GRAHAM COUGHLAN

Rodney Parade for today’s fixture against Doncaster Rovers in League Two.

Before I touch on today, I want to mention last Friday’s away trip to Crewe Alexandra. I was really pleased with the manner of the performance and the desire the boys showed. We went 1-0 down however even going in losing at half-time, I was really pleased with the performance and think it is fair to say that the goal came against the run of play. But credit to the boys, they didn’t let their heads drop, they kept going, kept working hard and our second half performance was even better and I was delighted to come away with a thoroughly deserved win. The away support was brilliant as always and it was so enjoyable to head across the pitch at Gresty Road after the final whistle and show our appreciation to you for your travels and the fact that we were all heading home with 3 points made it even sweeter.

Leading onto today, it will prove to be another competitive game against a team who sit in mid-table at the moment. They have a strong squad and will be looking to move further up the table and it will be a tough game for both sides. On that note, I want to welcome Danny Schofield, the technical staff, directors, players and supporters from Doncaster Rovers and hope they have a safe journey to and from Rodney Parade.

Hopefully we can get a good atmosphere at Rodney Parade today and give a good account of the club. The support over the past few weeks has been fantastic and I am hoping you can create a really intimidating atmosphere to help us go and get 3 points.

Enjoy the game and get behind the lads.

I would like to begin by offering you all a warm welcome back to
Graham

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC

This afternoon we travel back in time to look at the programme issued on the opening day of the 1985/86 season, when Doncaster Rovers and ourselves played out an exciting 2-2 draw at Somerton Park.

It was Saturday August 17th when we kicked off our Third Division campaign against a Rovers side led by a footballing legend in former Leeds United and Scotland midfielder Billy Bremner, who was indeed the longest serving third-tier gaffer at the time.

Our ‘Amber Note’ programme was priced at forty pence and had an action shot of a pre-season friendly played eleven days previously with Swansea City on its cover; the match, which had ended 0-0, shows our new defender Steve Dowman challenging Colin Pascoe, a player once described as the new Kenny Dalglish in the 1980s, and ironically, Pascoe did serve Liverpool as an assistant-manager to Brendan Rodgers from 2012 to 2015 after Dalglish had left his beloved Reds.

The issue opens with ‘Bob Smith’s View’ and it was Mr. Smith’s first competitive game in charge of the Ironsides after taking over the reins from Colin Addison during the close season.

Smith had already been at the club for three years however, as an assistant under the popular Addison, who had stepped down for health reasons.

Our new boss is hugely optimistic, as they all invariably are on the opening day, and gives the reader a quick rundown of his three signings thus far.

They were forwards Steve Mardenborough and Gordon Staniforth, and the previously mentioned Dowman who unlike the other two didn’t last long and was quickly on his bike for a better offer at Cambridge United after just 11 league and cup starts in amber. Former Burnley and Wales star Leighton James had also joined the club as a player/coach.

Moving along and we have two packed pages

concerning Donny, who boasted the likes of Dave Cusack, the former Millwall defender, longserving goalkeeper Dennis Peacock, former England youth cap Glenn Humphries and the previous season’s second-highest scorer Colin Douglas at Bremner’s disposal.

Overleaf saw the usual staple diet of programmes from this era in ‘Dateline 3’ where a round-up is given of mostly comings and goings from our rival clubs, which to be fair in preinternet days, was a very handy and knowledgeable read.

Our old favourite Tommy Tynan had left Plymouth for Rotherham United in a deal worth £30,000 whilst another old boy in Karl Elsey had left Cardiff City to join Gillingham. In return, City had only signed one player and he was John Farrington from Norwich. I suppose the Canary had morphed into a Bluebird then…. yep, I’m already getting my coat!

One little snippet to note and a sad sign of the times was that due to the FIFA ban on English clubs travelling “Abroad” for friendly matches, the three South Wales league clubs had set up a mini competition with nonleague Ebbw Vale and Merthyr that summer known as “The Friendly Cup” to get themselves sharp for the challenges that lay ahead.

Old faithful Richard Shepherd’s ‘Inside Somerton’ was happening along next with nearly two pages of information and club news. Richard gives thanks on behalf of Bobby Smith to several individuals and companies who had helped the club over the summer; these include Sporting Image of John Frost Square for supplying Training Tops, Mr. David Thomas for supplying paint, and The Garden Centre Langstone for the grass seed!

