ZooTampa Will Reopen Stringray Habitat Where 12 Rays Died Last Year Information and image from “Tampa Bay Times” ZooTampa at Lowry Park has announced it is reopening a habitat it shut down last year after a dozen stingrays died suddenly, WTSP reported. In a news release, the zoo says it has “reimagined” a state-of-the-art version of Stingray Bay that will open by the end of 2022, zoo spokeswoman Sandra Torres said. Guests will once again be able to touch and feed rays. In a statement, the zoo said the 34,000-gallon renovated habitat will be home to cownose and Southern rays. The walls will be low enough for kids to reach into the water, but the zoo says there will also be plenty of rest areas and hideaways for the rays to ensure the animals are comfortable. “Stingray Bay also features a truly unforgettable opportunity to wade into the water for a rare up-close-and-personal encounter with these amazing animals,” ZooTampa wrote in a news release. In May 2021, zookeepers were stunned to find 12 stingrays had perished mysteriously. An investigation indicated that gas bubbles were caused by a system malfunction that the zoo called “a supersaturation event.” A crack in portions of a pipe caused the rays to experience gas embolisms. The result was similar to the “bends” in human scuba divers. Those bubbles in the bloodstream are believed to have killed the rays. The exhibit had been open since 2001 and is hugely popular because zoo patrons have direct access to pet the rays. They can also buy shrimp and offer it to the rays. The zoo has installed an updated habitat with a new water management system. The remodeled Stingray Bay will include redundancies, safeguards and new procedures to ensure there is no repeat of last year’s tragedy, according to WTSP.
