Festival Season Has Sprung S

pring is coming, whether it feels like it or not. While the official start of the season is March 19, spring abides by no mere mortal’s rules. It comes and goes at a pace that surprises even the most prepared of us every month. For many Floridians, spring begins with the start of the numerous festivals that the months of March and April house. Too many to count, these festivals act as an invitation for Florida natives to welcome spring with open arms as they begin to shed their winter woes and clothes. From the Gulf to the Atlantic, festival season is just beginning. BIKE WEEK One of these festivals is one simply called “Bike Week”. Centered around Daytona Beach, this weeklong festival begins March 6 and ends March 15 and presents the opportunity to get out into the fresh air. This year will be Bike Week’s 79th year running, and they’re not holding back with the number of festivities. This huge event attracts fellow riders on an international scale, creating a culturally rich atmosphere of different languages and stories. Thousands of bikers are expected to be in attendance, making for a bustling and electrifying weeklong party. Featured events include the vintage and custom bikes show, concerts and several barbecues. From swapmeets to bike shows to bar and saloon meet ups, Bike Week 2020 holds the promise of excitement and making new friends. Visit their website, www.officialbikeweek.com/ , to learn more. SHARK TOOTH FESTIVAL If you’re looking for something to do with visiting family or even just something that differs from the mundane, Shark Tooth Festival in Venice is a great way to greet spring. Named “The Shark Tooth Capital of the World”, this festival allows you

to get up close with the classic oceanic predator’s chompers. Paired with great food, music and vendors, this festival ensures a great way to celebrate spring on the beach. Start planning now, because although this short three-day festival doesn’t start until April 3, they’re expecting a big turnout for the weekend. Learn more at their website: www.specialolympicsfloridasarasot.godaddysites.com/ . STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL I wouldn’t be able to talk about Florida springtime festivals unless the Florida Strawberry Festival was included, and rightfully so. This grand festival pulls an average of 500,000 folks annually from all over the state in a celebration of spring, strawberries, and community. The 11-day event has many events for its visitors to attend, ranging from entertainment such as Rascal Flatts or 98 Degrees, to carnival rides and food. But this famous festival doesn’t stop there—you can enter various contests such as the art show, livestock competitions, or even the Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest. Learn more about the festival at www.flstrawberryfestival.com/ . Spring has sprung and so have our festivals. Whether you’re looking for something to do on the open road or with your family, Florida’s spring events never disappoint. There’s something for everyone no matter where you look. More details for all these festivals can be found at their respective websites, including tentative schedules, scheduled talent, and directions.

Save Our Cottages of Indian Rocks Beach By T Michele Walker

Helen Tilston painting en plein aire at Indian Rocks Beach. Subject Blue Heron Cottages at IRB

View from painter Mary Rose’s cottage

I

t’s a technicolor summer day, circa 1966. My father, mother, sister, our dog, Ginger, and I are all crammed into a 1965 burgundy Plymouth Fury for our annual pilgrimage from Orlando to Indian Rocks Beach. Each summer my family went home to IRB for a glorious two-week vacation. I can still feel the thrill of turning on to Gulf Blvd., seeing the rows of cottages lining the beach. When visiting Indian Rocks Beach today, gone are the rows of cottages, replaced by high rise condominiums, hotels, apartments and McMansions. If you’re observant, you can still spy a cottage here and there, a beloved witness to a treasured past. For this, we can thank three plein aire cottage artists: Mary Rose Holmes, Helen Tilston and Violetta Chandler, the founders of Save Our Cottages. Fifth generation Floridian Mary Rose reflects, “Helen, Violetta and I met in Indian Rocks Beach 20 years ago, when the building boom was happening and these old cottages were getting smashed and the condos were replacing them. When we saw the beautiful cottages being torn down, we were just trying to get a memory of them on canvas. The people of the town started buying our paintings off our easels. These people realized the beauty of these historic cottages and they started the movement with us to ‘save our cottages’.” Helen Tilston, a talented Irish artist, elaborates, “As a plein aire oil painter, I have exhibited and, like Mary Rose and Violetta, have won awards for my paintings. I divide my time between Indian Rocks Beach in the fall and winter months and Ireland and Europe for the rest of the year. One of our greatest compliments has been a letter from the Mayor of IRB who stated, “… [Mary Rose, Violetta and Helen] have turned the lights back on at Indian Rocks Beach and the residents have fallen in love with their city again. [Your work has] resulted in residents attending planning and zoning meetings at IRB city hall and objecting to variances being given for cottages that were slated for demolition.’” Violetta Chandler, a fifth-generation artist from Russia, is an award-winning artist that has painted all of her life. She moved to Sarasota in 1995 and taught painting at the Ringling School of Art, the Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Largo and worked as an Instructor of Impressionist oil painting at St. Petersburg Community College. Mary Rose described what this project means to the trio: “Today, you can walk or ride down Gulf Blvd. and still see the beach and wonderful old cottages and not have the ‘Great Wall of Florida’ as you see in most beach communities. We have made progress beyond our hopes and dreams...” To learn more about Save Our Cottages and the plein aire artists, check out their website https://www.saveourcottagesdoc.org/#artistswith-a-cause where you will find their award-winning documentary “Save Our Cottages”. For information on where to purchase paintings, please email tilston188@yahoo.com or phone 813-294-2272 (Mary Rose Holmes). *** “Born in St. Pete and raised in Orlando, T Michele Walker is a native Floridian to the core. She’s worn many hats throughout the years from professional actress singer at Walt Disney World, educator, director, writer of plays, musicals and children’s operas, four of which were performed at Carnegie Hall. Now living in Sarasota, Michele is a freelance writer and correspondent, theater and music critic for the Herald Tribune.”

