CAPITALISE ON INCREDIBLE END-OF-YEAR DEALS BY DOING YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU SHOP JUNE is the dollar deal month in motoring. The run-up to the end of the financial year is one of the two best times of the year for buying a new car, and the one when every dealer and car company has something special to lure buyers to their brand. It could be a drive-away deal, a special price on clearance cars, a finance package or even a gift certificate or factory bonus cheque. The best thing is that it makes buying easier, because they want – and need – to sell. All the big brands stockpile cars for their June sales and, with so much choice in Australia today, the run-up to the EOFY creates a buyers’ market. Even so, it’s important to get set before you go.

A little bit of extra preparation before you hit the road can make a big difference to the dealer, and stress levels you feel once inside the dealership. TOP FIVE TIPS: RESEARCH. RESEARCH. RESEARCH Set your budget, decide on the class of car, then hit the internet to research the details. Manufacturer websites will have all the facts and figures, model line-ups and pricing, including their latest bargains. It’s easy to compare and contrast, not just brandagainst-brand but also to find the equipment you crave.

TAKE A TEST DRIVE There is no substitute. Your first choice

from the web might be too big or too small, too powerful or too thirsty, or just not to your taste. Driving is the only way to know. Make sure you drive it on familiar roads, then park it in the driveway to see how it looks.

SET YOUR FINANCES Decide early if you’re trading-in, how you plan to pay, what you can afford – repayments as well as the bottom line – and lock-in a budget. If necessary, get an off-sider to keep you honest.

SHOP EARLY, BUY LATE June 30 is the cut-off date for EOFY deals and, with big bonuses on the line at dealerships, the prices get sharper as the

days count down. So make your decision early, but delay the final signing to ensure you crunch the best possible package.

COMPROMISE Be prepared to compromise. If they don’t have the colour you want, compromise; if they don’t have the exact model you want, compromise; if you cannot get quite the discount you want, compromise.

PAYBACK ON PRESTIGE THERE is a gift that keeps on giving for Jaguar Land Rover buyers in June. It’s an extended ownership package that combines a longer warranty with free servicing. The factory-backed five-year deal is worth about $5000 in service savings on the full range of Jaguar, Land Rover and Range Rover models. It also comes in addition to any savings a buyer can negotiate at the dealership on an EOFY purchase. “The warranty is extended from the usual three years to five, and there is free servicing for five years. That could save someone more than $5000,” says Richard Moye, dealer principal at Brisbane City Jaguar Land Rover. “So they won’t be paying service charges for five years. And the longer warranty is completely portable.” The only exception to the deal is the high-performance SVO Jaguar models. The ownership package is a different take on the June selling season and comes as Jaguar and

Land Rover roll out the best model line-up in their company’s history. Jaguar has just added the compact E-Pace SUV to its line-up, joining the larger F-Pace and the traditional sedans and F-Type

sports cars, while the Velar is the great looking new SUV star at Range Rover. Moye says the big bonus with the ownership package is that it’s not being applied to runout cars or to boost sales of slower-moving models. “The beauty of it is that there are no exclusions for the new year model ranges. It applies to the

whole of the 2018 model line-up,” he says. “It’s across the board, not just for any specific vehicles.” He reports increased interest from prestige buyers and a big lift in sales through 2018 as the latest JLR models kick into gear, and has even added an extra staff member to cope with demand. “In Jaguar we’ve got the new

E-Pace. It’s another landmark car. It’s undoubtedly the Range Rover Sport on the other side. “The new model year 18 version of that is already becoming difficult to source. It’s the value package, but it’s also got the electronic dashboard, the same as the new Velar. “We’re seeing more people now than we’ve ever seen as a Jaguar Land Rover dealer, and that’s coming up to 20 years with the brands. A lot of them are new people, from the German brands. They’re looking to, as we say, ‘Trade up’.” Turning back to the June deal, Moye says it’s not just a gimmick. “It’s not redeemable. It’s not one of those hooks to get people in. No matter what deal is done, it’s coming directly from the manufacturer.” He has added supplies to cope with the expected demand, as the deal expires on June 30 and vehicles must be delivered by July 31. “We have quite a lot of stock at the moment because we’re expecting to be quite over-run.” And he has a final teaser for EOFY buyers. “The deal is in addition to anything they can crunch from us on the floor,” he smiles.

