We care for your pet like they’re part of our family!

O pt i o n s to H e lp O lde r Pets H ave the B e st Q ua li t y of Li fe By G e off G ardn e r, DVM As our pet’s age, we may hesitate to schedule routine dental cleanings or minor surgeries because of the risk, real or perceived, of anesthesia. In other situations, the decision not to proceed is made for us, based on the nature of the condition or overall health of the pet. This delay can leave our furry friends with unresolved pain or a lower quality of life. If the decision to proceed with a recommendation doesn’t appear likely, or possible, there are some simple medications that can help manage an infection, pain or other challenges faced by our loved ones. Many of these medications are available as a liquid and can provide temporary relief from the symptoms, especially those associated with dental disease. Clindamycin is one such antibiotic which can provide temporary relief for pets with chronic periodontal disease and other dental issues. Gabapentin is available in liquid or capsule formulations to help relieve pain from a variety of sources and can help our pets live a better quality of life. Some medications can even be administered to the skin of the ear for easy absorption. Other, stronger narcotic medications can help with tooth abscesses, and mouth pain. Occasionally a loss of appetite occurs even though no cause can be established. Other times, certain chronic diseases

such as kidney failure or hyperthyroidism in cats can cause dramatic weight loss. There are liquid medications, give once daily to help stimulate the appetite for dogs or cats. As our pets age, anxiety can become more pronounced, and is sometimes worse at night, making it difficult for anyone to get a good night’s sleep. There are some simple medications that can help ease this period of anxiety for our pets. Whether the challenges our pets face are related to pain, infection, anxiety, loss of mobility or appetite, there are good, often new options available to make sure they are as comfortable as possible. If your pet has had any recent changes to their lifestyle, please call your veterinarian to discuss some potentially simple treatments to help them have the best quality of life possible.