CHRIS SHINGLER
4 | OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 2022-23

There was news also concerning the departures from Somerton since we last kicked a ball in earnest; and they were Tony Reid, who had joined Chesterfield, Chris Lilygreen who had departed for Yeovil, Mike Pratt was in Bath, Tony Kellow had returned to Exeter, Gary Emmanuel had signed for Forest Green, whilst Kevin Kent at the time of writing hadn’t yet found a new club.

Neville Chamberlain had also left us but was only on loan at Mansfield Town, which was where Kevin too would soon end up.

There is also a snap of the recently passed former County player, Ronnie Radford, who it’s noted had played against our physio Dave Williams in the recently played All Star XI v Hereford Giant Killers 1972 side, in a curtain raiser to the Colin Addison Testimonial, a match that due to the aforementioned ban had to be played at Hereford and not at Somerton Park, as the opposition had been some English club by the name of Manchester United!

After the usual match-action centre spread and some commercial stuff with Peter Jones, we come crashing into ‘County Calendar’ where we are transported back to matches played around the 17th of August from various years. Highlights include a 1-0 League Cup win over the Swans in 1976, and another success in the same competition in 1970 over Reading (2-1). There is also a 1-1 draw in 1980 at Burnley’s Turf Moor and a 3-0 (1956) home win over Northampton, in which illustrious Welsh captain Alf Sherwood made his Newport County debut. Lowlights however include a 1-3 loss at Bristol City (1951), and a 0-2 defeat at Hartlepool in 1974.

There is nice photograph of left-back Trevor Matthewson and his wife Michelle taken at their Cwmbran abode, in ‘County at Home,’ a regular feature in our issues that season which remind me of the old ‘Football Argus’ Seventies series of snaps in their ‘Players off Parade’ where our usually amber-clad favourites were photographed relaxing with family.

Onto the action then and we needed two equalisers on this sunny afternoon, from skipper Terry Boyle on 20 minutes and a Roy Carter penalty on 63, after Steve Mardenborough’s goal had been ruled out and a spot-kick given for what Paul Abbandonato, writing in that nights Football Argus describes as “An offence which no one in the crowd appeared to spot.” Paul goes onto say how that incident had summed up whistler Malcolm Cotton’s day. Donny had taken an early lead on three minutes when Mike Nesbitt, on his debut at 16 years old scored, and again though Neil Woods in the 29th minute of an entertaining encounter.

Amidst the comments published in Monday’s ‘South Wales Argus,’ manager Smith was said to be “Quietly

confident” in the “Fighting spirit” he had found in his side, despite saying the team had not reached the standards they had set in pre-season.

County had started with two non-contract players, fullbacks Graham Rogers and Peter Jones, and another late signing to the squad was on the bench in Ebbw Vale striker Andy Miles, who it seemed was the County player referee Cotton had seen being fouled for the penalty.

Smith rightly pointed out that surely the referee had given the Yorkshire men the advantage of the possibility of the spot-kick being missed and thought it was an “Unbelievable decision” as no player heard a whistle before Mardenborough had scored.

For the record, after the next 45 matches had been played, we finished 19th with Doncaster in a more comfortable 11th spot.

Teams:

County: Mark Kendall, Graham Rogers, Peter Jones (Sub: Andy Miles), Tony Pulis, Steve Dowman, Terry Boyle, Roy Carter, Leighton James, Steve Mardenborough, Gordon Staniforth, John Lewis.

Doncaster: Dennis Peacock, Brian Caswell, Dave Rushberry, Jim Dobbin, Tony Brown, Glenn Humphries, John Buckley, Mike Nesbitt, Colin Douglas, Neil Woods. Sub: Aiden Butterworth.

Attendance: 2,375.

Thank you to those supporters who travelled to Crewe last Friday. Great to see a win on the road and on a Friday night. The support as always is much appreciated.

As we have communicated, we have been working with the administrator appointed to our Kit partner Elite. This week we reached agreement on the stock that allowed us to re-open both of the shops. This will enable supporters to purchase items in time for Christmas. The offering will be a little different given the circumstances. Unfortunately, there are supporters who have bought items in good faith through the online ordering system, and we communicated the email address to make contract with on those items. For ease it is EliteSportsGroup@kroll.com. These situations are never easy for all concerned and the club is not exempt from the impact.

