X15 Shipbuilders Recognized for Safety Initiatives X15 shipbuilders working in the Steel Fabrication Shop were recently recognized by leadership for their safety contributions and daily effort of keeping safety a top priority. “Together as a team, this crew has focused on making the shop a safer place for all shipbuilders,” said X15 second shift Production Foreman Dalton Smart. “Not only have they been accident-free for the past four years, but they have also brought forth various safety initiatives that have been implemented. They have improved the R.E.C. (recognize, evaluate and control) sheet for burning processes to ensure that proper machinery and gas shuts down at the end of shifts; they came up with a contraption, which consisted of a simple set Register now for the “Bridging the Generational Gap at NNS” Event Aug. 4. of steps to get onto the LO15 skids, a burning machine; they also created an additional walkway at the LO15 burning machine to help crane riggers load and offload material more efficiently and safely.” Smart added, “These are just a few of the improvements this crew has contributed. It’s an honor to work with them, and I’m looking forward to seeing the contributions they bring forth in the future.” Front row (L to R): Foreman Dalton Smart, Derrick Freeman, Natalie Terry, Eric Polante, Timothy Packard, Derek Redditt, Donald Waltz, Connie Young. AMSEC Employee Named VSRA Senior Tradesperson of the Year AMSEC’s Garrett Barber has been named Senior Tradesperson of the Year by the Virginia Ship Repair Association (VSRA). Barber, a senior master tradesperson mechanic in AMSEC’s elevator support unit division in Chesapeake, was recognized for his work aboard the aircraft carriers USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), USS Harry Truman (CVN 75) and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). Barber was one of 10 nominees from 245 member companies in the VSRA, a regional trade association representing companies supporting the ship repair industry in Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region. His expertise leading repairs to the ships’ aircraft elevators and hangar bay divisional doors reduced the work time required, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars. “This award recognizes the enormous talent and dedication that our ship repair tradesmen bring to the continued strength of the U.S. Navy,” said VSRA President Bill Crow. “Mr. Barber not only exemplifies the highest standard in his trade, but he serves as a mentor and volunteer to many young trades professionals in our community. It is the esteemed honor of VSRA to honor and recognize these gifted talents and their huge contributions to the ship repair industry.” Barber was also selected as a committee member tasked with reviewing shipboard maintenance requirements for new and technologically advanced deck machinery systems and equipment being installed onboard the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com for additional information.

The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Program teamed with Newport News Shipbuilding’s Marketing Department to host the Spring 2014 CVN 72 Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) Ship’s Force “Sailor of the Quarter” tour of NNS July 2. • Ship’s crew safety
The tour and panel discussion were a chance for CVN 72 sailors to ask questions of shipyard tour guides, vice presidents, directors, and program managers, and to understand workloads and impacts that other projects throughout the yard may have on the RCOH.

Summer Interns Set to Complete Night School Operations Course This year, 46 summer interns voluntarily enrolled themselves in a condensed version of Night School’s Shipyard Operations, with the final class to be completed on July 29. “You need to be able to appreciate the work that comes before and after your part,” said Victoria Dixon, business marketing student at Christopher Newport University, interning with The Apprentice School (O22). “If you know the bigger picture, you know how to better prepare for the next person to be successful.” The Foundry, Modular Outfitting Facility (MOF), Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) were some of the locations explored by the classes. “I was stationed on submarines, so getting to see the MOF was a major highlight for me,” said Randolph Snook, former Navy sailor and now

a mechanical engineering student at Virginia Commonwealth University, interning in Overhaul and Primary Systems (E81). Not only did the interns dedicate their personal time to participate, but so have instructors Mike Burkett (X88) and Lynn Showalter (O37). “Lynn and I have worked for over 30 years to build great ships and shipbuilders,” said Burkett. “We have found that one of the best ways to support this effort is to share our knowledge and experiences with emerging leaders; to make our company a better place for them and for those to come.”
Logistics’ Safety Task Team Holds “Partners in Safety” Forum More than 500 employees attended a “Partners in Safety” Forum facilitated by the Logistics Department’s (O53/O54) Safety Task Team July 15-22. The goal of the forum was for attendees to hold discussions about safety initiatives that are working well for teams and to share new ideas about how to keep shipbuilders focused on safety. “The forum was held over six days and divided up into sessions with approximately 35 people each session,” said Bob Pye, safety task team lead. “A portion of the forum was devoted to watching ‘Remember Charlie,’ a video about a man who was burned in an accident at work. After the accident, he realizes that it was his responsibility to look after himself and others. We divided the video into four segments so we could hold discussions after each concerning our responsibility to keep ourselves safe.” Horace Atkins (O53) attended the forum. “Overall, I thought the forum was very informative,” he said. “I enjoyed the video and discussions it generated. It reminded us that taking shortcuts in a procedure and being complacent with proper PPE (personal protective equipment) can have devastating effects on all our lives; not only here at the yard, but in our personal lives as well.” Rodney Thornton Jr. (O53) was one of the forum’s facilitators. “I hope the discussions during the forum were very enlightening and that the attendees will share what they learned with other shipbuilders,” he said. “I also hope that all the attendees left the forum understanding that their life depends on how safe they work – at the shipyard and at home.” Rodney Thornton Jr. (O53) leads a discussion about the company’s view on safety during the Logistics Department’s “Partners in Safety” Forum July 15-22.
