TRADITIONS It was here at Newport Harbor High

that Gene Crain and Jim Newkirk began their long careers playing the wonderful game of baseball. The fields then were an all dirt JV diamond and a lumpy, grassy varsity field which was bordered by a turnip patch in left field and wide open spaces in right field. The dugouts were benches and there was no field house of any kind. Starting the season with a few dozen baseballs and an assortment of wood bats was the norm. There was sometimes one umpire, who often called the game from behind the pitcher. In spite of that some darn good baseball was played and some very good players emerged. Jim and Gene enjoyed every moment of their four years at Newport. Gene went on to excel at Pomona College and at the University of Chicago. Jim's career took him to Orange Coast College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Each achieved star honors and along the way won a championship or two. Following college both enjoyed many years of playing in stellar semi-pro leagues around southern California. But their most special years were at Newport. Long after retiring from baseball, Jim and Gene enjoyed some special years attending fantasy baseball camps at the LA Dodgers facility in Vero Beach, Florida. Among the many players they met and played alongside were Harmon Killebrew, Bob Feller, Don Drysdale, Warren Spahn, Catfish Hunter, Lou Brock and many other Hall of Famers. Mixed in among those years of playing ball, pursuing careers and raising children, Jim and Gene continued to stay in touch with the game. Gene was commissioner of little league baseball in Laguna Beach, while Jim coached his son's teams in the same league. Both attended many baseball games and supported the efforts of the large number of people who gave their time and dedicated many hours to keep youth baseball flourishing. It is in this spirit that both continue to offer financial support and with pride encourage the efforts of coaches, parents, players and administrators with the means to improve conditions necessary to keep playing baseball. Boosters 2018 Newport Harbor BASEBALL Boosters Welcome to the Newport Harbor High School Baseball 2018 season! The Fall and Winters seasons are behind us as we officially enter the 2018 spring baseball season. The NHHS baseball program features three teams this year; Varsity, Junior Varsity and Frosh/ Soph and the programs are at near capacity with 59 active players. This is an exciting time for the Newport Harbor Baseball program as Coach Chalmers and his staff have high expectations as they have worked and diligently prepared the players to compete in the always tough Sunset league. I would like to give special thanks to the program’s parents, sponsors and donors that have helped financially and with their time and talents to improve the baseball program. Material improvements have been made to the freshman field, needed equipment to maintain and groom both fields have been purchased and a new JV locker room area has been established. Our Sunday parent volunteers have worked throughout the course of the year to help make our fields look great. The program would not be what it is today without the endless support from our coaches, parents, volunteers and community donors. This season’s baseball season will produce many wonderful memories for players, coaches and parents alike. For those seniors, many will realize that the many years of youth and high school baseball is coming to an end. For the underclassmen, hopefully they will enjoy the experience along the way. As the umpires say, “Play Ball!” Jim Binford NHHS Boosters President 2018

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE 2018 spring athletic season is upon us, and the upcoming baseball season should be another exciting one as the Sunset League is filled with an abundance of talent everywhere. Sailor Baseball has been working hard all fall, is strongminded, and has taking care of all the little things for another strong showing in one of the most demanding high school baseball leagues in Southern California. It is also a great opportunity for our educational community to show its school spirit as spring weather brings everyone out to root for our boys. NHHS athletes, coaches, teachers, staff, students, and parents come together every week to cheer for a common goal: Sailor Baseball VICTORY. The Newport Harbor High School Baseball program tips off the 2018 season with Coach Evan Chalmers entering his 5th year as head coach. Last year, there were too many close games for the stomach and heart to withstand, but we found a way to make it interesting every inning--for many of us we see the life lessons in these crucial moments that our student-athletes can draw upon later in life. Never give in, never give up, and always compete at the best level possible-your team depends on it. As we prepare for a second league title, the last one coming seventy years ago in 1948, I know that Coach Chalmers will prepare our baseball players well. Coach Chalmers’ contagious enthusiasm for baseball and instilling character in his young men is shared by his dedicated coaching staff, and is well received by the Newport Harbor High School educational community. Duke Synder, legendary Dodger baseball center fielder, was quoted as saying: “Swing hard, in case they throw the ball where you’re swinging.” Swing at pitches that look good, have fun, and let’s get after it! It is through weight training, summer/fall leagues, practice, and games, that our young men develop an appreciation for team building and the will to persevere and trust while in our program. Learning to get along with teammates, to respect opponents, and to develop disciplined work habits provide athletes with the life-long skills and character that are essential traits for a successful life after high school. On behalf of Newport Harbor High School, I would like to thank Coach Chalmers, his coaching staff, our dedicated baseball players, and all the baseball parents and supporters who have devoted time and money to our program. I would like to thank, too, the many businesses that have pledged their support for the Newport Harbor High School Baseball program. Go Sailors! Sean Boulton Principal Newport Harbor High School

