Lending a helping hand this holiday season Dear Readers, A few years ago, a friend of mine taught me the true meaning of the holiday season when she dragged Amanda Smith, me with her to Editor volunteer at the Metropolitan Ministries. As we joined hundreds of other fellow Tampanians loading up grocery carts full of toys and gifts, I realized nothing quite says Christmas like a little selfless service alongside your fellow citizens. While my service ended with a smile from the last family to check out of the Metropolitan Ministries line, there are many who have crafted their lives around fulfilling the role as a community servant - some well known, and some lesser so, but both changing so many lives they’ve lost count. The interview with local news anchor Steve Andrews is astounding in the sheer mass of people he has helped over his decades at News Channel 8 as the official face of the segment, “8 on Your Side.” Steve’s been on your side alright, taking down everything from dog bandits to questionable car dealership owners - and his personal favorite, a corrupt politician or two. As he investigates cases of public

wrongdoing in search of all that all too rare sweet taste of justice, Andrews “gives a voice to the voiceless” as he calls it, standing up for the little guys who feel taken advantage of by larger insitutions with the money and power to get away with just a little too much. Read our Q&A feature with Steve Andrews this month, as he recalls

the best of his investigative reporting career and shares common holiday pitfalls to avoid being swindled this year. The work he has done for the community of Tampa Bay is no small feat, and the breadth with which his passion for exposing those in power taking advantage of the weak offers hope to a nation still nursing an epic post-election hangover.

While Andrews graces your television screen nightly, regaled as Tampa Bay’s most recognized and honored Investigative team. reporter - with seven Emmys to prove it, there are other heroic acts of helping hands, happening a little more quietly. In the hushed halls of the Temple Terrace branch of the Taoist Tai Chi society, veteran instuctor Dr. Brian Lau, AP, DOM, C. SMA, guides students through the ancient art of Tai Chi. Just two suites down from the Tai Chi practice in the Sherwood Forest business plaza on 56th Street, Lau rounds out his Tai Chi instruction mastery with a thriving eastern medicine practice, aptly titled the Ideal Balance Center for Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine. Read an exciting interview with Lau in this issue, as he reveals how this ancient art form is far more than a physical endeavor, but a deep inner-healing experience, with the capacity to increase our propensity towards patience and compassion - both often increasingly needed as the holiday season kicks in to full swing. Not only does Lau share how this can help especially at this time of year, he also shares story after story of lives changed through his community work. He tells of Tai Chi practitioners whose lives have been transformed over the course of learning this aging art - including the miraculous recovery they saw as inner-peace permeated their interpersonal relationships, digestion, you name it. Enjoy this issue demonstrating how giving to your community is not only inspiring but fulfilling, anytime of year. Happy Holidays, Amanda Smith

Tis The season for Tai chi How this ancient internal art can help combat holiday stress The stress of a change/increase in diet If you have high blood pressure, it’s always important for you to watch your diet. The holidays are not without a major increase in food consumption, and many of your favorite indulgences, but luckily, some studies have shown that tai chi can help lower your blood pressure, while other research points to a drop in cholesterol levels as well. That helps lower your chances of heart disease and may even increase your fitness level. Tai chi can also be a great way to gently get you back into moving around if you have diabetes and have been inactive, both of which will surface when your body is taken from its routine and given extra challenges to process. Reduces Inflammation Inflammation occurs anytime the body is

by Amanda Smith The Benefits of Tai Chi

T

he ancient Chinese practice of tai chi combines slow, deliberate movements, meditation, and breathing exercises for an internal arts unlike any exercise class you’ve ever experienced - and just in time for the holidays. As the end of the year rolls around, it becomes a time of family fun and excitement but also of extra commitments and stress. Tai Chi can be the perfect anecdote to all of your holiday stress as this is one program where the routines were not designed to burn calories or raise your heart rate. Instead, tai chi can help your circulation, balance, and alignment, as well as restore your energy, known as chi. The low-impact moving meditations include standing and balancing and are excellent fitness activities for beginners, those with health conditions, or anyone suffering from the perilous holiday stessors of Christmas time. The moves are really good for anyone anytime in fact, as the slow movements bring better balance and muscle control. The postures flow together without pause, making tai chi look like slow, graceful dances that keep your body in constant motion. You can take a class or do the exercises outdoors, on your own, or with a group. Lifestyles After 50 • December 2016 • page 6

