NNS Achieves ISO 14001 Re-Certification 12 | 7 | 2015

November 2015 marked the successful completion of Newport News Shipbuilding’s fourth ISO 14001 environmental certification renewal. The certification is the international gold standard and is reserved for companies that demonstrate outstanding environmental stewardship. NNS originally obtained this certification in late 2003 and has successfully renewed its certification every three years.

“This is truly a celebration of the hard work we have done in the past years,” said Dwain Jenkins Jr., environmental engineer. “Thanks to each of you who continue to contribute, develop, and implement our Environmental Management System (EMS). Our company’s environmental policy states we are committed to stop pollution, obey rules, always improve and reduce waste (SOAR). And, once again you have demonstrated that together we can SOAR.”

NNS Kicks-Off Annual Holiday Food Drive Newport News Shipbuilding’s annual “Shipbuilders... Caring and Sharing” Holiday Food Drive to benefit the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank (VPF) kicked off today and will run through Friday, Dec. 18.

Labeled collection boxes have been placed inside designated NNS buildings (first floor locations only), warehouses and at piers, docks and trailers. Food drive boxes will not be placed outside of doors or at gates.

The purpose of the drive is to assist the foodbank in meeting the needs of the local community this holiday season. VPF serves the areas of Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, Matthews, Gloucester, York, James City, Surry and Poquoson.

The Foodbank accepts all non-perishable food donations (no glass containers). Canned items most needed include: meat, fish and protein (tuna, ham or chicken, beef stew, chili, peanut butter, canned/dried beans); fruits and vegetables (100 percent fruit juice... CONTINUED ON PG 3

Environmental Engineering Manager Steve Brinkman added, “Throughout the years and during auditing periods, NNS employees and contractors rise above the call of duty to SOAR in each of our tasks, which attributed to retaining this recertification. This is a team effort, but it was the high level of commitment from each individual that allowed us to achieve this goal. Thank you all for what you do. This is another example of the company’s commitment and each employees’ dedication toward excellence in all aspects of our business.” Additional information about ISO 14001 is available on the O27 Yardnet home page. For questions, contact Dwain Jenkins Jr. (O27) at 534-4066.

Apprentice Grad’s Ring Finds Its Way Back Home Earlier this year, Material Support Shipbuilder Sharon Berry’s (X36) nephew was helping to take down some trees in a neighborhood in Hampton when he noticed something shining in the dirt. “He knelt down to see what it was and realized it was a ring,” said Berry. “He picked the ring up and brushed it off and then noticed it was an Apprentice School graduation ring from the class of 1977. After checking with neighbors in the surrounding area, he gave the ring to my sister, who in turn gave the ring to me since they knew I worked at the shipyard.” Berry said she was determined to find the ring’s original owner. “I knew how much the ring must mean to its owner,” she said. “So, I contacted Apprentice School Craft Instructor Michael Reaves (O22) who works with me in the Machine Shop to see if he could help me find who the ring belonged to.” Reaves made several phone calls, including a call to Administrative Assistant Sally Krystyn (O22) at The Apprentice School. “Sally was instrumental in helping us,” Reaves said. “I showed her the ring and she was able to see initials engraved inside the ring. After that, we matched the initials with the graduating class

of 1977 and determined that the ring must belong to Master Shipbuilder Keith Strayer (O07).” Reaves called Strayer and verified the ring was his. “Mr. Reaves’ call caught me by total surprise,” Strayer said. “My ring was stolen from my home in January 2012. After that, I never expected to see the ring again.” Soon after, Reaves and Berry arranged a time to meet Strayer one day after work to give him his ring. “Sharon and Mike, and a lot of other people along the way who didn’t even know me, but still cared enough about me to get me my ring back,” said Strayer. “I will always be thankful for them and grateful for my ring.” On Dec. 4, Trades Director Robert Chappell presented Berry with an On-the-Spot Ethics award and special Apprentice School coin for her ethical behavior in returning the ring to Strayer. Want to nominate a fellow employee for an ethics award? If so, complete the nomination form (C-941) and return it to Catrina Hagwood (O18) in Bldg. 500-1.

Dear Shipbuilders: I have the difficult responsibility of announcing our next round of layoffs, which will take place on February 3 and will affect 738 employees. Because of the number of people being laid off, we are required to provide 60 days advance notice. The impacted employees are being notified today, and they will continue to work for the next 60 days. There is never a good time to make these reductions, and I know it is especially difficult to be notified just before the holidays. The decision for how and when to schedule layoffs is based on our workload, and only after all other options have been exhausted. Today, our priority is for the well-being of the impacted employees. All impacted employees working third and first shifts, who are here today, should be notified by 11 a.m. today. We will be notifying second shift employees this afternoon, and are in the process of notifying any impacted employees who are not at work today. We are providing benefits and transition assistance to help them in finding other employment. We understand this reduction in force impacts the employees being laid off, as well as those who remain. Additionally, our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available to employees who need on-site counseling and assistance during this difficult time, by calling 757-251-3760 or 1-855-400-9185. I know this news is difficult to hear. We are losing 738 great shipbuilders. During this stressful and challenging time, please remember that the workload valley has both a beginning and end as our workload increases again in 2017. My hope is that these shipbuilders will consider coming back once our workload increases. After the February 3 layoff, we still anticipate additional layoffs next year, but it is too early to know how many people will be impacted and precisely when it will happen. We are continuing to pursue additional growth opportunities and are committed to communicating updates. I appreciate all you are doing to focus on the work at hand. Strong, safe performance is the best way we can weather this workload valley.

Sincerely,

Matt Mulherin President

Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Verification Center Individuals Affected: Employees who have undergone a Federal background investigation for a new security clearance investigation or a reinvestigation.

Background: On September 30, 2015, OPM began mailing notification letters to individuals whose personal information was stolen in the cyber intrusion involving background investigation records. Impacted individuals are being notified by OPM via U.S. Postal Service mail. Due to the large volume of individuals affected, the notification process will continue through the second week of December 2015. The Federal Government has setup a verification center to assist individuals who have lost their PIN code or believe their data may be impacted but have not yet received notification letters.

Verification Center If you believe that you were impacted, but have not yet received your notification letter, OPM requests that you wait until mid-December before contacting the verification center. The Federal Government anticipates completing the mailing of notification letters by the end of the second week in December. Whether you enter your information through the verification center website or provide it to the call center agent, you will be asked to provide your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. This information will be used to determine whether you were affected by the cyber intrusion involving background investigation records. If you contact the verification center and they identify that your personal data: 

WAS COMPROMISED in this incident, you will receive a notification letter which lists your PIN code and enrollment directions in approximately 2-4 weeks through the U.S. Postal Service.

WAS NOT COMPROMISED in this incident, you will receive a letter confirming that you were not impacted in approximately 2–4 weeks through the U.S. Postal Service.

Individuals will be able to access the verification website via a link at www.opm.gov/cybersecurity 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. The site will be available through the end of December 31, 2018. If individuals cannot get their questions answered online, they may request assistance by calling 866-408-4555 and speak with an agent. The call center will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday.
