AMSEC Wins Two Navy Contracts 8 | 18 | 2014
A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
Last week, AMSEC was awarded two contracts in support of the U.S. Navy. Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., awarded a contract to AMSEC for technical and logistical support services, as well as material kitting services, for U.S. Navy LCC 19-class Amphibious Command ships. Material kitting services involve the pre-packaging of materials required to complete a specific task. Amphibious Command ships provide command and control for fleet commanders. A total of three indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contracts were awarded for these services with a combined maximum dollar amount of $96.8 million. AMSEC was also awarded the initial delivery order valued at $1.2 million. “AMSEC continues to respond to our customer’s needs and enhance our services to meet the Navy’s requirements,” said Harris Leonard, NNS vice president and president of AMSEC Operations. “We will build on our record of superior service to the Naval Sea Systems Command and the naval fleet they support.”
NNS to Celebrate Ethics and Compliance Awareness Week Newport News Shipbuilding will celebrate Ethics and Compliance Awareness Week, August 18-22. The purpose of the week is to refocus employees on company values, communicate ethical standards and to keep the ethics message fresh in employee’s minds. The theme for the week is “Shaping the Culture.” Various employee activities are scheduled to take place during the week to highlight shipbuilder’s commitments to high standards for ethics. The Business Conduct Committee will host events such as presentations, Lunch-n-Learns, gift give-aways, and other activities. Complete an Ethics and Compliance Awareness Week Word Search on page 8. Evelyn Gregory, Ethics and Business Conduct manager, said, “As a team, we continue to seek opportunities to communicate and provide
awareness to our employees that will promote and encourage ethical conduct.” Carrie Long, Compliance administrator, added, “Regulations, policies and procedures govern every aspect of our business and our compliance with them ensures we perform with integrity and at our best.”
AMSEC will support modernization requirements for USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) and USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20). AMSEC will also provide advanced planning efforts associated with shipchecks, drawings and engineering, as well as marine maintenance and installation. The work is anticipated to be performed in Virginia Beach, Va., Yokosuka, Japan, Puget Sound, Wash., and Gaeta, Italy. The work is expected to be completed by July 2019.

Area Teachers Come to NNS for Two-Week Internship For the third consecutive year, Newport News Shipbuilding offered two sessions of two-week paid internships to a limited number of middle and high school STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) teachers and guidance counselors from Hampton Roads area public schools. The two sessions were held July 7-18 and July 28-August 8. During the internship, teachers learned about trades and engineering at NNS through hands-on activities, guest speakers and tours through various shipyard shops. NNS President Matt Mulherin spoke to both groups and provided an overview of how teachers can provide a link between STEM education and positions available at NNS. Jeffrica Key, O26 Product Training manager, managed the group for each of the two weeks. Coordination between engineering,

talent acquisition and Career Pathways ensured the teachers left with the knowledge that NNS is a great place for their students to work and receive a rewarding career. Some of the teachers were interviewed by the Virginian Pilot for an article on the difficulty of finding the right talent for open positions. EH&S Hosts 2014 Safety Expo More than 1,500 shipbuilders attended the EH&S Expo hosted by Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Friday, Aug. 8 in Bldg. 520-6. At the expo, EH&S task team members showcased their recent process and equipment innovations designed to reduce risk and the potential for injury. Anita McCray (O19) looks forward to the expo each year. “The Safety Expo is great because it gives shipbuilders an opportunity to see all the different safety initiatives going on in the company,” she said. “It also gives shipbuilders a chance to see tools and equipment available to them.” Terry Gray (K69), Pipe Shop Safety Task Team lead, volunteered at “The Safety Man Movement” booth. “Everyone is responsible for their own safety, so our booth was geared towards changing the idea of ‘The Safety Man’ from being one person to many,” he said. “We hoped to engage and empower the visitors that stopped by our booth to knowing that they can make a difference in safety here at NNS.”

