It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our 120TH anniversary celebration. We have looked forward to this special celebration with great anticipation, enthusiasm, and excitement. We hope that you all will become acquainted with one another at our celebration’s kickoff meet and greet on Friday. On Saturday, we pray that you will have a wonderful time in fellowship at the picnic. It

will be a time to enjoy one another’s company along with good food, outstanding conversation, and an opportunity to catch up on old times. Then on Sunday morning, we will begin feeding our spiritual beings with the Word of God during the worship service to glorify Him to the highest. Our 120-year anniversary celebration program will culminate in the afternoon with the Reverend Terry Norman the pastor of our sister church, Old Pilgrim Baptist Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina. The history of our church is well known within the community; New Pilgrim comes from two mother

churches: Clear Springs Baptist Church and Pilgrim Baptist Church. The New Pilgrim Baptist Church records its beginnings in the year 1896. We are celebrating our anniversary to take time in honoring our past, rejoicing in our present, and taking notice of our destiny in the future. We also greet and give honor to our past pastors who listened to God’s instructions to lead His people through the years. We thank them for the Godly vision, sound teaching, and the stirring preaching that has shaped and inspired the New Pilgrim Baptist Church family to become the image of God. New Pilgrim Baptist, we have come a long way in one hundred and twenty years. God has blessed us and kept us through the good and the bad, in the coming in and the going out. He promised us that He will

never leave us nor forsake us. We are still pilgrims traveling through this old barren land, this is not our home, so let us continued traveling through this 21ST century by reaching the lost, equipping the saints, teaching the gospel, and by keeping the fellowship in perfect unity.

May God Bless You, Reverend Michael A. Greer, Pastor

“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God.” Ephesians 2:19

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It’s been 120 years! Look around and see what the Lord has wrought. New Pilgrim Baptist Church is celebrating a tremendous milestone, rich history

and the promise of a bright future. We remember how God has showered us with immense favors. He’s kept the hedge of protection ever around us. We have a vision. It is a vision that will require us to stir up the gifts and talents God has given to each of us. It is a vision that will take all of us, working together, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to bring to fruition. I was excited and honored to chair such an important event. I am always grateful for every opportunity to serve God and my beloved Church family. It with this sense of gratitude that I thank Pastor Greer for his

continued confidence in my ability to lead such an important part of this year’s celebration. Second, I am grateful to this outstanding committee for putting words into action and making this a very pleasant project. Third, I must thank the many members and friends of this church for joining in this celebration and giving us abundant support. I would also say thank you to those who were once members and have returned to give thanks for this sacred landmark of their faith’s journey. Finally and most importantly, I thank God for all that He has done. I thank Him for divine inspiration that never fails. I am indebted to the Holy Spirit for challenging me “stir up the Gifts” that lie within me.

In Christ, Deacon Joseph L. Westfield New Pilgrim Baptist Church 120th Anniversary Committee, Chairperson

Through the years … The History of New Pilgrim Baptist Church

New Pilgrim comes from two mother churches: Clear Springs Baptist Church and Pilgrim Baptist Church of Simpsonville, South Carolina. The "Pilgrim Baptist Church" records it's beginning in 1868. Before the Civil War, the slaves of the community worshipped with the white congregation of the Clear Spring Baptist. The slaves were allowed to sit in a section of that church. After emancipation, the former slaves set out to have their own church. Some of the white citizens came to their aid and helped them establish a place of worship. Clayton Kilgore, a member of the Clear Spring Baptist Church and former slave owner, was instrumental in helping to build a church for the freed slaves. Mr. Kilgore had begun a school for them on his plantation before the Civil War. He taught them to read and write and continued to teach them both educationally