We have two charities of the Day. Firstly, Andy’s Man Club are a men’s suicide prevention charity, offering free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups across the UK and online. They plan to end the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and help men through the power of conversation. More on their great work can be found at www.andysmanclub.co.uk.

We also have Newport Foodbank join us today as part of our initiative with the Dragons, Newport County AFC and Dragons RFC are aware of the challenges of the Costof-Living Crisis and will be joining forces over the winter months to help those that may need support the most. The two clubs value the fantastic support they are given by the community and wish to return this support as part of the EFL’s ‘Together – Supporting Communities’ initiative to support communities and fans of the 72 League Clubs during the cost-of-living crisis. The scheme will see EFL Clubs provide community services and matchday offers to help people in challenging economic times and will contribute to the Government’s ‘Help for Households’ project.

In the run-up to Christmas, both clubs will collaborate to support the Newport Foodbank and will welcome supporters to drop off food donations at the Fan Zone Marquee at all our home fixtures over the winter period.

Newport County AFC supporter, Jim Drewett, has been raising money for Newport Foodbank and has taken part with the club in collections and deliveries for the past couple of years and is hoping for a great response from all supporters this year to help those who need it the most in these challenging times – let’s try and make this winter one to remember for positive reasons.

There will be a bucket collection at today’s fixture for supporters to donate any pennies and pounds to help those in our own community.

Furthermore, Newport County AFC, the Dragons RFC and Newport Foodbank will be giving the opportunity for some of those who need help to attend home fixtures.

Cash donations can be given at the Rodney Parade ticket office – please mark envelopes, ‘FOODBANK DONATION’ and more info can be found at www.newport. foodbank.org.uk.

Our Club of the Day today are Caerleon Junior Youth FC. Caerleon Junior Youth FC was founded in 1988 to support the soccer development of children living in and near Caerleon. It is now one of the largest and most successful youth soccer clubs in Wales with around 300 young players registered.

Based in Caerleon, approximately 4 miles from Newport City centre in South Wales, UK, the Centurion’s head on our Club Crest represents the historic importance of Caerleon as a Roman Legionary Fortress and our Broadway pitches are close to the Roman Amphitheatre, Baths, and Barracks. The traditional green and white colours of the senior Caerleon AFC team are proudly worn by all their Junior teams from Under 7’s upwards.

The Club is administered by a committee and is funded by players subscriptions, sponsorship, and occasional fund-raising events. The club run mini-soccer (7-a-side) teams at every age group from Under 7’s to Under 11’s and 11-a-side teams from Under 12’s to Under 16’s. They also have links to Caerleon AFC Under 19 and Senior teams as well as providing ‘fun football’ for Under 6’s and Under 5’s. More at www.cjyfc.org.uk

Good luck to Graham and lads this afternoon.

Gavin

A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players, and Officials of Doncaster Rovers for this afternoon’s EFL league two fixture.

Family Disability Football

The Family Disability Programme is a funded through Disability Sport Wales, The Spirit of 2012, Activity Alliance, Sport England and London Marathon Charitable Trust.

Our Newport - Family Disability Football sessions started back in July 2021. The programme is a local partnership between Get Out Get Active (GOGA) and County in the Community (CitC).

The programme aims to provide weekly opportunities for people with disabilities aged 7-12 years to attend FUN, FREE, FOOTBALL & MULTI-SPORT sessions. The young people attending play football and join in various other physical activities. Since the programme began, we’ve had participants attend that have not played much football or other sports in their lifetime but thanks to these sessions they have grown in confidence. A few participants have

mentioned they are now considering joining a local football team.

The staff that we have attend the sessions to make sure all children enjoy themselves are Cori Busuttil from CitC, Asa Waite from GOGA/Streetgames and a young Volunteer called Charlie Smith. Charlie has been enjoying volunteering that much she is aiming to complete her coaching badges and secure a place on the female CitC College Programme starting in September 2023.

