$3.35 Billion Contract Signed for Detail Design and Construction of John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) On June 5, Huntington Ingalls Industries received a $3.35 billion contract award for the detail design and construction of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second ship in the Gerald R. Ford class of carriers. The company also received a $941 million modification to an existing construction preparation contract to continue material procurement and manufacturing in support of the ship. Contract work includes ship construction, ship design activities, engineering services, procurement of materials and hardware to support construction and logistics activities. “These awards are important, not only for the shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding, but for the thousands of suppliers nationwide who provide the steel, pipe, cable, paint and equipment that goes into this cutting-edge defense platform—and for the sailors who will sail her,” said Mike Shawcross, Newport News Shipbuilding’s vice president, John F. Kennedy carrier construction. “We look forward to continuing to imple-
ment lessons learned from the first-of-the-class ship, Gerald R. Ford, in the construction of Kennedy and delivering the next great carrier to the Navy.” John F. Kennedy’s first steel was cut in December 2010. Since then, more than 450 of the ship’s 1,100 structural units have been constructed under a construction preparation contract that will be used to start erecting the ship’s hull. The ship’s keel-laying ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 22. John F. Kennedy will continue the legacy of highly capable U.S. Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carrier platforms. Ford-class enhancements incorporated into the design include flight deck changes, improved weapons handling systems and a redesigned island, all resulting in increased aircraft sortie-generation rates. The Ford class also features new nuclear power plants, increased electrical power-generation capacity, allowance for future technologies, and reduced workload for sailors, translating to a smaller crew size and reduced operating costs for the Navy.

NNS Adds New Warehouse as Cost-Saving Measure Newport News Shipbuilding will increase its indoor material storage capacity by more than 500,000 square feet with the addition of new warehouse space in the West Park Warehouse Complex in Hampton. “The new warehouse not only provides Newport News Shipbuilding with increased storage ca-
pacity, but provides us room to execute several changes to our procurement and logistics strategies in an effort to reduce overall cost, increase material availability and better support our programs across the shipyard,” said Brian Fields, NNS vice president, Supply Chain Management. Additional storage capacity facilitates Newport
News’ ability to buy parts and materials in bulk. It will also help the shipyard consolidate and centralize its logistics processes, which will reduce hand-offs and infrastructure cost while increasing material availability and program responsiveness. The shipyard will relocate 60-80 employees to the warehouse complex, which will support all shipyard programs.
NNS Showcases Shipyard STEM Careers The 4th annual Engineering Career Day was held May 28 at Christopher Newport University, Freeman Center. This year’s event, sponsored by CNU and NASA, was attended by an estimated 250 peninsula and south side students and chaperones. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) professionals from Newport News Shipbuilding, Jefferson Lab, and NASA were on hand to demonstrate specific types of engineering and science disciplines. Ron Murray, NNS vice president, Quality and Process Excellence, spoke to the students about his career path as a shipbuilder. Volunteers from each of the sponsoring companies also shared their career paths so students would have a better understanding of how to embark on similar careers. This event also showcased STEM careers through the hands-on demonstrations. Engineering Career Day is a partnership between the Peninsula Engineers Council, Newport News Shipbuilding, Jefferson Lab and NASA.

Trade Operations Vice President Ray Bagley kicks off a new Waterfront Leadership Engagement Team. Photo by Chris Oxley
Waterfront Leadership Team Focuses on New Strategies for Business Success In May, 60 shipbuilding leaders from every division and program gathered to brainstorm strategies and ideas to increase collaboration and engagement on the waterfront. The newly formed Waterfront Leadership Engagement Team (WLET) was kicked off by Ray Bagley, vice president of Trade Operations, Bill Bell, vice president, Human Resource & Administration and Ken Mahler, vice president, Navy Programs. Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Nuclear Propulsion division vice presidents were also on hand for the first-of-its-kind meeting. WLET represents the craft and hourly workforce on all levels of leadership.

ASSA Supports Dirty Girl 5K Apprentice School Student Association (ASSA) members volunteered and participated in the Dirty Girl 5K Mud Run in Virginia Beach May 17. After volunteering, ASSA delegates and council members cheered on the women participating in the obstacle course run. Although the event is focused on women, there were many men volunteers to support those running. The fun-mud event raises funds to support cancer survivors. Aleshia Jackson (X31), ASSA public relations chair, said, “We pride ourselves in volunteering and using these events to team build, support others and have a great time. It was an amazing experience and we look forward to doing it again next year.”
“We are on a journey to create the right environment for business success,” said Bagley. “I’m committed to a future where everyone working across this two-mile waterfront is excited about starting their day and accomplishing great things. We will design something new to remove the frustrations we see, hear, and feel that keep NNS people from
accomplishing their goals.” Through discussion and exercises, the team exposed challenges and opportunities that affect the success of the company and engagement of work teams. They then divided into smaller work groups. Virginia-Class Submarine Construction Superintendent Justin Byrum’s group is focusing on improving work package readiness at the mechanical level. Byrum said, “Our goal is to understand the gaps and propose actions to bridge those gaps. We strongly believe we are focusing on an area that has the opportunity to improve our deckplate engagement.” Trades Director Stewart Brenegar (O61) said he is hopeful for the future of WLET. “What was evident during this event was the emergence of new ideas that reflect the demographics of our next-generation workforce.” WLET teams will meet regularly to continue their efforts on building a more collaborative work environment.

Wellness Program Coordinators Gabrielle Willis and Emily McCarley visited SFA waterfront craftsmen outside Building 1745 during lunch on May 29. Using food models, employees were challenged to assemble a combination of items that they felt would constitute a healthy lunch. The interactive awareness session was designed to help employees make healthy choices in the future.