So sweet and gentle This moving meditation is a very lowimpact exercise that puts minimal stress on joints and muscles. Strong muscles for any holiday heavy lifting (wrapping presents, cooking) Core: You may not be doing moves like crunches, but you’ll be using your core muscles as you flow from move to move. Arms: You’ll be surprised how familiar you become with arms by engaging in these gentle martial arts. Legs: Tai Chi movements are done standing, so tai chi uses your leg muscles, but not in an intense way, again, just enough to help you become familiar with them. Back: This is where Tai Chi really shines. use your whole body, including the muscles in your back. Aerobic: No. These are moving meditations, not cardio workouts, but Tai Chi will open the lungs are improve airflow. Overall strength: When you do tai chi, you’re building strength in a subtle way. Your body weight is all you need. It’s not about powering through muscular poses, but about engaging your whole body.

confronted with more stressors than it is equipped to handle. This can be anything from an increase in alcohol intake to not getting enough sleep, both of which are hallmarks of the holiday season. Make tai chi your point of solace in a busy holiday season where there’s always something to be stressed about. Flexibility improves our range of motion Being flexible keeps our joints, muscles – our entire body – healthy and allows us to be more active. Jim, a 56-year-old retired fireman, is a good example of how Tai Chi can improve flexibility. Because of an on-the-job injury, Jim couldn’t lift his arms any higher than his shoulders. Otherwise healthy, he experienced ongoing frustration. He couldn’t reach up to cupboards; he couldn’t paint his house; he couldn’t even reach a book on a shelf above his head. Jim had given up hope of ever returning to normal. Then, simply to get exercise, he took up Tai Chi. Within six months, normal flexibility had returned to his shoulder joints. His life changed. He could reach. What’s a better Christmas gift than that? Merry merry mind control - it’s all in your head The mind is the most important aspect of health. It’s a universally accepted fact that the mind controls the body. Surely you’ve heard of people overcoming

disabilities because of their positive attitudes and strong minds? And Tai Chi, as one of the most powerful mind-body exercises, teaches the student to be aware of the intrinsic energy from which he or she can perceive greater self-control and empowerment. A breath of fresh air Yes. Classes can be held indoors or outdoors, making Tai Chi a perfect way to get some air during the hectic holiday season, especially as it opens the lungs. What Else You Should Know Cost: Yes. The costs are minimal. To learn the movements, it’s best to sign up for a class or follow a DVD. Good for Beginners: Tai Chi is an excellent practice for beginners and is very accessible. At Home: Yes. The moving meditations can be done at home. Medicaid planning and handling this roller coaster of emotion! by Steven J. Gibbs, Esq.

edicaid planning, particularly for a parent or spouse, can be described as an emotional roller coaster. The financial and other emotional pressures can make this a very frightening time, and families can become confused over basic necessary decisions. When a loved one needs full skilled nursing assistance, it is all too common for families to either make rash decisions or avoid making the necessary decisions to protect finances and arrange proper care. All too often, folks who are declining physically do not want to acknowledge their physical needs. Imagine how difficult it is to face one’s own mortality and declining physical abilities. This difficulty often culminates in a loved one’s refusal to seek needed medical feedback. Families often find it difficult to accept the decline of a loved one and thus may procrastinate in locating skilled nursing assistance or otherwise seeking help. I’ve often observed that families in the midst of these kinds of major transitions can become unable to make necessary changes even if circumstances demand it. I believe this is a combination of a grieving process AND the difficult subject matter involved. Families often continue paying out of pocket rather than apply for Medicaid assistance and this is a needless expenditure of valuable resources. When emotional paralysis strikes families, often negative financial consequences are the result. For example, I’ve observed families continue to pay for skilled nursing care out of pocket for months on end before finally making the decision to apply for Medicaid assistance. The above problems are common and can be most effectively addressed through... getting educated AND partnering with caring, qualified professionals who are willing and able to offer an objective voice about the circumstances.