WHOLE KIT AND CABOODLE EVERY new car that rolls out of the Bartons Motor Group until June 30 will leave with a full decade of comprehensive coverage. A 10-year warranty package doubles the original factory coverage and is the company’s commitment to its customers in the run-up to the end of the financial year. It covers everything sold with Holden, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Subaru badges during the biggest annual sales event on the Southside of Brisbane. “This is the biggest time of the year for us. So, as a point of difference for Bartons, we’re running a genuine five-year extension to the manufacturer’s factory warranty,” says Mark Beitz, Bartons dealer principal/owner. “It’s already proving to be a big hit. It’s on all new cars. It’s an extended warranty for an extra five years. It’s unlimited kilometres with a $5000 claim limit per claim.”

He says the 10-year package provides the sort of certainty that people now crave in a new-car purchase, unlike some other extended warranties, there are no onerous conditions. “For example, you can get the car serviced anywhere, provided you keep the records.” Bartons began 70 years ago as a small workshop and has become one of the biggest family-owned dealerships in Queensland, with sites at Wynnum and Capalaba. It now has 218 staff with a surprising one-third of them women, including Dodie Millar (below left), general manager Hyundai/Subaru at Wynnum. “The two things that set us apart are that we’re family-owned and we have a lot of women in the business. People want to deal with women,” Beitz says. “So we’ve got women right across the business, from sales to service and finance. Right now, 30 per cent of the staff are women.” Looking into the EOFY deals, Beitz says Bartons is fully-stocked - and more - with all five of its brands. “We’ve got $38 million worth of new-car stock. And about 1400 used cars,” he says. “We’re pricing the used cars to sell. Quite frankly, we cannot get enough of them.” Drilling into the details, Beitz says the focus at Subaru is on the outgoing Forester. There is a totally-new model coming in August and the current model is

into runout. The Forester 2.5i-L Luxury Edition is one of the heroes, with powered leather front seats, electric sunroof and powered tailgate. “There is a substantial price advantage with all Forester models,” says Beitz. Across at Holden, the Astra is the hero and the company’s other new models - the Commodore and Equinox are starting to gain acceptance in Australia. “We’re seeing a genuine spike in inquiry on new Holdens,” he says. “We have special prices on the Astra, with ex-demonstrator cars from $19,990 drive-away with an automatic.” At Mitsubishi, Beitz says “It’s all about Triton and the SUVs”. The specials start with the latest Eclipse Cross and run all the way to the off-road adventurer, the Pajero. Nissan has a big finance deal across the line-up for the financial year sale, with a one per cent comparison rate that even applies to the company’s GT-R supercar.

The finance packages run right across the company’s SUV family and include the recently-updated Navara ute. “We are new with Nissan and they are committed to sustainable growth. They are going in the right direction,” says Beitz. But the biggest selling brand at Bartons is Hyundai, which has already begun its financial year program and will power through to

June 30 with the offers already on the board. “They are just a quality car for the price,” says Beitz. There are gift cards for most models, ranging in value from $250 on the Accent Sport to $2000 on the Santa Fe, as well as the brand’s usual drive-away prices, five years of free servicing on the i40 Active wagon and a 1.1 per cent finance package on many models.

SUPER SUV DEALS ON NOW THE SUV specialists at Nundah Mitsubishi are making life easier until the end of June. There is a free automatic upgrade on every SUV in the Nundah Mitsubishi family, from the baby ASX through to the Pajero off-road champion. The automatic extra is in addition to aggressive pricing on everything in stock at one of Queensland’s biggest Mitsubishi dealers. Nundah is the home base for the Norris Motor Group and the whole site was re-developed and updated last year after many years of successful operation. But the emphasis now is on the sales program through to June 30. “There are some pretty red-hot deals,” says Shane Beach, dealer principal. “We’re going through a demonstrator clearance. We’ve got more than 30 demos and they all have to go before the start of July -

we have hundreds and hundreds of cars to choose from.” Mitsubishi is building its brand around SUVs, from the Eclipse Cross through to the Pajero, with a stronger emphasis also on the popular Triton range of utes. “We focus on SUVs because that’s what we’re good at. We know the vehicles, we know their strengths, we know what people are likely to want,” he says. “The good thing for buyers is that the cars that are most popular are the ones you put on as demos, so those are the ones we need to clear. It’s models like the Outlander and Pajero.” The automatic upgrade is a bonus of between $2000 and $2500, depending on model, right down to the Lancer and Mirage passenger cars - but only at Nundah Mitsubishi. “Everything has free auto, including the limited-edition Blackline Lancer. Normally you never get a deal on a limitededition model, but we have it with those. And we even have some demos of the Blackline,” he says. The focus for Triton is clearing cars ahead of a new model. “We have a 2019 model year

