Staying Well in the August Heat
Each year, July lazily rolls into August and brings about a blazing end to the summer season. No matter how you might try, this month is, without fail, the warmest out of the year. With air almost too heavy to breathe and an unrelenting sun hanging high overhead, it’s easy to shut yourself inside and hide from the heat. However, August is also National Wellness Month, a great excuse (not that you need one!) to take special care in being kind to yourself and your body. The term “wellness” is multifaceted in that it can refer to your physical health, your diet or even how you’re feeling mentally. With the pandemic that’s stretched on for a number of months, many folks are struggling with all aspects of their well-being.
Take this month to pick up the habit of doing some light exercise each day, such as a few laps in the pool, or even making the change to diversify your diet. Be sure to take action if you feel as though you could use either professional help or a just a simple change of habit when it comes to taking care of you. Staying well means eating well, too. Without a balanced diet complete with fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats, you may notice yourself not feeling well. And since Florida’s August heat tends to be vicious, it’s a great idea to focus on cool
(temperature “cool”, not “rad”, but that too, I suppose) recipes in order to keep yourself hydrated and comfortable. An easy way you can help keep yourself hydrated, cool and healthy is by preparing a large batch of fruit salad to eat from throughout the duration of your week. You can also do the same by making a homemade veggie tray to have as snacks or as a side with meals. Fruits and vegetables tend to have a high percentage by volume of water, making them a great way to stay hydrated if you’re tired of relying on water to hydrate you all day. By preparing fruit and vegetables to be at the ready, no matter how busy your day or week gets, you’re able to get at least a few fruits and veggies in every day, if not your daily two cups of each. For more information and recipes on how to stay healthy, hydrated and happy this month, visit our website, lifestylesafter50.com, to learn more. No matter how you choose to observe National Wellness Month, don’t be afraid to be daring with recipes or other lifestyle changes. Be sure to let yourself have a slow day here and there to keep yourself rested and recharged for your next adventure. Have a great month and we’ll see you in September.

Eating Smart BY: JAN LARRAINE COX
“You are what you eat,” was a familiar phrase in the 1970s. As most of us have been dining at home during COVID-19 sheltering, choosing nutritious and delicious foods has become a priority in some homes.
Many have taken steps to self-improve, to feel stronger, confident to move forward when the pandemic is finally over. It is possible to take steps now to improve: to shake off the mediocre and embrace the best possible nutrition to face the challenges we shall have to rebuild and put our shoulders to that task! Determined not to gain the quarantine 15 pounds, starting in midMarch, I located a daily aerobic TV show with instructors I enjoy and look forward to joining each day. And my infrequent purchases at the grocery store follow my newly acquired nutrition knowledge, most notably from nutritionist Dr. Joel Fuhrman. A New York Times best-selling author and advisory board member at Whole Foods Market, Fuhrman is also a favorite guest on “The Dr. Oz Show”, “Today”, “Good Morning America” and other shows. His message is a focus on micronutrients, which are potently found in what Fuhrman has coined “the G-Bombs”: Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries and Seeds. He touts eating unrefined plant foods as the best influence for the body thriving. Rather than an addition to the diet, Fuhrman proposes making the G-Bombs the focus of the healthy diet. Where half his healthy food plate is cooked and raw vegetables in great variety, the other half of the plate is filled with whole grains, fruits, beans Lifestyles After 50 • August 2020 • page 4
and seeds/nuts. These are low-calorie and high-nutrient foods that promote self-healing and repair. A large salad; at least a half cup serving of beans/legumes in soup, salad or other dish; at least three fresh fruits; one ounce of raw nuts and seeds; at least one large serving of steamed green vegetables: this is the recommended daily food plan which Fuhrman purports will keep us healthy. Fuhrman’s book entitled “100 Best Foods for Health and Longevity” highlights aspects of those 100 foods and what they do for our bodies. For example, he says apple intake has been linked to a lower risk of heart disease and to lower cholesterol, as well as blood pressure. Beans in all their array of colors, shapes and sizes are immune systemstrengthening and cancer-fighting foods. Since they are high-nutrient, high-fiber and low-calorie foods, they are a great choice for weight-loss. No-salt added canned beans are convenient, and the liquid they come in can be used in soups as it is nutrient rich. Avocados are the fruit with the highest amount of both fat and protein. They promote healthy blood lipids and solve hunger for hours after adding to a meal. The high nitrate content of beets increases blood nitric oxide concentrations, which may help prevent heart disease by lowering blood pressure, according to Dr. Fuhrman. And the green leaves of beets are packed with carotenoids, minerals and fiber. So many choices for eating healthy and smart!