certainly know it’s not appropriate to be using county property to be placing bets on the dogs. And when we requested the records him and his staff started destroying them. They were destroying public records, which is against the law and of course he’s the highest prosecutor in the county and he’s breaking the law himself. n a world full of devisive politics, environmental ruin and ever-widening economic disparity, it’s all too easy to become desperately discouraged at the state of things, wondering...where have all the good guys gone? But if you look hard enough, hidden beneath an endless sea of crooks and villians, a real live super hero emerges, reinstilling your faith in all things good and true. If there was ever a news anchor we could always count on to be “on our side,” it’s News Channel 8’s Steve Andrews. A veteran of the broadcast journalism world, Steve Andrews is unrivaled as Tampa Bay’s most recognized Investigative team reporter - with a whopping seven Emmys and a trail of justice-served following him wherever he goes. We spoke to the investigative reporter about the highlights of such an exciting career and how best we can protect ourselves and our assets this holiday season. Q: I know that a lot of our audience is familiar with you and your work, but how did you get involved with journalism to begin with or broadcast? Steve: I started at a very young age actually. I read the papers when I was a kid and I would actually sit with a newspaper and a typewriter, physically rewriting the stories to make them a little more entertaining or more understandable - it was a way for me to envision myself as one of them, really. But once I saw 60 Minutes, I was hooked - that’s how I really began to get into the idea of getting into news. My first investigative piece was actually about a car dealership, Big John Naughton Ford. It was like the seventh largest Ford dealership in the country and we found that they were doing just awful things to their customers. Throwing keys on the roof so people couldn’t get away they’d literally keep them there until they bought a car. They would tell them that they’re selling them a car and deceiving them, financing it at an enticing interest rate of 4 or 5 percent, only to found out it was actually 20 - 25 percent interest they were being charged. They were targeting elderly women, who had no idea what kind of car they were buying, so it was a lot of smoke and mirrors. It was corLifestyles After 50 • December 2016 • page 10

ruption from the sales force right up to the owner. Our series of stories on the dealership actually launched an investigation by the state attorney’s office - and they arrested the top four executives for criminal racketeering, which was really kind of unheard of, and the place was shut down. At that point the new director said hey, would you like to do this fulltime - and how could I say no? Q: It sounds like your first big taste of success was all it took... Every phone in the newsroom was ringing and it was actually a little frightening, seeing as they were a huge advertiser at the time. But the station stood by us and said we don’t care if they’re an advertiser or not. It was an eye-opening and thrilling story all at the same time. Q: That really elevates journalism to a whole new level of protecting the people. There must be so much gratification in that. Steve: Yeah there’s gratification and there’s frustration. I will tell you that I think for us, we’ve always gravitated to the stories where the greatest disempowerment occurs, The less voice they have to speak up for themselves, the more we chase the story. That’s really the voice of the voiceless right there. Our goal is always to hold the powerful accountable.

Q: How do you choose which stories that you’re going to pursue? Steve: At this point I’m looking for stories we haven’t done before, in the 31 years I’ve been doing this, But I think there’s a couple of things; people who are adamant and keep pushing and clawing us and saying hey I need your help or this or that, even if it’s a story we’ve done before. If somebody is really adamant and they have stuff that they can give us like documents - any proof or evidence, that makes our job a little bit easier. If we’re made aware of some person, organization, whatever that’s exploiting kids or the elderly in any way, shape or form that becomes kind of personal for us. I’m a parent, so I’m always touched by kids stories, and my mom is no longer here, but when she was around she would always tell me about these different things she ran across - like people calling to scam her. Really, we just look for folks who are abused, not just physically, but I mean abused by sales people, abused by government, abused by corporations, that’s what we look for. Q: Is there a standout moment of your career that you’re really proud of? Steve:We did a story that really wasn’t a consumer-related story so much as it was a Law & Order type story where we found that the state attorney was placing bets on dogs from his office, which I don’t know that that’s illegal, but I

Well, the state attorney didn’t show up for work, because there was media camped out all around the courthouse waiting for him to show up. When we went to his apartment, it was clear something was going on. So we were kind of driving around the complex and we saw this guy sitting against a pillar underneath the crosstown, so we went over and checked it out and it was the state attorney. He had killed himself and we found his body. We became the news that day unfortunately, but it definitely stands out as one of the most stunning moments of my career. It was tragic really, he was a compulsive gambler, bouncing checks, but prosecuting people for that. So I think his world was crashing down right in front of him. I don’t know that he would have done any jail time, but he would have been so disgraced that I suppose he chose suicide unfortunately and tragically. It was really awful, but not everyday can be rescuing animals and looking like a superhero. Either way, I’m grateful everyday I get the chance to make a difference.

Stay tuned next month for part two with Andrews!

by Teri Pizza ome fresh fruits and vegetables are loved all year round, found in the grocery store at every season and heralded as classic favorite of American households no matter what the calendar says. Then there are others, like the pumpkin, the acorn squash, and the cranberry, that enjoy very specific heydays, where they’re suddenly the special guest at the party. This season, let’s celebrate the beloved cranberry in all its seasonal glory. Cranberries are loved this time of year not only because they are agriculturally in season, but also because they provide vitamins not readily available in other fresh fruits during the winter. Their tartness is also an excellent means of cutting the fat and richness of things like pork, goose, duck and turkey, and of course, we can’t leave out the fact that they’re pretty, with the color of the season and all. These little berries also have some interesting trivia, like their pseudonym, the “bounceberry.” They earned this curious nickname when it was discovered, centuries ago, that they could bounce, which quickly became the favorite way of identifying which berries were the ripest. The verdict: the best berries bounce.

