Pipe Shop Welcomes “The Pinball Machine” On April 28, the Pipe Shop held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to welcome “The Pinball Machine” to its electric pipe bending inventory. The dual-headed bender that uses laser spring back correction, was named for its two bend heads that look like pinball flippers. Manufacturing Engineer Nick Brady (X59) said, “The team implemented new features on the machine such as an accurate 3-D simulation and empty bend tooling, all of which, will help reduce cost, improve safety, and increase engagement.” During the ceremony, Pipe Bending Specialist Robin Moody (X42) operated the first bend. “I’ve been here 32 years and this is a great machine that is easier, safer and faster to operate,” he said. Facilities Project Engineer Curtis Armstrong (O41) led the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon. “The installation and commissioning of the new machine was successful, due to the great teamwork and partnership between the Pipe Shop, Manufacturing Engineering, Facilities, Maintenance, Planning, Information Technology, and the machine’s manufacture, Unison Ltd.,” he said. “The team fully committed to a goal of integrating safety, ergonomics, 5-S, and technology that led to this cutting-edge innovation.”
May is National Electrical Safety Month Newport News Shipbuilding’s Electrical Department (X31) is taking part in National Electrical Safety Month by raising awareness about electrical safety. The department has placed posters and banners around the yard from Pier 2 to Dry Dock 12 and at nine of the turnstiles in honor of the month. “Raising awareness about electrical hazards is the key to reducing home electrical fires, injuries and even death,” said X31 Trade Director David Batdorf. “Whether employees are at home or at work, electrical safety is important at all times. Our goal is to educate employees on small things that they can do to improve the electrical environment around them.” The department also handed out small gifts and released a newsletter and a short video featuring several electricians and their “Words of Wisdom” regarding electrical safety. Watch the video highlighting Electrical Safety Month on Yardnet.

Employees React to NNS’ Personal Camera-Enabled Device Policy CONTINUED FROM PG 1
“Whether it’s a call from the school nurse or the day care center, it’s nice to have the ability to have contact with your family about the important things.” Roger Minton, X11 Fitter
“Even though I have been here for 25 years, I enjoy the advancements that have been made in modern technologies. I’m looking forward to seeing how the policy update will allow the company to expand its abilities to stay competitive with the new industries and what advantages it will give to our engineers to allow for even better products.” Edward McDaniel Jr., X52 Engineer Planning Analyst “I will continue to carry my non-camera phone because there are still areas of the yard where the phones are restricted. I just don’t want to take that chance.” Bob Downin, X18 Welder
“I’ve been bringing my phone to work. I like being able to check my accounts on break and the fact I can possibly get rid of my second phone, which will save me money. I’m hoping the policy will remain in effect.” Tiffany Volk, O38 Inspector
“I like the policy change because in the past, if you missed a call from a doctor’s office, you receive the voicemail when you get to the car, and sometimes it is too late in the day and the business would be closed. Now I can receive my voicemails and return calls at lunch.” Brandon Bowling, X11 Fitter
“I work 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and now my husband and kids have direct access to call me if needed. I’m grateful the company is moving forward with time.” Tangela Wagner-Edmond, X91/X33 Coatings/Blast Foreman
Visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/PCED on NNS’ public website to view a list of frequently asked questions (FAQS), employee tips and other resources regarding the policy. The “Control of Personally-Owned Camera-Enabled Devices” policy is available for viewing in Command Media on Yardnet.

ISO Audits Planned May 23-25 Newport News Shipbuilding will undergo a surveillance audit of its Environmental Management System (EMS) and recertification audit of its Quality Management System (QMS) May 23-25. The American Bureau of Shipbuilding Quality Evaluations (ABS-QE) will conduct these audits. These audits will continue as an “integrated” approach in evaluating key areas of these two management systems. This means that personnel involved with discussions with the auditors will likely be questioned on both quality and environmental aspects of their work.
Environmental Management System (EMS) Audit Selected parts of the ISO standard 14001 will be audited. Employees may be stopped by auditors and interviewed about general awareness of the company’s environmental policy or how their job could affect the environment. Employees can refer to their green ISO 14001 badge cards or the O27 Environmental, Health and Safety Yardnet website as a reminder of the shipyard’s environmental policy. We are looking forward to another successful audit to maintain the shipyard’s ISO 14001 certification for the Environmental Management System. The shipyard was originally awarded in 2003 and has renewed the certification every three years since. For more information, contact Dwain Jenkins (O27) at 534-4066.
Quality Management System Audit The audit team will review work documents associated with many of the areas of the shipyard, including records for equipment calibration, training, production control, product testing, internal audits, and corrective and preventive actions. Auditors may also request to randomly interview employees in both nuclear and non-nuclear work areas about work procedures to evaluate their work practices, overall awareness of Newport News’ quality management policies and the knowledge of the impact their work has. Employees should answer questions about how they normally accomplish their work. During the last audit, several people and departments were asked about their work processes. Managers, general foremen and supervisors should emphasize to employees the importance of having knowledge of their work procedures and working to authorized procedures and drawings. A successful audit will maintain the shipyard’s ISO 9001 certificate for the Quality Management System. The shipyard was first certified to ISO 9001 in 1993 and has renewed the certification every three years since. For more information, contact Tony Burger (O06) at 534-3222.
