Flight Officer Robert W. Heyn of Toledo, Ohio
y first summer job was working as a soda jerk at my parents’ pharmacy, Orchard Drugs, in Toledo, Ohio. I was 14 and that summer, the fountain actually lost money. Apparently, I was way too generous with the syrup, ice cream, nuts and other toppings. Ah, but it kept me out of trouble, my parents reasoned, and I made good tips. I also made many friends, including one delightful woman who came in occasionally. She never told me her name or that she knew my folks, but after I went back to school in the fall, she called my mother to tell her what great manners I had, such as when I said, “It’s my pleasure.” As I would learn, she was the mother of a young serviceman, Flight Officer Robert Warren Heyn, who was killed in World War II. He was a member of a bomber group stationed in England; the plane he was navigating, the Flying Fortress, was shot down in combat over France. My mother, to whom he was engaged, had a nightmare premonition of his burning plane tumbling from the sky a couple of nights before it happened. World War II was the deadliest military conflict in our history. It is estimated that between 70- and 85-million people perished– about 3% of the world’s population in 1940. I don’t know if Bob was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heyn, but I have wondered if the woman who befriended me that summer may have regarded me as the granddaughter that

war stole away—and that fate would later return, if only for a brief period of time. I would have liked to have known her better. War may be a necessary evil on this planet, but the fact remains that it is a thief that not only takes away our children, but our children’s children as well. It robs us of our future family members and, along with that, our awaiting dreams, memories, reunions and celebrations. The survivors are left missing not only their loved ones but yearning for the ones who will never be. On this Father’s Day, we honor our fathers, celebrate fatherhood and pay tribute to those men whose lives were taken too early in service to their nation. Many were never given the opportunity to become fathers, but they are remembered nevertheless. We hope you enjoy our June edition featuring one of our favorite fathers and family men, Hugh Jackman. See you in July.

Summer is not obligatory. We can start an infernally hard jigsaw puzzle in June with the knowledge that, if there are enough rainy days, we may just finish it by Labor Day, but if not, there’s no harm, no penalty. We may have better things to do.

‘HUGH JACKMAN:
The Man. The Music. The Show.’ By RANDAL C. HILL

ugh Jackman has kicked off his 22-stop world concert tour, and with one big, shiny, two-anda-half-hour show planned in Tampa on July 5, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to pull back the curtain and take a closer look at one of today’s greatest showmen, his music, and his upcoming songand-dance revue. The saucy Aussie, an Academy Award-nominee and Golden Globe-, Grammy- and Tony Award-winning headliner, will be performing hits from The Greatest Showman, Les Misérables, Broadway and film replete with a dance troupe and a live orchestra. Ladies, expect a flirty wink and a tight-pants wiggle now and then from the fun-loving guy. *** Hugh Michael Jackman was born on October 12, 1968, in Sydney, New South Wales. His English parents had migrated to Australia a year before Hugh’s birth. Jackman attended the all-boy Knox Grammar

n partnership with Duke Energy, the City of Largo has installed seven electric vehicle charging stations across the community, free for public use. The final station, a Level 3 charger, was installed at the Central Park Performing Arts Center next to the Largo Central Park Playground. It is one of only a handful of Level 3 chargers currently available in Pinellas County that are capable of rapidly charging your vehicle in as little as 45 minutes. The stations are funded by Duke Energy’s Park & Plug program which brings electric vehicle charging stations to communities throughout Florida by providing the equipment, installation, warranty and network connection services free of charge to communities through 2022. The partnership with Duke Energy highlights the City’s strategic focus on Bryan Beckman of the Suncoast Sierra sustainability and commitment to transitioning Club stands with one of Largo’s new charging stations to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035.

‘The Last Black Man in San Francisco’ June Film By RANDAL C. HILL
F
our years ago, two best friends— Jimmie Fails and Joe Talbot— released a demo trailer with a softedged, romantic feel for their future movie called The Last Black Man in San Francisco. The trailer quickly went viral and led to the financial help needed to bring the pair’s docu-fiction flick to fruition. Based in part on Fails’s life in the bay area, The Last Black Man in San Francisco mirrors the city’s currentday realities: lack of affordable housing, an influx of well-paid techno-geeks, displacement of people of color and gentrification.
In the story, the young AfricanAmerican Fails refuses to give up a longheld dream of returning to his childhood home. The problem he faces is that the area has been gentrified, and the twostory Victorian built by his grandfather, now worth $4 million, is owned by a wealthy white couple. Back in the 1940s, his grandfather moved into the city’s Fillmore District and shared the neighborhood with Japanese-American families. When the latter were shipped off to internment camps during World War II, the remaining black residents took special pride in the ghetto area, dubbing it “the Harlem of the West” and crowning the grandfather as the “first black man in San Francisco.” Eventually, the Fails’s family unit fell apart, the house was sold and people moved elsewhere. When not skateboarding aimlessly around town, Fails fantasizes about one day owning the home of his youth. He has been living in cramped quarters