Besides being interesting, the cranberry is full of nutritional benefits, including the ability to improve the lives of people who suffer from stomach ulcers, cavities and heart disease. Some actually call the fruit “better than broccoli” because it delivers five times the antioxidant content of the green stuff. In fact,

when compared to 19 common fruits, cranberries contained the highest level of the cancer-fighting antioxidant phenols. The reason for cranberries’ reputation to treat and fight urinary tract infections is because its juice contains hippuric acid which helps reduce the ability of E. coli bacteria to stick to the walls of urinary

tracts. In addition, cranberries may also lower LDL and raise HDL cholesterol as well as support oral health, prevent kidney stones, help in the fight against cancer forming cells, and support gastrointestinal health. With only 51 calories per 110g serving, this berry deserves the title of “little dynamo.” Not as fragile as softer-skinned berries, the cranberry should still be handled with care. Select berries that are deep-red in color, plump and firm. Sort out and discard soft, pitted, or discolored fruit. Berries can be stored in the refrigerator for two or three months or in the freezer for up to two years. Before cooking, remove shriveled berries and stems and rinse them under cool water. The best berries are fresh berries since they contain the greatest number of vitamins and nutrients. So, stock up on when you see them available in the produce department. And rest assured, they’ll stay frozen for years - and many a holiday season!

Not long ago, nobody knew that the only U.S. State Silver Bars locked away in the private vaults of the Lincoln Treasury would be allocated to the Federated Mint for a limited release to residents in 3 states. Every single one of the 50 U.S. State Silver Bars are date numbered in the order they ratified the Constitution and were admitted into the Union beginning in the late 1700s. “As Executive Advisor to the Lincoln Treasury I get paid to deliver breaking news. So, for anyone who hasn’t heard yet, highly collectable U.S. State Silver Bars are now being handed over at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury to residents in 3 states who beat the offer deadline, which is why I pushed for this announcement to be widely advertised,” said Mary Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the United States of America. “These bars are solid .999 pure fine silver and will always be a valuable precious metal which is why everyone is snapping up as many as they can before they’re all gone,” Withrow said. There’s one thing Withrow wants to make very clear. State residents only have seven days

to call the Toll Free Order Hotlines to get the U.S. State Silver Bars. “These valuable U.S. State Silver Bars are impossible to get at banks, credit unions or the U.S. Mint. In fact, they’re only being handed over at state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury to FL, AL and GA residents who call the Toll Free Hotline before the deadline ends seven days from today’s publication date”, said Timothy J. Shissler, Executive Director of Vault Operations at the private Lincoln Treasury. To make it fair, special Toll Free Overf low Hotlines have been set up to ensure all residents have an equal chance to get them. Rapid shipments to state residents are scheduled to begin with the first calls being accepted at precisely 8:30am today. “We’re bracing for all the calls and doing everything we can to make sure no one gets left out, but the U.S. State Silver Bars are only being handed over at just the state resident minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury for the next seven days. For now, residents can get the U.S. State Silver Bars at just the state minimum set by the Lincoln Treasury as long as they call before the order deadline ends,” confirmed Shissler. “With so many state residents trying to get these U.S. State Silver Bars, lines are busy so keep trying. All calls will be answered,” Shissler said. ■

Alternative treatments help improve quality of life by Phoebe Brown

W

hen people are diagnosed with chronic diseases, the challenge of living life fully, navigating the healthcare industry and finding the right treatment options can pose issues. For people with lung diseases, treatment options which address the disease itself are scarce and don’t usually go beyond traditional medications, supplemental oxygen or a lung transplant. Even Hollywood has taken notice of how this lack of treatment options affects people. Movies like Dallas Buyers Club illustrate the struggles of being diagnosed with a chronic, progressive disease with few treatment options. The main character, Ron Woodroof, was diagnosed with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in 1986. At the time, there were limited treatment options available. Even with a terminal diagnosis, Woodroof refused to succumb to AIDS without a fight. He started to research various medicine and drug combinations, none of which were available in the United States at the time. Through his research, Woodroof discovered medications that were available

in other countries but not yet available in the United States. Along with his doctor and another patient, Woodroof founded the Dallas Buyers Club in 1988, providing AIDS patients with smuggled medications to help ease their symptoms. Woodroof finally lost his fight with AIDS on September 12, 1992. Because he could see beyond the complacency of the medical community and sought alternative treatment options, he extended his life six years longer than his physicians thought possible. Like Woodroof, patients with chronic lung diseases are often prescribed the traditional regimen of medications, inhalers, corticosteroids and supplemental oxygen, which only address the symptoms of the disease. Though many patients are left to research alternatives on their own, new medical advancements can now provide people with chronic lung diseases a viable treatment option. A specialty clinic in the United States, the Lung Institute (www. lunginstitute.com), treats people with COPD, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung disease and other chronic lung diseases using stem cells from the patient’s own body.

