NNS Continues to Make Strides on Aircraft Carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) Recently, Newport News Shipbuilding placed a 900-ton superlift into the dry dock, continuing construction of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). As Kennedy begins to take shape in the dry dock, the ship’s cost and construction schedule continue on track with significant improvement over its predecessor, the first-of-class, Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). “We continue to focus on reducing costs, and we are pleased with our progress,” said Mike Shawcross, vice president, CVN 79 Carrier Construction. “The incorporation of lessons learned from CVN 78 on to CVN 79— and major build strategy changes to construct the ship a different way—are having a significant impact on our construction efficiencies, just as we anticipated they would.” Veronica Pretlow (O95) shows a demo of the new time and attendance system called MyTime. Photo by Chris Oxley
MyTime Now Live MyTime, the new time and attendance system, is now available for salaried employees to use for daily time entry. To access MyTime, employees should look for the MyTime icon on their computer’s desktop screen or type https://mytime in their web browser. For additional support, employees are encouraged to call MyTime Central, a dedicated help desk that is available Monday – Friday during all three shifts. Dial 688-5555 or the toll-free number at 844-849-TIME. Frequently asked questions are available on the Timekeeping Central website on MyNNS. Watch a video on Yardnet to hear from employees who took part in an early pilot program for MyTime.
Like Ford, Kennedy is being built using modular construction, a process where smaller sections of the ship are welded together to form larger structural units (called “superlifts”). Equipment is then installed, and the large superlifts are lifted into the dry dock using the company’s 1,050-metric ton gantry crane. Kennedy is on track to be completed with 445 lifts, which is 51 fewer than Ford and 149 less than USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the last Nimitz-class carrier. “Fewer lifts to the dock means we’re building larger superlifts with more outfitting installed prior to erecting the sections in dock,” said Mike Butler, Kennedy... Needy to Lead Virginia-Class Submarine Program and Fleet Services Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin sent a letter to employees on Sept. 14 regarding organizational changes to the Submarine and Fleet Support Division. In the letter, Mulherin announced that after more than 35 years of dedicated service, Jim Hughes, who serves as the current vice president of the division, announced his intention to retire on Sept. 30. Mulherin also announced that Matt Needy has been promoted to vice president of the Virginia-Class Submarine Program and Fleet Services and will report to Ken Mahler, vice president of Navy Programs. In addition, the letter stated, that as work continues to increase on the Ohio-Class Replacement (ORP) Submarine Program, the ORP program will become a standalone division under the Navy Programs division and will continue to be led by David Bolcar, program director of the ORP Program. Bolcar will report directly to Ken Mahler. Read the full letter on Yardnet.

...construction program director. “This translates to man-hour savings because the work is being accomplished off the ship in a more efficient work environment.” Close to 90 lifts have been placed in the dock and joined together since the ship’s keel was laid in August 2015. Kennedy is scheduled to be launched in 2020 and delivered to the Navy in 2022, when it will replace USS Nimitz (CVN 68). See a video of the lift on the HII website.
Newport News Shipbuilding’s Management Development Center continues to offer a series of after-work professional development courses for employees. The “Learning After the Whistle,” or L.A.W. School Program offers employees an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Currently, salaried employees are eligible to enroll this year with potential hourly enrollment in the future. All courses for the remainder of 2016 are now open for registration. View the full list of courses on Yardnet. To register, visit the Learning Exchange (LX) and perform an advanced search for “LAW.” Courses open for registration approximately one month prior to the start date. Seating is limited and registration will close when capacity is met. All MDC courses are offered in the evenings in Bldg. 903 on the 7th floor. Required books and materials are also provided, so there is no cost to the employee to attend. As a reminder, attendance is on the employee’s own time and no time charge will be provided. For questions about this program, contact Michelle Avery (O25) at 380-3068 or Nancy Kramer (O25) at 688-2761.

School Tools Drive Success This year, Newport News Shipbuilding’s annual “School Tools” drive collected more than 20,000 school supplies to assist approximately 1,100 area students. Shipbuilders donated a variety of school supplies, including 7,110 pencils, 3,207 ball point pens and 316 backpacks. In conjunction with United Way’s Day of Caring on Sept. 9, the supplies were sorted and delivered to Newport News/Hampton/York-Poquoson Departments of Social Services, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, and ForKids, Inc. “This year’s School Tools drive was a tremendous success,” said Tom Cosgrove, manager, Corporate Citizenship and Government Relations. “Thanks to the generosity of our shipbuilders and the hard work of our volunteers, over 1,000 students are able to start the school year positioned for success. All the agencies involved and the students and families who benefited are most grateful for our efforts.”

The policy states that each NNS employee is responsible for his or her company badge. In accordance with the policy, all badges must be removed from plain sight when employees leave NNS property and badges are NEVER to be photographed or photocopied for any purpose. If employment verification is required to qualify for an employee discount, employees can present their badge to a vendor, but the badge must never be photographed, photocopied or taken from the possession of the employee at any time. The NNS X Job Order Database is a tool that provides detailed information on existing and approved overhead job order numbers. A link to this database is available through the Timekeeping Central website on Yardnet.

The Virginia Jaycees is a nonprofit community organization dedicated to leadership training and personal development for young adults. During the event, approximately 15 Jaycees volunteered as referees, commentators and scorekeepers for the six teams competing. Apprentice graduates RaDonta Murphy (X31), Terrence Patrick (O26), Maze Toomer (X36) and Andre Walters (X11) were part of the winning team named “The Squad.” “The key to winning the tournament was chemistry,” said Murphy. “When you work together, you can achieve great things.” The Apprentice Jaycees plan to host the next tournament in 2017.
“Take an Hour” for Wellness Starts this Week All Newport News Shipbuilding employees are eligible to receive a FREE flu shot and health screening as part of this year’s “Take an Hour for Wellness” (TAH) program. TAH, part of HII’s “BeWell for Life” wellness programs, will begin Tuesday, Sept. 20, and run through the end of November. Employees who are planning to receive a health screening can decrease their wait time by scheduling an appointment in advance via the TAH online scheduling system. Employees who opt to only get a flu shot do not need an appointment. Visit www.huntingtoningalls.com/tah to schedule an appointment or email interactivehealth@hii-nns.com for questions.

Career Pathways and Trades Training Host Local Educators for NNS Internship Twenty-four educators from public schools across southeastern Virginia participated in teacher internship programs held over the summer at Newport News Shipbuilding. Uniquely designed for teachers and professional school counselors, the Career Pathways initiative is a full-time two-week internship that gives school educators the opportunity to learn about NNS’ different engineering programs and trades. For two weeks, participants experience the environments and work that shipbuilders are involved with every day. They get hands-on experience as they work alongside welders, pipefitters and electricians who are building and maintaining the greatest ships in the world. Following the completion of the internship, educators will be able to incorporate their new knowledge into future lesson plans to help students prepare for careers in shipbuilding, manufacturing and other science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. “When teachers and counselors see and experience the shipyard for the first time, they are amazed at what we do; and they leave their internship with an appreciation of the skills required for the career opportunities at NNS,” said Teacher Intern Program Lead Susan Goss (O26). “A huge thank you to the shipbuilders who played a part in making the teacher interns’ experience a great year.” This year, the internship program that requires the coordinated efforts of Career Pathways (K18), Talent Acquisition (O20) and Production and Maintenance Skills Training (O26), marked its fifth consecutive year. To learn more about the success of this years’ program, view a video and news brief on the News Channel 13 website. For additional info about the program, visit the Career Pathways website.