HEAD COACH’S MESSAGE It is a great honor to be the Head Coach of the Newport Harbor High School Baseball Program. We are very excited about our fifth season leading this great charge. I would like to thank the parents and boosters for your support. The overwhelming support of Newport Harbor Baseball throughout the community has really helped boost this program. On the behalf of the entire Newport Baseball Staff, I would like to extend a special thanks to the booster board that has spent countless hours planning events and raising funds to improve the baseball experience here at Newport Harbor. I would also like to thank the baseball coaching staff that has shown incredible patience and a year around commitment and the responsibility of challenging and mentoring these young men far beyond baseball. I would also like to thank Newport Harbor Principal Sean Boulton for changing the landscape of our high school with his administrative support and celebration of the strong tradition of athletics and academic excellence here at Newport Harbor. I also would like to thank our Athletic Director Jerry Murray for all of his support for Tars Baseball. All of our players have worked very hard in the off season in order to prepare for Sunset League play. This 2018 Varsity Baseball team has lots of experience. Last year we started two sophomores and a freshman. Many key veterans return for the Tars. (4 All Sunset League returners and 8 players who had started multiple games in 2017) This group will have both veteran leadership and young talent rounding out the roster of 23 players. Highlights on the schedule include our crosstown rival, Corona del Mar, on the big stage at UCI. The varsity schedule also includes another incredibly exciting opportunity of competing in a game at Anaheim Stadium vs Marina High School. This group is strong and well prepared to battle for a Sunset League Championship and an opportunity to compete in the CIF playoffs! Go Tars, Coach Evan Chalmers

Celebrating

1948 Team - Sunset League Champions ‘48 Newport Harbor baseball team won school’s only league title “One person does not make a championship in baseball – but darn close,” Bob Nettles said, referring to the Sailors’ left-handed ace hurler, Frank Hamilton, who showed up on Coach Wendell Pickens’ doorstep one day from Portland, Ore., as a senior transfer. Hamilton, who reportedly turned down a $50,000 offer from the New York Yankees because he wanted to go to college before attempting to play professional baseball, and catcher Bill Weatherwax were the primary cogs for Newport Harbor. “They were without a doubt the best (battery) combination in Southern California, or any other high school,” said Nettles, a midterm graduate who wasn’t eligible to play in ’48, but served as manager after playing first base and pitcher in ’47. Weatherwax, also a football standout at Newport, later enjoyed a four-year career in the minor leagues, making stops in Pocatella in the Pioneer League, Fresno in the California League, and Victoria, B.C., and Spokane in the Western International League. But the left-handed throwing Hamilton was the real deal on the mound and dominated Sunset League hitters, leading the Sailors to an 11-1 league record and berth in the CIF Southern Section semifinals. Hamilton “threw bullets” and had “impeccable control,” Nettles said. The school’s yearbook said Hamilton struck out 112 batters that season. Hamilton’s only pitching setback came in the CIF Southern Section semifinals against San Diego High School. Senior left fielder Boyd “Bogey” Horrell, the team’s leading hitter who batted .340, and right fielder Nourse were both returning lettermen and also sparked the ’48 Sailors. Newport Harbor’s only loss in 12 Sunset League games that season came against Anaheim in the league finale. Other players included sophomore pitcher Jack Clark, third baseman Bill Skiles, first baseman George Reeves, Bill James, Ray Jeffs, Bob Harris and Charles “Mac” Henrotin. Nourse was also the No. 2 pitcher behind Hamilton. Newport Harbor catcher Bill Weatherwax, however, was the member of the ’48 Sailors to make it in the professional ranks, playing four years in the minor leagues. Weatherwax is believed to be first baseball player to sign professionally directly out of Newport Harbor High. -GO TARS Newport Harbor Baseball Family