Stem cells act as the body’s healing system. The body alerts these cells when they are needed and sends them to the place in the body that needs repair. However, stem cells are slow to react, and in the body of someone with a chronic illness, they are even slower. The physicians at the Lung Institute realized this and developed a procedure to help stem cells do their job more efficiently. Physicians extract stem cells from a patient’s blood or bone marrow tissue, separate the stem cells and return them intravenously. The cells then travel through the heart and into the lungs where they are trapped in the pulmonary trap. Once in the lungs, stem cells may do their job by promoting healing in the lungs, potentially improving lung function. Although Woodroof lacked alternative treatment options in the United States, there are options available for people with chronic lung diseases. With clinics nationwide, the Lung Institute has treated over 3,000 patients. A recent study produced by the clinic indicated that 83 percent of patients saw an increase in quality of life after stem cell treatment, and 49 percent of those who

took a pulmonary function test reported an increase in lung function. With medical advancements like stem cell therapy, addressing the disease at its source offers people an alternative that is helping them regain their quality of life. Q: What do “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Eve of Destruction,” “Give Peace a Chance” and “Last Train to Clarksville” all have in common? A: During the 1960s, each became a million-selling anti-war song. Wait a minute! A teenybopper Monkees hit belongs on that contentious list? Yes, and soon you too will be saying, “I’m a believer.” In September 1965, both Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter ran an unusual advertisement: Madness! Auditions. Folk and Roll Musicians - Singers for acting roles in new TV series. Running parts for four insane boys, age 17 -21. Included among the tryout hopefuls were Stephen Stills (later of Crosby, Stills and Nash), Danny Hutton (later of Three Dog Night) and—supposedly but never verified—mass murderer Charles Manson. From the 437 applicants, coveted roles went to musicians/non-actors Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork, and actors/non-musicians Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz. The quartet was hired to ape the Beatles’ zany antics in their debut movie A Hard Day’s Night. (Writer Barney Hoskyns once declared the advent of the Monkees “post-moptop surrealism for pre-teens, with great songs thrown in as part of the package.”) And great songs they often were. Songwriting partners Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart composed the “manufactured” band’s first single. “Last Train to Clarksville” took its chord structure,

“jangly” guitar sound and tight vocal harmonies directly from the Beatles’ “Paperback Writer” from earlier in 1966. In fact, Hart had thought that Paul McCartney was singing something about a “last train” rather than “paperback writer” at the song’s fadeout. Knowing that The Monkees was to be a music/comedy TV show in the style of A Hard Day’s Night, Boyce and Hart figured they couldn’t go wrong emulating the Fab Four. The songwriting pair wanted a simple title that would be easy for fans to remember. On songfacts.com, Bobby Hart explained, “We were just looking for a name that sounded good. There’s a little town in northern Arizona I used to go through called Clarksdale. We were throwing out names, and when we got to Clarksdale, we thought Clarksville sounded even better.” Boyce and Hart both opposed the Vietnam War, and they wanted the first Monkees “45” to include their take on the conflict. But both writers knew they had to exercise caution. “We couldn’t be too direct with the Monkees,” Hart admitted later. “We really couldn’t make a protest song out of it. We kind of snuck it in.” In the tune’s story line, a young soldier pleads with his girlfriend to say goodbye at a train station. He knows he may die in the war, hence the downbeat, often-repeated line: I don’t know if I’m ever coming home. The Monkees debuted on NBC-TV in September 1966, and “Last Train to Clarksville” on the Colgems label rocketed to Number One within weeks. While Boyce and Hart would also write the group’s sixth and final hit (“Valleri”), only the first of the Monkees tunes offered up a serious (if subtle) anti-war statement.

