Stewart Set to Retire, Hogan Named Manufacturing VP

NNS Announces Location of New Family Health Center

Becky Stewart, vice president of Manufacturing, will retire on March 1. Stewart began working at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1982 as a technical planner, and since then, she has served in a number of leadership positions.

On Jan. 15, Newport News Shipbuilding announced that its new family health center will be located on Washington Avenue between 45th and 46th Streets. The center is scheduled to open this fall and will offer primary care, an on-site pharmacy and laboratory services.

In a letter to employees on Jan. 20, NNS President Matt Mulherin thanked Stewart for her service and leadership during her more than 33 years at NNS. Mulherin also announced Rob Hogan’s promotion to vice president effective Feb. 23.

Why build the center at this location? To make the new health center accessible for all eligible employees, NNS decided to build the center as close to the center of the main shipyard as logistically possible while still making it accessible to family members. The close proximity of the new health center will also allow employees to walk from the South and North Yards as well as the downtown engineering campus. “We considered many locations,” said Bill Bell, vice president of Human Resources and Administration. “From locations in downtown Newport News to the NetCenter to Hampton. The health and safety of our employees and their families is a top priority, and we are excited to offer quality health care resources at a convenient location. Since this location would impact employee parking, the decision was not made lightly. However, I believe this was

the best choice given all the considerations we thought we should take into account.” The health center will be operated by QuadMed, a third-party vendor. Services will be available to eligible non-represented employees and their dependents who are covered by the Anthem consumer-driven health plan (CDHP) or preferred-provider option (PPO) plans. The HII Family Health Center at Newport News Shipbuilding is one of two new centers opening for eligible HII employees. A second family health center will be opened in Gautier, Miss., for employees and dependents of the company’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division. The centers are part of HII’s larger benefits strategy designed to engage employees and their families in their own health and wellness and make quality health care more accessible. The strategy also includes the recent addition of Teladoc, a program where employees can consult with board-certified physicians on non-emergency medical issues via telephone, mobile application or computer. Additionally, HII offers a preferred rate for health care insurance to eligible employees who have completed a tobacco-cessation program or attest they do not use tobacco.

NEW! Get to Know One City Marathon Runners The One City Marathon presented by Newport News Shipbuilding is Sunday, March 15. NNS runners will be featured in Currents each week leading up to the marathon. This week’s featured runner is NNS Program Control Manager Carl Killian. The One City Marathon will be Killian’s first complete marathon. Turn to p. 2 to view Killian’s runner profile. NNS employees are eligible for discounted registration at www.onecitymarathon.com. For more information or if you would like to join a relay team, contact Jeremy Bustin (O29) at 380-4384.

“Rob is a dedicated leader and advocate for our shipbuilders, and is focused on improving safety and engagement across the workforce,” Mulherin wrote. “He began his career... CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Additional Shuttles to Be Added to Transportation Schedule CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Employees who park at this location are encouraged to park at the Hidens North and North Yard parking lots and to use the shuttle bus service to get to their work sites. To improve accessibility to the Hidens North lot, NNS will add a 15-passenger van that will continuously loop between Hidens North parking area between 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. with stops on Washington Ave. at 43rd and 50th Streets. NNS will continue to monitor demand throughout the day to determine an appropriate level of service and will add resources as needed. Employees should visit the Parking website on Yardnet to view current shuttle schedules and are encouraged to continuously check the site, as more information will be added regularly. As a result of employee feedback, Bill Bell, vice president of Human Resources and Administration, has asked NNS’ Parking Committee to look at other solutions to improve parking around the shipyard. The committee is made up of representatives from Facilities, Navy Programs,

Engineering and Human Resources. The committee will use input from employees, Opportunity for Improvement (OFI) submissions and parking audits to develop additional parking solutions. Stephanie Simmons, director of Navy Programs, who leads the NNS Parking Committee, said, “We recognize that parking is a quality of life issue to our employees. The new health center is an investment in the health, safety and well-being of shipbuilders and their families. It is unfortunate that it will result in the loss of parking; however, the Parking Team will proactively make recommendations on how to best mitigate this loss to meet the dynamic needs of our employees.” Shipbuilders who have suggestions for the Parking Committee are encouraged to send their input to Communications@hii-nns.com. All shipbuilder feedback will be reviewed and considered by the committee.

