Career Pathways Participates in Engineering Career Days More than 400 local high school students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities while learning about engineering careers during Engineering Career Days Feb. 22-23 at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton. A girder section of Newport News Shipbuilding's new Goliath gantry crane is loaded onto a ship in Gdynia, Poland. The new crane will replace the green crane currently at dry docks 10 and 11. The ship is now making its way to Newport News.

New Crane Sets Sail to NNS A ship carrying major components of Newport News Shipbuilding’s new 315-metric-ton Goliath gantry crane left Gdynia, Poland, Friday, March 2, to begin the trek to Newport News. A second ship – carrying the remaining components – is scheduled to leave this week.

Newport News Shipbuilding's Career Pathways joined forces with the Peninsula Engineers Council, NASA and Jefferson Lab for the annual event, which attracts students from across Hampton Roads. Several NNS employees participated, giving students an overview of their work and leading them... CONTINUED ON PG 3

The trip is expected to take about two weeks. “We’re excited about getting the crane to Newport News. Once assembled, it will change the skyline,” said Brian Jones (O48), whose team is managing the replacement project along with shipbuilders from Plant Engineering (O41), Waterfront Support Services (X36) and Supply Chain Management Compliance, Operations and Commercial Procurement (O55). Jones and members of his team were on hand last week as crane components were loaded onto the ships in Poland. “I’m nervous and excited at the same time,” said Debbie Jennette (O48), who has worked on the project alongside Jones for several years. “I’m nervous because of the long trek that it has to take across the Atlantic Ocean, but I’m excited that it’s finally coming.” The new crane will replace NNS’ 49-year-old green Goliath gantry crane. The new crane is blue and will resemble the 1,050-ton crane in the North Yard, better known as “Big Blue.” At 241 feet tall, the new blue crane will be even taller than “Big Blue,” which stands 230 feet. In addition to Poland, NNS engineers, technicians and trades personnel visited Ohio – where... CONTINUED ON PG 2

...the electrical control system was designed and built – and Germany – where the mechanical structural systems were designed – to oversee the design and fabrication of the crane’s components. This week, shipbuilders will notice a large mobile crane being brought into the yard on several trucks. It will be used to erect the new gantry crane. Once the ships carrying the new crane’s components arrive at NNS later this month, they will be unloaded in the North Yard, placed on transporters and taken to the project site. “It’s going to be a little disruptive to people in the yard, but we’re

trying to minimize that as much as we can,” Jones said. “Once we get everything within our fenced-in area, it shouldn’t impact people on a daily basis.” He expects the new crane to be “in the air” by midsummer and operational next year. “We thank everyone across the shipyard for their continued support of this project,” Jones said.

Women's History Month: Sarah Gentry March is Women’s History Month. The theme for this year’s Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) monthly recognition campaign is "Unite Our Voices by Speaking Together." As part of the campaign, four employees will be featured during each recognition month – two from within the featured demographic and two outside of it. Employees will share personal stories, insight and perspectives on what the month means to them. Features will be published in Currents, the NNS to Go app, MyNNS and HII social media channels. When Sarah Gentry (K45/X11) reflects on Women’s History Month, two women immediately come to mind – her mother and grandmother. “These two women have been extremely influential in my life,” she said. “They are two of the strongest women I know and they’ve taught me that having a good life means working hard and sometimes making sacrifices. They showed me that when times are tough, never give up. When someone puts you down, get back up and prove them wrong – prove your worth.” Today, Gentry is one of only eight female general foremen at NNS – and the youngest female to hold the position.

“I like to think I’ve made my family proud,” she said. “By crushing stereotypes and inspiring others through hard work, determination and confidence – I want others to see what is possible.” Gentry admits that working in a maledominated workplace can be a challenge at times. “Some people assume that because you are a woman, you’ll act a certain way when a situation arises. I’ve also had people tell me that I wouldn’t make it or I wouldn’t be able to do things because of my gender, but I persisted and succeeded.” She added, “By being in a leadership position at NNS, I have the opportunity to show how women can be successful and inspire others to pursue advancement within the company.” As a general foreman, she says that the best part about her job is getting the opportunity to work with great people and being able to positively impact her crews. “I do what I can to provide my team with the knowledge and tools to be the best shipbuilder they can be,” she said. “I’m successful only when they are performing at their best.” A member of The Apprentice School’s Class of 2011, Gentry is actively involved with

the school and apprentice organizations. “It's exciting work with apprentices from all different backgrounds,” she said. “I try to influence them in similar ways my mother and grandmother influenced me.” She said, “I want to be remembered as a woman of virtue and a motivating leader who made a positive difference in people's lives and careers.” View Gentry's poster on MyNNS. Shipbuilder Makes Surprise Discovery When Sierra Rockwell (O67) placed the winning bid in an online auction a few weeks ago, she had no idea she’d end up finding Newport News Shipbuilding history. “The auction was for a bundle of stuff. There was an old galvanized trunk – which is what I really wanted – a safe and a wooden desk,” she said. A few days after she picked up the items – for which she paid less than $5 – Rockwell pried open the safe. That’s where she found a collection of NNS publications like Shipyard Bulletins and Masthead magazines dating back to the 1920s. The collection isn’t complete. The oldest publication is a Shipyard Bulletin from 1927 with a headline celebrating an accident-free week at NNS. Another issue heralds the use of tractors instead of mules to carry lumber through the yard. The most recent publications are Masthead magazines from the 1980s that had been mailed to the home of a former shipbuilder. “I thought it was interesting that they dated back so far. I also thought it was cool that I found them and not someone who doesn’t work for the shipyard,” Rockwell said. “Someone who doesn’t work here might have just tossed them.” She decided to bring the collection in to work to show her supervisor, but soon realized other shipbuilders were also interested. “At one point, I probably had 25 people in my cube,” she said.

