NNS Raises Awareness on Piping Systems Cleanliness Throughout July, Newport News Shipbuilding will emphasize the importance of piping systems cleanliness through a variety of activities and programs. “Although every organization across the company may not physically touch pipes, all NNS employees have responsibility for ensuring we maintain system cleanliness throughout construction,” said Trades Director Leonard Harper. Building clean systems means that the interior of every pipe and component is cleaned before it is ever introduced into the production process. It also means systems and components are kept clean during every step of construction until final shipboard installation and final delivery to the Navy.

To raise awareness during July, there will be an OFI promotion focused on improving piping systems cleanliness, a “Take Five,” a series of Currents articles, a new Yardnet web page, a hard hat sticker, a Word Search Contest (see page 8) and yard-wide messages. Visit the Build Clean website on Yardnet to learn how work you do affects others’ ability to maintain system cleanliness throughout construction. NNS Supports Welding Education in Allendale County, S.C. Newport News Shipbuilding donated training materials to the Southern Carolina Regional Development Alliance (SCA) for a welding program in Allendale County, S.C. on June 26. The SCA’s Advanced Manufacturing Skills Training Program has already provided 47 students with welding training. The SCA is now working to expand the program by implementing curricula developed and used by NNS. In addition to the training materials presented to the SCA, a shipyard welding instructor will work with the training facility to implement the curricula. “Newport News Shipbuilding has found that by working closely and sharing some of our training materials with local community colleges and technical schools, we create a richer pipeline of talent applying for career opportunities with our company,” said Bill Docalovich, NNS director of Trades Services. Going beyond basic instruction, the curricula supplied by Newport News includes computer-based training followed by hands-on practice led by facility instructors. The instructors will have the opportunity to learn Newport News’ instructional style and use it with their students. With Newport News’ influence, the students will develop the skills necessary for welding in the manufacturing industry.

Installation and Testing of New NNS Emergency Notification System To help ensure the safety and well-being of all shipyard personnel, Newport News Shipbuilding is in the final phase of installing a new emergency audio notification system throughout the shipyard and outlying NNS buildings. The new Mass Area Communications (MAC) system will enhance the company’s ability to quickly alert shipyard personnel of emergency situations including power and telephone outages, extreme weather, and other situations that may require urgent notifications to be made. In an emergency, the MAC system allows messages to be broadcast from high-powered rooftop speakers and existing internal public address systems. Silent and low-volume testing of the system began on June 23 and will continue until the system is fully operational in late July. More details about the new system and testing will be coming.

NNS Welcomes 2014 Summer Interns This summer, Newport News Shipbuilding is hosting more than 130 interns in 80 departments around the shipyard. To welcome the summer interns, SHIPs Network invited the students to a luncheon at VASCIC on June 20. Becky Stewart, vice president of Manufacturing, was the guest speaker and gave a presentation on her career which began 32 years ago at NNS as a technical planner. Stewart urged the interns to learn as much as they can this summer and to consider all opportunities that come their way. NNS’ Summer Internship Program began in mid-May and will conclude at the end of August 2014. The program is designed to provide summer employment to college students and serve as an NNS pipeline program for the future.