In the Summertime Mungo Jerry BY: RANDAL C. HILL C’mon, admit it. The cheerful, shuffling Top 5 single of “In the Summertime” brought a smile to your face and got your fingers drumming back in the summer of 1970. Mungo Jerry’s irresistible anthem to good times resonates to this day. But let’s examine the lyrics a bit more carefully than we did 50 years ago.
from bluesman John Lee Hooker, who often used his foot in lieu of a percussion instrument.
“In the Summertime” was created by the British band’s lead singer and guitarist, Ray Dorset, who composed the song in 1968 while working for Timex. Dorset admits that the now-iconic melody “just popped into his head,” at work one afternoon, and that he scribbled the words in just 10 minutes the next day. “It’s got no chorus,” he admitted on songfacts.com. “All it’s got is a melody that goes over and over again, with a set of lyrics that conjure up a celebration of life, especially if you’re a young person—it’s a great day, you’ve managed to get a car—preferably with the top off—you’re cruising around, and, if you’re a guy, you’re picking up girls.”
Now let’s consider some of those other lyrics:
Dorset’s ditty—number one in England, number three in the USA—was inspired lyrically by America’s vacuous “beach party” flicks of the 1960s. “That was the teenage dream. What more can you want?” he asks with a grin.
- Finally, women must have blanched upon hearing the lines
- The disc was criticized about “Have a drink, have a drive,” which obviously approves of getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. - “Do a ton or a ton and twenty-five” are English terms for driving 100—or 125—miles an hour. - You can make it, make it good in a lay-by promises romance in a highway turnout. - “If her daddy’s rich, take her out for a meal,” - “If her daddy’s poor, just do what you feel.”
In his recording, Dorset sang and played guitars (acoustic and electric), as well as a shaker instrument called the “cabasa”. A trio of musical pals provided backup via banjo, string bass and piano. No drums were used that day, although Dorset can be heard stomping his foot to the rhythm, a concept adopted
OUCH! Nevertheless, Dorset’s creation remains a catchy paean to innocence that conjures memories made under a seductive summertime sun.

Growing Young: How Friendship, Opmism And Kindness Can Help You Live To 100 By Marta
We all want to live longer, and we’ve been cauoned that healthy food, exercise, cessaon of smoking and keeping our mental acuity are the soluons. But when Marta Zaraska, a Canadian-born Washington Post journalist who’s wrien on molecular biochemistry, epidemiology, neuroscience, psychology and nutrion studied the science of human longevity, she was shocked at what she found. In “Growing Young”, she set out to priorize habits of longevity and focus on what maers most if you want to live a long life. The book’s eleven chapters take the reader around the world with her as she experiences flower arranging with 80-yearolds in Japan, visits senior centers and “hugging rooms,” and catches wild mice in the woods of central England. Trust me, aer reading this well-researched study, your life will be changed. She first looks at atude. In 2009, researchers found that women with cynical hoslity, a personality trait defined by pessimism and mistrust, were more likely to develop coronary heart disease and die prematurely in contrast to another study last year that found that opmisc men and women live up to 11 to 15 percent longer.
Secondly, she examines the importance of others in one’s life, specifically the company we keep. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevenon, 1,443 unmarried people per 100,00 died in 2017 versus just 779 married people per 100,000. What we don’t know is whether marriage actually protects against death, or if healthy people are more likely to marry. In the absence of a life partner, a strong support network of family, friends and helpful neighbors lowers mortality risk by 45 percent. Zaraska offers examples: mowing your elderly neighbor’s lawn might be beer for you than a gym workout and jogging with a friend is certainly beer than going it alone. Thirdly, the power of community cannot be underesmated. Zaraska concludes that volunteering lowers your mortality by 22 percent while certain health fads like eang kale haven’t been shown to help at all. Zaraska concludes that in addion to nutrion and physical acvity, deepening friendships, praccing empathy and contemplang one’s purpose in life can improve our lifespans. What maers most in life, she writes, is what helps us live the longest. She says, “When you grow as a person, chances are you will also grow young.”

