Personal Camera-Enabled Devices Allowed on NNS Property Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin sent a video message to employees last week announcing that personal camera-enabled devices (PCED) would be allowed inside the shipyard starting Monday, May 2. During the Delaware keel laying ceremony on April 30, Newport News Shipbuilding welder L.A. Britt welds ship’s sponsor Dr. Jill Biden’s initials into a plate that will be permanently affixed to the submarine, symbolizing her lifelong relationship with the shipbuilders and crew. NNS Lays Keel for Delaware On April 30, Newport News Shipbuilding celebrated the keel laying of the Virginia-class submarine Delaware (SSN 791) with Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady of the United States and ship’s sponsor. During the ceremony, she declared the keel “truly and fairly laid.” The keel laying signifies the ceremonial start of construction for the newest U.S. Navy vessel named for “The First State.” In her remarks, Biden addressed the crew of Delaware not just as the ship’s sponsor, but as a military mother and grandmother. “It’s our duty to make sure that you have everything you need to stay safe and do your jobs,” Biden said. “You need the very best equipment and advanced technology that we can provide, and soon that will include the USS Delaware, thanks to the ingenuity and skill of the shipbuilders before us.” Other ceremony participants included Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe; Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Del.; Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Va.; Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va.; Vice Adm. Joseph Tofalo, commander of Submarine Forces, Submarine Forces Atlantic and Allied Submarine Command; Matt Mulherin, president, Newport News Shipbuilding; and Jeffrey S. Geiger, president, General Dynamics Electric Boat.

In the message, Mulherin said that he believed that updating the policy would be a good change for the company. He also noted that the change comes with a lot of responsibility. “...The responsibility to stay focused on the work at hand, to not be distracted, and to ensure that no one without authorization uses the camera and video functions while at the shipyard. It’s our responsibility to protect our business, our products and ultimately the men and women who will use the great ships we built to protect our nation,” he said. Employees are encouraged to take time to visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/pced on the company’s public website to review the video message, an updated list of frequently asked questions, employee tips and other resources regarding the policy. As a reminder, all unauthorized use of photo and video should be reported to the Security Command Center at 380-4031.

In his remarks, McAuliffe addressed the importance of the shipbuilding industry in Virginia. “I want to thank the greatest shipbuilders in the entire world that we have here right at Newport News,” McAuliffe said. “No other state can say this: 28,500 shipbuilders—one out of five in the United States of America—are here in the Commonwealth of Virginia.” More than 4,000 shipbuilders support the construction of Delaware. The submarine will be the newest Navy vessel named for the country’s first state, following the dreadnought battleship USS Delaware (BB 28) that was delivered by Newport News in 1910.

Congratulations Ethics On-the-Spot Award Winner Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, presented shipbuilder Ronald Meyer (O46) a level one On-theSpot Ethics Award on April 20 for his ethical behavior. Meyer reported that a section of the wood piling/fendering system for the north crane rail of the Dry Dock 10 and 11 gantry crane was knocked loose by wave action during one of the winter storms. It appeared to be causing damage to the crane rail support. Until further evaluation, the crane has been prevented from moving over that section of the crane rail.

NNS Vice President Honored as YWCA Woman of Distinction On Thursday, April 28, Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, was presented with the 2016 Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) Women of Distinction Award. “We are thrilled to celebrate Jennifer and her accomplishments in the STEM and engineering fields,” said Mary Kate Andris, president and CEO, YWCA South Hampton Roads. “She has served as an outstanding role model for young women who want to pursue careers in engineering, therefore empowering women to believe they can succeed. We are pleased to recognize her as a 2016 YWCA South Hampton Roads Woman of Distinction.” The award, presented to Boykin, honors women who have achieved, overcome and blazed a

trail for other women through their professional leadership, volunteer efforts and civic involvement. The award considers honorees for contributions in 12 key categories: arts, business, communications, education, finance, government, law, medicine, military, non-profit, science and technology, and volunteerism. Boykin was nominated in the science and technology category by Tricia Hudson, president of Strategic Solutions by Tricia. “Jennifer is a role model for all women and has succeeded in her profession, which is an especially male-dominated environment,” Hudson said. “I have great respect for Jennifer for what she does in the Hampton Roads community to advance STEM education, encourage young girls to explore STEM-related

professions, and serve at-risk populations by ensuring they have access to information, training and hands-on application in STEMrelated fields.”

AROUND THE YARD NNS Establishes TIME Team to Improve Timekeeping Systems Shipbuilders Participate in “Fit Family” Challenge In January, more than 380 employees and family members participated in a 10-week “Fit Family” Challenge. The challenge encouraged employees and their family to focus on the importance of living a healthful lifestyle. Carol Goforth (O16) participated in the challenge with her family. “We started with walking to the local grocery store and playing Wii Fit together,” she said. “I also introduced my 15 year old daughter to new foods such as beets, radishes and soy milk.” Patrick Rhodes (E84) also participated in the program with his family. “We used our farm as the playground for this challenge,” he said. “Instead of running on the treadmill, we ran with the cows and horses. In the end, I was able to lose 12 pounds.” To learn more about wellness program offerings, contact Emily McCarley (O28) at 380-4578.

A Time Improvement, Management and Education (TIME) team, led by Sheet Metal Trade Director Chandra McCulley-Hooker, has been established to do a comprehensive evaluation of NNS’ timekeeping environment. Representatives from various divisions and programs across the shipyard have been assigned to the team and their efforts will include every aspect of timekeeping culture from requirements, policies, procedures, training, time-entry to approval and reporting. If you have questions, comments or concerns about the project, please contact the representative for your division or program.

NNS to Recognize Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month Newport News Shipbuilding will recognize Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month throughout the month of May. Posters will be on display in various locations around the yard. View the poster on Yardnet.

NNS Lays Keel for Delaware CONTINUED FROM PG 1

“While Jill Biden’s initials may be the only ones visible today, this submarine also carries with it the names of her shipbuilders,” Mulherin said. “Shipbuilders who sign their name to each and every job they perform, shipbuilders who put safety and quality above all else, and shipbuilders who I have the utmost respect for and complete and total confidence in.” Delaware is the final ship of the Block III submarines built under a unique teaming agreement between Newport News and General Dynamics Electric Boat. “Through the effort of this team, the Virginia program has distinguished itself by setting new standards for cost-effective design and construction and advanced mission capabilities for the Navy,” Geiger said. “It’s now a busy time for our team, and we are fortunate to be engaged in a sustained period of increased submarine production. The newest, the Delaware, stands out as a remarkable example of applied and integrated technology, along with the ships of the class that have come before it.” Construction on Delaware began in September 2013. The submarine is about 56 percent complete and is on track for delivery in 2018. Watch a highlights video on Yardnet from the keel laying ceremony.
