John Warner Christened With her husband at one side and a massive submarine bow on the other, Jeanne Warner christened John Warner (SSN 785), the 12th Virginia-class submarine and the only one in the class to be named after a person. The christening took place Saturday during an evening ceremony that ended with fireworks and a laser light show. As the ship’s sponsor, Jeanne Warner performed the traditional honor of smashing a bottle of American sparkling wine across the submarine’s bow before an audience of about 7,000 people. Throughout construction, the Warners watched the submarine come together from the initial keel-laying to the christening. “Each time I see her,” Jeanne Warner said, “I am overwhelmed with pride and emotion and admiration because I know that the USS John Warner will, like her namesake, do what is best for America – protect us and our freedom for many years to come.” Rarely is a ship or submarine named after a living person. John Warner, former U.S. Senator for Virginia and Secretary of the Navy, began his career as a Navy enlisted sailor during the final years of World War II. He went on to become a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War before returning to Virginia to earn his law degree and begin his political career. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

In fact, according to the American Heart Association someone dies from CVD every 39 seconds. Heart disease also kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. And congenital cardiovascular defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects. It is estimated that 80 percent of cardiovascular disease is preventable! Introducing his wife as the sponsor, John Warner underscored the importance the submarine marks for the entire nation. “We are here tonight to not just honor Jeanne and John Warner,” he said. “We’re honoring America – America’s strength, America’s commitment toward peace and stability in the world. That’s what this magnificent vessel hopefully will do for its entire 35 years.” During his keynote address, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that SSN 785 will be homeported in Norfolk. “The vessel that we christen today is the most advanced ship in the world, its technology unmatched,” he said. “American technological innovation and manufacturing skill have always been some of our most powerful advantages. They are represented in the John Warner by the more than 1,000 ship workers who have worked
directly on her here and by thousands and thousands more across this country.” NNS President Matt Mulherin celebrated the many Virginia shipbuilders who worked together to make the event possible. “Tonight I am extremely honored to be here representing 23,500 shipbuilders of Newport News,” he said. “Shipbuilders who work with integrity, shipbuilders who understand the importance of quality, shipbuilders who sign their name to each weld, each piece of pipe and each and every inch of steel. And shipbuilders who can proudly say this submarine was made in America.” SSN 785 is on schedule to be delivered to the U.S. Navy in 2015. Moving Warner to Dry Dock On September 1, shipbuilders spent more than eight hours moving John Warner (SSN 785) to the shipyard’s floating dry dock. View a time-lapse video of Warner moving to the floating dry dock on Yardnet or at nns.huntingtoningalls.com/videos. “It takes hard work, commitment and attention to detail by hundreds of shipbuilders across the entire company to transform the shipyard into an event site,” said Jennifer Dunn, director of Communications. “From the smallest of details, like the ceremony signage, to the biggest and most visible, like a fireworks show, the christening team is doing an outstanding job to create a unique and memorable experience for our shipbuilders and their families, for our Navy customer, and for Senator Warner, his wife Jeanne, and their friends and family.” Shipbuilders spent more than eight hours on Labor Day moving the 7,800-ton submarine from the Modulear Outfitting Facility to the shipyard’s floating dry dock. Photo by John Whalen
“I was proud to be able to be part of the building of the submarine John Warner. My family really enjoyed the band and the light show following the christening.” Agustin Melendez (X18) “I attended the christening with my daughter, niece and nephew. They were all impressed to see how big the submarine was and how close we were able to get to it during the floating dry dock tour. They also enjoyed getting their face painted and eating the ice cream!” Gregory Martin (X10) “I enjoyed the event because seeing the submarine gave me more of a meaning to my job as a welder.” Fabian Sanchez (X18)

Shipbuilders Continue to Keep “Safety First” A crew of welders (X18) working in the Covered Modular Outfitting Facility (CMOF) were recently recognized by leadership for their continuous effort of keeping safety a top priority. “We are a young crew with a great track record,” said Rodderick Smith (X18). “Our foreman strongly encourages us to abide by safe work practices, which is one of the main reasons I believe we have been able to remain safe for the past two years. Other things our crew does to ensure the safety of each other and others around us is to contribute and stay engaged in safety discussions, remain aware of our surroundings and changing conditions, and avoid taking unnecessary risks.”

NNS Hosts U.S. Reps for Shipyard Tour On September 5, Newport News Shipbuilding hosted U.S. Reps. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas; Bobby Scott, D-Va.; Randy Forbes, R-Va.; Rob Wittman, R-Va.; and Scott Rigell, R-Va., for a tour of the shipyard. The tour gave the Virginia statesmen the opportunity to introduce Thornberry to their shipbuilding constituents and get a behind-the-scenes look at the defense industrial base. Accompanied by NNS President Matt Mulherin, the congressmen got an in-depth look at aircraft carrier and submarine construction, including a tour of nuclearpowered aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and a look at ROVR (rapid operational virtual reality), a tool used to increase construction efficiencies. The tour also included a pierside briefing on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) to discuss the ship’s refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) as well as a brief tour of the supplemental modular outfitting facility (SMOF), a new building used to support the two-per-year construction of Virginia-class submarines. “It is invaluable for somebody like me to come and get a better feel for what it takes to build these enormously sophisticated, enormously capable ships that are so central to our

country’s security,” Thornberry said. “Naval ships equal U.S. presence around the world. There is currently some question about our leadership in the world—our presence around the world. I think part of the answer is we have to put more ships in the water.” As vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Thornberry helps allocate and oversee funding for the Department of Defense, the Armed Forces and portions of the Department of Energy. On September 4, Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that it has awarded a contract to QuadMed, a national leader in employer-sponsored onsite healthcare. QuadMed will manage and operate HII’s family healthcare centers for the company’s Ingalls Shipbuilding and Newport News Shipbuilding division employees and their families. “We are excited that QuadMed will make convenient, high-quality healthcare even more accessible to our employees and their dependents,” said Bill Ermatinger, HII corporate vice president and chief human resources officer. “QuadMed’s commitment to strong patient-provider relationships and patient confidentiality is evident by their 98 percent patient satisfaction rate. It is our hope that the availability of these healthcare centers will contribute to a robust and enhanced culture of health and wellness among our employees and their families.” HII’s health centers are part of a new benefits strategy designed to optimize employee health and wellness options.