I

am crestfallen, dejected. But let’s stick with crestfallen. The word origin is animal-related, and my unhappiness has everything to do with an animal: with an article I read concerning the emotional life of dogs. It’s no secret I’m a dog lover. When I started writing, we cohabitated with two beautiful Labrador Retrievers, Bette and Davis. They inspired my first book, How Old Am I in Dog Years? I believe they lived happily to the ripe old ages of 15 and 16, respectively. I also believed they loved us. Now there’s Sam, a 17-pound rough coat Russell Terrier, my first small dog. I’ve discovered a small dog is a different experience. First of all, I can lift him, which I do, frequently. And while he’s in my arms, I plant kisses on his head, and he, in turn, licks my face. Sam sleeps in our bed and cuddles. Sam follows me around the house. When he wants my attention he’s jealous if my focus is elsewhere. I’m his primary caregiver and he’s clearly attached to me. He forgives me for giving him sink baths. I adore Sam, and was convinced the feeling was reciprocal. Until now. I thought he loved me for me. Because he senses I’m a good person who occasionally feeds him table scraps, and takes him to the dog park. Because I rub his belly and tell him he’s a very good dog. I thought our bond was unique, and in his dog brain, I was special. Wrong! Said article revealed an inconvenient truth. Yes, my dog loves me, but not because I’m me. He can’t help it. It’s in his canine DNA! Apparently, dogs have an amazing ability to bond with other species. Raise a dog with humans, it’ll bond with humans. But raise a dog with sheep, it’ll bond with sheep. Or goats. Or penguins. You name it. To quote, “dogs have an abnormal willingness to form strong emotional bonds with anything that crosses their path.” I could be replaced by a robot had Sam been introduced to one when he was still in doggie diapers. This knowledge is most disappointing. I almost feel betrayed, although I realize it’s not Sam’s fault. But now I’m confused. When Sam stares up at me with those big, brown, soulful eyes, is he appreciating me, or might I just as readily be an elephant? But humans must be resilient. I wish I could unlearn this new discovery, but I can’t. I can only hope one day soon animal research will prove to be like health research. Last month eggs were banned, and caffeine put you 24 hours nearer death. But research this month says to eat eggs several times a week, and coffee gives you an edge when playing “Jeopardy.” So, I’ll diligently read the newspaper, searching for studies that negate the previous findings. Ideally, the next wave of animal scientists will uncover evidence that dogs are uniquely programmed to bond with humans. Particularly with women in their seventies. Nothing beats The Florida Orchestra live by Kelly SmiTh