YOU’LL NEED MORE THAN JUST A WILL
By WILLIAM R. MUMBAUER, ATTORNEY www.flwillstrustsprobate.com A reader asks: Due to the coronavirus pandemic I am eager to meet with an attorney to discuss estate planning. I know I need a Will, but are there other estate planning documents I should also be considering. Response: You’re certainly off to a good start by deciding to make a Will, or to update your existing Will. Assuming your legal needs will not be complicated, I would suggest that you ask the attorney if the initial estate planning conference can take place by telephone. A telephone conference is more conducive to keeping everyone involved healthy. In addition to having an up-to-date Will, its important that you also consider three other estate planning documents. These documents, which are also known as “advance directives”, are: - DESIGNATION OF HEALTH CARE SURROGATE - allows a trusted friend or family member to make medical decisions for you, without court intervention, should you become incapacitated. - “LIVING WILL” - allows you to prevent your dying being artificially prolonged and you lingering indefinitely in a persistent vegetative state. Should this occur. - DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY - allows a trusted friend or family member to make financial decisions for you and to apply for MEDICAID on your behalf, without court supervision, should you become incapacitated. It is critical that these advance directives be put in place before a serious illness strikes. Even if you already have advance directives you should have an estate planning attorney review them to make certain that possible changes in the law have not compromised their effectiveness. Mr. Mumbauer, a 5th generation Floridian, has maintained a law practice in Brandon, Florida since 1980 with emphasis on estate planning. Mr. Mumbauer takes special pride in representing the senior community by maintaining a sensitive and practical approach to problem solving. Mr. Mumbauer is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar. Mr. Mumbauer is also a Mentor in probate law and has been qualified by the Second District Court of Appeal in Florida as an expert witness in matters involving the drafting of Wills. Mr. Mumbauer’s Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating among judges and lawyers for Legal Ability is High to Very High and his General Recommendation Rating is Very High. Please note: Mr. Mumbauer’s articles outline general principles of law and are they are not intended to apply to individual circumstances.

The Best Wellness Food BY: LES MEGYERI
August is National Wellness Month, focusing America’s attention on caring for oneself, creating healthy routines and managing stress. When Washington, D.C.’s foremost kidney specialist removed my wife’s kidney stones, I decided to follow her post-op regimen as well: first, drink lemonade for the citrate that protects against new stones developing and secondly, eat a banana every day. Here’s why you should, too: 1. Bananas help your energy. Certified personal trainer Nancy Feinstein says, “You’ll have more energy because bananas have three natural sugars: sucrose, fructose and glucose. Those naturally occurring sugars are accompanied by vitamins and minerals without fat or cholesterol.” 2. Dietitian Rachel Berman says eating a banana after your daily exercise workout is better than any sports drink as the banana’s potassium prevents muscle cramps if you’ve lost water through sweat, and bananas have enough electrolytes and natural carbs to replenish your tired muscles. 3. Bananas help with weight loss. Trainer Feinstein says, “Foods high in fiber make you feel full longer, so you won’t consume as many calories.”
4. Bananas have healing powers that lower the risk of cardiovascular issues, the number one cause of death throughout the world, according to the World Health Organization. Certified nutritionist Shelley Gawith said that the potassium in bananas lowers the risk of heart disease by 27 percent by preventing the hardening of the arteries. 5. Bananas help maintain healthy blood pressure. Berman claims that potassium in one banana is 10 percent of the recommended daily dose. The more potassium you eat, the more sodium you excrete. 6. Bananas improve your insulin sensitivity. Registered dietitian Trista Best claims that bananas are an excellent source of resistant starch which has a positive impact on insulin resistance. 7. Bananas help the digestive tract. Berman claims bananas contain Lifestyles After 50 • August 2020 • page 8
prebiotics, fiber that helps good bacteria or probiotics grow in the gut and digest food. Their three grams of fiber helps to protect the colon wall and keep one regular. 8. Bananas blast harmful free radicals due to their antioxidant levels. Free radicals cause oxidative stress in our bodies that harm cells and have been linked to heart disease, cancer, arthritis and other inflammatory or ischemic conditions. 9. Bananas even help eyesight. They have vitamin A that helps keep eyes protected by aiding the membrane that covers one’s eyeballs and helps facilitate the amount of light that enters the cornea. 10. Bananas can help improve your mood and help you sleep. Feinstein says, “Bananas help produce serotonin, a hormone that affects our sleep cycle and moods. They also contain tryptophan which the body can convert into the mood-boosting brain neurotransmitter.” Bananas are versatile—on top of cereal, baked into banana bread, blended into a smoothie, or eaten as is. In our household, it’s not “an apple a day;” it’s “a banana a day.” Les Megyeri is a frequent contributor to Lifestyles After 50. Summer is a Bummer
Whatever happened to the summers of my youth? School's end, the extended hours of daylight, more time to spend outdoors? While I still enjoy the extended hours of daylight, my appreciation is from behind a screen door. Summers used to be carefree. Now they're hazardous to your health.