I’m a Runner: Carl Killian Job Title: Test Engineering (E25) Work Control Manager Age: 51 Running: One City Marathon Classification: Triathlon athlete Training: 12-14 hours, 15-20 miles per week. Biggest Race: 35K Adventure Trial Run Favorite Courses in Hampton Roads: Noland Trail and Langley Air Force Base Motivation: My athletic endeavors pretty much ended when I graduated high school at 17. I found myself clinically obese at the age of 46 and decided something had to change. All the numbers and doctors were telling me that I wouldn’t live past the age of 52. I had gastric bypass surgery and started cycling. That led to running, and now swimming—the complete triathlon package.

Outlook: I’m a happier person because I’m fit. We’re going to have whatever problems we’re going to have. But one thing you can change is how you feel and how you interact with people. Work Application: Fitness has allowed me to explore and enhance my leadership and has changed my dynamic and how I interact with my employees. Company Involvement: It’s very positive when the shipyard connects to the community in an event like the One City Marathon. It shows that NNS is genuinely invested in and cares about the community. Advice: Just start. Sure, set a goal and figure out the details. But do NOT let all that get in the way of actually beginning. If you wait to figure out all the details first you will never start.

Run the Marathon as a Relay Teams of up to four people can share the 26.2 mile marathon course that spans from Newport News Park to Victory Landing Park. NNS employees are able to participate in the relay race at a discounted rate of $50 per person. Do you want NNS to pay for your relay team? Send an email with the subject “Free Relay” to Jeremy Bustin (O29) and 10 teams will be selected to receive free registration for their entire team (up to 4 people). To qualify, you must send the name of each person on your relay team and a phone number where we can reach you. Note: Each member on the team must be an NNS employee. Winning entries will be selected by Jan. 30. For questions contact Jeremy at 380-4384.

AROUND THE YARD

NNS RadCon and VCU Work Together on Neutron Detection Newport News Shipbuilding is working with Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering program to support their radiation laboratory and to develop a pipeline for graduating nuclear engineering students to join the company. One of VCU’s major research projects is the inertial electrostatic confinement fusion reactor. The student research team built the device and achieved nuclear fusion reactions for the first time last year. The fusion reactor will be used both as a learning and research tool.

NAVSEA Audit of PCU John Warner (SSN 785)

Weight Watchers at Work Open House is Jan. 21

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) will conduct their Phase II SUBSAFE Certification Audit and Fly-By-Wire Ship Control System Certification Audit of PCU John Warner (SSN 785) the week of Feb. 9. This is one of the last major milestones in the process of submarine certification – one that will provide NAVSEA the opportunity to examine records and the ship to validate the SUBSAFE and FBW SCS material condition. The certification process will provide confidence that the ship will be ready to commence Fast Cruise and Sea Trials in March. For more information, contact NNS SUBSAFE Program Manager Sean Coons at 688-1595.

HealthWaves will be holding a Weight Watchers Open House at 4 p.m. on Jan. 21 in Bldg. 903-2 (conference room 214). All shipbuilders are invited to attend. During the open house, Susan Burke, Weight Watchers leader, will tell her success story about how she became a lifetime member. Attendees will also learn about the Weight Watchers program and how weekly meetings will be organized. For more information, contact Becky Johnson at 380-7380.

Take Office Services “Libraries” Online Survey The Office Services (O14) Specification and Technical Libraries serve thousands of employees each year. The libraries are busy planning for enhancements and changes in 2015. Shipbuilders are encouraged to take a five-minute survey to help O14 better serve employee needs.

... with NNS in 1976 as a welder and has held positions at all levels of production and construction leadership. His most recent position was director of Manufacturing for Steel Fabrication. He has worked and supported this division since 1997, and has always looked for new and innovative opportunities to improve efficiency while also improving the shipbuilders’ work environment and the tools and equipment they use. He is a proven leader here at NNS, and externally through his involvement on many professional manufacturing organizations.”

Recently, the university experienced problems with their helium-3 neutron detection system. This detector is crucial to measure fast neutron radiation created by the nuclear fusion process. NNS’ Health Physics Group in the Radiological Control (RadCon) Department brought the VCU student research team to the shipyard on Nov. 21 to troubleshoot detector system performance and help identify other areas of assistance with their laboratory. “The collaboration between NNS and VCU is a good partnership because it allows us to support VCU’s growing nuclear engineering program, and in doing so, we get to learn more about the capabilities and applications of the technology we use every day,” said Samantha Whitehead. “The students came to NNS and enjoyed seeing the scope of work that we do here at the shipyard, especially when they saw how much of it directly applied to what they were learning in their classes. They also enjoyed touring USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), because some of them had never seen a carrier before.” A VCU Nuclear Engineering student explains the process behind designing the fusion reactor during a recent VCU Student Expo.