Doctors have said for years, “Playing music in your Seniors years is the greatest pill for your brain” By Joe Fontechia, Manager Fletcher Music centers ave you ever played a quiet song to help you relax? Worked out while listening to high energy music? Or even hummed a happy tune and suddenly your bad mood has disappeared? Then you’ve experienced “The Power of Music!” Unfortunately, most of us stopped music lessons in our early years because practicing was boring, and we got Joe Fontechia involved in many other activities. Fletcher Music Centers, with Manager Joe Fontechia, have tailored a new method for seniors, ages 50 to 90 to learn to play music quickly and easily without the rigors of boring practice time. Teaching is done on a new innovative keyboard called a “Virtual Orchestra” that has been designed for seniors. By just playing “one finger left hand chords”, it will add an authentic five piece band, or up to a 40 piece orchestra to your melody. You can learn to play 10 or more great songs in just six weeks time!

Here’s the Buzz on CBD Oil
By RANDAL C. HILL
F
or Hester Burkhalter of North Carolina, a long-awaited family vacation to Orlando’s Disney World in April was a dream come true. That is, until a checkpoint security officer opened Burkhalter’s purse outside the Magic Kingdom gates and discovered a one-ounce vial of peppermint-flavored CBD tincture, recommended by her doctor. “I have really bad arthritis in my legs, in my arms and in my shoulder,” the lady told Fox 35 Orlando. “It’s for the pain because it helps.” A quick narcotics test revealed that Burkhalter’s solution tested positive for THC, the ingredient in marijuana that gives its users a high. The 69-year-old, who had never received as much as a speeding ticket in her life, was held in a cell in the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for 12 hours before being released on $2,000 bail. The charges were later dropped, but Burkhalter’s long-anticipated family vacation plans lay in ruins. She plans to sue. Exactly what is CBD? Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound which comes from hemp, a strain of the cannabis sativa plant. It’s closely related to THC, the compound that creates a high, but
CBD, which contains less than 0.3% THC, doesn’t make a person stoned or intoxicated; it’s being hailed as a potential pain-relief breakthrough. What else is CBD said to do? It is often touted as an aid for arthritis pain, Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, depression, and fibromyalgia. Some claim CBD can alleviate cancer-related symptoms by reducing chemotherapy-induced nausea and
from studies done on rats, mice or in test tubes; little research has been done involving humans. Only drugs declared safe and effective by the FDA are allowed to make statements that certain products prevent or treat diseases or medical conditions. Is CBD oil legal here? The current laws are ambiguous. Last year, President Trump signed the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp. As of this printing, it is legal on the federal level but technically illegal in Florida. A Florida bill to remove it from the lists of controlled substances, and allow licensed growers to farm it, is expected to go into effect July 1.
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, a non-intoxicating product that comes from hemp, is being touted as a cure-all for everything from arthritis to depression. But is it safe? and legal? vomiting, treat acne, and aid sufferers of epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. It may also benefit heart health by lowering blood pressure and, somewhat ironically, modify circuits in the brain related to drug addiction. Preliminary research suggests that, while CBD may indeed make life better for some users, most claims are gleaned
Is it safe and effective? There’s little or no regulation when it comes to how CBD oil manufacturers create their products or how they label them, and this rankles Marcel Bonn-Miller, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. “It really is the Wild West,” he grumbled. “Joe Bob who starts up a CBD company could say whatever the hell he wants on a label and sell it to people.” A 2017 study led by Bonn-Miller revealed that nearly seven of ten CBD products
didn’t contain the amount of marijuana extract listed on the label; nearly 43 percent of the products contained too little CBD, while around 26 percent contained too much. About 20 percent of the products tested contained at least some THC. Timothy E. Welty at Drake University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences adds, “My bottom-line advice is people really need to be under the care of a health-care provider who understands CBD. They need to be monitored and managed by that individual, and not just go out and buy CBD, thinking that it’s going to be the answer.” Are there any side effects? For most users, CBD is well tolerated; however, some people may experience diarrhea, fatigue or changes in appetite. So you want to try it, maybe? For those who feel adventurous, discuss the situation with your doctor first, then do your homework. Contact the oil manufacturer and request proof of a third-party analysis for potency and purity. What are the three primary takeaways from this article? 1. There is much to be learned and proven about the efficacy and safety of CBD oil. 2. Supporters hope that conclusive test results for CBD will offer a safe and powerful natural treatment for a wide range of health issues. 3. Disney World security people look very closely at what you’re bringing into the Most Magical Place on Earth.