N

o matter how many times you hear Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons in the elevator, nothing compares to the synergy of seeing it live on stage. Just like nothing matches the thrill of fingers flying across the keyboard for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, or the goosebumps as redemption rises from despair in Bach’s St. John Passion. Experience it all live with The Florida Orchestra throughout March. Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (March 6-8): Just one Joyce Yang reason why Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos are so difficult: He had famously large hands that could span 12 keys. One of the toughest is his Piano Concerto No. 3, called the “Mount Everest” for the piano because it’s a real thriller to watch live – especially with electrifying pianist Joyce Yang. Michael Francis conducts the program, which also includes Beethoven’s playful Symphony No. 8 and Sibelius’ final Symphony No. 7. Kids and teens get in free with Classical Kids tickets to this and all Tampa Bay Times Masterworks concerts. Be sure to come 1 hour early for the Pre-concert Conversation with Maestro Francis. Bach’s St. John Passion (March 20-22): This is the first time The Florida Orchestra has performed Bach’s choral masterpiece retelling the Crucifixion – one of the most famous Easter works in the world. Michael Francis conducts, featuring The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, in venues throughout Tampa Bay. Bright Side of Beethoven morning Coffee Concert (March 25 & 26): Discover the joyful side of Beethoven, with selections from Symphony No. 8, Leonore Overture, part of Piano Concerto No. 4 featuring the Young Artist Competition winner Marco Jimenez, and more. Stuart Malina conducts. Free coffee and doughnuts. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (April 3-5): A night with TFO’s premier strings, directed by lead violinist Jeffrey Multer, includes Vivaldi’s timeless masterpiece along with Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings and more. Free tickets for kids and teens in advance. If you go: Florida Orchestra performs regularly at the Straz Center in Tampa, Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Tampa Bay Times Masterworks and Raymond James Pops series tickets are $18-$48. Tickets at FloridaOrchestra.org and 727.892.3337 or 1.800.662.7286.

Status: In a Relationship By Michael B. Wright

O

n social media, I occasionally see the status: “In a Relationship”. To me, this is a deliberately vague statement which could mean different things. It may mean that the significant other is immature and unwilling to make a commitment. It could mean that they are of the same sex and are not quite ready to let the world know. The word “relationship” itself is vague and can have multiple meanings. Many people have a relationship with the personage of whomever or whatever they define as their Creator. Some have a relationship with their home, their car, their pets or their television sets (especially during Super Bowl Sunday). Many define success by wealth, position, power, influence or status. I base success upon one’s ability to develop and maintain good relationships with other people. There are as many different kinds of such relationships as there are different kinds of love: agape, storge, philia, eros, pragma, philautia, ludus. The Greek word “storge” indicates a close familial love, i.e. family relationships. My wife and I are nanny and manny to two brothers, a 5-year-old and a 9-year old. A few months ago, they were bickering. “Poppa, he’s pointing at me! Make him stop!” I instantly flashed back to me and my brother,

Richard, as kids, doing the same exact thing. I recalled the two of us playing on a blanket in the back yard one day. Rich started crying loudly after he’d cut himself on the edge of a round Mason jar seal. Our Mom rushed out, lifted me up by one arm, and hit me as I yelled “I didn’t do anything!” In reflection, I realized that my normal behavior must have warranted such a response from her. Rich and I spent many years apart when I went into the Navy and when he moved to Arizona to be Mom’s caregiver during her final years. We really bonded when my wife and I flew out to visit for a week or so. After the boys’ pointing episode, I contacted Rich saying that I wanted to apologize. “Did I pick on you a lot when we were kids?” “Mike, I hated you growing up!” Now, we live roughly an hour apart. With

differing schedules and responsibilities, we strive to get together periodically for a “Guy Day”, leaving our wives at home while getting together to play catch-up, reminisce, laugh and encourage each other. The beer’s not bad either. Although he’s four years my junior, I have the highest degree of respect for my “little” brother and I value our relationship.

When it’s your eyes… good may not be good enough. Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions treated by ophthalmologists and usually occur as part of the normal aging process. St. Luke’s surgeons have been trailblazers in the innovations that make cataract surgery one of the safest and most regularly performed surgeries in the United States. Pit Gills, MD

M

arch is Women’s History Month, or, as the more avid among us call it, Women’s HERstory Month. But history or HERstory, (tomato –tomahto), March honors the contributions of women to historical events, as well as contemporary society. We mark with pride the females who fought for social justice: the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and those who broke the glass ceiling in formerly male-dominated fields. As a humor writer, I would like pay homage to the pioneer women of one such formerly male-dominated field: the world of comedy, particularly stand-up. While it’s true that comediennes, have entertained us for many decades, it was usually a collaboration: a film, a radio or TV show. Funny ladies such as Gracie Allen, Lucille Ball, even Elaine May found success with male partners. So who were the early women who had the courage to stand up on their own? Totie Fields: Tiny Totie Fields, in 1950, was a rare woman in this man’s world, paving the way for future women comics. At age 20 she broke the gender barrier and became one of the first female MCs in night clubs. She eventually became a fixture on the Ed Sullivan Show, which brought her into the homes of America.