Planning for holiday traveling with osteoarthritis

Must See at Least Once in Your Lifetime

All-New 2017 Show With Live Orchestra

f you struggle with osteoarthritis, your holiday travel plans may seem like a daunting task. However, with proper planning, getting to your destination can be a breeze. Make your holiday season travels as painless as possible with these tips for managing your osteoarthritis symptoms so that you can focus solely on enjoying your stay. A good traveling experience can begin even before you hit the road or check in at the airport. Take the time to plan out your trip in advance to ensure that you are fully prepared. When packing, don’t forget your prescription medications and see your doctor to ensure you have enough medication to last throughout your trip. Other items can make your travel experience easier, including luggage with wheels and utilizing a walking cane or other assistive devices to maintain balance and provide greater support. Consider your end destination and call ahead to ask questions about your accommodations and notify your hotel of any needs. If you’re staying with family, be sure to let them know if you will need help during your stay. When flying, take advantage of assistive services at your airport, such as curbside check-in and baggage service. Wheelchair assistance is helpful when navigating the airport, especially if you are unable to obtain a nonstop flight to your destination. When you are on a time crunch to reach your connecting flight in an unfamiliar airport, your joints and stress levels will thank you for planning ahead! Finally, consider the day of the week you will be traveling, as mid-week options are often less busy, and if you’ve had a joint replacement surgery, notify the security officer and allocate enough time in your schedule for screening. Sitting for extended periods of time can cause stiff muscles and achy joints for people with osteoarthritis. During your travels, avoid pain that is associated with this condition by taking regular breaks to get up and move, or take the time to stretch if you are unable to stand up. If you’re driving, set aside enough time to get out of your vehicle and stretch your legs. Rest stops, snack breaks and fun roadside attractions provide a perfect opportunity for you to get moving. Flyers can request an aisle seat on the plane for extra leg room and complete simple stretches while in a seated position, such as head rolls, seated rotation stretches and leg extensions. Don’t let osteoarthritis keep you from enjoying the holidays to the fullest. A bit of advanced planning can make a big difference in your travel experience so that you can have a stress-free vacation. Most importantly, remember to maintain healthy joint movements before, during and after your trip to ensure that your rehabilitation efforts do not fall by the wayside. Your doctor or orthopedic specialist can serve as a helpful resource in travel planning, as they can provide recommendations based on their medical expertise and knowledge of your specific condition. Athletic Orthopedic and Reconstructive Center (AORC) is devoted to providing the highest level of quality care and treatment of the musculoskeletal system, which includes the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and nerves. Deck the Halls in Paradise

Celebrate a very merry Christmas in the Bahamas Blue skies coupled with daily temperatures ranging from 75 to 85 degrees draw tourists from around the world, and Floridians are welcome to join the party. If you like the bustle and excitement of a high-energy crowd intent on having fun, this is a prime time to visit the Bahamas. Besides, you’re just in time for Junkanoo! A festival, parade, a dance contest and a masquerade party all rolled into one, Junkanoo is part Mardi Gras, part Carnival but completely Bahamian, celebrates the history and flavor of the islands. Marvel as the beaded and costumed performing troupes, sometimes as large as 1,000 people, dance their way along the parade route to sounds of drums, cowbells and whistles. To be part of the celebration, visit the Bahamas anytime between Christmas and New Years, with the Christmas parade officially beginning at 2 a.m. on December 26 and the New Years parade beginning on January 1 and lasting until dawn each day. Each island holds its own Junkanoo, but the largest is in Nassau on New Providence island, where thousands of people flood the streets to join the party. If you’re looking for a “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” kind of Christmas, this is it. Lifestyles After 50 • December 2016 • page 20

This holiday season, think outside the box and celebrate in an exotic locale close to home

Host to tourists from all over the world, head over to the islands this holiday season for a tropical twist on the most wonderful time of the year. Below is one of the many colorful floats you’ll find at the annual Junkanoo celebration in the Bahamas.

Ring in a special New Year in beautiful Jamaica After you’ve spent Christmas in the Bahamas, head over to one of the three busy resort towns that are all served by the same large airport, making them all somewhat interchangeable. You’ll land in Montego Bay, making it the easiest to reach, but for the four-star traveler in you, Ocho, Rios and Negril may be better options. All three towns have a different vibe, so it’s really only the weather and the prices that are similar. Along with the Cancun area and the Dominican Republic, these Jamaican resorts are also known for all-inclusive resorts and appealing package deals. Even during the peak holiday months, it’s possible to lock in an appealing deal if you book early enough. Lots of people paint their houses and hang new curtains and decorations for the holiday season. And of course it wouldn’t be New Years without some Jamaican red wine and rum fruitcake, both of which are traditional Jamaican fare and eaten in most homes. The fruits in the cake are soaked in red wine for months before the holiday season, making them extra special to eat. Join in this joyous culture as they celebrate 2017 and what a way to bring in the New Year!

