The Brouhaha

brouhaha (broo·hä·hä) noun 1. Excited public interest, discussion, or the like, as the clamor attending some sensational event. 2. Hullabaloo.

Green River’s Ginger Libation, Artisan Beverage Cooperative This is likely the best ginger ale or beer you’ve ever had: like a Moscow Mule in a bottle. It’s 90% ginger wine, 8% pineapple, 1% lime, 1% lemon, naturally gluten free, and clocks in at 9% ABV. Really, all I can say is it’s an incredible treat. Enjoy! $13.99 – Joseph, Iowa City

Gazela Vinho Verde

Alemar’s ‘Good Thunder’ Good Thunder, named for a small town near Mankato, is Alemar’s first washed-rind cheese and is hand-molded, salted, and bathed in Surly Brewing’s ‘Bender,’ an oatmeal brown ale. Its rind is orange and slightly pungent and nutty, nearly meaty flavors make it pair perfectly with a delicious rich ale. Alemar Cheese “is founded on the premise that great ingredients coupled with patience, knowledge, and passion produce extraordinary results” – they definitely hold to theirs standards with this amazing cheese! $12.99/LB. – Megan, Iowa City

This irresistible, bright white Portuguese wine is a bursting mix of citrus and floral aromas. Not too high in alcohol, Gazela Vinho Verde will leave you feeling refreshed on a hot summer day. Just pop open a bottle of this crisp white wine for a fine picnic and let the spritz tickle your tongue – you don’t even need a corkscrew! $7.99 – Alexis, Iowa City

Perail de Brebis This artisan, soft-ripened, flat disc cheese is made of sheep’s milk in Aveyron in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France. The cheese is ripened in wooden moulds and develops a bloomy rind. Its texture is creamy and smooth and the taste is strong and powerful, balanced by earthy undertones. Pairs well with light red wines. $6.99/LB. – Mercedes, Coralville

Schlafly’s X-IPA A seasonal treat, Schlafly’s X-IPA is a part of their rotating Special Release IPA series. Alongside their T (for Tasmanian) and A (American), the X (Export) is a British-style ale – and my favorite of the three. Featuring 100% English hops, a big malt backbone makes it an incredibly smooth and rich IPA with a very different flavor profile than our more piney and citrusy domestics. This is a reimagining of the first IPAs which fueled the British armies during their voyages across the seas to India. Buy a six pack and enjoy the ride. $9.99 – Joseph, Iowa City

Clarksburg Wine Company Chenin Blanc and Chenin Blanc-Viognier 2011 Clarksburg, an appellation near Sacramento, California, is known for producing some outstanding wines featuring the Chenin Blanc grape. We are thrilled to bring in these wines produced in the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg, California. The Chenin Blanc is full-bodied and features delicate floral and citrus aromas on the nose, flavors of apples and pears, with mineral notes on the finish. The Chenin Blanc-Viognier blend is equally lovely. For wines made from handharvested grapes, and produced in fewer than 500 case quantities, these wines are a steal for 14.99!

Wimmer Gruner Veltliner 2013 What a lovely nose! I get tarragon, pea shoots, and lentils along with a note of crazy minerally fresh wet stone. In the mouth it’s as lively as all get out; little hints of lime and melon, along with a really cool herbal action. Take note, folks: this is a LITER bottle so that’s essentially like getting an extra glass FREE. Plus we’re still selling this for the insanely low price of just $11.99. Can you feel the love? It got a 90-point rating from one of those glossy wine mags. – Tom, Coralville Wine Guy

L’Ecole No 41 Semillon, 2012 If you’re looking for a richer white wine, the L’Ecole No. 41 2012 Semillon from Washington State’s Columbia Valley is a great choice. This 100% Semillon had a subtle scent of honey, but it wasn’t as sweet as I expected, and it carried a nice, crisp finish. It was a delicious pairing with grilled lamb kefta and a green salad with feta, tomato and orzo. A great buy! $16.99

Chevre! Local food season is all about fresh-so take advantage of it! Chevre is a fabulous cheese on its own, but with a few clever tricks and the best edibles our Iowa soil has to offer all around- you can turn out some amazing treats! Marinate your Chevre-slice into rounds (throw in the freezer for a few minutes to firm it up if necessary). Place in a 1qt canning jar, add fresh herbs of your choice, cover with olive oil and refrigerate overnight. Add to a bed of baby greens and grape tomatoes, slather on crusty bread, or use as a simply divine sauce by tossing with drained hot pasta and (if you dare boil)! Or roll a chevre log in finely crushed pecans, drizzle with honey, and serve with pear or apple slices and Ines Rosales Seville OrangeTortas. Dressed up sweet or savory-chevre is a great foundation for summertime eats!