and religiously. A Sunday School grew out of this 'day school.' A movement to construct a Negro Baptist Church developed from that small Sunday School. Mr. Kilgore saw their need for land and donated a tract of 10 acres for build the church. A controversy over whether to serve real wine or grape juice arose at Pilgrim Baptist Church in 1894, while Rev. Thomas Jones was pastor. This lead to a split in the church into two congregations: Old Pilgrim and New Pilgrim. The new church was organized in the fall of 1895 with 4.7 acres of land donated by the children of Clayton Kilgore: J. S. Kilgore, Mary D. Kilgore, Jesse Kilgore and Fannie Kilgore. New Pilgrim Baptist Church began in 1896. The United States Supreme Court handed down a decision on Plessy vs. Ferguson that same year, leading to the Jim Crow laws of the South. The Court said that public facilities for blacks and whites could be “separate but equal.” Voting rights were systemically stripped from the

black population. By October 1896, South Carolina had 50,000 whites registered and but 5,500 blacks

despite blacks being in the majority. In 1896, the South Carolina General Assembly passed an act of

segregation. The 1890s saw the most lynchings of any decade in South Carolina. None of the perpetrators were ever prosecuted. The United States entered a deep recession that decade, highlighted by the Panic of 1893 when stock prices plummeted, 500 banks collapsed, 15,000 businesses failed, and numerous farms closed.

The New Pilgrim Church begin in Simpsonville, South Carolina in 1896 in the midst of those circumstance. The church began in times of financial crunches, job losses, abuses, liberties lost and few educational opportunities. The first pastor was the Reverend Tom Jones. The charter members were Mr. Will Patten, Mr. Rob Foster, Mr. Henry Goldsmith, Mr. John Kilgore, Mr. Tom Anderson, Mr. P. F. Pilgrim, Mr. Ellie Moore and others. The church erected a building a few years later. It could seat 150 people and cost $1500 to construct. Baptisms took place in a man-made pool behind Miss Treasure Goldsmith's home. Worship services were held one Sunday a month though the Sunday School met weekly.

New Pilgrim set out on a mission to educate it's people by establishing a school. The Church's two Sunday school instructors also served as teachers within that school. New Pilgrim School had an enrollment of 84 pupils in grades 1-7. Reverend Lomax of Greenwood, South Carolina served as the pastor of the Church during the early 1920s. The church tragically burned down during the mid-1920s but was rebuilt. The next pastor was Reverend Mitchell from Georgia. Rev. Woods followed, pastoring for the next few years. Reverend Anderson was interim pastor for 1 ½ years. Reverend Tolbert pastored for next 7 years. There was a total of 8 pastors in ten years.

In the 1930’s New Pilgrim went under construction without a pastor. Reverend Bud Yeargins was interim pastor. Reverend Means was the pastor for next six months. Reverend Wade Kennedy became pastor the next 30 years. In the late 1960s, the Reverend B. W. Harris from Spartanburg, South Carolina pastored for 2 ½ years. The next pastor was A. B. Brockman. Church services increased to twice a month. During his leadership, three young men were called into the ministry, Reverend Lonzo Harris, Reverend Charlie Martin and Reverend Frank Teague. Baptisms were performed in Peter’s Creek off of Woodruff Road. Reverend Brockman was the next pastor. He pastored both New Pilgrim Baptist Church and Shady Oak Baptist Church. When both churches decided to hold services every Sunday, Reverend Brockman chose to pastor only the Shady Oaks Church. In the 1970s, Reverend Lonzo Harris became pastor, followed by T. C. Butler and Reverend Marvin Bennett. Services were held weekly with Sunday School. During the 1980s, Reverend Carlton Hill became pastor and two sons of the church were called into the ministry, Reverend Johnny Wright and Reverend J. W. Wright. The church was renovated twice during this time. Reverend Robert L. Lomax was selected as the pastor of New Pilgrim Church on April 12, 1996. Many new programs were started: Children’s Church, Couples Ministry, Health Ministry, Media Ministry, New Members Ministry and the Sunshine group (Senior Ministry). Deacon Toy Lee Kilgore, Sr. was honored as the Church’s first Deacon Emeritus in New Pilgrim’s history. Pastor Lomax’s leadership ended in 2001. In April of 2002, Reverend Terry M. Saturday was called to pastoral leadership. Under his guidance, Deacon Albert Goldsmith was called into the ministry. A new educational wing was completed with a dining hall, pastor’s office, eight classrooms, secretary’s office and a library. Rev. Saturday's leadership

