Red Tide Concerns at Boca Grande Beach
Information and image from ABC-7.com
With recent Red Tide algal blooms along the Gulf Coast and near Boca Grande Beach, here’s what you can do to keep yourself safe.
According to ABC-7, Florida Department of Health in Lee County health officials said some people may have short-lived respiratory symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation similar to cold symptoms. Some people with breathing problems such as asthma might experience more severe symptoms.
Symptoms usually go away once a person leaves the area or goes indoors, the department said. Health officials recommend that people experiencing these symptoms stay away from the beach areas or go into an air conditioned area.
The Health Department also recommended that residents and visitors do not swim around dead fish at Boca Grande Beach, don’t harvest or eat molluscan shellfish and distressed or dead fish from this location.
Pets and livestock should be kept away from the water, sea foam and dead sea life, health officials said. Residents living in beach areas are advised to close windows and run the air conditioner.
