NNS Awarded $52 Million Contract for Truman Last week, Newport News Shipbuilding announced that it received a $52 million contract from the U.S. Navy for nuclear propulsion and complex modernization work on the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as part of its planned incremental availability. The contract covers planning, material procurement, prefabrication, manpower, support services, design integration, engineering and management support and technical data. Work will be performed at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and is expected to be completed by Sept. 2017. “We are proud to do the maintenance and modernization work that is vital to the Navy’s ability to carry out its mission,” said Chris Miner, vice president, In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs. “Our shipbuilders look forward to completing this important work in support of redelivering a first-rate ship that is ready to continue projecting our Navy’s strength at sea.” Named for the 33rd president of the United States, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) is the eighth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. The ship was launched in September 1996 by Newport News and is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk.
2016 United Way Campaign Slogan Contest Ends Aug. 31 This year, Newport News Shipbuilding wants to kick off the 2016 United Way Campaign with an exciting and engaging slogan created by a NNS employee. The winning slogan must not exceed six words and will be featured on all campaign materials and posters distributed around the yard. Employees can submit slogans to unitedway2015@hii-nns.com through Aug. 31. The winner will be invited to the Annual United Way Kickoff Breakfast held in October and will be recognized by NNS. For questions, send an email to unitedway2015@hii-nns.com.
Teamwork Saves a Life at NNI On Thursday, July 7, Newport News Industrial (NNI) Welder Kevin Sedgwick (N960) started his day like any other day. He listened to his supervisor’s Take 5 discussion, received his assignments and headed to the computer room to verify his weld records. The last thing he remembers is opening the door to the computer room. At approximately 6:00 a.m., a co-worker heard a loud bang and found Sedgwick on the floor, unconscious. NNI employees Clinton Combs (N960) and Dan Clark (N960), and Riley Power Group employees Edward Adamson and Wardell Richardson rushed to his side. “When we got to him, he had no pulse and wasn’t breathing,” Combs said. In a matter of seconds, Adamson and Combs began administering CPR on Sedgwick, while Clark rushed to a nearby CPR station to... CONTINUED ON PG 2

...retrieve an AED device. Richardson knew how to use the device and quickly handed the AED pads to Combs who placed them on Sedgwick. Within seconds of the AED shock, Sedgwick briefly regained consciousness, started breathing and then passed out again. Adamson and Combs continued CPR on Sedgwick until the ambulance arrived and emergency medical technicians were able to stabilize him. “Seeing Kevin’s eyes open was an awesome thing,” said Adamson. “I held his hand and kept calling his name to let him know he would be alright,” said Combs. “I didn’t come to work thinking I was going to do CPR, but it was a great feeling to know what to do in that moment.” Both Adamson and Combs learned CPR many years ago as volunteer firemen. “Everybody should know CPR,” said Combs. Adamson added, “CPR saves lives.” Sedgwick, who is now cleared by doctors and back to work, is still surprised he had a heart attack that day. He eats well and goes to the gym with his wife regularly. Despite his healthy lifestyle, Sedgwick was told by the doctors that his heart attack was due to an artery being almost completely clogged. According to the American Heart Association, most people who experience cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location die because they don’t receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene. Throughout the year, The American Heart Association mobile CPR training bus travels across the country to provide people in communities with hands-on CPR training. On Sept. 23, the mobile CPR training bus is scheduled to be in front of Bldg. 520 at Newport News Shipbuilding from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Employees interested in learning more about this event can view the flier on Yardnet or visit www.heart.org/handsonlycpr.
The Asian Shipbuilders Including All Nationalities (ASIAN) employee resource group (ERG) held its kickoff at VASCIC Thursday, July 14. Nearly 60 people attended the first kickoff where Executive Sponsor, Vice President and Chief Information Officer Bharat Amin spoke to the group and shared personal stories about his family and culture. “I had a great time sharing about my Indian heritage and upbringing as well as sharing many fun-filled facts about India and its culture,” he said. ASIAN’s vision is to create a forum where Asian American shipbuilders can come together to network and share their culture and experiences with fellow employees. It’s an opportunity to get engaged, learn something new and build relationships with other employees. If interested in joining the ASIAN ERG, send an email to ASIAN_ERG@hii-nns.com or contact Brittany Pollock (020) at 380-4792.

He provides handouts on different health and wellness related topics and encourages his co-workers to engage in discussions, so that they can learn together.
