Dealer’s handful “YOU’RE BUGGING ME, MAN!” This time of year, the above quote by the late, great Dick Shawn in the movie classic “It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” comes to mind. We’re now going through “The Insect Months.” Having just exited “May Fly Month,” we now find ourselves in the throes of “June Bug Month.” Aside from “June Bug” being the nickname given to Prince by Mavis Staples, what exactly is a June Bug, and how did they get that name? These members of the scarab family are one-half to five-eighth inches long and reddish-brown in color. There are at least 100 species of these beetles which are related to the scarabs we’re familiar with from ancient Egyptian symbols and hieroglyphics. Being beetles, they also sport shiny wing covers called elytra. June bugs can cause damage to gardens, lawns and pastures. They are nocturnal, and feed from dusk through the evening hours in order to avoid predators. They derive their name from the fact that adult June bugs emerge from the soil at the end of spring or the beginning of the summer. They are generally harmless, but because they are attracted to light, they can make you miserable when you want to spend time relaxing on your patio or porch. EVERY month is “Mosquito Month” in Florida. In fact, the mosquito is the state bird. In South Tampa, for instance, it is said that they grow so large that they often mate with hummingbirds. No one loves “Love Bugs,” but we still need to add “Love Bug Month” to our list. These periodic pests are a scourge we would all be happy to see eliminated. Many years ago, the now-defunct Tampa Tribune ran a haiku contest in which the 5-7-5 form had to be based on Love Bugs. The grand prize was a squeegee, a gallon of windshield washing solution and a screen that attached across the grill of the car. My first-place winning entry was as follows: Smiling Cheek to Cheek Finally got Big Momma - Ford Interruptus! Perhaps some enterprising food entrepreneur can turn them into a musthave nouveau appetizer or, perhaps, an olive or onion replacement in a martini. These days, Mike can often be found pressure washing the front of his car and scrubbing it down with dryer sheets.