s we approach the holidays, clients often ask about the best ways to donate to their favorite charities. Approaches can tend to focus on complex entities like remainder trusts or donoradvised funds, which only apply to a small segment of investors. Two simple strategies, however, can be used by just about any investor. One of the best and easiest ways to give is by donating long-term appreciated securities (such as stocks or mutual funds) directly to charity, rather than selling the assets and donating the cash proceeds. By taking advantage of the applicable tax incentives, you can significantly increase the amount of funds available for charitable giving. There are two key advantages to this method: Any long-term appreciated securities with unrealized gains (meaning they were purchased more than a year ago, and have a current value greater than their original cost) may be donated to a public charity and a tax deduction can be taken for the full fair market value of the securities — up to 30% of the donor’s adjusted gross income. Additionally, since the securities are donated rather than sold, capital gains taxes from selling the securities no longer apply. The more appreciation the securities have, the greater the tax savings will be. Another gifting strategy is using your required minimum distribution (RMD) to make a charitable donation. Last year Congress made permanent the law allowing people 70 ½ or older to transfer their RMD amount (up to $100,000)

directly to charity. The donation counts as your required minimum distribution, but doesn’t increase your adjusted gross income, which can be particularly helpful if you don’t itemize and can’t deduct charitable contributions. Also, keeping some or all of your RMD out of your adjusted gross income could help you avoid the Medicare high-income surcharge or help make less of your Social Security benefits taxable. To be fully tax-free, the money needs to be transferred directly from the IRA to the charity. If you withdraw it from the IRA first and then give it to the charity, you can deduct the gift as a charitable contribution (only if you itemize), but the withdrawal will be included in your adjusted gross income. Since this is now a permanent law, IRA custodians have made the process much simpler. Many custodians will issue the check directly to the charity, using instructions from the distribution form. Some will even offer check-writing ability from the IRA, which can allow you to write the check directly from your account to the charity, and include any specialinstructions for the donation. If your IRA custodian does not offer check writing and instead transfers the money directly to the charity, it is best to contact the charity in advance to give it a heads-up that it will be getting a check from your IRA. This will best ensure that the charity can get your contact information to send you an acknowledgement for your tax records, as well as fulfill any specific instructions you have for the gift.

eader and Lifestyles After 50 fan Kathy Megyeri thoroughly enjoyed last month’s “Nobody Does It Like Dolly” article so much that she rose to our Letter to the Editor challenge and sent us a thank you note highlighting many of Dolly’s best qualities. Kathy, thank you for your interaction and support! Thanks to editor Amanda Smith for her article in the November issue entitled “Nobody Does It Like Dolly” as it was so “right on target.” Not only can I bear witness to her outstanding Nov. concert at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, but to the magic of her Tennessee theme park Dollywood especially during the holidays with its lavish productions in multiple theaters, its many restaurants featuring holiday menus, and its museum that houses Dolly’s costumes, wigs, memorabilia, touring bus, and awards. A special section in the museum honors her Imagination Library that holds special mean-

ing for older English teachers like me as each child born in Sevier County, TN receives a book once a month from birth to Kindergarten, a true testament to Dolly’s efforts to improve education. Dolly also personally supervises all restaurants and shows at the theme park including the popular Dixie Stampede venue that features live buffalo, a full scale rodeo and real Southern cooking served family style. As noted in the editor’s article, this musical powerhouse, so beloved by so many, gave $100,000 to a local birthing unit so local Tennessee women could be aided in delivering their babies close to home. Her Dolly Foundation also provides scholarships to the County’s high school students and in addition to donating computers and supplies to students, she gives $500 checks to middle school students who actually graduate from high school. But what endears her so much to us older women is her continuing work ethic, her inspirational directive to “follow your dream” as she has done,

her role modeling behavior, her devotion to her a 50-year marriage, her authorship of numerous books of encouragement, and above all, her amazing sense of humor that all of us should try to emulate for who else but Dolly could claim that it takes a “lot of money to look this cheap”? No wonder we over 50 women loudly sing along with her and really mean it: “I will ReadeR kathy megyeRi shaRes heR love foR always love you!” lifestyles afteR 50 and dolly paRton

Share Your Story: DOWNSIZING Kathy Megyeri proves we can all get by with a little help from our friends