Despite their age, the publications are all in good shape. Rockwell said the most striking issues to her were published during World War II. “There are a lot of war pictures, and they list the ships that survived or were destroyed in battles,” she said. “There’s all kinds of history. There are also photos of women welding during the war, and all they have on are these little sunglasses.”

...in an engineering design challenge that involved building boats with duct tape. Chris Story (O31), this year’s winner of the Peninsula Engineers Council’s Doug Ensor Young Engineer Award, presented awards to the student winners of the engineering design challenge. Leslie Schmidt (O37) was among the shipbuilders representing Welding Engineering at the event. She was encouraged to see young women interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. “It is exciting for me because I enjoy what I do, and I want to encourage others to try it as well. I want women to know that while this is a predominantly male field, there are women who have chosen this career path and are successful,” Schmidt said. “I enjoy sharing my journey with those who are interested,

especially if they are initially hesitant.” Fellow shipbuilder Nicholas Pinco (E46) said events like Engineering Career Days are important because they give students a glimpse of what they can do with a STEM degree. “Finding the thing you are passionate about can be difficult, and events like this help provide them a starting point in that process,” he said. “My hope is that each student walked away with something that piqued their interest.” Career Pathways Representative Pierrette Swan (K18) said the event is popular with students and educators. “Several teachers told me that this is their favorite field trip of the year because it’s so interactive for their students,” she said.

3 | 5 | 2018 With increasing project management requirements and the need to support implementation and change from VBM, construction supervisors learned how to obtain a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. The certification boot camp program will give the construction supervisors an opportunity to broaden and expand their project management foundational knowledge and principles to increase their abilities to perform project plans and implement new methodologies and tools like VBM.

Project Management Opportunities Available for Construction Supervisors Structural Fabrication Assembly (SFA), Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) and John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) construction supervisors learned more about the new Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) Visual Build Management (VBM) system and opportunities for professional development in project management during presentations in February. Ian Slagle (X45), the iDS VBM project owner, and Ashley Cadwallader (X44), the Project Management Institute – Newport News Shipbuilding (PMI-NNS) chairperson, gave the presentations. VBM integrates the 3-D model and critical chain project management philosophies to plan complex build sequences, manage material and resources, and track work packages. VBM also improves Newport News Shipbuilding’s ability to generate and respond to advanced work execution signals and allows the value stream to understand and react to dynamic environments more efficiently. This new toolset will be fully implemented for Enterprise (CVN 80), VCS Block V payload modules and Columbia-class submarines.

Elizabeth Cooke (X10), who attended one of the sessions, said she was excited to learn about the opportunity to obtain a CAPM certification. “Not every company offers this kind of investment in their employees. It’s not always easy to work on these types of goals individually, but the boot camp provides a support system of people to study with and encourage one another,” she said. Fellow participant Council Pickett (X91) said, “I believe that taking advantage of the PMP certification and boot camp program will greatly enhance how I manage the projects in my area of responsibility, improve my critical thinking, and ultimately improve me as a professional and as a project manager. We have to be prepared for the challenge in the future and this is one step in that direction.” The program is offered to all NNS construction supervisors. For more information on the Construction Supervisor CAPM/PMP Boot Camp, contact Debra Brand (E70) via email or at 688-1712.

Shipbuilders Attend Cybersecurity Summit Four members of E44’s Cybersecurity team – Gregory Braxton, Terrell Jones, Brandon Gregory and Steve Andrews – attended Regent University’s Executive Series Cybersecurity Summit Feb. 15. The event featured guest speakers from Google, CybInt, GE Healthcare and GRIMM, as well as panelists from Hewlett Packard, the FBI, Eastern Virginia Medical School and Regent University. The summit also featured a separate session with Kevin Mitnick, CEO of Mitnick Security Consulting. He has been called “the world’s most famous hacker.” Braxton engaged with the speakers to discuss their organizations' efforts to address human factors in relation to cybersecurity. Braxton

noted that all of the hacking activities demonstrated by Mitnick, including physically breaking into a bank, “were achieved through social engineering techniques and not through the use of software hacking tools to circumvent the technical security controls in place.” Gregory added, “It is important that we bring these conversations back to our organization, both for the security of our internal information systems and for the systems we design for the customer.” One of the team's biggest takeaways from the event was the importance of social engineering in cybersecurity. Many people assume cybersecurity attacks are purely technical in nature and fail to realize how valuable social engineering is to a hacker.

After a fall rendered a shipbuilder unconscious, Ovide quickly found Susan Jacobs, vice president of Human Resources and Administration, and Security to inform them of the accident. As a result, paramedics were called to treat the injured shipbuilder. Ovide also got the injured shipbuilder’s last name, which was used in an attempt to find her husband, who was not with her at the time of the fall. Jacobs recently met with Ovide to thank him for “going the extra mile” and to present him with the award.
