Sensational Beer, Wine, & Cheese at New Pioneer

I

n a day and age when everything is virtual and electronic, we are kickin’ it old school with a paper newsletter in the wine, beer, & cheese department at New Pioneer. We seek out unique products made with love – the kind of items you won’t find “just anywhere” – and we want to make it easy for you to find our best-kept secrets. We respect the art and craft that goes into the fine wines, beers, and cheeses in our aisles. We also value the artisans who make them, and the story behind each and every product on our shelves. We are passionate about these special items and are excited to share them with you! – Melissa Arp, Specialties Coordinator

J P A A Let me introduce you to an incredible trio from Michigan’s renowned Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales. These three open-fermented, barrel-aged, bottle-conditioned ales are now in 12.7 oz. bottles. Try them all! The Calabaza Blanca is a Belgian-styled witbier: tart and light, very well balanced, crisp citrus and spice – very refreshing. The Oro de Calabaza is a Franco-Belgian golden ale, where oak meets sour: complex, mildly spicy, very drinkable with a hint of hops. The La Roja is an amber American wild ale: tart and funky with sour fruit and caramel malt; an exceptional example of the Flanders style, and a new favorite of mine. Enjoy! – Joseph, Iowa City

F C M  A small group of Flemish men fell in love with Cahors in southwestern France and wanted to produce a very traditional, authentic French region Malbec, resulting in this 100% Malbec from vines raised with minimal pesticides and meticulously hand-harvested grapes. Spicy notes of white pepper on the nose, this Cahors Malbec is full of ripe tannins and dark fruit. $12.99 – Kathleen, Iowa City and Coralville

S S This very easy drinking Saison pours a hazy, dark gold and is perfect for a warm summer night. Beautiful floral aromas of lemon, orange, and even a little pepper. Medium bodied; yeast and hops balance deliciously! $9.99 – Megan, Iowa City and Coralville

R R P G,  This Alsatian style Pinot Gris has notes of citrus, flavors of ripe pears and tropical fruits on the mid-palate, and a mineral finish. The winery was founded in 1995, named after the many birds of prey that live on-site – fostered by a local raptor rehabilitation program – and the winery donates a portion of their proceeds to the cause. The perfect balance of sustainable agriculture with a perfectly balanced wine to pair with any light summer fare! $16.99 – Melissa Arp, Iowa City and Coralville

Our aged Provolone is a pizza makers’ favorite. Made in Italy from cow’s milk, it belongs to a family of cheeses termed pasta filata, or stretched curd cheese. With age, it develops a spicy, piquant flavor. Mixed with mozzarella, it adds breadth and complexity to pizza toppings and a nice spice to cheese sauces. $12.99/.

This easy-drinking straightforward red is a bit tart with a smooth feel and a cherry finish. Pair with a homemade red sauce spaghetti or good old fashioned goulash with eggplant! $12.99