SERVICES OFFERED: It's hard to enjoy summer when you're reminded of risks that come with warm weather. Can I possibly find the same pleasures when I feel I must take out my garbage wearing a hazmat suit? Blame COVID-19, global warming or thinning of the ozone layer, but daring to walk outside unprotected feels like extreme risk-taking behavior. And the beach? A real downer. My inner child longs to run freely and build elaborate sand castles. But my outer older person threatens with more age spots and a trip to the dermatologist if I don't remain under the umbrella. Among my beach equipment, I have lately included a tape measure to ensure that I'm six feet away from the nearest blanket. And mask-wearing does result in a weird sun tan. As to applying sun protection, what's the proper protocol? Do I dab sun block before or after skin moisturizer? If I apply moisturizer first, will that prevent my sun block from working? But if I apply sun block first, will that prevent my moisturizer from plumping my wrinkles? In any event, there are now two layers of lotion on my face before I add makeup. No wonder I walk around feeling like a stick of butter.

Remember when mosquito bites were simply that? Annoying little itchy bumps that subsided in a couple of days? Now there's the Zika virus. I've been warned to cover up and use insect repellent. Do I spray this on before or after the sun block and skin moisturizer? One expert suggested wearing mosquito netting over our faces. Why not? It's the perfect accessory for the COVID-19 mask. In the good old summertime, who ever heard of ticks? Ticks were a sound made by my grandfather's pocket watch. But I must also cover and spray to prevent Lyme disease. So that's me, in 90 degree weather, walking my dog, dressed like I'm ready for skiing. But as I watch my grandchildren from said screened porch thoroughly enjoying their summer, and their mother chasing them with a tube of sun block, another thought occurs. Summer hasn't changed. I have. Summer always had its perils, but to be concerned about them was the responsibility of adults. I can recall my mother's hesitance to venture out from under the umbrella. Today, that shadeseeking grown-up is me. Susan's newest book, How to Complain When There's Nothing to Complain About, is available at Amazon.com and other online book sellers. Read her blog at www. The Prodigious Power of Peter Parker BY RANDAL C. HILL
It was the late 1950s, and comic-book sales were stagnating. So was the enthusiasm of Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee, following two decades in his high-pressure, often-chaotic world of work. He later recalled to Rolling Stone Press, “I got to thinking, ‘Why not try something different?’ Something I’d like to read. No more cardboard characters and predictable stories where the hero is 100 percent good and always wins, and the bad guy is 100 percent bad and doomed to lose…” Lee eventually came up with a unique idea—a fairy tale for adults. “My formula became: Let’s suspend disbelief for a moment and accept that a character can fly through the air, climb on walls or have the strength of fifty men. What would his life be like if he lived in today’s world?” In August of 1962, he introduced Spider-Man to the world, a character supposedly inspired both by Lee having watched a spider crawl up a wall, as well as the memory of one of his favorite childhood comic books: The Spider, Master of Men.
with everyday problems that include allergy attacks, money woes, acne issues, dandruff flakes and striking out with the girls he meets. To avoid having others recognize him when he employs his amazing powers, Parker adopts a red-and-blue costume, as well as the name Spider-Man, in order to conceal his true identity. He also creates and wears a pair of wrist-worn “web shooters” to approximate a spider’s web-spinning abilities. Parker spins such webs only when needing to capture bad guys, some of whom would fill a rogue’s gallery of the world’s most notorious comic-book criminals. Among them are Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Scorpion, Shocker the Lizard, Venom and Carnage. As comic-book kids had usually been portrayed as mere sidekicks to larger-than-life protagonists, Parker’s character was quickly embraced by teenage readers. Spider-Man soared to unimagined heights when given his own series beginning in March 1963. Eventually Lee’s character surpassed even the formidable Superman in sales, reigning as the world’s largest-selling comic periodical for several years.