coming up for Triton right at the end of the year. At this time of the year we order big for light commercials because we know tradies and businesses are looking to update. So we’ve got really aggressive pricing on the Triton at the moment,” he says. “It’s really a perfect storm, with the end of financial year, model clearance and demonstrator sales.” The Norris Motor Group, which is the parent company for Nundah Mitsubishi, also has an Isuzu dealership in the same location and Beach says there are good deals there. “Isuzu is flying. It’s bulletproof,” he says. “They have had double-digit growth, 10 years in a row. They are looking for another big year, which is great news for customers.” He is encouraging shoppers to come and ask about the cracking deals on offer. “They don’t need a gimmick. But there are free on-roads and free servicing on some models. It’s almost a make-an-offer brand,” he says. “There is a demo clearance with their MU-X and D-Max, which are both doing really well.”

ALL SET TO MEET THE MARKET EVERY Mazda model is a driveaway deal until the end of the financial year. It’s an extraordinary move by one of Australia’s favourite newcar choices, which continues its pacy range improvements this year with the facelifted BT50 ute, upcoming mid-sized CX-8 SUV

and a refreshed MX-5 sports car before the end of 2018. In June, Mazda is putting the spotlight on two of the most popular models in the range with the drive-away emphasis. “This is a first for Mazda,” says Luke Camilleri, dealer principal of Grand Prix Mazda on Gympie

Road at Aspley. “We’re focused on the BT50 and Mazda 3. I’ve got over 80 of the BT50s in stock and 150 Mazda 3s. We’re ready to roll on every model. “But this is the time everything is at a drive-away price - the whole lot. It’s a first for CX-5, a first for CX-9, even a first for the MX-5.”

The drive-away pricing is a saving of about $1500 as a minimum, although Camilleri says the ‘Go EOFY’ deals being touted by Mazda have other bottom-line benefits. “We’ve got new models coming, the product is excellent, so now we’re going to meet the market on value,” he says. Potential buyers are encouraged to get into the dealership to take advantage of the deals on offer with the Grand Prix site on Gympie Rd in Aspley heaving with stock for the June rush. “We’ve got over 150 cars on site. I’ve loaded up on everything. We’re going hard and so is Mazda,” he says. “The best thing (for customers) is to come in. We want to tailor the package to each person and find out what they need – the size of their garage, what kind of driving they do. In Mazda it’s called the UCX, the Ultimate Customer Experience. We want people to experience our culture and let our people take them through the

journey. We don’t want to be like a supermarket, where you just pick a car and take it through the checkout. We want it to be an experience, not a transaction.” Even so, Camilleri is promising rapid processing for anyone who is rushing to get a deal done. “All the staff are geared up for immediate turnaround. It’s nextday delivery, but if someone comes in early enough in the morning they could drive out the same day,” he says. “And we want them to enjoy the process so much and have a memorable experience that they want to do it again. ”

DETERMINED TO DO A DEAL MORE than 100 cars are priced to go before June 30 at Brisbane BMW. The runout cars all carry 2017 build plates and bargain prices, but that’s not the finish of the EOFY action at Queensland’s biggest BMW dealership. There are special prices on the baby 118i and family-sized 320i, with savings of more than $10,000 on some cars, as well as a deal on the good looking new X2 that’s recently arrived as BMW’s latest SUV hero. “BMW is having a crack and I’m having an extra-special crack,” says Martin Roller, dealer principal at BMW Brisbane. “I’ve got my business hat on and I want to move some inventory off my shelves. If people want a deal they are going to get a deal. “This is probably the best time to buy a car. Some people might say the end of the year is better, but this is the end of the year for me.” The EOFY year focus starts with the cars built by BMW in 2017. There are a variety of models, both passenger cars and SUVs, with many already registered after running short distances as dealer demonstrators. “Those cars have to go,” says Roller blunty.

“BMW has provided some incentives to help us clear the stock and we are very, very motivated. “From a dealership position, we have to close our books on June 30 and I don’t want to carry them into the new financial year.” Brisbane BMW has also stocked up on the 118i, which is priced at $39,900 drive-away, with backing from BMW Australia. The car would normally be $49,000 on the

road, so there is significant saving. “That’s a great price,” says Roller. BMW Australia is also pushing the latest 320i, fitted with the Shadow and Luminance packages, at $58,800 drive-away. The Shadow pack includes 19-inch

alloys, an M leather sports steering wheel and dakota leather seats, while the Luminance package had a different design of alloys, wood trim highlights in the cabin and heated front seats. Both Shadow and Luminance get a glass sunroof. “That’s a $72,000 car. But stocks are a bit tight so BMW has extended the offer on those,” says Roller.

