NNS Hosts Second Annual Military Immersion Program On June 13, Talent Acquisition and Production and Maintenance Skills Training welcomed military career counselors to the shipyard for the second annual Military Immersion Program. The counselors, who are active duty service members of the U.S. Armed Forces, represented the Navy, Marines and Army. The program offers counselors invaluable shipyard knowledge and hands-on experience, so that they have a better understanding of the career opportunities that are available to military veterans. “It was an absolute honor and privilege to have the opportunity to once again host the Military Immersion Program,” said George Smith (O20), Talent Acquisition representative and military outreach specialist. “Newport News Shipbuilding strives to hire the best of the best, and many of those military veterans who are in the process of transitioning out of the service already have the desired skill set and work ethic to successfully transition seamlessly into our organization at a variety of levels.” During the four-day program, the counselors were able to participate in hands-on training with craftsmen and craftswomen, meet with senior leaders and divisions, take tours and learn about the career application process at NNS. Training Manager Jerry Eng (O26/E85) who coordinated the program said, “We are honored to host this event for the brave men and women who have given so much to safeguard our nation’s liberty and values. We could not imagine a better fit than aligning our veterans with a secondary career in shipbuilding.”

Career Pathways held year-end ceremonies for Girls with Engineering Minds in Shipbuilding (GEMS) at Booker T. Washington Middle School and Crittenden Middle School in June. The GEMS Program, which is now in its’ second year, introduces girls to careers in engineering through activities and mentoring. During this year’s ceremonies, nearly 50 students were recognized with certificates of achievement for completing the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program, and one girl from each school was recognized with a “Gem of GEMS” award for being the most active during the program. “The dedication of our Newport News Shipbuilding volunteers is what makes this program successful for the girls. The mentors express so much passion for their careers in STEM, which encourages the girls to learn more about engineering and shipbuilding,” said Stephanie White (O20), GEMS lead for Booker T. Washington Middle School. Career Pathways plans to continue GEMS into the next school year at Booker T. Washington Middle School and Crittenden Middle School. An informational meeting is scheduled for July 14 for employees that are in a STEM-related field and interested in becoming a mentor. For more information, contact Pierrette Swan (K18) at 688-2201.

NOTICE: Washington Avenue Bridge Replacement Will Affect Traffic The City of Newport News is scheduled to begin the Washington Avenue Bridge replacement July 11. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Washington Avenue between 42nd and 37th street will be affected through September 2017.

In-Service Aircraft Carrier Program Promotes the ISCVN Engagement Comment Line Recently, shipbuilders supporting USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) were greeted by senior leaders and In-Service Aircraft Carriers (ISCVN) Engagement Champions to promote the ISCVN Engagement Comment Line. The comment line was established to encourage ISCVN employees to provide feedback, suggestions and recognition ideas to the ISCVN Division. Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carriers, and Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, along with the ISCVN Engagement Champions, greeted shipbuilders and distributed lanyards that provided information about the comment line. ISCVN Engagement Champion Lead Bernadette Reid stated, “The comment line provides another platform that promotes inclusion and diversity and further engagement within the shipyard. We are dedicated to ensuring that our shipbuilders know that we are here to listen to their opinions and ideas.”

The four traffic lanes on the bridge will be reduced to one north-bound and one southbound lane and the walkway on Washington Avenue will be reduced to one side of the street during the construction period. Employees should expect potential gridlock during heavy traffic times while construction is underway. Additionally, vehicles and pedestrians will not be able to cross under the Washington Avenue Bridge through the railroad cut. Vehicles and pedestrians accessing the east yard will be routed through the 40th Street Gate. For questions regarding the bridge replacement project contact Omayra Orama (O41) at 374-0190.

Shipbuilders can call the ISCVN Engagement Comment Line at 380-7777 or email ISCVN@hii-nns.com. For more information about the comment line, contact Joe Osso (K69) at 380-2580.

July is Build Clean Awareness Month To raise awareness about the importance of building and maintaining clean piping systems and components throughout ship construction, Newport News Shipbuilding will recognize July as Build Clean month. The slogan for this year’s campaign is “Join the Team to Build Clean!” In order to raise awareness about the campaign, Build Clean articles, comic strips and a word jumble puzzle contest will be featured in upcoming issues of Currents. In addition, Message from The Clean Lantern handouts will be made available for crew talks focusing on Build Clean efforts across all programs. Build Clean messages will also be displayed on shipyard monitors and electronic marquee boards with applicable reminders for maintaining cleanliness. Although the focus of Build Clean is during the month of July, the process takes place 365 days a year. It is the responsibility of ALL shipbuilders, contractors, vendors, and suppliers to ensure NNS delivers a clean, safe, and operational product to our customer that will pass the test of time.

Listed below are the most recent winners of the On-the-Spot Ethics Recognition Program Award.

The Management Development Center (MDC) at Newport News Shipbuilding is now offering a series of after-hours professional development courses titled “Learning After the Whistle,” or L.A.W. School. The program is open to all salaried employees and is designed to provide opportunities for learning and growing both personally and professionally.

Congratulations to the following employees: Stanley Sabb (X33), Cameron Perry (X43), Rishard Robertson (K78), Ronald Bailey (X43) and James Riley (X43). Want to nominate a fellow employee? Contact Catrina Hagwood (O18) at 688-1907.

New Logo for All Things TIME Related Newport News Shipbuilding’s Time Improvement, Management, and Education (TIME) Team was established a few months ago to evaluate every aspect of timekeeping from requirements, policies and procedures to training, time-entry, approval and reporting in an effort to enhance timekeeping systems. As part of this ongoing effort, a new logo was designed to brand and help easily identify TIME and timekeeping initiatives.

For 2016, all classes are scheduled in the evening with plans to accommodate second and third shifts beginning in 2017. Course topics range from a singlesession, 2.5-hour course on the StrengthsFinder assessment, to a multiple-session, 8-hour course for Crucial Conversations. All required books and/or materials will be provided, so there is no cost for the employee to attend. Attendance is on the employee’s own time and no time charge will be provided. Register via the Learning Exchange (LX) and search for MDC LAW in the browse window. All courses will open for registration approximately one month prior to the start date. Seating is limited and registration will close when capacity is met. For questions about the program contact Vince Jordan (O25) at 380-4828 or Nancy Kramer (O25) at 688-2761.

Going forward, the logo will appear on the TIME “Did You Know?” series in Currents and other timekeeping initiatives communicated via a variety of approaches to educate, highlight, and reinforce NNS’ commitment to company-wide timely and accurate time recording.

NOTICE: New Aqua and Group Rider Parking Spaces Available Beginning Wednesday, July 6, nearly 50 aqua decal parking spaces will be available in the parking lot located at the rear of the HII Family Health Center. The new Aqua decal spaces are located on Huntington Avenue between 45th and 46th streets. Employees should be aware that all numbered parking spaces are reserved for the Family Health Center. Please observe and obey the parking lot signage. Employees not authorized to park in the health center’s numbered parking spaces will be towed. In response to feedback from employees, Newport News Shipbuilding has also designated eight parking spaces in the Group Rider lot between 43rd and 44th Streets (off of Washington Avenue) for 15-passenger vans. These spaces are on the front row of the lot and are appropriately marked for 15-passenger vans only.

Holiday Reminder: Independence Day Newport News Shipbuilding will be closed on Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. Due to the nature of shipyard operations, it will be necessary for some employees to report to work on the holiday. Supervisors will notify employees if they are required to work.