Understanding the Risks of Target-Date Retirement Funds by DaviD Novak
O
ne of the relatively new products in the investment world is the targetdate mutual fund. In this type of fund, an investor selects a portfolio with a future date that is expected to coincide with a particular event – most commonly retirement. As this date approaches, the company managing the fund automatically adjusts the asset allocation to get more and more conservative in anticipation of the investor needing access to at least a portion of the money. These funds have become very popular in the last 15 years or so of their existence – so popular in fact, that according to Vanguard, approximately half of retirement investors had their entire account invested in a target-date fund in 2017. This “set it and forget it” strategy sounds like a no-brainer for investors –what could be wrong with it? Plenty, it turns out. Let’s start with fees. These funds are considered “funds of funds,” meaning they are simply mutual funds that own other mutual funds. Obviously, these extra layers mean that internal expenses can add up quickly. Another issue with the target-date fund is consistency. While you may think that target-date funds with the same retirement date would have a similar weighting in stocks and bonds, this is actually not the case. Among the most common target-date fund providers like Fidelity, Vanguard and T. Rowe Price, there is a meaningful difference in asset allocation even for the same designated retirement year. Perhaps more concerning than this disparity is the fact that with a target-date fund, you are locked into a single fund family so your entire portfolio will be invested only in one fund family’s mutual funds. In more than two decades in this business, I have yet to find one family that excels in all areas of asset allocation. Possibly the most underappreciated problem with target-date funds is how they treat fixed income. Because traditional views on asset allocation would equate being more conservative with having a higher percentage of the portfolio in bonds, target-date funds are structured as such. The problem is that in an environment where interest rates rise, bond funds will struggle to break even since bond prices move inversely to the direction of interest rates. Before you put your retirement portfolio on autopilot, make sure you understand all the risks of target-date funds. EALTHLiNE ❤
June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month Today, an estimated 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is encouraging individuals to take ten steps to promote good brain health for optimum aging. “Being proactive about your brain health is something that individuals of all ages should do,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President and CEO. “While we work toward a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, there are steps people can take right now to help reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other dementiarelated illnesses.” To reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s and other dementias, do the following: Eat Well. Adopt a low-fat diet rich in fruits and veggies. Limit intake of red meats, fried and processed foods, salt and sugar. In general, foods that are “heart healthy” are also “brain healthy.” Stay Active. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and can also help improve mood and overall wellbeing. Brisk walking benefits brain health, while aerobics can boost your endurance; weight training builds strength and flexibility. Learn New Things. Learn a new language, take a cooking class, or try a new sport or game. Even something as simple as brushing your teeth with your nondominant hand stimulates the brain by forcing it to think outside of its routine. Get Enough Sleep. Getting a good, consistent sleep every night is vital; at least seven to nine hours is ideal. Insomnia or sleep apnea can have serious physical effects and negatively affect memory and thinking. Mind your Meds. Medication can affect everyone differently, especially as you age. Talk to your doctor or local pharmacist about any new drugs and make sure you understand when and how often to take it.
Stop Smoking and Limit Alcohol. Smoking can increase the risk of serious illnesses, while too much alcohol can affect memory, impair judgment and present safety issues. Stay Connected. Social interaction and maintaining an active social life are essential for brain health, cognitive stimulation and mood. Share a meal with friends and family, play board games, or hang out. Engage in your community. Know Your Blood Pressure. Blood pressure can impact your cognitive functioning. Check it regularly. See your doctor. Maintain regular checkups. Health screenings are vital to managing chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, all of which can impact brain health. Speak openly with your physician about any concerns or questions you have about your health. Get a Memory Screening. Our brains need regular checkups, just as other parts of our bodies do. A memory screening is a quick, easy, non-invasive exam for our minds. Talk to your doctor about getting a screening as part of your annual wellness exam or call AFA at (866) 232-8484.