“A customer can order a car and they will honour the price, so that’s not just a deal for cars we have in stock before June 30.” Apart from taking the red pencil to the showroom stickers, there is a special finance package for the X2 which provides a $3000 benefit for anyone buying through BMW Finance. “There is a deposit contribution. So once the customer has

negotiated their price, there is a further $3000 reduction on the finance amount provided it’s through BMW Finance,” says Roller. His final message is clear. “We have all sorts of deals. We’ve got 115 cars in stock that are 2017-plated and I have priced them close to wholesale to make sure they are in someone’s driveway, not my stock, by June 30,” he says.

STARS ALIGN FOR BIG SAVINGS A PERFECT storm is promising big bonuses for buyers at Northside Hyundai and Honda. The combination of excessive company demonstrators, big stocks of new cars, government tax incentives and deals across brands is impossible to top, says dealer principal Robert Brown. “It doesn’t get any better than this. We’ve got $10 million worth of stock to clear,� says Brown. Hyundai is already flatout with deals through to the end of the financial year and the company’s Australian chief, Scott Grant, says they have been so popular that nothing will change before June 30. “What we have right now will continue to the end of June. A lot of people do a lot

of things in June to stimulate activity but we’ve deliberately moved early,� says Grant. “It’s working for our customers so we will keep going with what we have. There are a range of deals across the line-up, so we have something for everyone.� The incentives start with a gift card for each Hyundai model, from

$250 on the Accent Sport to $1000 on the i30 Go and Tucson Active, and up to $2000 on the Santa Fe Active X. “There is a big emphasis on the Santa Fe because we have a new model coming in July. So we’re into runout and that means a saving around $2000,� says Grant. Brown says it’s important to come in to get the full details. “We have fantastic finance deals and most cars have greatly reduced driveaway pricing,� he says.

“It’s a perfect storm and we have to clear our stocks. With the government’s small-business tax incentives, it makes sense to update now.� For Honda shoppers, Brown says the latest seven-year factory warranty can be a powerful clincher. It’s being promoted under the seven-year sale banner that also includes seven years of premium roadside assistance on most models. “That’s a big deal for owners,� he says. The price points for Honda include the HR-V compact auto

SUV from $26,490 during runout, the Civic auto hatch and sedan from $24,990 drive-away, and the baby Jazz from $15,990 drive-away. There are bonus prices on some models, too, with Honda touting $1100 of extra value in the Odyssey and $1700 in the Accord. For Northside, there is another incentive to get extra buyers into the dealership. “We are genuinely short of used cars. The strong used sales volume through April and May has seen us run short of used cars. We desperately need trade-ins,� says Brown.

BIG BANG FOR END OF YEAR NO ONE does June better than Toyota. A big bang through to the end of the financial year has been a foundation event for Australia’s favourite carmaker for more than a decade and a winner for its customers for just as long. The focus for 2018 is as obvious

as the showroom results for the year, where the HiLux and Corolla star for Toyota. “June is always a big deal for us. The campaign is called ‘Toyota Means Business’,” says Noel Clemson, the general sales manager at Southside Toyota. “But it’s not just about pricing.

It’s about quality, durability and reliability. That’s what Toyota stands for.” Clemson is a 25-year veteran at Southside and still gets excited by the prospect of the June sales surge. “We see an increase of around 30 to 40 per cent in the run-up to

the end of the financial year,” he says. This year, the focus is on the HiLux with a range of deals from the basic model right through to the flagship. “We’re targeting the tradie with an entry-level HiLux Workmate at $23,990 drive-away. At the top end we’ve got the HiLux SR5 with free on-roads and $2000 worth of free accessories,” says Clemson. “We’ve also got the Corolla hatch on run-out with the new model coming along in August. So we’ve got the 2017-build Ascent Sport priced at $22,990 on the road, with the CVT automatic. “We’ve got extra stock of all the popular models to cope with the demand.”