EFL/Newport County AFC –

Under 13’s Girls Cup

Sponsors Utillita – Cup Sponsored by Melin Homes

The Newport County AFC Under 13’s Girls Cup was recently held on Thursday November 24th at John Frost high school. On the day six local High School entered teams with four schools sending two teams the schools that competed on the day were:

John Frost Comprehensive School

Monmouth Comprehensive School

Caerleon Comprehensive School

Newport High School

Lliswerry High School

St. Joseph’s R.C. High School

All teams played their matches in good spirit and it was really good to see some fantastic football being on the day. It was also a great opportunity for the girls to visit a different school that they might not have been to before. All the girls gave 100% in all the games they played in and showed brilliant teamwork and positive attitudes. The schools that reached the semi-final stage were Monmouth A & B and Caerleon A & B teams. The final was a very tight game and ended 0-0 so it was to be decided on penalties. The weather wasn’t on our side on the day but it didn’t

stop the quality of football being displayed.

The winners of the cup were Monmouth Comprehensive School A team. We would like to thank Melin Homes who have sponsored the Newport County AFC Girls Cup locally for the last nine years. The Girl’s Cup was presented to the winners Monmouth by Paula Skyrme from Melin Homes. Monmouth Girl’s will now go on to represent Newport County AFC in the regional Finals week commencing January 9th. We will keep you all posted on their progress.

Remembering Howard Sharpe

Sadly, on Tuesday 29th November, Howard Sharpe, who was a devoted Newport County fan passed away. Howard enjoyed watching the County as a young boy at Somerton Park, introduced to the club by his father, Gilbert Sharpe who was the head groundsman. Howard followed the County and enjoyed the VIP treatment during recent matches at Rodney Parade as well as travelling home and away. Howard will always be remembered as an avid County fan. UTC.

BACK STORY …

Beginning

This afternoon’s visitors came into being in September 1879 after local railway works fitter, Albert Jenkins, assigned a team of young apprentices to play a match against the Yorkshire Institute for the Deaf and Dumb. The occasion, a 4-4 draw, was such a success that 18-year-old Jenkins and his pals named their side Doncaster Rovers and played a series of friendlies across Yorkshire, turning professional in 1885 and quickly establishing themselves as the senior club in the town. Rovers first joined the Football League in 1901, but twice failed to gain re-election to Division 2 in the first decade of the 20th century, eventually gaining a more permanent foothold as members of Division 3 (North) in 1923.

Record breakers

Doncaster were involved in the longest-ever competitive football match, as their 1946 Division 3 (North) Cup fixture at Stockport County lasted an incredible 203 minutes before a presumably fatigued referee decided to call a halt to proceedings after the ‘golden goal’ extra time failed to strike gold! The following season, Rovers were record breakers again, as manager Jackie Bestall guided his charges to a previously unheard of 33 victories in winning the Third Division North title for the second time in their history, finishing eight points ahead of south Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United.

Doncaster can proudly boast eight championship trophies in their 143-year history, with two Midland League titles, three Division 3 (North) successes, two Fourth Division crowns and a Division 3 title.

Sir Francis Tierney!

The golden goal may not have been successful in resolving the previously-mentioned 1945-46 Division 3 (North) Cup tie at Stockport, but Rovers fans will have altogether happier memories of the 2003 Conference Play-off Final at Stoke City’s Britannia Stadium as they defeated Dagenham & Redbridge 3-2 courtesy of the only sudden death golden goal (known officially as a ‘promotion goal’) in the history of English football promotion play-offs. Francis Tierney earned himself a place in Doncaster, as well as football, history as the scorer in the 110th minute, while two years later he made it into Robbie Fowler’s autobiography, with the famed Liverpool striker referring to him as ‘a brilliant player, better than most of the other lads in the schoolboys’ team, including myself’. Tierney only played 58 games in total for this afternoon’s visitors, though is still referred affectionately as ‘Sir Francis’ by supporters!

took over the naming rights of the Doncaster Community Stadium from Keepmoat Homes. The multi-purpose stadium, home since 2007, is also used by Doncaster Rovers Belles Ladies Football Club and Doncaster Rugby League Club and was a host venue for the recent Rugby League World Cup. Rovers secured a 99-year operating lease from Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council in June 2012 to lead the management of the stadium and the venue has been key to their growth as a club on and of the field since moving from their long-established Belle Vue home.

