Employee Engagement Survey Begins This Week Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 21, all Newport News Shipbuilding employees will have the opportunity to participate in the company’s annual engagement survey, which measures how well employees are connected to NNS’ mission. The survey is facilitated through Gallup and results guide leaders’ understanding of how they are performing as a team – as well as what areas could be improved. Employees with company computer access will receive an email from Gallup with a link to the survey. Employees without company computer access will take the survey
at a designated time with their crew during work hours. A list of frequently asked questions is available on MyNNS. In addition to the engagement survey, hourly employees will have the opportunity to participate in a stay survey, which consists of 10 questions focused on employee retention and attracting new talent to NNS. Earlier this year, salaried employees had the opportunity to participate in this survey. Feedback obtained will help NNS create a work environment that inspires people to be their best.

Making Life Easier Behind the Scenes Shipbuilder Shavonda Eure (O45), a facilities planner, can provide the long version of her job at Newport News Shipbuilding, which improves the everyday lives of employees in ways seen and unseen. She can also give you the short version of what she does. “I do everything nobody wants to do,” she says with a laugh. Eure oversees 100% of waste removal at NNS, whether it be trash, scrap metals or dealing with the 134 portable toilets along the waterfront. With more than 70 contracted personnel under her direction, she handles the outside janitorial services, two major landfill contracts, oily waste landfill contract, dry dock cleanings and the janitorial vendor for the entire shipyard. She also handles the landscaping (inside and outside the gates) and snow removal for the sidewalks and parking lots, including parking lots leased by the Navy. “She is quite literally an army of one in a world of growing demands,” said Paula McElroy, Facilities and Real Estate manager. Eure started at NNS in 2008 as an X31 apprentice. Five years later, she landed in O45 and has been there since. “It was customer service, and it fit my personality,” she said. “I really love to help people.”

big or small the problem is,” she said. She has to stay ahead of the game. For example, if a winter storm is brewing, she watches the weather to get a jump on snow removal.
McElroy added: “O45 is a special group of people, dedicated to customer service and unafraid of the hard stuff. Shavonda is a natural fit for this team.”
When the shipyard receives visitors or welcomes a crowd to a keel laying or christening she, along with her co-partner Michele Affolter (O46), helps ensure that the public path traveled through the shipyard is clear and well maintained.
As someone who enjoys being busy and describes herself as a “servant leader type,” Eure is more comfortable being out on the waterfront than behind a desk. She works on improving her contractors’ efficiency.
While other jobs and different responsibilities might be in her professional future, she does not envision herself behind a desk at this moment.
“We have a lot to do,” she said. “I’m boots on the ground, no matter how
“I really love being hands on,” she said. trained, and the company is working through lingering pandemic impacts. “Despite these challenges, our mission remains clear. Our Navy sailors depend on us to deliver ships that will protect them as they go into harm’s way. No matter what your job title or department number is, your work makes this happen. It’s a noble calling, and we always answer,” Boykin said. “As models of excellence, you shine as an example for others, so be a beacon for new and veteran employees alike. Stand firmly for our standards, and keep demonstrating what our ‘Always Good Ships’ creed looks like in action.”

NNS President Jennifer Boykin said role models like Model of Excellence honorees are vital, especially now. The shipyard is busier than it has been in decades. At the same time, thousands of new shipbuilders are being hired and

AROUND THE YARD PEER Program Seeks Candidates for 20th Cohort
National Security Officer Appreciation Week
The Professional Enhancement and Enrichment Rotation (PEER) Program is preparing for the January 2023 onboarding of Cohort 20 and the celebration of the program’s 10-year anniversary.
Newport News Shipbuilding is observing National Security Officer Appreciation Week Sept. 18-24.
The PEER Program is a two-year rotation program for salaried individual contributors. It includes four different rotations in six-month cycles. The program was initially launched by NNS President Jennifer Boykin when she was vice president of Engineering and Design and known as the Engineering and Design Rotation Program (EDRP).
More than 100 uniformed security officers patrol NNS, providing 24/7 protection for shipbuilders, other on-site personnel and shipyard and Navy assets. Shipbuilders are encouraged to take a moment this week to thank NNS’ security officers.
In 2017, it expanded to include all full-time, salaried individual contributors and was retitled PEER. There is no shortage of success stories from the past 10 years. “Participating in the PEER Program has literally changed my life, and now I have a new and exciting career path,” said Anthony Edwards. He also praised PEER Program Manager Gary Figg for his mentorship. More than 25 EDRP/PEER graduates have moved into leadership roles and are now serving as PEER host managers. Over 50% of the program’s graduates have transferred into new home departments. The PEER program emphasizes professional and personal development towards an end goal of career fulfillment. “The PEER Program has meant lifelong professional development on a level I could not find anywhere else,” said Rueben Rosalez. Successful PEER participants grow to be innovative, collaborative, adaptive, results driven and engaged – the components of the program’s ICARE brand. Full-time salaried individual contributors who are interested in the PEER Program can register for a lunch and learn or open house event on MyNNS. The PEER nomination form and testimonials from participants are available on the PEER website on MyNNS. For more information, contact Gary Figg via email.

REMINDER: Time Certifications Time certifications are generated when someone other than the employee – a foreman or supervisor, for example – enters or changes the employee’s time. When this occurs, the employee must quickly certify whether or not the modifications are accurate. Employees review and address their time certifications by choosing “agree” or “disagree.” Employees are required to discuss rejected time certifications with Labor Compliance (O73) to resolve the time certification. Remember, every employee is responsible for their own daily time entry and ensuring their time charges accurately reflect time worked. For questions related to the time certification process, employees should contact their foreman/supervisor, or Labor Compliance (O73) at 688-3700 or visit the O73 website on MyNNS.
Get a Head Start on the Know Your Numbers Program The 2022-2023 Know Your Numbers program has begun. Salaried/nonrepresented Newport News Shipbuilding employees who are enrolled in an HII Anthem medical plan must complete the two program requirements – a health screening and a wellness profile – by March 31, 2023, to secure savings of $600 on their medical premiums in the 2023 plan year. Visit myquadmed.com/hii/kyn for step-bystep instructions on how to complete the program.
