NDT Inspectors Save Months Going Digital Over the last few years, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspectors started using a newer technique called Eddy-Current testing (ET). This process involves gliding a small stylus over the surface of a weld – like using a highlighter on paper – and watching a connected screen that shows any hidden cracks or air pockets in the weld. Ergonomically, it’s a lot easier to hold a tiny stylus then a heavy magnet. NDT Manager Ralph Motley advocated the technique for years, seeing it becoming a standard in the industry. Last year, apprentice Francisco Sisneros added another layer to the idea while working with the integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) team. He saw that 3-D visual work instructions could help the inspectors identify each weld joint on a painted unit, eliminating the need to re-label each joint for inspection. This meant that the welders could completely finish a unit, send it to blast and coat, and then the inspectors could inspect all the welds at once. In January, they took the idea for a test drive, using it to inspect a unit of a Virginia-class submarine (VCS) with 691 weld joints. They completed the inspection in just five days. The inspection process for the same unit on the previous submarine took 180 days. “I had two weeks left with the digital shipbuilding team, so I just sat down and figured out how to make what was in my mind,” said Sisneros. “It made me feel like I had the ability to make a difference.” In April, the inspectors applied the idea on another unit called the VCS Lab Array, the complex structure that houses much of the submarine’s advanced listening systems. Another apprentice, Shawn Morro, developed the 3-D visual instructions. Working back-to-back shifts, the inspectors completed more than 300 welds in two days. The same job the year before took 67 inspection days over a period of nine months. NDT Manager Jerry Campbell was ecstatic. “We have definitely set the bar of manufacturing components using the blast and coat process with ET as the preferred inspection method,” said Campbell. “The welders achieved a 100 percent pass rate. Overall, we reduced the schedule for this job by 97 percent, and our inspectors performed their job in 87 percent fewer man hours.”
HII Awarded Advance Planning Contract for Enterprise (CVN 80) Last week, Huntington Ingalls Industries was awarded a $152 million contract for advance planning for the construction of the aircraft carrier Enterprise (CVN 80). The third aircraft carrier in the Gerald R. Ford class was named in honor of the U.S. Navy’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN 65). The work, which includes engineering, design, planning and procurement of long-lead-time material, will be performed at the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division through March 2018. Construction on Enterprise is slated to begin in 2018 with delivery to the Navy in 2027. The new Enterprise will eventually replace the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) when... CONTINUED ON PG 2

Rendering of Enterprise (CVN 80).
HII Awarded Advance Planning Contract for Enterprise (CVN 80) CONTINUED FROM PG 1
...the aircraft carrier enters the fleet. “We are eager to begin planning and purchasing long-lead-time material for the next Enterprise,” said Mike Shawcross, vice president of CVN 79 and CVN 80 Construction. “Advance planning allows us to begin applying lessons learned from CVN 78 and CVN 79 more effectively, while providing stability to our workforce and the industrial base, in order to deliver the ship at the lowest cost possible.” Shipbuilders have captured thousands of lessons learned in the process of building Gerald R. Ford, most of which are being implemented as cost-saving initiatives in building the second ship in the class, John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). These initiatives will continue on Enterprise, and HII will work with the Navy to identify additional cost-saving initiatives for future Ford-class carrier construction.

Apprentices Complete Leadership Program Twenty-five apprentices completed The Apprentice School Leadership Experience at the College of William and Mary on May 13. The sixth cohort represented apprentices from the Frontline FAST Waterfront Leadership Development Program and Advanced Shipyard Operations Curriculum Optional Advanced Program. During the week-long event, William and Mary professors and executive partners led apprentices in a series of activities and exercises to enhance their leadership skills. Huntington Ingalls Industries President and CEO Mike Petters and Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin were among the shipbuilding leaders who shared their leadership experiences with the cohort and provided insights on how to apply leadership principles every day. “The apprentices get the best of both Newport News Shipbuilding and William and Mary to challenge their view of leadership and their role as future leaders in the company,” said Supervising Academic Instructor Stan Best (O22). The weeklong experience concluded with Newport News Shipbuilding Vice President of Operations Ray Bagley, who hosted a leadership discussion with the cohort.

Employees’ Future Shaped by Adversity Engineering Manager Oliver Aguilar (E83) knows what it means to be a product of experiences and how those experiences can shape the future. Born in El Savador, a small Central American country and raised by a single mother, Aguilar had a great, but short-lived childhood. At the age of 6, his world drastically changed, when the county found itself at the start of a brutal civil war that would last for 12 years and kill an estimated 75,000 people. Aguilar says he and his brother saw and heard things no child should see or hear at the ages of 10 and 12 and became candidates to be drafted. In order to ensure that they would not be sent to fight the war, their mother decided to flee the country with no financial means for their future. Although they endured many challenges along their journey, on Aguilar’s birthday, July 26, 1987, they crossed the border between Mexico and the United States. This set the path that has shaped Aguilar’s future in becoming a U.S. citizen, a successful engineer and a proud husband and father. “I have learned that to be successful you have to take risks,” said Aguilar. My mother would have been happy speaking the same language, having a home for her kids, and living in a familiar country, but she took a great risk to leave all that behind for the better. This is directly transferable to our work life, we can choose to remain in the familiar, but growth comes when you decide to leave the familiar and take a risk in learning something new.” “I hope we can all embrace our similarities and differences as we embark on a successful path to be a more inclusive and diverse workforce.” To read Oliver Aguilar’s full story, visit the HII Valuing Diversity and Inclusion website.