concluded in July 2007. For over a year, New Pilgrim was without pastoral leadership. Reverend Michael A. Greer was called to serve as interim pastor in February 2008 while the church searched for a pastor. After the committee searched, it was decided that the perfect candidate was already at the church. After nominating Reverend Greer, he was called to serve as New Pilgrim’s pastor on May 10, 2008. During his leadership, Tyrone Westfield was called into the ministry. Minister Westfield was later called to pastor Staunton Community Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina. Pastor Greer asked the Church to step out in faith, starting the Nehemiah Project to fund church projects.

The Nehemiah Project asks members to commit to regularly give a set amount. The story of Nehemiah demonstrates that faith in God requires us to move in faith. Wednesday night Bible study attendance increased with meals offered every other Wednesday. Men and Women’s Sunday School classes were combined into a single Adults' class. The Young Adults' ministry and choir were created. The Couples’ Ministry was changed to the Married Couples Ministry with annual out-of-town trips. New Pilgrim hired its first Minister of Music, Mrs. Nikki Williams. Reverend Greer challenged the Church’s Ministries with service and outreach. The music ministry offers community concerts and an annual Christmas cantata. The Young Adults' Ministry offers an Easter egg hunt and a back-to-school supply giveaway. The Youth Department

goes on outings. The Singles ministry sponsors an annual “How to Be Single” seminar with speakers and lunch. A Women’s weekend is offered yearly. The Media Ministry holds a “Faith in Films” series. The Singles and Married Couples co-sponsor a yearly outing to Deacon Willie Stephen’s lake house. The Vacation Bible School is held yearly with a commitment to a local housing group. The Sunday School’s Christmas outreach includes sponsoring the Salvation Army “Angel Tree.” A monthly Food Drive donates food to the Golden Strip Community Center. Sunday School teachers are encouraged to attend the Enoree River Baptist Association’s educational offerings to become certified. Pastor Greer serves as First Vice President of the Association. The history of New Pilgrim reveals not only the strength of God and faith of its congregants, but that it continues to serve as witnesses. Obstacles still face this community of believers but faith in God sustains us.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God. Ephesians 2:19

Pilgrimage Prayers God of our pilgrimage, you have given us a desire to take the questing way and set out on our journey. Help us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, that whatever we encounter as we travel, we may seek to glorify you by the way we live. Eternal God, give us the courage to set off on pilgrimage. May we travel unhindered by worldly possessions simply trusting in you for all that we need. Sometimes our hearts will be heavy as we plod along and our feet will ache and feel dirty. Other times we will rejoice as the sun shines on the path stretching before us. May we ponder the truth, that the pilgrim’s journey is never finished till they reach home. Amen. You call us, Lord, to leave familiar things and to leave our “comfort zone”. May we open our eyes to new experiences, may we open our ears to hear you speaking to us and may we open our hearts to your love. Grant that this time spent on pilgrimage may help us to see ourselves as we really are and may we strive to become the people you would have us be. Amen. Lord, you know our beginning and our end. Help us to realize we are only pilgrims on this earth and save us from being too attached to worldly possessions. May we experience the freedom to wander, the freedom to hope and the freedom to love as we journey. Amen. Creator God, you are the source of all life and motivation. May we journey in faith and love, rejoicing and eager to serve you. Grant us a glimpse of your glory as we seek to follow you – the Way, the Truth and the Life. Amen. May God the Father who created you, guide your footsteps, May God the Son who redeemed you, share your journey, May God the Holy Spirit who sanctifies you, lead you on life’s pilgrimage, and the blessing of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you wherever you may go. Amen.