League-hopping

Since the reorganisation of the Football League structure into four national divisions in 1958, Rovers have traditionally fluctuated between the lower two tiers, with eight spells in the basement division and nine in the third tier. Never a club to settle at a level for long, Doncaster also spent five seasons in the Conference and had two spells in the Championship, including a 12th place finish under Sean O’Driscoll in 2009-10 with a squad including club legends Billy Sharp and record appearance holder James Coppinger, as well as 13-times-capped Wales international midfielder John Oster and former Leeds United and Scotland goalkeeper Neil Sullivan. Rovers’ best-ever Football League finish was 11th in Division 2 in 1950-51 under player-manager Peter Doherty, after the Ireland international had led them to. The Third Division North title the previous season.

PAST MANAGER …

The likes of Dave Mackay, Lawrie McMenemy, Kerry Dixon, Dean Saunders and Brian Flynn have all enjoyed spells in the Rovers hot-seat, though arguably Doncaster’s most prestigious gaffer Is Leeds United and Scotland legend BILLY BREMNER, who had two stints in charge of the then Belle Vue based club. He first succeeded Stan Anderson in 1978 and immediately introduced youngsters such as Wales U21 international Daral Pugh, Ian Snodin, his brother Glynn, and Steve Lister, while signing experienced pros such as Alan Warboys, Ian Nimmo and Alan Little. The policy paid dividends as Doncaster won promotion to Division 3 a season after County in 1981 and, although relegated two years later, 54-times-capped Scotland midfielder Bremner returned the club to the third tier as runners-up to York City in 1984. After leaving to succeed Eddie Gray at his beloved Leeds in October 1985, he returned to Belle Vue in 1988, leading Rovers to the northern final of the Football League Trophy the following season. After a mid-table finish in 1990-91, Bremner resigned in November 1991, working as a radio pundit until his untimely death six years later, aged just 54. In the words of ‘The Doncaster Free Press, ‘he deserves to be remembered as one of Rovers’ finest managers.’

ROVERS TODAY … 200 up

Top scorer George Miller made his 200th career appearance against former club Walsall eight days ago, though it was not a happy occasion for the 24-year-old, as Michael Flynn’s in-form Saddlers defeated Rovers 2-0 at the Eco-Power Stadium. The summer signing, who moved to this afternoon’s visitors on a three-year deal from South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley spent last term on loan at Walsall and recalled to the club website:

‘Michael Flynn was quality with me, but Rovers have given me a home since then. I am really proud to get to 200 games. My youth team manager once told me that you are not a footballer until you have played 100 games so I have managed to double that. But in terms of league position, we are under-achieving now, given the quality we have in the squad. We want to be higher up the table, but there is time to fix that.’

HEAD COACH’S VIEW …

Danny Schofield, who was appointed to his post two months ago, after starting the season in a similar role at Huddersfield Town: ‘We always try to finish as high as we can and the top seven is where we want to be. I think performances have been good in spells but not consistent all the way through games. I think the players are buying into what we are asking of them.’

FAN’S VIEW …

Rovers supporter James McMahon with an open-ended approach to the season … and life in general, when speaking to ‘FourFourTwo’ magazine!

‘I feel more confident in extra-terrestrial life existing than in my ability to predict (where we will finish).’

He had a stint with Harrogate in their inaugural L2 season in 2020-21, making three appearances as a sub.

He also gained valuable experience via non-league loan spells locally at Poole Town and Eastleigh.

DANNY SCHOFIELD

HEAD COACH

Appointed in October to succeed Gary McSheffrey, who was in charge from last December but paid the price after failing to keep Rovers in League 1 last season or make an early challenge for an immediate return.

The 42-year-old has signed a one-year rolling contract and spoke of relishing the prospect of taking the reins at his hometown club.

Danny was most recently head coach at Championship side Huddersfield Town, having progressed from age group and B team level at the club, but was given only 10 weeks in the hot seat. He began coaching in the Leeds United Academy, working in their U23 set-up before a spell at Middlesbrough.

Danny’s professional playing career began with a decade in Huddersfield’s defence between 1998 and 2008 and among other clubs he also had stints with Yeovil Town, Millwall and Rotherham United. He moved into coaching following his retirement in 2016, the year he also graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a degree in Sports Science.