Spider-Man is a timid, nerdy, genius-level teenager named Peter Parker. While visiting a science exhibition about radiation one day, he is bitten by a radioactive spider. Following numerous mutations in his body, Parker finds himself gifted with the proportionate strength and agility of the arachnid, as well as a “spider sense” that warns him of nearby danger.
When Lee first described the soon-to-become icon idea to his publisher, Martin Goodman, Goodman had sneered and harrumphed, “Yech! Who wants to read about spiders? People hate spiders!” He finished with, “I can’t see that as a name for a hero or a series at all!”
His new body has the agility, balance and bodily coordination beyond that of the finest human athletes. But Parker himself still remains a teenager
Perhaps you couldn’t, sir, but loyal and enthusiastic Stan Lee fans certainly could.

Covid Q&A with a Doctor’s Perspecve BY: DR. RAY RAVITZ (MILLENNIUM PHYSICIAN GROUP) I recommend that if someone has symptoms, they should see their doctor and get tested. See the expert! We need to understand that aer the first surge, human nature relaxes and along with that our good hygiene habits. So we all expect a second wave.
Years ago, I had the opportunity to go through the same type of experience with an epidemic called HIV. As everyone knows now, it created similar reacons to what we are seeing now. There are cascades of misinformaon and conjecture that change daily and cloud reality. The result helps me as a healthcare provider to understand how necessary it is to dispense reason and fact to paents. COVID-19 is a germ! We need to help our paents gain a sense of calm by helping them truly understand how to survive and beat it. When we look back now at the fears that infected us then, we are amazed at how we acted and reacted. Oh, the “rear view mirror “is so clear! This pandemic should be approached with purpose and reason. Good medicine has always been governed by “good common sense” both then and now. We should dispel fear with reason, and squelch ignorance with fact. It is no surprise that simply giving proper space and hand washing (a lost art) are the two simple things to do. Acon does conquer fear.
Finally, we must live, and life must go on. We need to realize the damage to all of us and our loved ones by depriving them of life, love, and light.

Revising the Fiies I am currently reading, “A Brief History of Time” by Steven Hawking, and I’m devouring everything I can find about the time-space continuum. I’ve also watched the movie “Donnie Darko” multiple times until I felt that I understood it. All of this has helped me come to the conclusion that The Joy of My Life is caught in a time-warp. She enjoys little music beyond that of the 50s. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy music from that era, as well. In fact, I always look forward each month, to reading Randal C. Hill’s columns found in this stellar publication. The first music that really moved me in my teens was Rockabilly. This included Elvis when he was good, B.M. (Before Movies). “The Sun Sessions” were his standout work, in my humble opinion. For my money, the best record he ever made was “My Baby Left Me” which was the B-side of “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.” The thing is, I can retain my love of that music, and still move beyond it. My Honey cannot, and can barely function, unless there is background music from the TV’s Music Choice Channel 429 “Solid Gold Oldies”. For me, it’s nice now and then, but not day after day after day. My tastes are too eclectic. I must have some Miles Davis, some Thelonious Monk, i.e. some real Jazz occasionally (as opposed to “Smooth”). Or some Celtic Music. Let’s face it, I appreciate a lot of music that someone my age is not necessarily supposed to like, for instance I enjoy Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and more recently the Progressive Rock of “Porcupine Tree”, “The Pineapple Thief” and “Dream Theater”. So much music, so little time. When we met, my wife’s music and mine were at opposite poles. We found our common ground one year in Savannah, at a small club below the sidewalk named “Crossroads”. We had drinks and listened to the band. She reacted: “I like this! This isn’t Jazz is it?” “No,” I said, “not exactly”. “This is Blues,” I continued. “I like Blues,” she said. Suffice to say that her collection is currently larger than mine. At the moment, I’m listening to Alison Krauss and Union Station. Oops! I have to break away now. I hear the strains of “Be-Bop a Lula” wafting from the portal and I have to dive through before it collapses. See ya later, Alligator. Mike reluctantly tips his hat to Rap music for keeping vinyl records alive. Contact him at micwrighthamo@gmail.com Lifestyles After 50 • August 2020 • page 16