I

n October, we featured a thoughtful piece by Bryce Dixon on the necessity of careful planning when embarking on a downsizing endeavor. The process can definitely be arduous and exhausting, but as reader Kathy Megyeri proves in her response piece below, downsizing is not without some major rewards - the best of which may be the feeling that friendship and connection top materialism anyday. - Editor I am such a pack rat that even after undergoing cataract surgery and no longer needing glasses, I still hold on to my beloved glass frames from the ‘60’s (see below). But a dear friend who recently moved into a Cypress Cove retirement facility in Ft. Myers took me aside and warned, “Kathy, while you are still physically able, still have your wits, and are under no immediate time

constraints, take an hour each day to go through a box, a closet, or a drawer and purge! If you do nothing and God forbid, something happens to you, your husband will throw it all in a dumpster, and what you considered part of your life, your image, and your memories will be forever lost.” So I listened, and admittedly, it is the hardest job I have ever undertaken but I recently took three truckloads of decorations, dolls, stuffed animals, and toys to the West Virginia Children’s Hospital where I witnessed the joy of seeing a smiling child hold a Boyd’s bear following his surgery and that made my task easier. I then took toiletries, lotions, cosmetics and perfumes to a local women’s shelter and the admitting counselor was thrilled to distribute them. I took books, sweaters, blankets, and comforters to the local nursing home and when

I was leaving, a volunteer had already chosen a story to read at activity hour from CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE AGING SOUL. I also took old towels, sheets and bedding to the local SPCA and animal shelter that were so grateful to receive linings for cages and towels that could dry newly shampooed cats and dogs. I delivered glassware, dishes, clothes, and silver wear to the local hospital’s gift shop where proceeds help the infirm to enjoy music that a harpist plays for those acutely ill. Granted that the purging will probably continue for months to come, but the process has been made

somewhat easier when others benefit. And although my old glass frames could have been sold on EBay or to an antiques dealer, I learned that the nearby Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center reads the prescription strength of lenses with a lensometer machine to support people with eyesight challenges all because Helen Keller challenged the Lions Club in 1925 to become “knights of the blind in a crusade against darkness.” Thus, downsizing can become truly rewarding, when good friends help me take the plunge to purge, and new friends - some known and some unknown - but friends all the same.

We’ve all had nights when we just can’t lie down in bed and sleep, whether it’s from heartburn, cardiac problems, hip or back aches – it could be a variety of reasons. Those are the nights we’d give anything for a comfortable chair to sleep in, one that reclines to exactly the right degree, raises feet and legs to precisely the desired level, supports the head and shoulders properly, operates easily even in the dead of night, and sends a hopeful sleeper right off to dreamland.

New Year’s Eve: Grandma Style

SIMPLE STEPS TO BETTER HEALTH: December: Be Mindful

Grandkids in town for the holidays? You’ve probably got plenty of Christmas and Hannukah ideas planned, but what about New Year’s? Help your special little ones ring in 2017 with a few of our favorite ideas for the New Year. For young grandchildren, move the clock ahead a couple of hours. This way, they can celebrate the ringing in of the New Year but still get to bed before midnight (and before they are too tired and cranky).

hen it comes to our health, it’s important to remember that it is not W just about the calories we take in or the

Get glow in the dark sticks to wave outside at midnight. (Fun for ANY age!) Have a dress up party with fun clothes, hats, tiaras, jewelry, cowboy boots, you name it. Kids love to dress up and doing it only on Halloween just isn’t quite often enough for their dress-up souls. Make sure you and Grandpa dress up, too! Have a pajama parade at midnight with your grandchildren wearing the new pajamas they got at Christmas. (If they didn’t get new ones, maybe you could give them some and have all the more reason to parade!) If you can, find fun masks for them to wear (like the picture

above) as they parade around. Do the Bubble Wrap Stomp. Buy sheets of packing bubble wrap. At midnight, put on some lively music, put the bubble wrap on the floor, and stomp away. Make your own noise makers by putting dried beans or rice in cans or cardboard tubes or empty pop bottles and decorate the outside of the container. Shake the containers wildly at midnight and show the kids what it means to ring in a New Year!

workout that we do - a key ingredient to our physical wellness is mindfulness. As the holiday season approaches, we need to allow time to consciously shut off the bombardment of sensory overload....... emails, facebook, instagram, etc. It is in this conscious decision to disconnect that we can be fully present. Have you ever gone to lunch with a friend and as you pour your heart to them about a big event or problem, they are half present without realizing it? They keep looking at their device....nodding intermittently as if really listening to you - but what does this dynamic do to each of you? When we make a conscious decision to disconnect, we can quiet the mind, open our hearts and be truly present - and fully alive. This is when you can receive and
