NNS Participates in YMCA STEM Fair On Thursday, July 21, volunteers from Career Pathways represented Newport News Shipbuilding at the 2016 Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA STEM Fair at the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, Virginia. During the event, approximatively 1,600 campers from 17 different YMCA branches participated in hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities. Volunteers from Career Pathways offered students live demonstrations of
modeling and simulation programs, as well as augmented reality. After attending the event, VCS Program Director Matt Needy said, “It was amazing to watch how all the kids responded to the NNS team and our state-of-the-art technology demonstrations.” “From the reactions and great questions we recieved from the kids, I am sure we will see many of those same faces wearing NNS hard hats and steel toes in the not too distant future,” said Needy.
EH&S Task Teams Sponsor Expo More than 35 Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Task Teams sponsored and participated in this year’s EH&S Task Team Expo on July 26 and 27. The expo was held in Bldg. 4931, a central location within the shipyard gates to improve travel for shipbuilders attending the event. EH&S Task Team Expo lead Kati Allison (O27) said, “Starting with the first EH&S Task Team Expo, our goal has been to allow for more employees to attend, so that they can see new tooling initiatives, innovative improvements and other EH&S Programs the teams have developed. The new location and extra day allowed 1,000 additional employees to attend.” CONTINUED ON PG 2

EH&S Task Teams Sponsor Expo CONTINUED FROM PG 1
Tyler Quarterman (X36) attended the expo with a craftsman guest pass. “Information about safety does not do us much good unless its circulated and understood. This was a great opportunity for us to be exposed to a wealth of new information, and it was a breakthrough event that should be continued in future expos,” he said. Adrian Brown (M53), who is co-lead for the M53 EH&S Task Team, described his team’s booth. “The M53 booth focused on visual safety improvements for employees to easily identify possible hazards within their area. We featured our fire extinguisher flags and labels that are placed on beams to indicate location, our portable exhaust ventilation that welders use to improve air quality, and our bright yellow safety painted transfer tracks that employees depend on to easily recognize tripping hazards throughout the shop.” Director of EH&S Dru Branche said, “This year’s event was very successful because over 1,500 shipbuilders from all over the shipyard were able to come together with similar issues and collaborate on various solutions. The expo is an excellent time for EH&S Task Teams and other craftsmen and craftswomen to get creative, and discover resourceful and innovative ideas for EH&S improvements.”

IPPC Peer Lead Team Increases Engagement The Integrated Planning and Production Control Division continues to realize success through a Gallup-themed initiative called “What Can We All Do – Round II.” The initiative is a joint effort that started with employees from the New Carrier Construction Engineering department (E07), Production Planning and Control department (X89) and Production Control Department (X76). The group began working together last year to develop an approach to increase engagement by establishing peer led teams. As peer leads, employees volunteer in their areas to uncover opportunities for improvement and promote open communication in an effort to drive change and inspire fellow employees to foster an engaged workforce. Peer leads throughout the division continue to see positive impacts from this effort. “Our hope is that as this initiative continues, employees will realize their value to the company, which will promote a renewed trust in the process of engagement and will translate into greater company loyalty and commitment to quality,” said Mitchell Durant, production planner and scheduler for E07. From leadership’s perspective, the initiative is about leveling the playing field and providing an

outlet for everyone to be heard. “My belief has always been that improving engagement requires input from everyone, not just supervision or management,” said Rob Winslow, manager of production planning and scheduling. “I think that this initiative has helped employees get involved, allowed their voices to be heard and has helped them understand that we all have skin in the game.” For more information or questions about the peer lead initiative, contact Dar Deerfield Mook (E07) at 380-4502 or Tanesha Lockett at 534-2792.

ModSim Holds Two-Day Hackathon In June, a software development and analytics group from department K76/E04 held a two-day hackathon as a part of the group’s effort to leverage the Lean Startup method. The Lean Startup method is a scientific approach to new product development. The approach offers a set of tools that businesses can use to test a new product vision continuously throughout the product development lifecycle. During the hackathon, several participants worked together to solve a given problem using the group’s simulation software. The exercise acted as an experiment to test a set of hypotheses that the software development team created prior to the event in order to better understand user needs.

“As a Christian, I find it’s getting harder and harder to live out my values and not be seen as hateful. Sometimes I feel people assume that because of my faith I don’t respect them or value diversity. This couldn’t be more wrong. The Christian message is one of love and is for all people regardless of our differences.” Mike Ship

Emergency Response Organization (ERO) Holds First Awareness Week The Emergency Response Organization (ERO) is holding its first ERO Awareness Week, August 15 – 19, to help Newport News Shipbuilding employees understand the role it plays in ensuring NNS maintains the highest safety and control standards governed by the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. As the only shipbuilder in the U.S. who can build nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and one of two shipyards in the country building nuclear submarines, an effective ERO is critical for NNS to maintain its license to perform nuclear work for the Navy. “Our success as a company and the safety of our employees are tied to adhering to the highest controls and standards in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program,” said Radiation Safety Analyst Len Rossi. The ERO proactively supports the shipyard’s radiological control program and maintains the NNS Radiological Emergency Response Plan to ensure there is a coordinated response by various shipyard departments, the Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Naval Reactors Representatives Office and Navy personnel. ERO conducts regular training and drill exercises to ensure the high performance and proficiency of all emergency responders.
“Although a significant accident involving one of our nuclear ships is highly unlikely, we must be diligent in our training and preparations to respond to any event,” said Rossi. “Our objective is to minimize the potential impact from such an event to our people, the shipyard and our community.” At Newport News Shipbuilding, there are more than 600 employees who are members of the ERO support team. While ERO provides leadership and expertise to facilitate the proper response to a potential situation, they don’t act alone. Every shipbuilder should be prepared and know what to do when an emergency or simulated exercise occurs. “For every emergency situation, whether it involves radiological material or not, call *911 or 380-2222 to report it,” said Radiological Controls Instructor Bill Neff. “And just as you would offer assistance in a real emergency, you should actively participate in a drill exercise if you are in the area when it occurs, or if you are asked to assist by an emergency responder. You should also follow all instructions and listen for emergency broadcasts. In other words, do the right thing.” Pictured Above: The ERO conducts training in the Newport News Shipbuilding Emergency Command Center. Photo by John Whalen
ERO Awareness Week Events During ERO Awareness Week, ERO personnel will be at several locations around the shipyard with their emergency mobile unit to answer questions and discuss with employees the company’s commitment to ensuring NNS has the safest and most efficient Naval Nuclear Propulsion controls program. Waterfront employees will also participate in a Take 5 with their foremen to review the ERO recommended procedures for safely responding to an emergency. “We will be in the yard and at the gates with our On-Scene Command Post Vehicle,” said Neff. The vehicle is designed with specialized equipment and resources to support any emergency response. By having a rare look at our emergency vehicle and our resources it should help employees better understand the shipyard’s commitment to emergency response and the responsibilities of each and every shipbuilder during an actual event or exercise.” See the ERO Awareness flier on the next page to view the dates and times of when the On-Scene Command Post Vehicle will be at a location near you.