The Florida Orchestra goes inside Beethoven Symphony No. 7 By KELLY SMITH Florida Orchestra Music Director Michael Francis brings his popular Inside the Music series straight into your living room for free. As your personal guide, the maestro peels back the layers of triumph and heartache in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 while TFO musicians perform from their homes in this video series. Learn to listen deeper to this magnificent work and escape the stress and anxiety of these difficult days: “Since Covid-19, I’ve been listening to the 7th every afternoon, sort of my cheer up theme song. I just discovered how much I love it, and now I have your wonderful analysis to help me understand it. Thank you so much for giving me this experience. Being able to see each musician contribute their sound is wonderful.” -Travis You can find the complete series celebrating 250 years of Beethoven on the orchestra’s TFO at Home page at FloridaOrchestra.org/TFO-at-Home, along with dozens of performance and education videos. PART 1: The strings Maestro Francis breaks down the triumphant finale, starting with the strings. PART 2: Brass & timpani We go to the special teams for the victorious fanfare. PART 3: The woodwinds For the woodwinds, it’s all about the drama. PART 4: The big finish Put it all together and what have you got? An astonishing, whooping finale. PART 5: Heartache and hope Immerse yourself in the haunting melodies of the most well-known part of the symphony, the second movement. You may know it from The King’s Speech. My favorite part … More than a dozen TFO musicians explain and play their favorite parts of Symphony No. 7. Cool Down with Homemade Popsicles BY: REBECCA FENDING
Possibly the best way to cool down is by eang or drinking something cold. And what beer way to relive your favorite season as a child than by making your own homemade freezer popsicles? The beauty of these cool treats is that you can throw together virtually any combinaon of fruits (or vegetables too, we won’t judge you) in order to create your favorite flavor profile in frozen treat form. Here are a couple of easy recipes for a cool, sweet aernoon treat. Get Your Frozen Vitamin C Pour orange juice into your popsicle mold unl 2/3 full. Add chunks of your desired fruit, anything from fresh pineapple, strawberries or peaches. Freeze overnight or a minimum of six hours. Creamy, Cool and Berry Yummy In a blender, blend two cups of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries or a berry mix. Pour berry puree into a large bowl and add two tablespoons of honey and two cups of Greek yogurt (preferably vanilla). Fold gently to create a marbled affect. Once combined, pour into your popsicle mold and let freeze overnight for best results.

Doggie Dementia By SARAH HILARIO, DVM
C
anine cognitive dysfunction is a condition similar to dementia in humans. It generally occurs in elderly dogs at least 8 years of age or older. The symptoms can be difficult to distinguish from the typical signs of aging, and therefore may go unnoticed for some time. Early detection of cognitive dysfunction is vital, because treatment can have a positive effect on an aging dog’s senior years. Common symptoms include loss of housetraining, trouble sleeping at night, decreased activity or confusion. For example, a dog who starts barking at random objects or seems to wander aimlessly around the house could be showing disorientation stemming from cognitive dysfunction. If any of these symptoms are noticed, bring them to your veterinarian’s attention; have a conversation about this condition and the treatment options that may improve your pet’s quality of life. Even before a formal diagnosis, simple steps can be taken at home to help your aging pet. Keep a consistent routine with set times for feeding, walking, playing, and sleeping. Enrich your dog’s environment with dedicated play times, food puzzles, long walks, etc. to stimulate brain activity. Consider a senior diet with added antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids for mental acuity. Purina Pro Plan
Bright Minds is one example. Also, starting a brain aging supplement such as Senilife or Neutricks will complement a senior diet. Your veterinarian can recommend additional treatments for your pet based on their individual symptoms. The FDA approved drug, Anipryl, is commonly used for its ability to prolong dopamine activity in the brain. Additionally, there are several prescription diets that can be utilized such as the Hill’s B/D diet. Anti-anxiety medications or sleep aids may be added to the treatment plan. As the signs of cognitive dysfunction progress, the use of a combination of drugs, diets, supplements, and environmental changes will be necessary. Even though cognitive dysfunction is not curable, these treatments can enable many dogs to have a relaxed, playful, and enriched life. No matter how subtle the symptoms, discuss them with your veterinarian at your pet’s next wellness visit. Boyette Animal Hospital is proud to provide your pets with the highest quality of treatment and care from twelve veterinarians and a devoted staff. To make an appointment, please call (813) 671-3400 or visit us online at www.BoyetteAnimalHospital.com.
