“LET’S GET READY TO RUM-BL-L-L-L-E!!!!” “In the white trunks, wearing Rockports: Michael the MIGHTty; in the yellow knee-highs with striped leggings wearing 18-inch red shoes: RO-nald McDON-ald.” There’s some sort of Murphy’s Law that has applied to me for many years: wherever I have lived – the closest McDonald’s “Restaurant” was also the worst one in the city. I parenthesize “restaurant” because, as my brother explains, “McDonald’s is not a restaurant, it’s a filling station.” Our closest (and worst) McDonald’s in Tampa was near MacDill Air Force Base’s gate one mile away. They could never get the orders right. The regional manager and I became pen pals. He would send sincere letters of apology, with gift coupons. Sometimes I would use them, sometimes I would stick to my principles. I boycotted that store and began going to the next closest one, two miles away. While getting my food, I would tell them, “I went the extra mile for you today!” Admittedly, some of their fare is tolerable. I can close my eyes and dredge my memory while chewing on a Big Mac, fantasizing that I’m eating a Frisch’s Big Boy. It almost works! I hate McDonald’s, primarily because of their marketing: focusing on the children. Which, granted, is a “Madison Avenue” stroke of genius, guaranteeing success! That’s why I hate them. Face it: when you buy a Happy Meal, you’re buying the toy with the food as a bonus. Do kids want that toy? You bet your sweet Power Ranger they do! The savvy parent will leave the toys in their packaging and hoard them away for a decade or two. By that time, the kids will be in college and those toys will be collectibles worth some bucks! I got Joy coffee at a further McDonald’s today. After the change was counted back to me, I was told: “Thank you, and come back and visit us!” That was nice! At the close one, all they say is “Have a Goot one” or “a Good’n.” I have no need for a baseball pitcher. I’ve always questioned what a “one” is until recently when I drove to a Plant City 7-11 to pick up a copy of “Lifestyles” since they’re not distributed in my county. I entered and first asked if I needed keys to use the restroom. As the clerk jingled the keys to me, she said, “Have a good one!” Now I know. Mike Wright can be found at home making bleu cheese burgers. Send your spare beef patties to him at micwrighthamo@gmail.com.