One of the most popular booths at the expo was the Tool Room’s pink, shipyard-approved hard hats available for purchase. Marti Kuhns (O20) said, “I purchased a pink hard hat because I am a cancer survivor and I am certain that monies donated to the American Cancer Society are the reason I am here today and able to call myself a shipbuilder. I also think this is a brilliant engagement function. It encompasses the entire shipyard, no matter where you work or what title you have. I’ve decided to wear mine all day today no matter where I am, so when people ask me about it, I can share the great news about working at Newport News Shipbuilding.”
Newport News Shipbuilding will christen the submarine John Warner (SSN 785) during a ceremony at the shipyard on Saturday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m. Visit www.warnerchristening.com for event information. Employees can request up to two tickets to the event for themselves, family or a friend. Shipbuilders can begin requesting tickets Aug. 18 and ticket distribution will begin on Aug. 21. To request tickets, shipbuilders should contact their division POC (view list on Yardnet or at shipyard gates). Volunteers are still needed for the event. Shipbuilders interested in volunteering, should send an email to Communications@hii-nns.com with their Pictured: Capt. Select NNS Employees to be Sent Mid-Year Performance Management Survey A 2014 Mid-Year Performance Management Survey will be sent to selected Newport News Shipbuilding employees via email on August 18. NNS encourages everyone who receives the survey to take time to complete it upon receipt.
HRT Wants to Hear From You! As a part of the commitment to improve traffic and parking conditions for shipbuilders, Newport News Shipbuilding has extended its partnership with Hampton Roads Transit (HRT). In July, NNS purchased and distributed 1,250 “GoPass365” passes for use throughout the HRT network. The network includes the bus system as well as the Tide Light Rail, Elizabeth River Ferry and the TRAFFIX Van Pools. “As a result of this program, a number of NNS employees will enjoy reduced transportation costs and a better commuting experiences,” said Bob Fallon, director of Facilities and Waterfront Support. “NNS will continue to look for additional solutions.” Fallon added, “HRT is also committed to improving their service to NNS employees and the Hampton Roads community as a whole and have asked that we make our shipbuilders aware of a survey site to support these efforts. HRT is collecting survey information that will be used in their strategic plan to obtain state and federal funding for the expansion of public transportation in the Hampton Roads area.” What if transit services were better for everyone? What if local bus service were reliable enough that you did not have to worry about the bus making its assigned schedule? Now is your opportunity to give HRT your opinion. The HRT survey (www.connecthamptonroads.com) takes about five minutes to complete and can be done during non-work periods or from home. When the survey is complete, HRT will report its findings to the community and then will develop a detailed plan to build the type of system people want to see with realistic funding alternatives. HRT will then present that plan to legislative leaders in Richmond for consideration.

40th Anniversary of “Big Blue’s” Arrival to NNS On August 15, 1974, the components of the large gantry crane known as “Big Blue” arrived by barge at Newport News Shipbuilding. The crane took about nine months to build and went into service in the early summer of 1975 with an original capacity of 900 metric tons. The crane was part of a massive expansion by
NNS to build a new North Yard dry dock and construction facility for commercial ship construction. The facility was constructed large enough to construct ultra large crude old carriers (ULCC) ships of over 1100 feet in length. Two of the large ships are built in 1978 and 1979 but the market for the ships closed.
Aircraft carrier construction moved to the facility beginning with the Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) in October 1981. The crane went through a major 16-month overhaul in 2007-08 with an increase in capacity to 1050 metric-tons. Pictured: NNS photo archives (on left) and photo on right by Chris Oxley
NOTICE: Gas Pipeline Project Will Affect Parking Newport News Shipbuilding is replacing the shipyard’s three Powerhouse boilers with new, efficient natural gas boilers. As part of this project, the shipyard is working with Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) to install a new gas line to feed the new boilers. The new gas line will run from east of the CSX railroad tracks, down 39th Street, and into the shipyard. Beginning August 20, some parking spaces in the lot between Warwick Blvd. and Huntington Ave. on 39th St. will not be available. As early as
August 27, some spaces in the Oxygen Plant (B518) parking lot at the corner of Washington and 39th will also not be available. Plant Engineering (Dept. O41) is assisting VNG to minimize impacts to parking during the installation. Workers are expected to complete installing the gas line in early October. In the coming weeks, more information about construction in the affected parking lots and parking alternatives will be provided. If you have any questions or concerns, call Ken Allmon (O41) at 688-8793.
