Shipbuilders, Family and Friends Participate in NNS 5K More than 1,400 participants took part in this year’s NNS 5K on Saturday, May 21. The annual event is held to promote health and fitness for the entire family. The 5K started at Victory Landing Park near the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) and continued north on West Avenue to 35th Street. From 35th Street, participants crossed over to Washington Avenue and proceeded north to 50th Street before returning to cross the finish line at Victory Landing Park. “I’ve really enjoyed participating in local events like the NNS 5K. My motivation to stay fit comes from my family pastor Rodney Pierce (E85) and co-worker James Herring (N960),” said Newport News Industrial Mechanical Technician Landon Pierce, who ran the 5K over the weekend. “For employees that say they don’t have the time to get out and run or walk, I would say to them to start now, while they are able to.” Turn to p. 4 to view a list of this year’s winners. Watch a highlights video from the NNS 5K on Yardnet.

NNS Showcases Digital Shipbuilding at Sea-Air-Space The 2016 Sea-Air-Space Exposition was held at the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor May 16-18. Huntington Ingalls Industries’ booth offered visitors information on current and future Navy and Coast Guard programs; gave attendees and media exclusive access to the Undersea Solutions Group’s dual-mode underwater vehicle Proteus; and held facilitated supplier and other customer discussions on key shipbuilding programs at both Newport News and Ingalls.

Rotation Program Graduates CONTINUED FROM PG 1
Brian Fields, vice president of Integrated Planning and Production Control, was the keynote speaker and challenged the graduates to continue to demonstrate courage to make a difference in their careers and in the business. “I am so enthusiastic about the marks you have made on our business and the innovations that you have brought to it,” he said. Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, pioneered the program in 2013, which is designed to develop emerging leaders of Newport News Shipbuilding. Participants rotate every six months into new areas of the shipyard to increase their awareness and understanding of various value stream processes. The program has expanded beyond E&D and now includes participants that represent 14 different divisions. Currently, the program has approximately 70 active participants and 46 graduates. For more information, visit the E&D Rotation Program website on Yardnet. For questions about the program, contact Rotation Program Manager Wayne Potter (E68) at 688-1274.

Shipbuilders Take Pride in Cleaning Up the James River On May 19, a team from the Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Division volunteered to remove trash from the James River water line off Shipways 5 and 6. The effort was in support of the James River Association and the on-going efforts of preserving America’s founding river. The significance of the scheduled effort was also in honor of Endangered Species Day on May 20. Plastics and styrofoam can collect along the river, and if not removed, can have negative impacts on endangered species. “The shipyard owes much to this great river and it is a good feeling to be a part of this effort,” said Safety and Health Carrier Support Manager Dane Byrant (O27). “Our great ships have used this river for 130 years and it’s an honor to help keep it clean.” The EH&S Division continues to look for opportunities throughout the shipyard where they can make a positive impact by making our work safer and support the workforce with being good stewards of the James River. To learn more about this on-going effort or to provide feedback, contact Steven Brinkman (O27) at 688-9247.

May is Better Hearing Month The Clinic’s audiology staff at Newport News Shipbuilding would like to remind employees that May is Better Hearing Month. Approximately 36 million Americans have hearing loss and it is noted as the third most common health problem in the U.S. Hearing loss from noise exposure can be prevented by use of proper hearing protection. Hearing protection decreases the intensity or loudness of noise. Never wear caps, head coverings, earrings, that could interfere with the proper fit of ear muffs. Remember that use of hearing protection does not stop when you walk out of the gates. Many individuals cut lawns, use power tools, attend car races or loud concerts, and use firearms. Remember to protect your hearing and continue to enjoy the sounds of life.
