A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
NNS Dedicates 14th Habitat for Humanity House ewport News Shipbuilding joined elected officials and community N leaders Wednesday, June 1, to dedicate the 14th house shipyard volunteers have constructed in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. The dedication ceremony welcomed Effrem Barner and his son Shairik to their new home. The following Newport News Shipbuilding, Habitat for Humanity and community leaders were in attendence: Newport News Mayor McKinley Price; Ché Henderson, president, Habitat for Humanity
board of directors; Senator Mamie Locke, D-Hampton; Delegate Marcia “Cia” Price, D-Newport News; Delegate David Yancey, R-Newport News; Newport News City Councilwomen Tina Vick and Sharon Scott; Sandra Powell, director, Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority; Karen Joyner, CEO of the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank; Rob Hogan, vice president of Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management; Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations; and Arnold Outlaw, president of United Steelworkers Local 8888. CONTINUED ON PG 2
Shipbuilder Steering the Way Brenda Chapman (O46), was recently presented a level one Ethics On-the-Spot Award by Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, for her ethical behavior. Chapman recovered approximately two hundred dollars worth of new washers and other scrap material from the trash. Chapman’s questioning attitude and initiative reduced costs for the company and has allowed for the material to be readily available for utilization on the ship. To nominate a fellow employee for an On-the-Spot Ethics Award, visit the EEO, Ethics and Compliance website on Yardnet or contact Catrina Hagwood (O18) at 688-1907.

NNS Employees Attend AME LEAN Summit Newport News Shipbuilding employees attended the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) LEAN Summit in Atlanta, Georgia in May. During the event, participants were able to benchmark world-class organizations such as Chick-fil-A and Georgia Power. They also participated in sessions about leadership, engagement, and lean best practices. Kelly MacDonald (O51) said, “It was a great opportunity to learn how other companies develop business models and what their manufacturing best practices are around empowering employees to achieve better company results. The tours of the manufacturing companies demonstrated how innovation and employee engagement are utilized in implementing process improvements.” AME’s Southeast Region Director Kim Humphrey (O51) said, “I’m honored that my company was so well represented at this event and I was excited to see how these shared best practices will be used to innovate and benefit our organization as we share, learn and grow.” NNS is an AME corporate member and all employees are eligible for a member rate. The 2016 AME International Conference will be held October 24-28 in Dallas, Texas. To learn more, visit AME.org or contact Kim Humphrey (O51) at kim.humphrey@att.net or call 897-4456.
John Warner Lab Array Team Recognized Recently, USS John Warner (SSN 785) arrived at Newport News Shipbuilding for its Post Shakedown Availability (PSA). The PSA included preventive maintenance and contingency repairs in the Large Aperture Bow (LAB) Array that resides in the ship’s bow dome. X82 Construction Supervisor Jim Weber developed a plan to perform the LAB Array work while the ship was still waterborne, since Warner’s PSA is a non-docking availability. “The outside of the dome is mostly surrounded by water, which makes it difficult to control the environmental conditions inside the dome. That was very important to consider for the painting and adhesive work that was part of the required restoration of the LAB Array,” he said. “I worked closely with X31 General Foreman Don Richardson to coordinate the effort with his team of electricians, who provided quality work despite the fact that the ship was ballasted up significantly at the bow to enable this work to occur.” The entire execution team was made up of 12 departments including Engineering. All work was completed on May 8, ahead of schedule and under budget.

Hogan spoke on behalf of the shipyard and presented the keys and plaque to the Barner family. “One of the things that’s always impressed me with the company, is the caring spirit of the shipyard workers,” he said. “I can tell you that day in and day out, I witness shipyard workers caring for each other, our company, our navy customer and most of all our community.” Effrem said that he is very thankful for the shipyard and steelworkers. “I know you all had something else to do but instead you came here..after work, and I really appreciate that,” he said. 2016 marks the first time that shipyard volunteers have completed two houses for Habitat for Humanity in one year.

The audit team will review NNS processes, controls, procedures and records associated with the control of work and testing performed within the SUBSAFE, DSS-SOC and FBW boundaries. It requires each of us to exercise continuous vigilance, attention to detail, and a questioning attitude.” For more information about the audit or for questions, contact Sean Coons (O03) at 698-1595.

REMINDER: Do Not Forward Chain Emails
JUNE 9
In recent months, chain emails have been forwarded to employees that include false information and inaccurate security advisories. Although the emails were sent with good intentions, Newport News Shipbuilding would like to remind all employees not to forward chain emails at work regardless of how important the topic may seem, because the message(s) may or may not include false information.
JUNE 9-AUG. 25
For example, an email was recently distributed and then forwarded in the company that falsely claimed 30 employees were terminated for having Personal Camera Enabled Devices in a restricted area. This chain email led to unnecessary use of time and resources assigned to address false and inappropriate statements. Also, emails have been forwarded with inaccurate security “advisories” about our parking lots and gate areas causing unnecessary concern and alarm for employees.
The “Spear and Gear” Toastmasters’ Club will host a meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor conference room of The Apprentice School (Bldg. 812). For more information, contact Rose Brodie (K75) at 534-3382 or Donna Graves (X57) at 688-6204.
The Apprentice School Students Association has partnered with The Mariners’ Museum for “Thursday’s by the Lake” beginning June 9 - Aug. 25. To volunteer for this event, contact Nathan Carducci (X42) 355-1158.
JUNE 10
The 11th Annual Builder Backer Golf Classic will be held at Cypress Creek Golf Course June 10. Check-in will be at 10 a.m. and tee off at 11 a.m. Cost is $75 per golfer, dinner will be provided, and there will be raffle prizes. All proceeds directly benefit The Apprentice School sports teams. JUNE 20
NNS takes employee safety very seriously. Security, Human Resources, Labor Relations and Communications work closely together, and when warranted, official company communications will be distributed to all employees with accurate information. If an employee receives a chain email with information they feel needs to be shared with coworkers, they should first speak with their immediate supervisor or a representative from one of the organizations listed above to verify the information is accurate. For more information related to email use and rules of behavior, employees should reference SSP NO. IS-1012.
Check Out “Hot Shots” “Hot Shots” is a collection of photos taken each month at Newport News Shipbuilding by staff photographers. Check out the latest edition on the NNS website.
The Apprentice School Students Association will have Intramural Softball registration June 20 after work in the Student Commons Area of The Apprentice School (Bldg. 812) on the 2nd floor. To RSVP contact Amy Craven (X18) at (336)-324-4523.

Dear Shipbuilders, One of the most important civic duties we have as American citizens is the right to vote. Exercising this right is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted, which is why I would like to remind you about the upcoming primary elections in North Carolina on June 7 and Virginia on June 14. These primaries are to choose Republican and Democratic candidates who will run for various offices during the general election in November. Congressional districts in both states have been redrawn since the last election, so I urge you to check the following websites to see if you live in a district where an election will be held, as well as your current voting location and the candidates on your ballot:
Virginia: www.vpap.org/local-politics North Carolina: www.ncvoter.org/voting-in-nc/your-ballot
Polls in North Carolina will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on June 7. Polls in Virginia will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 14. I also want to remind you that voters in both states will be required to show a photo ID prior to casting their ballot. Participation in the political process affects our communities and nation today and in the future. No matter what candidate you decide to support, you have a right to let your voice be heard. If you live in a district with an impending primary, I encourage you to make every effort to get out and vote.
Sincerely,
Matt Mulherin President