Sweet & Crabby Salad By JENNA LEE REEVES
N
amed for their sapphire-tinted claws, blue crabs are valued for their sweet, succulent meat. Though they may taste “sweet,” they are also known for their quick ability to weaponize their front pincers –thus the origination of the term, “crabby” disposition. Crab meat is an excellent source of high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals and is very low in saturated fat. It can be somewhat high in cholesterol so consult a healthcare professional if you are on a restricted diet. Whether served for Father’s Day, the Fourth of July, or any special meal, we think this “Sweet and Crabby Salad” will put everyone in a good mood.

The Florida Orchestra does big, bold Beethoven by Kelly Smith
W
hen The Florida Orchestra revs up in the fall, its Masterworks series will be powered by Ludwig van Beethoven, the greatest composer in classical music. Seem like an exaggeration? Not really. “Beethoven is the greatest composer because he took all that life threw at him and turned it into inspirational art that still unites humanity today,” says Music Director Michael Francis, who is programming all of Beethoven’s symphonies and major concertos over two seasons in honor of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth. “We’ll use Beethoven as a framework to explore deeper issues of his life and music, such as perseverance, hope and heroism. Then we’ll ask: Who are the Beethovens of today? Who are Michael Francis the people reflecting our society through music?” Ludwigshafen Among the 10 or so Beethoven works on the schedule are rare performances of the supersized Mahler arrangements of both Beethoven’s Fifth and Eroica Symphony -- often called “Beethoven on steroids.” Both are the original works, with a few tweaks, performed by an orchestra much larger than Beethoven could have ever imagined. TFO has never played the Mahler versions before. Other Beethoven works include his third and fourth piano concertos, his violin concerto and his fourth and eighth symphonies. But the Masterworks series isn’t all about Beethoven. In another first, TFO welcomes superstar American composer and conductor Eric Whitacre in November for Deep Field: A Cosmic Experience, which also will mark the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, with stunning Hubble Telescope video and The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay singing in the aisles. Other highlights include Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons directed by TFO Concertmaster Jeffrey Multer on violin; Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with TFO Principal Clarinet Natalie Hoe; Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Joyce Yang; and the Rascher Saxophone Quartet performing a piece by modern American master Philip Glass. The Florida Orchestra: Performs regularly at the Straz Center in Tampa, Mahaffey in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. The orchestra offers affordably priced tickets to a variety of concerts, though prices vary depending on demand. See floridaorchestra.org or call 727.892.3337 and 1.800.662.7286. A Modest Proposal
I
’d like to have a conversation about bare-chested men. And no, this topic did not arise because of erotic fantasies about Vladimir Putin. But rather, a reality that confronts me regularly now that the weather has heated up here in South Florida. As I walk my dog, it is not unusual for me to encounter a topless male of a certain age. Said male has removed his T-shirt because he is hot. He is probably unaware that his unsolicited nakedness is raising my body temperature — and not in a good way. While a woman can’t reveal the upper half of her anatomy without censure or possible arrest, a man can. And I’m not at all advocating for equal treatment when it comes to disrobing. But I do have a question where men are concerned: Just because you can, does it mean that you should? Obviously, there are certain environments where it’s perfectly acceptable to let it all hang out such as the beach or one’s backyard — but stripping on a public street? Let’s please rethink that option, even if you’re too young for Social Security. None of us is perfect. And those among us who are retirement age may have left that idyllic image behind a while ago. That’s fine. Love thyself, I say. But casually passing a guy on the sidewalk shouldn’t have to be an intimate visual exchange. Hey, neighbor, knowing that you have sagging pectorals and an appendix scar is simply too much information! Remember “Ugly Naked Guy” from the TV show Friends? Well, we never really saw his face on the series, but my theory is, he went on a diet and moved to South Florida after the season finale. I think I saw him at the supermarket as he parked his car next to mine. One quick glance at his shirtless torso told me all I needed to know: he was scrawny, hairy, and had pasty white skin. Presumably “UNG” was wearing pants, but I didn’t wait long enough to find out. It’s at least 24 hours, and I still haven’t managed to “un-see” him. I’m no prude, but I would appreciate just a bit more modesty. Fortunately, there are public places that do frown on male toplessness like restaurants and even gyms, where sweat equals success. So gentlemen, please remember it’s as hot for me as it is for you outdoors. So jog, bike, fast-walk, stroll, whatever you like. But for heaven’s sake, keep your shirt on.