Funny Ladies!

By SuSan Goldfein

Belle Barth: Also performing in the 50s, Belle Barth was the first pottymouthed female comedian of our era. She was funny, raunchy, and like her male counter-part, Lenny Bruce, had the privilege of being arrested during a performance. Belle broke ground for the likes of Joan Rivers, Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman. Moms Mabley: From a tragic young life, Jacky “Moms” Mabley rose to become known as the Mother of Black Comedy. She entertained in the 50s, 60s and 70s appearing in a housedress and floppy hat. She went from minstrel shows to playing Carnegie Hall, tackling topics considered too edgy at the time, including racism and sexuality. At age 27, she revealed she was a lesbian, becoming one of the first openly gay comedians of our time. Phyllis Diller: Phyllis Diller entered the comedy world at age 40. In her overthe-top costumes and makeup, Diller’s Lifestyles After 50 • Pinellas Park • March 2020 • page 14

comedy act was saucy, self-deprecating, and punctuated by her trademark cackle. She pioneered the one-liner. The target of her act was her husband, “Fang,” turning the tables on male comics who targeted their wives. Joan Rivers: Rivers’ early 60s routines were talky, single-girl rifts about her inability to land a husband. Unlike Diller, who was flamboyant in her attire, Rivers wore little black dresses and prim updos. She was quick, brash and often angry. Her humor was personal, revealing her life with humor. She is encapsulated by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amazon’s hit series about a woman, alone on stage, trying to succeed in the 50s in the male-dominated world of stand-up comedy. There are more I would like to mention: Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Carol Burnett, but I believe I’ve run out of space. So, as the MC at the comedy club beseeches the audience: Please give it up for the funny ladies!

Grab your green garb and go to a St. Paddy’s Day gathering By Carlene Cobb

Florida’s Gulf Coast lifestyle is all about celebrations, and St. Patrick’s Day is a popular occasion. So, grab your green garb and go! Irish music, shepherd’s pie, Guinness and whiskey all flow freely on St. Paddy’s Day. The following parades, pubs and festivals are sure to please. re you looking for an easy slow cooker recipe for St. Patrick’s Day? The typical recipes are easy to come by, but not always easy to execute (who wants to make a brine and soak their brisket for several hours to a day?). Nothing says “Irish it was spring” quite like the classic dish of corned beef and cabbage. Celebrate the start of warmer weather with this simple crockpot meal:

et’s face it, we all watch TV. Whether it’s the news, Real Housewives or golf, we’ve all got a reason to watch. But nobody anyplace in the world doesn’t grumble about the price of their TV service. It doesn’t matter if you have cable, satellite or carrier pigeon, the cost keeps rising and the companies seem to find more ways to take money from our already tight budgets. Reducing or eliminating these bills is the genesis of the concept of “Cutting the Cord” to the cable companies. The central concept of cutting the cord is reducing or eliminating what you pay for these cable TV services. There are two primary approaches, the first involves cutting the cable altogether and going back to the good old days of TV over the air, and the second involves changing how you get your TV services to reduce the cost and keep it there. This article describes each approach, the pros and cons and what you should expect while implementing each. The “Good Old Days” approach involves the complete elimination of paid TV services. In effect, you buy an antenna one time, point it to a major city and you get your TV over the air. Fun fact, many of the channels you’ll get over the air are actually broadcasted in high definition, so they’ll be crystal clear on your TV screen and besides the one-time expense of buying and installing an antenna, you’ll never get a cable bill again. I’ll answer the question before you ask it – the cost of antenna ranges from $25-$150 depending on how far away from a city you are. The “Nick the Cable” approach is a little bit different that the “Good Old Days” approach because you effectively eliminate the TV channels from the cable company and use the Internet to “stream” the channels to your TV. Now, I know what you’re thinking – how do I stream and where is this river coming from? Well, the river are companies on the Internet that license many of the same shows that you currently watch and broadcast it over the Internet at lower prices (e.g. Netflix, Hulu etc.). Once you have a streaming service, the rest is history as your TV is most likely ready to stream from these accounts for you with Roku, Amazon FireTV etc. So, you’re probably wondering, is cutting the cable worth it? Most cable cutters will respond with one simple question: do you enjoy paying upwards of $250 a month for TV? If the answer is no, then cable cutting is for you.
