressburger: In Their Time and in Ours

We are delighted to welcome prolific film historian and writer Ian Christie back to New Park for this day course on an extraordinary film partnership. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger produced many of the outstanding British films of the 1930s-1950s period, including ‘49th Parallel’ (1941), ‘A Matter of Life and Death’ (1946), ‘Black Narcissus’ (1947), ‘The Red Shoes’ (1948), and ‘Peeping Tom’ (1960). This day course will first consider their partnership in the context of the periods before and after WW2, and then look at why they were re-discovered and championed with such enthusiasm in the 1980s by Scorsese among others. Ian Christie organised the first full retrospective of Powell and Pressburger’s work in 1978, wrote the first books about them, and knew both filmmakers during their later years. He is now Professor of Film and Media History at Birkbeck College and at Gresham College. A day not to be missed...

Following Preston Sturges in April, the next comedy offering in our education programme is three sessions appraising the contributions of three more giants of film comedy – Buster Keaton, the Marx Bros and Jacques Tati. The sessions are devised and led by Mike Jennings, Lead Trustee for Education. Buster Keaton, with his masterpiece ‘The General’ (1926) as well as many other fascinating films, is arguably the greatest writer/director/ performer of the Silent Cinema. The Marx Bros followed with a string of wonderful films, full of verbal dynamics and gags including ‘Duck Soup’. And then the Frenchman Jacques Tati continued this wonderful comedic tradition with ‘Jour de Fete’, ’Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday’ and others. Coincidentally, the British Film Institute is touring a nationwide programme of films called ‘Comedy Genius’, and New Park is showing a number of these classics, including ‘The General’ (Nov 25 and 26), ‘Duck Soup’ (Dec 8 and 10) and ‘Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday’ (Jan 12 and 17). In this dark political period the world is going through at the moment, this is a wonderful opportunity to see comedy genius at work, and share some laughter rather than despair! All very welcome.

Holocaust Memorial Day

In the Uk, January 27 is holocaust Memorial Day which marks the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. This is a day to remember the six million Jews murdered in the holocaust, and the millions killed under Nazi persecution, and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. In the Uk, thousands of local events and activities take place every year, each one an opportunity for people to reflect on those whose lives were changed beyond recognition, and to challenge prejudice, discrimination and hatred in our own society today. The Chichester Marks Holocaust Memorial Day committee will be presenting a special film event at the New Park Cinema on the afternoon of Sunday 27 Jan between 13:00 and 16:00, and we do hope you will be able to join us. Full details of the programme and how to book tickets will be announced during the Winter Season and on the New Park cinema website. The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 is ‘Torn from Home’, and the film event will encourage audiences to reflect on how the enforced loss of a place to call ‘home’ is part of the trauma faced by anyone experiencing persecution and genocide.