ON A MISSION TO IMPRESS PERFORMAX HAVAL

AUSTRALIA’S newest automotive arrival, Haval, is using June to add impact to its showroom push in Australia. Haval is already the world’s topselling SUV brand, thanks to its home base in China, and has a four-model range down under that is likely to be tweaked and expanded in coming years. For its EOFY activity it’s doing a bonus deal to cut the drive-away

price on its key models, the compact H2 and family-sized H6 five-seater. “We are calling it a gift card. It’s the gift you apply to the price of the car,” says Jeff Hardie, marketing officer of Performax Haval at North Lakes. “There is a $1000 gift card for H2 buyers and a $1500 gift card for H6 buyers.” Applying the gift to the bottom

line takes the price of the H2 to $23,990 on the road and the H6 drops to $28,490 on the road. According to Hardie, value is one of the keys to Haval’s approach in Australia despite its relatively recent arrival in 2016. “The Haval brand is very new in Australia. But it’s very competitive. And it’s growing at a steady rate,” he says. “They have very big plans (and) we’ve got high expectations

around what will be coming in the future.” Haval is part of the Great Wall Motors group, sitting at the upper end of its mechanical family with a strong focus on winning export business outside of China. The line-up starts with the H2, which touts a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating, rising through the H6 to the luxuryfocused H8, now selling from $38,990 drive-away, to the sevenseater H9 four-wheel-drive. “We are focusing on the H2, H6 and H9. They are the new models,” says Hardie. “One of the Performax directors recently travelled to China, including a visit to the Beijing Motor Show, and they have very big plans. “The key thing is that they are

not a replication. Haval has gone out and sourced the world’s best componentry. The design work is also done in China, but they have recruited experienced people from other companies. “They have got the right people on the job for the innovation to drive the business forward.” Performax has been onboard with Haval since July 2016 and, although it’s still a challenger brand, Hardie says the package is right for people who want an SUV. That includes the drive-away pricing policy and a five-year warranty with 100,000 kilometres of coverage. “And the bells and whistles are comparable to anything else on the market today. That’s particularly with the H9, which has just been re-released and meets the standard for a petrol four-wheel-drive.” Performax is seeing a variety of converts to the Haval brand, with a predictable predominance of firsttime SUV buyers on the H2 but a wide spread on the H6. “The demand for the H6 is quite varied. We’re getting both younger and older people. The spread of the demographic is right across the board,” says Hardie. This is one way to do that,� says Rebecca Jones, Sunco Motors general manager. “The reason we provide different offers is to make it easier for locals to get into a new vehicle with solutions that not only make the buying process easy, but also speak to all different households and budgets.� Sunco is a family owned and operated business established by Ray Jones in 1993. Rebecca Jones says the company has a commitment to the community that goes beyond selling cars. “It’s about the family values and

giving back to the community,� she says. “It could be small sports teams, Rotary, the RSPCA and rehoming animals, all sorts of things. “We have employed over 100 locals for 25 years, so for us, it is about more than just selling a car.� Even so, the five franchises promise plenty of possibilities in the run-up to June 30. Apart from the great trade-in bonuses on offer, there are gift cards available. At Hyundai, the focus is right on the SUV market. From the new 2018 special editions that are about to drop through to the run out sevenseater SUV, the popular Santa Fe. “One of the most popular deals we have secured is a Hyundai Santa Fe Active 2.2 litre diesel automatic for just $39,555 driveaway,� Rebecca Jones said. “That saves the customer nearly $10,000. We have also seen the financiers come through with compelling finance offers on all brands, particularly Hyundai and Nissan.�

Nissan shoppers are also in for a good deal with a single 370Z coupe on offer for $49,990, a saving of nearly $8000. The popular Big 1 finance promotion is back until June 30, reducing customers’ ownership costs. As State of Origin football fever takes its usual place in the spotlight, Nissan has brought back its Queenslander accessory pack, bigger and better than ever, offering Navara purchasers $8500 worth of genuine accessories for just $2995.

At Holden, the focus is on two key models of the Astra hatch. The latest generation small car from Holden is not only impressive on the road, but packed with technology. The RS five-door hatch was $27,990 and Sunco is driving it out the door for just $23,990. But the red-hot end of financial year deal would have to be the Astra R Plus auto which was $24,990 but Sunco is delivering to the locals for just $19,990 driveaway. The retailer also promises LDV

and Chrysler-Jeep bargains, as the Chinese and American brands continue their showroom push in 2018. “Across the five brands and the used-car department, our target is to sell over 500 vehicles in June,� the general manager said. “Our culture has a friendly, customer-service focus. “We believe the secret to selling cars is building relationships and if you treat your customers like family they will feel comfortable to continue coming back.�
